It's review of a book by Wesley J Smith. Actually, less of a review than an unhappy demolition. Smith has been 'on the team' for National Review for year, so their review of his book is something of a surprise. Nonetheless, its quite good.

8:49 PM ET -- Gunman is American, instead of security pass a gun. The chief of the Pentagon Protection Force Agency held a press conference just minutes ago. The chief said that the alleged attacker is a male American. Officers involved told the chief that the suspect calmly approached Pentagon police to gain access to the building and reached into a pocket and pulled out a gun that he then fired. The chief said that the alleged attacker's injuries are "critical."

The announcement is part of a campaign by Hamas to introduce more Islamic customs to the Gaza Strip.
The Interior Ministry have said there will be legal consequences for anyone who disobeys the new rule, but they have not specified what they might be.

Ah, a music thread. I missed a discussion about Led Zeppelin the other day, & would like to toss in my .02.
I believe that they were much more accomplished, varied, and influential than they get credit for. With "Kashmir", Led Zeppelin can claim to have helped invent world music. There was supposed to be something called "acoustic metal" in the 90s. I never heard it, but I doubt if it was more thrilling than "Gallows Pole" or "Poor Tom". And of course, Zeppelin gets the credit for fathering heavy metal. Never mind that Blue Cheer was the first heavy metal band, and that most of today's headbangers trace their lineage from cartoonish bands like Black Sabbath. It was Zeppelin that scaled the heights and set the benchmark for everyone else to shoot for.
Led Zeppelin did just what Jimmy Page said they were doing: chiaroscuro. Light and dark, blended together in some of the richest compositions in all of rock. There was plenty of riff-bashing, sure; but there was plenty else too. At one time I made a tape of their acoustic and slow numbers--how many other heavy metal acts have ninety minutes of quality easy listening material, eh? Usually, if a fan goes to listen to an old band that influenced his favorite current band, he'll hear a pallid version of the contemporary act. But of all the ancestors of modern hard rock, Led Zeppelin is one of the very few who overshadow nearly all of their descendants.
From top to bottom and from beginning to end, Led Zeppelin's catalog has the leanest junk-to-jewels ratio of any major act, possibly excepting the Beatles. And I say this not as a mindless booster, but as someone who actually likes The Who more than Zeppelin. But you've gotta acknowledge greatness when you see it.

Google believes that in three years or so desktops will give way to mobile as the primary screen from which most people will consume information and entertainment. That’s according to Google Europe boss John Herlihy who said that smart phones enhance Google’s mission to make information universal.

That reminds me of a CNN story (a few years old now, sorry, no link) about the first female barber of men's hair in Egypt. She was a fairly attractive 40-something lady with happy male customers lined up around the corner. It was a bit shocking to see all these men tickled pink that a friendly lady would chat wtih them and cut their hair. She got hassled by the authorities a bit, but she broke no law, and the piles of money made up for it.

Ugh. It was bad enough when broadcast news reduced large, complex stories to a single sound bite. Now we're faced with an onslaught of info-bites.
Is reading so fucking hard?
I suppose it won't belong before Google simply implants chips directly into our brains, and we can sit, drool, and think high-minded thoughts like, "Duhr...hungry...cold...sweet" and Google's massive infrastructure will manage to drop a bowl of ice cream in our lap that isn't quite what we wanted, but we'll make do with it.

Looks like the story is spreading...
US facing surge in rightwing extremists and militias
The US is facing a surge in anti-government extremist groups and armed militias, driven by deepening hostility on the right to Barack Obama, anger over the economy, and the increasing propagation of conspiracy theories by parts of the mass media such as Fox News.
The Southern Poverty Law Centre, the US's most prominent civil rights group focused on hate organisations, said in a report that extremist "patriot" groups "came roaring back to life" last year as their number jumped nearly 250% to more than 500 with deepening ties to conservative mainstream politics.
They have a picture accompanying the story. Before you look... care to guess who?

re: #11 The Sanity Inspector
The main reason LZ doesn't get the credit they deserve is that the frumpy rock critics of the era trashed them mercilessly. These hacks didn't know what to make of something that wasn't "pretty" or respectful of traditional blues (like the Stones, Beatles, et al.)
They saw Zep as a perversion of legitimate music, so just dismissed them out of hand. Which is of course absurd.
You're right about the chiaroscuro effect--much of their music just sounds otherworldly. And it's not due to effects or heavy synth use.
Agreed on the Who. Their mistake was staying together after Moon died. Led Zeppelin had the good sense to realize that Bonzo's death meant the end of the band. So they didn't continue putting out mediocre stuff (like the Who) or going on umpteen successively lamer reunion tours (again, the Who, I've seen 3 of theirs, but won't get fooled again).

The 2 Palestinian families (one Christian, one Sunni) who I've counted as friends have told me this very thing. The weekly trip to the beauty shop was pretty normal for middle class women during peacetime. Also, the Christians never covered their hair, but then the Christian family came to the US in the 70s. ALSO, there are fashionable and almost sultry ways to wear a head covering - just covering the back of the head, long strands coming out on this side and the other of the fabric, expressive and sultry almond shaped eyes under the lock of hair. Did I say sultry twice? Yup!

Yeah, it sometimes got annoying but the speculation was often helpful. I just skimmed the Hot Air comments on the Pentagon shooting. They're pretty nervous that he might end up being a Tea Partier.
The ricin thing was particularly annoying. Some Lizard linked a story about it which included the perp's distinctly European name, and several hundred comments later a rather small group were carrying on with the "how much you wanna bet he has a middle eastern sounding name". In my head I was screaming "RTFA"!
As far as the pentagon thing goes, suicide by cop seems most likely, unless the person/people were completely bonkers. I mean, that's like kicking a bear in the nuts unprovoked, on purpose. Who the hell does that?

89 | freetoken Thu, Mar 4, 2010 7:16:02pm |
I know, I know, there are two AGW threads downstairs already... but for various reasons I'm avoiding posting the follow down there. Anyway, there is another point to be made:
Climate scientists plot to hit back at skeptics
Undaunted by a rash of scandals over the science underpinning climate change, top climate researchers are plotting to respond with what one scientist involved said needs to be "an outlandishly aggressively partisan approach" to gut the credibility of skeptics.
In private e-mails obtained by The Washington Times, climate scientists at the National Academy of Sciences say they are tired of "being treated like political pawns" and need to fight back in kind. Their strategy includes forming a nonprofit group to organize researchers and use their donations to challenge critics by running a back-page ad in the New York Times.
"Most of our colleagues don't seem to grasp that we're not in a gentlepersons' debate, we're in a street fight against well-funded, merciless enemies who play by entirely different rules," Paul R. Ehrlich, a Stanford University researcher, said in one of the e-mails.
[...]
Point being this... once the camel gets its nose under the tent, it won't stop. Now the Washington Times is piling on with some supposedly new and nefarious emails. They throw in Paul Erlich's name because they know that will be a hot button. Later in the article they throw in some quotes by Judith A. Curry that seem to imply that climate science isn't good enough, but this is the same Judith Curry I believe said a few years ago in front of Congress that "...it [is] very difficult to maintain a credible position of scientific skepticism regarding the influence of humans on global warming."
The populist/revanchist/rightwing is in full anti-science mode right now, and they are going for blood.

Just finished validating a decent reason for social networking. Got an instant message from my cousin's wife (they live in Toronto, Canada) asking for my parent's number (they winter in Palm Springs). Seems my Auntie Ethna's in the hospital in Florida. I tried calling my folks, then my sister, who my cousin already knew was in Vegas for the weekend, and left messages. She pinged me back a minute ago to say that my folks were in Vegas visiting with my sister (no surprise there....any reason to go to Vegas is good enough for my mom), and that everyone was all hooked up and my dad (a retired doctor) was talking to the hospital in Florida to get an understanding of the medical condition my mom's sister was in.

Temporary marriage is another warped arrangement from that part of the world.
"I am 23 years old," one unnamed young man told the paper. "If I temporarily marry a young woman for three years and then divorce her, would anyone be willing to marry her? It would be impossible that any man would want to have a family with this woman."
Another unidentified caller was quoted as saying: "Those who want to promote temporary marriage don't understand that they would be promoting prostitution. Who would be there to be a father for the children from temporary marriage?"
The paper wrote back: "The reality is that young men and women do have sexual relationships. If these relationships are defined within an Islamic framework, we will not have the danger of prostitution."
As for what to do about children of temporary marriages, the editor added, "It is not so complicated to use birth control anymore."

I got to visit the track while attending a fraternity convention in the mid 90s. Got to Indy fairly often in the late 90s and early 2000s since I was serving on my fraternity's national board and their HQ was in/near there.
Moved from the state in 1973, but saw the house I lived in about three years ago and barely recognized it and the surrounding area. Saplings my father planted in the front yard were now full-fledged trees a couple of feet in diameter. Development had taken out some of the places I wandered in as a child. And what I thought of as hills... well, you get eastward or westward from there far enough and you see what hilly terrain really is.
I did love the fact that a short bicycle ride could get one away from traffic and onto the back farm roads where it was trees, fields, and scenery.
Oh, there was mention of Metamora in a thread a few days back. I've been there a few times too. Remember the aqueduct quite vividly even after about forty years.

...For instance, the body of Germans who served as Hitler's willing executioners would each have challenged every suggestion that so-called "concentration camps" were inappropriate for discussion in the wikiverse. The general lack of ability to predict the future means that it is often difficult to distinguish suppressionist editing from other philosophies such as exclusionism and deletionism.
As a hypothetical example of suppressionism, various individuals associated with the w:United States Government demonstrated a strong motivation, in 2002, to suppress and discredit every piece of evidence to support the assertion that the government of w:Iraq was not in possession of w:weapons of mass destruction. Individuals with this institutional motivation, will naturally see suppressionism as an appropriate editing philosophy.

Yes, but this isn't torture. It's taking advantage of a fortuitous situation. Big difference.

Progressive Scottish Muslims
A blog by Dr. Amanullah De Sondy which hopes to open up many critical and timely topics of discussion for the next generation of Scottish Muslims to start thinking, pondering and reflecting on their words and actions as believers in Islam with courage and commitment on this spiritual struggle. The time is right for Progressive Scottish Muslims to imbue their hearts with God's love and make some noise about it!

It probably is more subtle than that. Technically he didn't attack the Pentagon, per se, but pulled out a weapon. If the guy arrested is really the guy on the audio, this would be a classic stunt to draw attention to his ravings, thus ensuring himself a kind of immortality in the nexus of Truthers.

geez!
I've BEEN to the Pentagon, thru that very Subway terminal. Healthy Respect is the term I would use to describe my feelings at the time. I don't know what term others might use.
Back in my ban-the-bomb protester days, we used to visit the Pentagon en masse. With permits and advance notice, of course. But still - we'd show up with a hundred people, including funny-looking Buddhist monks from Hiroshima and Nagasaki banging on loud-ass drums, and go into the building and stage all kinds of actions. I thought I was entering the Belly of the Beast, first time, and fully expected to be arrested and beaten into a pulp.
The men and women there were nothing but professional and polite. They honored our right of freedom of speech and assembly as though we were on the town common in Boston. Some even came up to us and said they agreed about the danger of installing Pershing II intermediate-range missiles in Germany with a launch-to-impact time of four (or was it six?) minutes to Moscow.
It takes a special kind of asshole - with a gun - to get shot at the Pentagon. And I'll bet you dollars to Chinese doughnuts they didn't fire until he actually pointed the damn thing at someone.
Hats off to our professional men and women at the Pentagon!

re: #324 Killgore Trout
Great Cthulhu's Tentacles! That is awful.
LYRICS:
Something is wrong with America.
She once held the Bible as her conscience and guide;
But we've allowed those who hold nothing to be sacred,
Like Sodom of old, to push morals aside.
Where are the men who once stood for right
And the women who championed their cause?
We must return to the values we left
Before this country we love is totally lost.Chorus:
We want America back;
We want America back
From those who have no self control;
We want America back.
This nation is like a runaway train
Headed down the wrong track;
It's time for the army of God to arise and say,
"We want America back!"Recitation:
I love America but I do not love what she has become.
Scripture says, "Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD."
And America has forgotten the Godly foundation upon which she was built.
Something is wrong.Our children are asked to attend public schools that, in many cases, resemble war zones,
without even the most basic right of any soldier--the right to pray to the God in Heaven.
Many times the wild-eyed, drug-addicted, gun-carrying teenager is allowed to stay in school
while our Supreme Court decided to expel God from the classroom over 30 years ago.
Something is wrong.Television daily bombards the senses of our nation that wrong is right,
that the abnormal is normal, that the abhorrent is acceptable,
and that what God calls an abomination is nothing more than an alternative lifestyle.
And it's had an effect.
Thirty years ago the number one television program in America was the Andy Griffith Show.
Look what we have today.
Something is wrong.When our government can pass out contraceptives to children in school without parental consent
and, yet, the Gideons can no longer pass out the Bible on campus,
Something is wrong.When our leaders can say to your children and mine
that pre-marital sex is all right as long as it's safe,
Yes, something is wrong!And I, for one, am ready for a change.
I will say to my government, "I'm not raising dogs in my house,
I'm raising children created in the image and likeness of Almighty God
and I'm going to teach them the Bible.
If the Bible says it's right, it's right.
And if the Bible says it's wrong, it's wrong!"The only hope that America has is that Godly men and women of character
will stand together as one mighty army and declare to the immoral, the impure, the obscene and the foul;
"Your days of unlimited access to the minds of America are over.
The army of God that has been silent too long is taking America back!Chorus:
We want America back;
We want America back
From those who have no self control;
We want America back.
This nation is like a runaway train
Headed down the wrong track;
It's time for the army of God to arise and say,
"We want America back!"

The Pentagon has everything, of course, including the biggest PX in the world.
For one of our protests I came up with a brilliant idea. If you recall, one of the biggest problems in America at the time (much bigger than it is now, though it's getting close again) was homelessness.
Reagan was responsibe, directly and indirectly, for cutting funding to federal and state mental hospitals. It was euphemistically termed "de-institutionalization", but in practice it meant turning all these seriously ill people who couldn't possibly make it on their own out on the streets and cutting them loose with no meds, no support, no income. Meanwhile, all the money was going to military projects.
So a lot of them would break into abandoned cars and live there. There were also loads of abandoned cars in those days. You think DC looks like a shithole now? Time-travel back to the Eighties with me. It was a ready-made set for "Bladerunner".
Anyway, my idea was to go to the junkyard and get an abandoned car. Done. For $50. Then we fixed it up with curtains and a sign that said "This Is the House the Pentagon Built!" Hired a towing company. Went to bed giggling thinking of the next morning's fun.
And the next morning, up comes this tow truck on the front lawn, the one facing the Potomac, and drops this decrepit station wagon - the old kind with the fake would trim that peeled like paint, remember? - off, right in the faces of all the brass coming and going.
I thought surely we'd all be tortured until they gave me up as the ringleader.
The head security guy took about ten minutes to confer with the higher-ups and then rather testily radioed for a Pentagon tow-rig to get rid of the thing.
And that was that.

Love it, but the PX in the building was pretty small (that's your pinko commie propaganda). The supporting bases like McNair and Belvoir have big stores. The first Wednesday that I ever visited there, I saw people wandering the halls with little wooden hammers. My escorts took me to lunch in a neat little snack building in the very center of the interior ring courtyard. Wednesday was crab day. The name of the snack bar was "Ground Zero".

Right. It's funny to hear them talk about 30 years ago like it was the perfect state. All revolving around The Andy Griffith Show. Let's see, 30 years ago. Race riots, massive anti-war protests, a divided nation over the Vietnam War, lingering pockets of Jim Crow laws, near the peak of homicide rates, etc. Yeah, things were great. Uh huh.

In 1963 we all had our dreams of goin’ back home…
When we were off duty, some of us built cats and trimarines in Vietnam and Hong Kong, on military leave, to realize that very dream.
Always looking forward with great expectations to the day we might go home…although 53,000 of our sorry souls perished…!
Back in the really olde early sixty’s in Vietnam and Laos, the Kingston Trio was really, really big, with us sorry arse, goddamn killers.
Today their powerful lyrics and many songs still evoke powerful memories for me.
We were soldiers once...yes we were...
