Confidential RNC Document Outlines Strategy of Fear Mongering

Politics • Views: 4,047

Good. Grief.

Exclusive: RNC document mocks donors, plays on ‘fear’.

The Republican National Committee plans to raise money this election cycle through an aggressive campaign capitalizing on “fear” of President Barack Obama and a promise to “save the country from trending toward socialism.”

The strategy was detailed in a confidential party fundraising presentation, obtained by POLITICO, which also outlines how “ego-driven” wealthy donors can be tapped with offers of access and “tchochkes.”

The presentation was delivered by RNC Finance Director Rob Bickhart to top donors and fundraisers at a party retreat in Boca Grande, Florida on February 18, a source at the gathering said.

In neat PowerPoint pages, it lifts the curtain on the often-cynical terms of political marketing, displaying an air of disdain for the party’s donors that is usually confined to the barroom conversations of political operatives.

The presentation explains the Republican fundraising in simple terms.

“What can you sell when you do not have the White House, the House, or the Senate…?” it asks. The answer: “Save the country from trending toward Socialism!”

Manipulating donors with crude caricatures and playing on their fears is hardly unique to Republicans or to the RNC – Democrats raised millions off George W. Bush in similar terms – but rarely is it practiced in such cartoonish terms.

One page, headed “The Evil Empire,” pictures Obama as the Joker from Batman, while House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leaders Harry Reid are depicted as Cruella DeVille and Scooby Doo, respectively.

Imo, this really started with the '94 election cycle. They've been on a downhill track ever since.

Political parties have worked this way since, well, forever. But this is the first time I have seen it put in such cynical terms in a nice, neat little powerpoint presentation.

Epic FAIL. No other way to put it. The RNC is a joke.

Personally, I can't wait for the spin on this bad boy. Should be fun.

To add to this, I think it is pretty terrible to openly admit that you use fear to motivate donors. However, what is more despicable, is to openly refer to the opposing political party as EVIL. That goes so far past the line of respectable political discourse. This whole thing is shameful.

None of them want to deal with the truth and that's why we're in the toilet.

The Modern Whig Philosophy

There are three interrelated concepts that form foundation of the Modern Whig philosophy.

I. Principles

The reality is these are critical to the welfare of the country and the Party. These principles bind us as moderates, unify us as Americans, and also serve to exclude extremes.

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY - Any action of the government must respect principles of fiscal responsibility and public accountability.
ENERGY INDEPENDENCE - Develop practical domestic energy sources to reduce dependence on foreign energy sources.
STATE'S RESPONSIBILITY - Each state can generally determine its course of action based on local values and unique needs.
SOCIAL ACCEPTANCE - When the government is compelled to legislate morality, every citizen should be considered as equal.
EDUCATION AND SCIENTIFIC ADVANCEMENT - Increase public and private emphasis on math and science to promote American innovation to compete in the global economy.
VETERANS AFFAIRS - Vigilant advocacy relating to the medical, financial, and overall well-being of our military families and veterans.

I can only agree. Demonizing your opposition isn't exactly a ground-breaking new strategy in politics. I see little difference between this and the strategy in the last election cycle of continuing to run against Bush - a strategy still being employed to this day in various arenas.

Assuming there's any validity to it in the first place, of course. I'll give this a couple of days before even going that far.

The RNC has admitted it's real.

“The document was used for a fundraising presentation Chairman Steele did not attend, nor had he seen the document,” RNC Communications Director Doug Heye said in an email. “Fundraising documents are often controversial.

“Obviously, the Chairman disagrees with the language and finds the use of such imagery to be unacceptable. It will not be used by the Republican National Committee – in any capacity – in the future,” Heye said.

We've been too eager to pander and take short cuts for decades now instead of build coalitions based on libertarianism, smart capitalism, free trade, and small federal gubment. Wyoming gov. signs law adopting 'cowboy ethics'

The principles of "cowboy ethics" are now part of Wyoming law.

Gov. Dave Freudenthal signed legislation Wednesday adopting an official Wyoming state code.

The symbolic measure spells out 10 ethics derived from a "Code of the West" outlined in a book by author and retired Wall Street investor James Owen.

The ethics code carries no criminal penalties and is not meant to replace any civil codes.

The state code admonishes residents and lawmakers to live courageously, take pride in their work, finish what they start, do what's necessary, be tough but fair, keep promises, ride for the brand, talk less and say more, remember that some things aren't for sale, and know where to draw the line.

Not sure what your video is - it isn't playing or doing much of anything for me - but "ride for the brand" is an old saying, common in the West, meaning that you owe your loyalty to the ranch (or other employer) you're taking pay from. At least, that's the origin; it's pretty easy to see the wider interpretations that get lent to it. I have no doubt it resonates in Wyoming.

There's probably lots more history on it available through a web search.

Depends. The people who live there are very different from the people who vacation there.

My sister used to spend about half the year there, working as a cook for a fly fishing school, so whenever we visited, we hung with the locals. We also spent a lot of time exploring the park. Two entirely different worlds.

I take people proclaiming they have ethics as a general tendency that they don't, though.

It's pretty easy to pass a bill saying you'll be ethical. I prefer actually seeing ethical actions. And nothing there is in any way different from sheer common sense.

Except for "ride for the brand", which has dubious applicability in most circumstances. If you find out your employer is doing something criminal, do you 'ride for the brand' and protect him?

I take people proclaiming they have ethics as a general tendency that they don't, though.

It's pretty easy to pass a bill saying you'll be ethical. I prefer actually seeing ethical actions. And nothing there is in any way different from sheer common sense.

Except for "ride for the brand", which has dubious applicability in most circumstances. If you find out your employer is doing something criminal, do you 'ride for the brand' and protect him?

yah, there is always some suspicious person with a negative vibe...you're it

Companies these days do not display the loyalty to employees that the old ranchers did to their hands. If we want a resurrection of good employer-employee loyalty, it's a two-way street.

I don't care if someone uses "ride for the brand" as what motivates them to get through their workday and do a good job. That's fine. I like that. I do think it's absurd for lawmakers to declare a list of oversimplified ethics and tell the residents of the state that this is what they should live up to.

And I don't understand why people who are normally against empty speeches, hollow rhetoric, and government waste being gung-ho about this.

It is not the place of government to declare what anyone's ethics should be. It's one thing Obama does far too often, in my view.

Cowboy ethics-
The state code admonishes residents and lawmakers to live courageously, take pride in their work, finish what they start, do what's necessary, be tough but fair, keep promises, ride for the brand, talk less and say more, remember that some things aren't for sale, and know where to draw the line.

Every generation has thought that morals have gone to hell since 'the before times'. This generation is no different.

The problem I have with them is still the same. Even if you're absolutely right that we need ethical renewal (for lack of a better term), that bill was still cynical posturing.

Palin writing second book

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin will write another book, her publisher announced Wednesday.

The new book will “reflect on the key values—both national and spiritual—that have been such a profound part of her life and which continue to inform her vision of the future,” according to HarperCollins.

The 60-plus set can't afford to retire

More people say they just don't have the money to retire these days.

Seventy-two percent of workers over the age of 60 who are putting off retirement are doing so because they can't afford it, according to a survey by Careerbuilder.com, a career resources website.

The results from the survey indicate more pessimism than in 2008, when about 60% of retirement-aged workers blamed the economy for delaying retirement.

"People have taken a step back," said Michael Erwin, a senior career advisor at Careerbuilder.com. "They are keeping an eye to the economy and making sure they feel secure before going ahead with their retirement plans."

I was thinking about Ashburn, got labeled a partisan for saying it was okay because he's a republican. There was mention of Ted Kennedy to offset Ashburn, then Rangel to highlight corruption, then Obama/Richardson to highlight absolutely nothing, a polite disagreement in there, and somehow back to Ashburn... Typical blog-of-consciousness stuff.

Democrats want you to believe they are better people. Republicans want you to believe they have better ideas.

None of them want to deal with the truth and that's why we're in the toilet.

Ashburn should be punished for driving drunk.

Rangel should be run out of Washington on a rail.

I'm surprised it took this long to do anything about Rangel. It still doesn't guarantee any real action which in the end comes down to the voters.

Question for the Room:

There's been no end of acrimony here of late - a lot of folk going around either super-pissed off or, in more cases than I care to think of, going around like they're made of porcelain and have nerve ending ten feet long and curled at the ends, ethereally pure beings who cannot stand a bit of rough back-and-forth.

Life sucks; wear a helmet.

The golden years are tailor made for it. The Dems are masters at scaring the blue-hairs to the polls, with dark warnings that those evil Republicans are going to take away their social security.

Senate rejects Social Security bonus payment

The Senate on Wednesday rejected a proposal by President Barack Obama to give people on Social Security a $250 bonus check.

Republicans and Democratic deficit hawks combined to reject the idea by a 50-47 vote.

Dude. This is no sausage, it's a shit sandwich. If you're having trouble selling your product, the solution isn't add mustard-- it might be time to consider selling sandwiches made of something other than shit.

To take the devil's advocate position on this, and in no way trying to justify it. . . where was the outrage when groups on the left were pumping out similar material over the 8 years prior to Obama? Maybe it was there, but I sure don't remember the media making a fuss over it like this.

two reasons:
1) this is the RNC, not just 'a group', or 'groups' on the right.
2) you're not going to like this, but there was no similar document pushed by the DNC or DCCC.

Fundraising from the DNC and the RNC both rely on fear and hyperbole.

I am shocked, shocked that this might be mentioned in a powerpoint presentation.
