jon seems to think that reporting on opinion statistics is the same as reporting opinion. i'm not sure i agree.

or maybe he was saying that because the opinion people cited the same polls, then citing the poll is opinion?

really not sure.

it got better towards the end though- seniors with fox talking points indeed. i usually get my clips on huffington post and this was one of the weakest i thought.

Delingpole, Booker, and the rest of the UK anti-AGW-science media aren't going to be happy with this one:

Review backs man-made global warming

The case for man-made global warming is even stronger than the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change maintained in its official assessments, according to the first scientific review published since December’s Copenhagen conference and subsequent attacks on the IPCC’s credibility.

An international research team led by the UK Met Office spent the past year analysing more than 100 recent scientific papers to update the last IPCC assessment, released in 2007.

What an idiot. What is he going to do? Recruit a kamikaze squadron to crash Piper Cherokees into IRS offices? It might work once (more) but he'd run out of volunteers pretty fast and F-16s would make short work of any who remained. Perhaps they will round up an army of mall ninjas to besiege DC. Along that line, I talked to a fantasy survivalist a while back who was convinced that a .50 BMG rifle would stop a tank. With tactical savvy like that, the siege would be a short one.

The LOST ARG between season two and three was the best one they had, so much non-canon backstory, the producers had a lot of trouble from fans who wanted to see the extra backstory weaved into the series. It probably would have added 2 more years to the series.

What they can do is probably limited to terrorism; sniping attacks and the occasional random bombing. But that doesn't constitute a revolution. It would probably serve only to rally support for the government and further discredit whatever cause the terrs pretended to represent.

I binge games in the middle of the night. Fallout 3 from 11pm to 7am, for weeks. Then I don't game for a while, then I find a new obsession to play. For a while it was Persona 3. Goddamn Japanese RPGS and their 150 hour campaigns...

re: #60 Walter L. Newton

Sorry, Walter, but Valve's ARG involved pushing an update to Portal that made radios give off a sound in certain areas. when those sound files were sent through a slow-scan TV application they resolved into JPEGS. When those JPEGS were arranged in timestamp order and the letters and numbers in them that were circles were sequences, they formed an MD5 hash that led to a BBS board. Once you set your terminal settings alright, you needed to figure out the password, which was in transposed morse code in the sound files.

And once you got through, you got some images that still needed to be arranged and interpreted-- and a new ending to the game was added. People are still figuring out other implications.

It kicked the biggest ass. It was righteous. And when you have an interactive experience you can push content to, rather than just a passive experience, things get a whole lot different.

Bless Valve, so different than the vast majority of other game companies.

And I think many LGF commenters here will be surprised as well. The kneejerk paranoia about health care reform (aka ObamaCare(tm) if you're inclined to seek the counsel of pachyderms) touches this place too.

Hi You...I have only one question about Healthcare..
Will my premiums go up or down upon passage?
If they go down.. It's a wonderful bill and what we needed..
If My premiums skyrocket? You are so fucked Congress...

But it's more than that.. Damnit! I remember being young newlyweds and poor living in Napa and taking my wife to the Emergency room for the flu..
Queen of the Valley in Napa..
A doctor walked out in the waiting room and asked if anyone wanted their temp taken (Flue season).I said yes.. What the heck..My wife was just wiped out... I got a bill for a 100 bucks for sitting in the waiting room getting my temp taken.
100 dollars! I was livid.. I took it all the way to the top.. The Hospital Administrator...
So there I was in the office with sister mary somebody in her frick'n black Habit thinking I was just a good old catholic boy...You guys know me..
I'm pretty polite to people and esp. nuns...
I was so nice when I completely shredded her ethics and morality...
She tried to give me the old stiff upper smug reply 'yes you will pay'
Wrong answer...I said a few things and walked out...She didn't cry before I left..But I promise you she cried after...I never paid the 100 dollars...
I almost sued a Doctor over Nikki's birth.. Wait till you hear that story..

This was just on BoingBoing yesterday.

[Link: www.boingboing.net...]

News broke yesterday that Comedy Central would no longer allow popular video site Hulu to present episodes of "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report."

The Hollywood Reporter asked Viacom if the network intends to go after websites or bloggers who post unauthorized clips.

"Yes, we intend to do so," PR rep Tony Fox told THR. "My feeling is if (websites) are making money on our copyrighted content, then that is a problem."

What a big steaming pile of epic fail. How 'bout blogs (like, oh, let's say Boing Boing) start suing Viacom for every time a Comedy Central writer lifts an idea, a blog post, a funny turn of phrase, or a story—and fails to credit, namecheck or pay us? Cmon guys, you know you do it. Television suit-people, when will you ever learn: we are the internet. We are your traffic machine. We are your idea machine. We are the engine that propels your shows. Why do you treat us like thieves?

I simply mentioned an interesting fact about a LOST ARG from about 4 years ago, and I get back some sort of "religious" sermon about Valve," which I don't even know what it is, I don't really care what it is, and I imagine by Obdicut's enthusiasm, evidently a good ARG.

Other than that... pifffff...

No, I'm just sayin' that my peeps, we all watch it, it's the one bit of TV us 30-somethings agree on, it's aimed at our market with the snarky metanews and such. Same with stuff like The Onion and Infomania. We love people who goof on media!

197 garhighway  Thu, Mar 4, 2010 4:18:44pm

The whining about "my taxes will go up more than my premiums go down" misses the point. The way we pay for health care is broken. Not because it is too expensive (although it is) but because millions are stuck with ER or charity treatment because they are uninsurable in the private marketplace. That is a fundamental injustice and a fundamental drag on our economy. It is a drag on the economy because we have significant numbers of people that can't change jobs because they would lose their coverage due to a now pre-existing condition. I have heard no proposal from the GOP that addresses this point. Tort reform doesn't, multi-state marketing doesn't, HSA's don't. It's a swing and a miss. No private insurer with any choice in the matter will accept a new subscriber with (for example) breast cancer. They just won't. So that person stays put where they have coverage, and can't change jobs (or her spouse can't) because it would leave her uninsured.

The current proposal has a lot of moving parts. But it addresses the fundamental problem and has the virtue of having a chance to pass, which the more radical reforms do not.

But if your analysis of the problem stops at a comparison of your premiums+ taxes before and after, then you are simply missing the whole point of the discussion. Unless you are OK with the status quo. In which case, just say so.

There are points of view other than "okay with the status quo" and "want the bill as presented."

I love Portal so much I think I will buy an Aperture Science coffee mug.

200 Locker  Thu, Mar 4, 2010 5:01:23pm

Well I finally got home and was able to watch the video. Classic Stewart and it helps to ease the fact that we just came home and had to take our cat to the vet. Wife just called and he's going into surgery so this was a good way to get cheered up.

Fox jokes are easy winners but it was obvious from the minute they called themselves "fair and balanced" that I knew they would be the exact opposite. It's a complete con when a slogan decides for you what to think about the subject. I'll decide if something is fair and balanced, trying to deprive me of my own right to interpret is humorously insulting.

What new ending? For Portal or for Half Life 2? Right now I've got the following Valve stuff (3 are non-Valve mods though):

Counter-Strike
Counter-Strike: Source
Day of Defeat
Natural Selection (Fav!)
Half-Life
Half-Life 2
Half-Life 2: Deathmatch
Half-Life 2: Episode One
Half-Life 2: Episode Two
Half-Life 2: Lost Coast
Half-Life: Blue Shift
Half-Life: Opposing Forces
Left 4 Dead
Left 4 Dead 2
Portal
Ricochet
Team Fortress Classic
Team Fortress 2

He, he. Come to think of it, not much at all.

Obama wasted his 60 vote super-majority on his failed, hyper-partisan agenda, what a disappointment. He overplayed his cards and the lame duck Obama presidency is already a busted flush.

You do know the definition of a lame duck, right? It's an officeholder (usually near end of term) who can't get anything done. If Obama finally gets HCR passed, by definition he's not a lame duck.

As for hyper-partisan, that's a hollow talking point--it's dittohead speak. Issue after issue, adviser after adviser, he's hardly a hyper-partisan: Iraq, Afghanistan, gay rights, single payer, public option, Robert Gates, Ben Bernanke, Paul Volcker.

I only watch Fox when I'm over at my parent's house when I visit them at the end of every week. It is pretty bad but I tend to find MSNBC just as obnoxious which is why as a general rule I tend to stay away from cable news and just read what comes off the wire services which isn't perfect but I prefer it to listening to the morons on various cable news networks.

The other thing that Fox does is it it'll pick some dreadful crime story from part of the country and sensationalize the hell out of it. For all I know the other networks do the same but Fox is pretty obnoxious about it.
