Pentagon Shooter: Another Violent Anti-Government Loon?

US News • Views: 8,529

The Associated Press reports:

WASHINGTON — AP sources: Suspect in Pentagon shooting identified as 36-year-old John Patrick Bedell.

The Internet Archive has a series of deranged audio files by “JPatrickBedell:” Internet Archive: Free Download: Directions to Freedom, part two (25 November 2006).

And a JPatrickBedell is also the author of this bizarre page at Wikipedia; he’s apparently a 9/11 Truther and a devotee of libertarian icon Ludwig Von Mises: User:JPatrickBedell - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

There is no right-wing extremism. It’s all lies and agents provocateurs.

Pentagon shooting? Is this a new one, or something that happened a while ago?

Man shoots 2 officers outside Pentagon

(CNN) — A man coolly and calmly approached the screening area outside the Pentagon Thursday evening and opened fire, grazing two Pentagon police officers before they returned fire, critically wounding him, officials said.

I checked Bedell’s wiki page, and I can’t say if he’s a right-wing extremist or a left-winger; his mangled thoughts seem to be all over the map.

Suspect is dead:

Officials: Pentagon shooting suspect dies

WASHINGTON — The D.C. Medical Examiner’s Office says the alleged shooter at the Pentagon has died.

Beverly Fields, chief of staff of the D.C. medical examiner’s office, said the body of 36-year-old John Patrick Bedell arrived at the medical examiner’s office shortly after midnight.

Bedell was shot by two Pentagon police officers after authorities say he drew a weapon from his pocket and opened fire at a security checkpoint into a Pentagon subway entrance.

The two police officers received bullet wounds but were not seriously hurt.

I have a problem with false equivalencies. Like anyone pretending that Code Pink, as wacko as they are, are anything like the crazy currently on the far extremist right.
That’s your problem right there, see. They aren’t exact opposites. You have to go back a couple of decades to see anything like the violence or rhetoric about violence on the left that we have all over the fringe right at the moment.

This guy could be anything, but as CJ noted, his profile so far fits the teabaggers rhetoric like a glove.
And let’s not pretend I’m denying that there aren’t violent random wackos on the left either. We did have the unibomber. But the anti-gubbmint types acting out right now are on the right.

Note the Latin. Used on purpose so only the Pope (aka The Scarlet Woman, aka The Great Beast (το μεγα φηριον), aka The Whore of Babylon) and I can read it. Unless you take the correspondence course.

“Novus Ordo Saeclorum” = flat-out New World Order! What, do you need me to spell it out for you?

“Annuit Coeptis” = “may he [Old Scratch] look with favor on what we have begun”! (The destruction of Christianity and morals.)

Rubbish. Obdicut asked for examples of violent action from the left. You came up with one guy who shot a soldier from a couple of years ago.
It was entirely relevant, in the context of establishing that the violence isn’t currently coming from the left, to point out that there are at least 6 shootings of law enforcement personnel carried out by people on the right within just the last year.
Although I think I need to extend that to 14 months, so I’ll grant that.

John Patrick Bedell’s Gunfight With Pentagon Cops: Crazier than Crazy Teabag Offshoot?

When J(ohn) Patrick Bedell was served with a search warrant by the Irvine, CA PD on June 6, 2006, Detectives encountered a similar demeanor. From the police report:

Upon serving the warrant, Detective Anderson knocked on the front door and advised our intent […] and he demanded entry. After making two advisements, at approximately 20 seconds, a male subject, later identified as John Bedell, answered the door. Bedell stood there starting at Detective Anderson. Detective Anderson told Bedell to get down on the ground. Bedell stood there and did not comply. Detective Anderson ordered Bedell down once again and he still did not comply. Bedell just stood there in the doorway refusing to move or even acknowledge he was being spoken to.

Bedell’s mulishness continued. As a detective was walking Bedell through his residence, the software engineer simply stopped and refused to go any further. Then, stranger still, he went completely limp. Detectives did not feel him to be a threat, so they searched his place and found 16 marijuana plants as well as a gardening system for the plants on the rear patio.

The man believed that the Kennedy killing was done by the government, that the government controls the drug trade and stomps out the competition and caused 9/11.

Is it not enough to believe he was mentally disturbed?

Many on the left hold similar beliefs. Are those that do also mentally disturbed? No.

He wanted to create a new monetary standard based on Marijuana.

Why try to claim that mentally ill people represent any particular political point of view?

This particular shooter was definitely of the right wing persuasion. I was just responding to questions involving the far left and violence. We see the leftist anti-poverty coalition, Israeli Anti-Apartheid Week, radical feminists, and Islamists enabling and meeting together in Toronto regularly.

Define ‘radical feminist’. Links, please. Especially to the ones you say are meeting in Toronto.
Then establish that they are, in fact, representative of radical feminists.
I’m a radical feminist. That term doesn’t mean what many claim it does.

Islamists fit into the political spectrum in Canada. A few years ago, a version of Sharia Law was almost passed in Ontario. Only an international Muslim Woman’s organization and one Liberal cabinet minister stopped it from being made Law. It was a done deal before that.

Does Major Hassan killing soldiers at Fort Hood count as Far Left? That’s a convergence point between radical Islam and the left, isn’t it? He was certainly against the U.S. army fighting in Muslim countries.

There is far more convergence between Islamists and the far right, especially the religious right. Just a few areas of convergence off the top of my head:

Science denialists? Check!

Well, this matches the Wiki profile:

Pentagon Shooting Suspect From Hollister

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A Hollister man accused of shooting two officers at the Pentagon complex died from his wounds Thursday.

Law enforcement sources identified the suspect as John Patrick Bedell, 36. Bedell died hours after being admitted to a hospital in critical condition from injuries he received when officers returned gunfire, authorities said.

Bedell was a 1991 graduate of San Benito High School and attended UC-Santa Cruz, where he received a degree in physics. Bedell also did graduate work at San Jose State University.

The Hollister Free Lance newspaper reported that local sources confirmed Bedell is the son of Kaye Bedell, the director of Allied Health at Gavilan College, and his father is John Bedell, Sr., a local financial planner.

The Washington Post reported that when a call was made to a home in Hollister, a man identified himself as John Bedell and said he had a 36-year-old son in the Washington D.C. area named John Patrick Bedell before hanging up…

This from his Wiki profile:

I have a bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and studied biochemistry at San Jose State University. I’ve studied electrical engineering with the goal of creating microsystems for molecular analysis.

In his chapter “Terrorism in democracies: Its social and political bases” (_Origins of Terrorism: Psychologies, Ideologies, Theologies, States of Mind_), Ted Robert Gurr made a distinction that explains the recent (post-election) increased concern about and instances of right-wing domestic terrorism:

“There are two main routes by which (some of the members of) such groups come to accept extreme means: radicalization and reaction. Radicalization refers to a process in which the group has been mobilized in pursuit of a social and political objective but has failed to make enough progress toward the objective to satisfy all the activists…Reaction is an analytically distinct process in which members of a regional, communal, or political group resort to terrorism in response to threatening social change, or intervention by authorities. Whereas radicalization characterizes groups with future-oriented objectives, reaction occures in defense of a group’s threatened rights or status.” [pp. 87,89]

Whereas Gurr would recommend public policies of backlash against violence, deterrence against criminals, and political reform, I see that the Dems agenda is the opposite of political refom, which must be focused upon increasing Justice by using law to protect individual rights.

OK, I see it. Kind of slow here today. Here’s a perfect example:

The blatant violations of the Constitution’s limitations on the economic role of the government, accomplished through many subtle usurpations over many decades, are perhaps even more pernicious than, and are certainly a key motivation for, the violent seizure of the United States government.

In order to establish a firm basis for justice and sound government, the economic role of the government must be reexamined in every detail.

It must be recognized that arguments for government control of the economy, and government redistribution of economic resources, are generally misguided or even shameless lies to advance enslavement and conceal theft and murder.

Furthermore, it must, once again, be recognized that the most successful means to ensure justice, secure domestic tranquility, and promote prosperity is to ensure the security of private property.

I chopped that up into sentences from his last paragraph. It’s a typical example of Tea Party rhetoric and Constitutional Party rhetoric.

re: #145 Dark_Falcon

What does it mean? Please keep in mind that I’m very seldom a fan of radical anything.

Hey DF. Quick post here as I have to talk to Jimmah— the ‘radical’ only refers to the Latin radicalis “of roots”. Radical Feminism seeks the source or root of women’s oppression and identifies it as being the source of all oppression everywhere— that is, that the oppression of women was the first sort of oppression in human history and is the model for all other forms of oppression.

It also locates the source or root of women’s oppression in biology— specifically, female sexuality and reproduction. It identifies the control of female sexuality and female reproductve life as central to the oppression of women. (this is not to deny that there are other forms of oppression, it just places the primary locus of the oppression of women as rooted there).

Consequently a radical feminist, at the very least, will believe that ensuring women’s sexual and reproductive autonomy is central to the liberation of women.

Some will go further and argue that the oppression of women is ‘worse’ than all other kinds of oppression. I don’t play that game; I’m not interested in grading who is oppressed more, and I’m opposed to oppression full stop, but that is a consequence of my being a humanist, not only a feminist.

But when we consider the world as a whole, and that women make up 51 percent of that world, and look at the condition of women worldwide, (which is also something a radical feminist is interested in, not merely women in the US, or western industrialised nations) there is no doubt that the oppression of women is more widespread than that of any other single group, and that’s purely a consequence of population stats.
Hope this helps.

re: #176 iceweasel

Oh also you’ll find all kinds of infighting among groups that call themselves radical feminists over what that term means and what strategies to adopt. Some of the wacko anti-porn agitators of the 80’s would have called themselves radical feminists, but they were obsessed with controlling porn in the US, rather than, say, worrying about female circumscsion in africa and elsewhere. They also located the source of women’s oppression in porn, which is laughable.

Anyway that Jagger book on Feminist Theories is an excellent basic primary on feminism.

No prob— the term is thrown around a lot and even people who have some notion of the varities of feminism tend to identify it with someone like, say, dworkin. (who in my opinion had like two good things to say, and a lot of crazy to say).

But the definition I gave, which is the central definition, would apply to someone like Mandy, I believe. I havne’t talked to her enough about feminism and lots of people who ARE feminists don’t like the word feminism. But honestly, given the concern I know she does have for women’s rights, esp in the areas of reproductive freedom and sexual autonomy, she’s one of us whether she knows it or not. :)
So are a lot of people here, actually!

re: #179 Dark_Falcon

Hey DF- this is a dead thread and all, but just wanted to say:

When you’re dealing with philosophical theories of feminism, there are two central questions: 1) How are women oppressed and 2) What action do we take?
The answer you give to one informs the other. In terms of my answer to 2, I’m basically in the old liberal feminist tradition, in which ‘liberal’ doesn’t mean ‘left’, but ‘liberal’ in the sense all Americans share: liberal democracy, classically liberal, Enlightenment ideals. That is also just feminism full stop in many ways: it’s just humanism, and the ‘radical’ idea that women are people who should have all the same rights as men.

Liberal feminism advocates as the answer to 2 that we seek to redress wrongs legally, by ensuring women legally have all the same rights and protections as men, by advocating overturning laws that oppress women, and the like. But I am a radical feminist because I don’t agree that laws alone are the source or root of female oppression— there is much, much more at work, certain mindsets and ideas about women.

So, whether people know it or not, or like to use the term ‘feminist’ or not, everyone on this blog is a feminist, AFAIK, in the sense of being a humanist and committed to extending the American and Enlightenment ideas about equality to women as well as to men. Standard JS Mill stuff on the rights of women.

My original avatar quote here was from Rebecca West, and it was partly a joke because I do in fact know what feminism is, as well as a bit about the various versions of it, and I’m ripping on the way that the word is misunderstood and demonised and now rejected even by those who are feminists, but the sentiment stands and is one people would agree with:

I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is: I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat or a prostitute.

You are missing the point of the fact that it is and was legitimate to demand Bush’s impeachment - particularly once you set the standard of impeachment at the level of an illicit blow job.

He absolutely and demonstrably lied about the atomic activities in Iraq.

He violated US law to unlawfully spy on American citizens.

He violated US law on the treatment of prisoners. I am sorry, but it is not legal to torture people. Everyone knows that. This is why the right wing spent so much energy trying to redefine what torture is. And even without going into that can of worms, flying people to Syria to be tortured involves things that no one would call not torture.

Umm everything there was true, and even by your standards, and assuming you are correct in the fullest possible way about standards of impeachment, lying about a BJ is much less awful than lying about spying on Americans, lying about torture and lying to start a war.

lying about spying on Americans, lying about torture and lying to start a war.

Look, you obviously have an opinion about what the Bush administration said, or didn’t say. You, Code Pink, Rosie O’Donnel and should have a good time with that. The lack of actual evidence is the only thing stopping you guys from moving forward. Personally I don’t see any difference between that crap and Birthers, but hey again… good luck.

Perjury is a crime…. if it about a blow job or a bank robbery. It isn’t the act that you are denying that matters, but the willful act of swearing a false oath.

Clinton was a lawyer, and he knew what he was doing, and what he should have done.

I personally don’t care about the blow job…. The work place sexual harassment and perjury means more…. BUT clearly on the left that stuff doesn’t matter (See David Letterman).

Torturing prisoners is a crime, for the president to violate the will of congress with illegal spying on Americans was a crime. Lying to start a war on false pretenses may not be a crime, but it should be.
