LGF: Crazy But Clever Conflator

Blogosphere • Views: 3,176

The right wing blogosphere is getting weirder and weirder: Crazytown Watch: Charles Johnson Conflates Some Fringe Group With Rick Perry.

Once again, I’m accused of being “crazy” because I find groups like Repent Amarillo disturbing. But not just “crazy” — I’m also sneaky and evil because I’m “conflating” Repent Amarillo with Rick Perry. Because I hate small government, or I hate Texas, or something like that. So I’m both crazy and nefariously clever.

“Now why would he do that?” wonders Melissa Clouthier, hinting at dark ulterior motives.

It’s a head-scratcher, all right. In a post about a religious fanatic group in Texas, why in the world did I bring up the governor of Texas — who just happens to have a history of appointing religious fanatics to influential positions in the Texas government?

Clouthier continues:

Newsflash haters: Texans are doing well because they’ve clung to rugged individualism, their guns, their God, their independence, their fiscal responsibility, etc. I know it’s galling when secular humanistic states like California are going down the crap-hole. It’s tough to see small government being such a big win while big government harms the very people it’s supposed to help.

But that’s just the way things roll, guys. Good luck finding evidence that big social programs are ever a cultural, fiscal or social win. They NEVER are a win because they strip the individual of his ability to choose his own life. It is axiomatic.

And by the way, Jerry Brown has actual radical ties. Will that disqualify him to run for Governor in California? Why no! No, it won’t.

This might set a record for reading the most into an LGF post. Secular humanism, small government, big social programs, rugged individualism; these are all interesting concepts, but if they have something to do with what I wrote, I must be missing it.

And meanwhile, notice that Clouthier never gets around to saying anything at all about the “fringe group” that was the whole point of my post.

P.S. I don’t hate Texas or Texans, just for the record.

Bloviating doesn't appear to require the ability to read or at least comprehend what you read.

And she says this, "And by the way, Jerry Brown has actual radical ties." So now she's a fashion critic, too?

Most people don't know where "Moonbeam" came from. Jerry Brown said he wanted California to launch its own satellite into space -- He was widely mocked and ridiculed for this suggestion, hence 'moonbeam'...today, just about everybody who has a couple million dollars to spare has their own satellite in orbit. Brown was just 20 years ahead of his time.

And his politics are anything but liberal. He's even somewhat libertarian (no new taxes unless the voters approve of them).

What a crock. CA and TX are the two most diverse states in the country and certainly can't be easily labeled.

Her view of politics seems to be End Times theology grafted onto a football game between the evil forces of CA and the goodness of TX. God, of course, will be the referee.

For the vast majority of Texans (almost 90% urban now) "rugged individualism" amounts to commuting to work in an F150.

Goodhair won yesterday, but it isn't all roses for him:

McLeroy, Miller upset in SBOE elections

Thomas Ratliff upset State Board of Education member Don McLeroy in a Republican primary nail-biter.

McLeroy, a dentist from Bryan, lost by about 800 votes. No Democrat has filed for the District 9 race so Ratliff will take the seat next year.

Appointed board chairman in 2007, McLeroy has been the poster-child for the board’s conservative bloc with his affable tone but strident ideology. Last year, his nomination as chairman was blocked by Democrats in the Texas Senate.

His defeat is substantial blow to the conservatives, who have largely driven the recent rewrites of curriculum standards. Ratliff, son of former Lt. Gov. Bill Ratliff, has made it clear that he will be a more moderate vote on the closely divided 15-member board.

Dallas Republican Geraldine Miller, a member of the board’s moderate faction, lost to teacher George Clayton in that primary, the Associated Press announced around 12:30 p.m. There is no Democrat contending for this seat, either.

Miller has been a fixture on the board since 1984 and the surge by Clayton was not expected.

McLeroy's fellow nutburger, Cynthia Dunbar, appears headed for a runoff.

I don't think so. There was a wingnut conspiracy theory about how districts that voted for Obama were getting more money. In reality more densely populated received more money because that's where the people and jobs are located. The fact that more urban areas also voted Dem is just a historical coincidence.

Permian actually. I got to tour that area with my brother the geologist about 10-15 years ago.

"Al Qeada 7" lawyers names found.

"Department of Justice attorneys work around the clock to keep this country safe, and it is offensive that their patriotism is being questioned," said Justice Department Spokesman Matt Miller.

The video by the group Keep America Safe, which dubbed the seven lawyers "The Al Qaeda 7," is the latest salvo in a lengthy political battle.

For several months, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) has led an effort to uncover politically-appointed lawyers within the Justice Department who have advocated for Guantanamo Bay detainees or other terror suspects.

Wikipedia link for the Delaware Basin. Very interesting area since the thick limestone deposits and such get you interesting terrain and cave systems as well.

Delaware Basin

My visit there was more like 20 years ago. But I still have photos about and memories of seeing some great rocks, Carlsbad Caverns, a skunk who knew how to exploit a campground's electric lights, plus a 9" long centipede who exploited the use of a outdoor water faucet to get a drink in the desert.

Further:

Positive: CN, DE, GA, IL, IN, MA, MI, MN, NV, NH, NJ, NY, OH, OR, TX, WA, WI.

Negative: FL, HI, ID, IO, KS, KY, LA, ME, MD, MS, MO, MT, NB, NM, NC, ND, OK, PN, RI, SC, SD, TN, UT, VT, VA, WV, WY.

So in general, and by state, theres a reasonable, but not perfect correlation. Its worth noting that Texas does give slightly more than it takes >>

Not all of the appointees mentioned were simply criminal defense lawyers just out to make a buck. Jennifer Daskal spent years at Human Rights Watch criticizing every aspect of GWB's war on terror. An advocate with a very slanted take on things if you read through the many links at HRW about her. Ha. She whined that Bush should shut down Gitmo and she whined when some of the inmate that we let go back home to Algeria promptly disappeared into the prison system there.

“The United States will not solve the Guantanamo problem by sending detainees from one unfair system to another,” Daskal said. “Washington should demand that Algeria comply with its own laws..

Good luck with that.

re: #141 lostlakehiker

The parallel Charles is emphasizing, I think, is the injection of religious fundamentalism into everything--from govt. to public schools to private social activities. And the implied violence in the name of righteousness that is a big part of Repent's rhetoric. (just check out their site)

It's true that they haven't blown anybody up yet. But should we wait until they do to criticize them?

166 Randall Gross  Wed, Mar 3, 2010 3:04:34pm

What's really the shit about this is that Grassley is one of the the dimshits who failed to create enabling legislation for trying Gitmo detainees all the way up until right before the '06 elections. The legislation finally got enacted by the lump on the log congress after five years of war on terror. That legislation was flawed, and got struck down. Grassley slacked for five years after the start of the war on terror, then gave a half assed effort, and here we are 3.5 years later without any terrorists tried and he's flapping his fricking gums...

What an idiot.

Exclusive: RNC document mocks donors, plays on 'fear'

The Republican National Committee plans to raise money this election cycle through an aggressive campaign capitalizing on “fear” of President Barack Obama and a promise to "save the country from trending toward socialism."

The strategy was detailed in a confidential party fundraising presentation, obtained by POLITICO, which also outlines how “ego-driven” wealthy donors can be tapped with offers of access and “tchochkes.”

re: #157 sattv4u2

And thats all Grassley (et al) had asked for

As stated, if I were the prosecutor in ANY case I would want to know who my counterparts on the defense team are

If you were the prosecutor you WOULD know who your counterparts were. Routinely.

That isn't what this is about. This is about stigmatizing lawyers who (usually pro bono) defended intensely unpopular defendants. "Defended", past tense. This is about making short-term political hay out of a lawyer upholding some of the finest traditions of our legal system.

Grassley is beneath contempt, as is anyone who sympathizes with or defends his conduct.

This is about stigmatizing lawyers ...

Which is why I posted that video. To use the label "Al Qaeda 7" is about as stigmatizing as one could get in contemporary American culture.

Absolutely, this is a cheap smear job taking advantage of leftover raw emotion from 9/11.

Grassley, like most politicians, isn't above this.

If I were in charge of fundraising for the GOP I'd suggest the same thing. The Republican base is terrified by conspiracies from Fox News and conservative blogs. Fear is the most powerful thing they have and it's easier than coming up with ideas.

Doctor Melissa Clouthier? OK, I checked the medical board listing in Texas, California and Michigan. No such listing for a licensed doctor by that name. She's a chiropractor and calls herself an "alternative medicine doc" in her Facebook page. No where are her credentials or medical experience even noted. She probably has a PhD in literature and just calls herself a doctor. The State of Texas doesn't give chiropractors physician status.

Off topic: NYT today has a piece in the educational support section titled: Let’s Talk About It: Discussing the Science and Politics of Global Warming that I find disturbing.

The writers have, perhaps without realizing, internalized the TEACH THE CONTROVERSY method of DI and the Wedge Document. The writers have unfortunately fallen prey to a very modern, or perhaps better labeled, post-modern approach to science and education that may not be obvious at first glance, but lies there deep under the surface.

179 Only The Lurker Knows  Wed, Mar 3, 2010 3:16:32pm

Regarding the lawyers. Couldn't the claim of conflict of interest be brought up if any of these 9 defended some of these people and are now tasked with prosecuting them in a Federal Court of Law?

I am assuming of course that if any of them had defended one of the accused that they A. Wouldn't be assigned to prosecute them and that B. If they were, they would recuse themselves from the case.

But then again, you know what they say about assuming.

re: #167 Conservative Moonbat

Is it really more craven than the Bush=Hitler talking points when the tables were turned a few years ago? Craven? yes! "Also craven" I believe is more accurate.

One other slightly tangent point re Texas politics - Perry may be more panderer than wingnut, to the degree it makes a difference. His secessionist talk, his coziness with that wingnut pastor Hagee, and his total comfort with creationist interests get beaucoup votes. He may just not care, he may shrug his shoulders and say 'maybe'. He may not give it a minute's deep thought. More likely, he's just dishonest enough to flirt with all these groups in exchange for power. He DID get 2 things right of immediate importance - he strengthened Amendment #2, and the mandatory HPV virus vaccine will save many lives. He went against the wingnuts to make it mandatory for girls, when the family values crowd was in full whargarble mode. Apparently cancer vaccines turn girls into whores? who knew?

This has happened to me a lot...from people on both the left and the right. They can't seem to comprehend that somebody who disagrees with them on a few issues is not necessarily their polar opposite in EVERYTHING, so you suddenly find them regurgitating every right-vs.-left (or left-vs.-right) talking point there is, while you're sitting there scratching your head wondering what they're saying has to do with the issue at hand.

This is what happens when you base your opinions in ideology rather than reason. You assume that if a person does not share every single one of your views, they must hold a completely different ideology and worldview. Reasonable people, of course, understand that they can disagree on certain matters while holding common views on a broad range of issues.

We give the benefit of the doubt to those guys who emailed silly things that others use to discredit man made global warming. They were just guys horsing around.

Maybe these Texas people are just good ole boys playing with photoshop.

To be fair, Repent Amarillo has no record of car bombings, suicide bombings, beheadings, etc. The analogy between Repent Amarillo and the real Taliban is thin.

But for the law. The Taliban did what they did because they had the full backing of their laws. They were the law.

Again, but for the law. The dominionists would be no better than the Taliban or any other oppressive, murderous theocracy if they were the ones in charge of the laws of our land. Since our laws do not favor their twisted ideology, you do not hear as many stories about stoning gays, adulterers, and non-christians to death here as you do of those who violate similar religious laws in Sharia controlled theocracies.

We're on the same page. As long as they don't break the law, they're like you and me. It's just talk.

In deference to Charles, talk is descriptive and to keep our eyes open is important. But actions speak louder than words.

The only reason groups like this are not committing violence is because it's against the law in this country. If they didn't have laws to restrain them, I have absolutely no doubt they would be just as capable of atrocities as the Taliban.

Clouthier was part right, but only in a glancing way. And there was that whole missing-out-on-the-housing-bubble-because-not-that-many-people-enjoy-the-climate-here thing, too.
