Spidey Gets Axed for ‘Shopping

Weird • Views: 1,728

Peter Parker, aka Spiderman, has been fired from his job as a photographer because he photoshopped some pictures.

Spiderman, the story goes, knows newspaper publisher J. Jonah Jameson, now mayor,is innocent of something heinous (it’s always something heinous, isn’t it?), but the only way he can persuade people of that is to digitally manipulate photos.

He does and loses his job, so Spiderman becomes a victim of the recession, although in these days of widespread layoffs at newspapers prompted by economic forces, the superhero is hardly a typical victim.

I say Jameson was right to fire Parker, even though the photographer was trying to help his boss.

Behind the Headlines is a blog by Si Cantwell, columnist for the StarNews and StarNewsOnline.com. It explores issues of journalism that arise at StarNews Media and elsewhere.

He must be well versed on his topic:

The blog Little Green Footballs graphically explains how it was done in a famous example involving smoke plumes over a bombed Beirut. Reuters later admitted the photo was doctored.

He knows his stuff!

Oh man, I hope this leads to a new story arc where a down-on-his-luck Spidey is forced to crash with Frank Castle and the two become roommates. It’d be awesome! “He’s a wise-cracking smart alec. He’s a murderous psychopath. What wacky hijinks will they get into next?”

11 Dark_Falcon  Wed, Mar 3, 2010 5:22:44pm

And the article gives Charles a well-earned credit, too. I find myself agree with Jameson. A editor of a newspaper has to protect its reputation, and letting someone run a fake photograph does the paper immense damage.

Dutch anti-immigration party gains ground in vote

Early returns in Dutch local elections showed an anti-immigrant, anti-Islam party making big gains in a result seen as a possible foreshadowing of national elections in June.

“We’re going to take the Netherlands back from the leftist elite, that coddles criminals and supports Islamization,” said Freedom Party leader Geert Wilders early Thursday.

District Superintendent Ramon Cortines placed the teachers — all white men who teach first, second and fourth grades — on administrative leave on Tuesday while an investigation is conducted, Pollard-Terry said.

“The superintendent will not let anyone make a mockery out of Black History Month,” she said.

Mocking black heroes?
The issue was brought to district officials’ attention by the Los Angeles chapter of the NAACP after the organization received a complaint early Monday, chapter President Leon Jenkins said.

Jenkins said he felt the teachers acted in concert to mock black heroes and children’s innocence.

“These are not the people we want our young people to emulate or believe these people represent the best of the African-American community,” Jenkins said. “It’s hard for the NAACP to believe this was a mistake.”

World’s Fattest Toddler

She may be just two years old, but Pang Ya is already tipping the scales at 6.5st. The toddler’s size means she now weighs the same as an average female Chinese adult. Although her alarmed parents admit that their daughter has a healthy appetite, they are desperate for help.

Her father said: ‘Doctors can’t figure out the reasons for her obesity, which worries us a lot.’ Pang Ya, who is from Taocun town, Shanxi province, was born weighing an average eight pounds.

A recent government survey declared there are 60 million obese people in China, with the number doubling between 1992 and 2002. Two years ago the country got its first Kentucky Fried Chicken fast food restaurant.

I think I have an idea.

Everybody must get stoned…..

American Family Association: Stone To Death Killer Whale Who Killed Trainer

The American Family Association, a religious right group, is urging that Tillikum (Tilly), the killer whale that killed a trainer at SeaWorld Orlando, be put down, preferably by stoning. Citing Tilly’s history of violent altercations, the group is slamming SeaWorld for not listening to Scripture in how to deal with the animal:

Says the ancient civil code of Israel, “When an ox gores a man or woman to death, the ox shall be stoned, and its flesh shall not be eaten, but the owner shall not be liable.” (Exodus 21:28)

However, the group is going further and laying the blame for the trainer’s death directly at the feet of Chuck Thompson, the curator in charge of animal behavior, because, according to Scripture,

But, the Scripture soberly warns, if one of your animals kills a second time because you didn’t kill it after it claimed its first human victim, this time you die right along with your animal. To use the example from Exodus, if your ox kills a second time, “the ox shall be stoned, and its owner also shall be put to death.” (Exodus 21:29)

SeaWorld has no plans to execute Tilly.

Speaking of newspapers,…

The Danish daily Politiken, which partners with SPIEGEL ONLINE, has reached a settlement with the descendants of the Prophet Muhammad, apologizing for the offence caused by the Muhammad caricatures republished by the paper. Not all politicians in Denmark support the move.

As the first newspaper to do so, Politiken has reached a settlement with descendants of the Prophet Muhammad in connection with the affront its reprint of drawings of the Prophet Muohammad in 2008 may have caused Muslims.

The settlement was reached between Politiken and eight organisations representing 94,923 descendants of the Prophet Muhammad in a move Politiken’s Editor-in-Chief Tøger Seidenfaden says shows that dialogue is the way forward.

“The settlement looks ahead and expresses very sensible views. It may possibly reduce the tensions that have shown themselves to be so resilient. It gives us hope that relations between Denmark, and not least its media, and the Muslim world can be improved,” Seidenfaden says, adding he does not believe Politiken’s move is a freedom of speech sellout.
