What Right Wing Racism?

Politics • Views: 3,245

This comes as no surprise to anyone who’s been reading the comments at right wing sites like Free Republic or Hot Air (where Michelle Obama is often compared to a gorilla, as we’ve documented at LGF), but now the craziness is breaking out into the open, as a prominent right winger in Tennessee sends out an email comparing the First Lady to a chimpanzee.

Walt Baker, the prominent CEO of the powerful Tennessee Hospitality Association who was a key figure in gaining approval of the controversial $585 million convention center, sent the kind of “joke” email last night — comparing First Lady Michelle Obama to Tarzan’s Cheeta — that might stop even Michael Richards in his tracks. (The entire email on the jump.)

Baker forwarded the racist missive — introduced with this: “Quoting Larry the Cable Guy … I don’t care who you are, this is funny” — to 12 prominent Nashvillians, including mayoral legislative aide Toby Compton, Nashville

Convention & Visitors’ Bureau head Butch Spyridon, lobbyists Joe Hall and Peter Heidenreich, former Scene editor and publisher, respectively, Bruce Dobie and Albie Del Favero, and Nashville Post reporter Ken Whitehouse.

Coming from a hospitality czar, the post didn’t strike recipients as particularly hospitable.

“I don’t think it’s funny — period,” Dobie says. “Anything else I have to say about it I’ve already let Walt know.”

Whitehouse calls the email “disgusting.”

Here’s the email Baker sent:

From: Walt Baker

To: Albie DelFavero, Bruce Dobie, Butch Spyridon, Joe Hall, Peter Heidenreich, Terry Clements, Toby Compton, Chuck Creasy, Rob Moorefield, Ken Whitehouse, Paul Brown, Bob Davis

Date: March 4, 2010 9:18:29 PM CST

Quoting Larry the Cable Guy…I don’t care who you are, this is funny…

I was at the store yesterday, and I ran into Tarzan! I asked him how it was going and if he was into anymore movies.

He told me that he could no longer make any more movies as he had severe arthritis in both shoulders and could no longer swing from vine to tree.

I asked how Jane was doing, he told me she was in bad shape, in a nursing home, has Alzheimer’s and no longer recognizes anyone, how sad. I asked about Boy, and he told me that Boy had gone to the big city, got hooked up with bad women, drugs, alcohol, and the only time he heard from him was if he was in trouble or needed something.

I asked about Cheeta, he beamed and said she was doing good, had married a Lawyer and now lived in the White House!!!

Sigh... not thinking.

Its only okay to compare white people to monkeys because we've never been considered the "inferior race", that and there should be a simple standard about this kind of thing.

If you aren't a member of that racial group you shouldn't make jokes about it.

For example I am white so I feel no shame in posting this....

Vile and stupid. This return of racism turns my stomach. This asshole Baker needs to be stepped on, hard and fast. If some people don't like it and decide to go fishing on election day, fine. I'd rather lose an election than win with the support of people like that.

As it should. Racism in any form is just mind-numbing idiocy.

To paraphrase Henry Rollins, skin color is a speed bump less than an inch high on the road of life. If you can't get over that, you're a moron.

7 Fat Bastard Vegetarian  Sat, Mar 6, 2010 8:14:43pm

It's nice to know that every day the bar is raised on who can be the "stupidest".

The guy should lose any position, if not for the racism, for the lack of common sense.

re: #5 avanti

His fake apology just underlines his asshole status.

Baker is CEO of the Tennessee Hospitality Association. He apologized in an email to Metro Council members Saturday, suggesting that he had been misinterpreted:

"Thursday night I spontaneously forwarded - to a small group of people - an email that had been sent to me as political humor," Baker wrote. "As I forwarded it, I did not think or consider its implications, other than that it was political humor. I am saddened that anyone misinterpreted the sentiments behind the email. I deeply apologize to anyone who is offended by this action. I hope that those who know me realize that the message was not intended to be malicious or hurtful in any way and can find it in their hearts to forgive me.”

9 _RememberTonyC  Sat, Mar 6, 2010 8:16:51pm

let's forget for a moment how nauseating the message is. how fucked up do you have to be to think it's funny?

racism is a bipartisan historical fact in America...if your perspective is so narrow and your education so limited then I suppose you could say it's a right wing thing for now...otherwise there are plenty of democrat racists, but to ply their minority votes, it's veiled in liberal politics

I'd be interested to learn more about this convention he "sold" to the people of Nashville. So far it looks like it's being funded by public funds and "substantial federal UDAG grant...used to pay debt service for about 20 years..." Some of the funding that will be used and as boasted by the racist mentioned in this article will be provided with hotel tax revenue. I wonder, if racism, like gay prejudice, cell phone usage, and the internet, are just things that will take generational change to resolve. I was born & raised in So.Cal., but the racist attitudes that I experienced at home, still pop into my mind. I know they're not right, but they are what I was raised with. I think the tide of change is rising, but it may take a whole generation. or more, to be rid of tese attitudes.

Good comment from Nashville:

John Marion:

You can gauge a person's character when they make a mistake by their reaction(s) to it. In this case, the absolute WORST reaction is to say 1) no racist intent was meant in the first place while 2) apologize if anyone was so foolish to be offended.

Most of us Southerners are not fools. We are continually aware that we must tread on thin ice when it comes to race, because we are assumed guilty for any slip that is race-related in any way.

What concern's me about too many of Tennessee's leaders, is the absolute naivete regarding this basic fact. I don't hear nearly the level of these ignorant actions going on in other southern states (even Mississippi). When it does happen, the reactions are swift and stern. Remember what happened in Virginia to Senator George Allen?

And yes, anyone with common sense knows this was racist. I have to shamefully admit there was a time earlier in my life I would have found this e-mail funny. We all know what was meant. You will get more respect back and receive forgiveness by just "fessing up" and saying your sorry. [Link: blogs.nashvillescene.com...]

Good point. I'm sure plenty of the far left go too far to help minorities because they think minorities can't live life on their own or are inherently disadvantaged. That's just as bad as right wing racism, IMO.

You have to remember, Old Pre Civil War Southern Democrates didn't breed their slaves to be beautiful, but to be big and strong so that they could carry the bales of cotten. It's nice to see that the decendants of slavery are still loyal to their former owners.
Why isn't PETA up in arms. That's dissing Cheeta if you ask me. What's her name would have to have a makeover to look as good as Cheeta.

Isn't having a Marxist President great? If anyone has a complaint, it should be the chimps. Making that comparison is actually being pretty darn kind to Michelle.
I've never said she looked like any thing outside the human species...but I am still not convinced she hasn't gone through gender reassignment.
Preposterous! The First Lady looks nothing like a chimpanzee. She does, however, greatly resemble Chewbacca.

In the past, when O'Reilly or Hannity needed some quick filler they would comment-mine DailyKos (or other liberal blogs) for outrageous comments they could paint the entire left with. 'Seems they should look in to cleaning up their own backyard before going down that road again.

In the past, when O'Reilly or Hannity needed some quick filler they would comment-mine DailyKos (or other liberal blogs) for outrageous comments they could paint the entire left with. 'Seems they should look in to cleaning up their own backyard before going down that road again.

You can go to Free Republic, do a topic search on "Michelle Obama" and find a mother lode of ugly racist comments.

Now I have to go and wash my brain out with bleach.

Hey gang. I'm arriving late once again. Been busy uploading last night's show. All I can say about this email is that the sender is a fucking asshole. Hopefully every receiver of it told him directly to his face how disgusting he is. I fucking hate, hate, hate, racism. And that, my friends, is my official "Christian" response. This shit is beyond racism. It's the same mindset that dehumanizes anyone different. And we already know what that leads to according to the last century's track record. What a piece of shit that would feel free to send this bile.

Most of the time when I express outrage over racist, Obama e-mails I recieve, I get a version of "Obama Lover" replies. I suspect they might use another word instead of Obama in private.

Speaking of racism, I'm reposting this.

Next week, York University will once again open its halls and classrooms to “Israel Apartheid Week,” so-called. This year as every year, militants and activists will use the taxpayer-funded facilities of York to vilify the Jewish state.

Well, that’s free speech, isn’t it? Everybody gets to express his or her point of view, no matter how obnoxious, right?

No, not right. Not at York. At York, speech is free — better than free, subsidized– for anti-Israel haters. But for those who would defend Israel, York sets very different rules.

In advance of York’s annual hate-Israel week, the campus group Christians United for Israel applied to use university space to host a program of pro-Israel speakers.

The university replied that this program could only proceed on certain conditions.

It insisted on heavy security, including both campus and Toronto police — all of those costs to be paid by the program organizers. The organizers would also have to provide an advance list of all program attendees and advance summaries of all the speeches. No advertising for the program would be permitted — not on the York campus, not on any of the other campuses participating by remote video.

These are radically different and much harsher terms than anything required from the hate-Israel program. The hate-Israel program is not required to pay for its own security. It is free to advertise. Its speakers are not pre-screened by the university

.

Oh, my.
Don't even get me started on this.
It wasn't just beachfront property owned by the wealthy in Biloxi that was wiped out.

It was also the neighborhoods where the hotel waiters and maids and staff live. Not exactly your upper socio-economic folks.

I stood on a balcony and smoked cigarettes with the people working for the La. Recovery Authority, which had rules and requirements that were so confusing and detailed beyond belief, that the money could not even be disbursed until a full year or more AFTER Mississippi had gotten recovery money to it's citizens.

Lower 9th ward was, is, a unique neighborhood and its loss is an awful thing. But our State and the NOLA city gov't couldn't quit squabbling about things long enough to actually, you know, get something done.

I've learned to my great dismay that there is absolutely nothing disgusting and vile enough that there won't be people who make excuses for it.

Odd, isn't it? Oliphant gigs Israel for perhaps (in his opinion) overreaching, and he's a raving anti-Semite. A right wing blogger posts a comparison of the First Lady with a chimp (who Black folk were said no better to be in this country for 200 years) and he gets defenders.

There is middle ground, here, if everyone would take a deep breath. The majority of humans can come to some reasonable consensus, if they are just given the facts unfiltered by spin. Sadly, most people won't do the heavy lifting required to get the facts. It's a problem on both sides, but at least the "Mainstream Media" doesn't outright lie.

Immortal Moments in American Literature, Episode LIV:

From "God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater," by Kurt Vonnegut:

[Eliot Rosewater, to his father, Sen. Rosewater] "I think it's terrible the way people don't share things in this country. The least a government could do, it seems to me, is to divide things up fairly among the babies. There's plenty for everybody in this country, if we'd only share more."

[Sen. Rosewater] "And just what do you think that would do to incentive?"

"You mean fright about not getting enough to eat, about not being able to pay the doctor, about not being able to give your family nice clothes, a safe, cheerful, comfortable place to live, a decent education, and a few good times? You mean shame about not knowing where the Money River is?"

"The what?"

"The Money River, where the wealth of the nation flows. We were born on the banks of it. We can slurp from that mighty river to our hearts' content. And we even take slurping lessons, so we can slurp more efficiently."

"Slurping lessons?"

"From lawyers! From tax consultants! We're born close enough to the river to drown ourselves and the next ten generations in wealth, simply using dippers and buckets. But we still hire the experts to teach us the use of aqueducts, dams, reservoirs, siphons, bucket brigades, and the Archimedes' screw. And our teachers in turn become rich, and their children become buyers of lessons in slurping."

"It's still possible for an American to make a fortune on his own."

"Sure—provided somebody tells him when he's young enough that there is a Money River, that there's nothing fair about it, that he had damn well better forget about hard work and the merit system and honesty and all that crap, and get to where the river is. 'Go where the rich and powerful are,' I'd tell him, 'and learn their ways. They can be flattered and they can be scared. Please them enormously or scare them enormously, and one moonless night they will put their fingers to their lips, warning you not to make a sound. And they will lead you through the dark to the widest, deepest river of wealth ever known to man. You'll be shown your place on the riverbank, and handed a bucket all your own. Slurp as much as you want, but try to keep the racket of your slurping down. A poor man might hear.'"

Pulling one cartoon out of his ouevre and calling him a raving anti-Semite is childish. He has been an equal opportunity shit slinger, hitting the Palis *at least* as much as the Israelis, if not more. But to claim that the Israelis are as pure as the driven snow is also childish. They're human. They fuck up, too. But their fuck-ups are generally more palatable to me because Israelis aren't terrorists. They really are trying to defend their homeland as best they can.

Major Props.

That doesn't mean they can't be called on the carpet for their fuck ups. And that doesn't make any one who talks about it an anti-semite.

An Example:

Very well written. It should be taken with a grain of salt, but Vonnegut did very well with that exchange.

Not to leap to the defense of DK, but knowing clams I'm willing to bet that just another one of their mutant astroturfing attempts. It's common practice for them to attempt to associate their bullshit with unaffiliated sources that have a large audience.

(ha, it took about 12 minutes to say that, because Scientology is one of my very few Serious Business Buttons)

welcome sanity. Scientologists are crazy-to-go with a side of fries.

One of the two of us is severely misreading that link. I'm reading an impassioned defense of Scientology.

re: #127 marjoriemoon

There was an Aunt Jemima one too. I never saw any of those until after the Obama election, however, when they were presented as past examples.

"Aunt Jemima" and "Uncle Ben" are descriptions used by black folks to describe blacks who are sellouts to white people. It's not necessarily racist, it depends on the context.

The Condi Rice cartoon? That was a parrot, not a monkey.

Alas, just a "THE LEFT DID IT TOO" defense of an overflowing cauldron right-wing racism.

also, I know no one is reading this now, but I think's it absolutely fucking ignorant that people would suggest some overzealous left-wing nannying of minorities is "just as bad" as white robes, burning crosses on lawns & lynchings. Are you fucking kidding me???

Vambo, I agree.
