Heh, hadn't seen this (apologies if it's been mentioned here). Metzger over at Dangerous Minds even did a little post about the immediate influx of douchebags over there:
I refer you to the comments thread of this week’s Dangerous Minds interview with Charles Johnson, of Little Green Footballs. This afternoon Charles linked to the interview from his popular blog and within a matter of minutes people were posting about the interview both there and here. Some pro, some con (I get compared to Sean Hannity for instance!), but some just nasty and fairly pointless, such as one item (since deleted by us and not at the request of Charles, either) which managed to slip in both a homophobic epithet and a not-so-veiled death threat!
Charming.
As Charles replied “Welcome to my world! These are exactly the people I was talking about in the interview.” I sent him the IP address and in a matter of minutes he tracked the guy down and found several instances of his email address posted online elsewhere.
I remembered CJ posting about that guy and his IP; didn't realise Metzger had also posted about it.

Just failing to dig up dirt on the Administration was a waste of viewers time. What Beck saw was a mirror image of himself in Massa...someone competing with him on how to be a victim. OT - (it's getting better...)
Unemployment rises in 30 states in January
The data is somewhat better than December, when 43 states reported higher unemployment rates, but worse than November, when rates fell in most states.
Still, five states reported record-high joblessness in January: California, at 12.5 percent; South Carolina, 12.6 percent; Florida, 11.9 percent; North Carolina, 11.1 percent; and Georgia, 10.4 percent.
Michigan's unemployment rate is still the nation's highest, at 14.3 percent, followed by Nevada, with 13 percent and Rhode Island at 12.7 percent. South Carolina and California round out the top five.
There were some signs of job creation. Thirty-one states added jobs in January, up from only 11 in the previous month. But the job gains weren't enough, in many cases, to lower the unemployment rate.
For example, California reported the largest job gains, of 32,500, though its unemployment rate also rose. Illinois, New York, Washington state and Minnesota reported the next highest totals of new jobs.

(cnet) Drudge Report accused of serving malware, again
For the second time in less than six months, visitors to the Drudge Report say they got malware in addition to the Web site's usual sensational headlines.Matt Drudge denied that his site was infecting visitors, however it's likely that the malware is coming from ads delivered by a third-party ad network and not the site itself.
...
A spokesperson for the Senate committee said officials were looking at Drudge Report and WhitePages.com as possible sources of the malware that affected Senate computers."The Senate Help Desk, in discussing a recent increase in the number of virus infections in Senate computers, mentioned that it might be associated with pop-up ads appearing through certain websites, and they cited DrudgeReport.com and WhitePages.com as possible examples," the spokesperson said in an e-mail statement. "Our non-partisan systems administrator notified both Majority and Minority staff that this issue had been brought to her attention. It is still not exactly clear where the increase in viruses is coming from, and staff have been advised to be cautious with outside Web sites at all times."
From Fox's writeup on the story:
"I suspect somebody was trying to make it look as if there's a virus there to discourage people from using Drudge," Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., told CNSNews.com. "Then, somehow, I guess someone in the Capitol got a hold of it and said, yes, we are advising you not to use it."Inhofe said Drudge is a "great source" and encouraged people to continue using it.
His words of assurance came after the Senate Sergeant-at-Arms, the chamber's official gatekeeper, said the Drudge Report, a news aggregator, and whitepages.com, a telephone directory site, "are responsible for the many viruses popping up throughout the Senate," according to an e-mail from the Environment and Public Works Committee obtained by FoxNews.com.
Another e-mail from a separate office warned that staffers who had visited the Drudge Report or White Pages had experienced viruses on their PCs.
"Please avoid using these sites until the Senate resolves this issue," the e-mail read. "The Senate has been swamped the last couples (sic) days with this issue."
But Inhofe suggested political motivations were behind the e-mails.
"The liberals, the extremists, they don't want the information that [Matt Drudge] has because he's a man of truth and most of them don't want the truth," Inhofe said.
Matt Drudge, "man of truth." :P

Ah, Limbaugh backtracks. Says he only meant he'd go to Costa Rica for medical treatment, not actually move there.
HA! from your link:
What is ironic about Limbaugh — who has ranted about the dangers of “socialized health care” for years — seeking health care in Costa Rica is that the country has a hybrid government-private health care system that provides comprehensive universal coverage to all of its residents. The government owns several major public hospitals and operates small clinics in almost every community. Workers are required to contribute 15% of their salaries to health insurance and the unemployed “obtain public funding for all health services, including prescription drugs.” Most Costa Ricans obtain their health care through a public plan called the Caja — similar to our Medicare or the proposed public option.
Costa Rica’s system of universal coverage is so effective that it actually ranks one slot above the United States in the World Health Organization’s ranking of health systems worldwide while actually spending less per capita than we do. Does Limbaugh’s threat to seek health care on Costa Rica mean that the radio host is endorsing a similar system for the United States?

More Census fear-mongering, from everyone's least favourite Teletubby, Blah-Blah:
Beck: The Census Is The Government’s Attempt To ‘Increase Slavery’
He took particular issue with a question asking for the respondent’s race. But after Beck’s co-host pointed out that the question has been part of the Census since the Founding Fathers’ time, Beck twisted the three-fifths law to claim that the Census is now breeding slavery:
BECK: Why were they asking the race question, you said when, in 1790? … Right, they want to know, do you count as three-fifths? Do you count at all? So, you have to know how many slaves did you have? People find that offensive today because the idea was, if we’re going to count, we want to know how many are here for services etc. etc. and slaves would get less. Well that’s not right. One. One. ‘I’m not three-fifths, I’m one. Whites are not worth than me.’ Now reverse it, why are they asking this question today?
CO-HOST: Because minorities are worth more than whites.
BECK: Exactly right. So you will get more dollars if you are a minority. So you are worth more as a monitory. Well there is no difference. The reason you don’t answer the race question is because one, everyone counts as one. All men are created equal. If you were offended back in 1790 about slavery and that everyone should count the same, do not answer the race question. How dare you. How dare you. At least in 1790, they were doing it to slow the South down on slavery. To try to stop it as much as they can. Today they are asking the race question to try to increase slavery. Your dependence on the master in Washington. No way, don’t answer that question.
[...]
So does Beck think the Census has a “deep seated hatred of white people or white culture”?

Isn't the internet wonderful? If it wasn't for the internet, he probably would have keyed your car months ago...then again, he would have been happy after that and gone about his merry way.
BTW, I had a run-in with an old-school stalker a few years back. He slashed the tires on my car...three times. Always two tires, so I couldn't just put on a spare and had to call a tow-truck. 250 bucks a tire, too. Guy was a major league asshole. He'd panicked at an intersection and laid his Harley down after coming to a full stop 20 feet from me. Specifically Mark Krikorian on the 8th: (no link)
Instead, we should answer Question 9 by checking the last option — "Some other race" — and writing in "American." It's a truthful answer but at the same time is a way for ordinary citizens to express their rejection of unconstitutional racial classification schemes. In fact, "American" was the plurality ancestry selection for respondents to the 2000 census in four states and several hundred counties.
So remember: Question 9 — "Some other race" — "American". Pass it on.

The US Census bureau can easily handle this, however. If someone writes in "American", they can pretty safely assume that they mean 'White/Caucasian' and they can also disregard any claims of college education (attendance, maybe, but education, no).

The vast majority of these idiots are white right wingers. So by refusing to fill out the census form correctly, they're ensuring that they will be further marginalized.

An article on Jerry Falwell's Liberty University biology students' yearly fieldtrip to the Natural History Museum:
[Link: au.news.yahoo.com...]
They plan to become doctors, researchers and professors, but these students from Liberty University, an evangelical school, also believe God created the Earth in a week, some 6,000 years ago. Each year, a group of biology students at the Christian university based in Lynchburg, Virginia, travels to the Natural History Museum in Washington to learn about a theory they dismiss as incorrect -- Darwin's theory of evolution.
...
Lauren Dunn, 19, a second-year biology student, was unimpressed."210 million years, that's arbitrary. They put that time to make up for what they don't know," she said.
Nathan Hubbard, a 20-year-old from Michigan and a first-year biology major who plans to become a doctor, regarded the model with suspicion.
"There is no scientific, biological genetic way that this, this rat, could become you," he said, seemingly scandalized by the proposition.
Liberty University is the most prominent evangelical university in the United States, with some 12,000 students who adhere to strict rules and regulations regarding moral conduct.
Its biology curriculum includes a course on "Young Earth Creationism", which juxtaposes Charles Darwin's "Origin of the Species" with the Book of Genesis.
"In order to be the best creationist, you have to be the best evolutionist you can be," said Marcus Ross, who teaches paleontology and says of Adam and Eve: "I feel they were real people, they were the first people."
Here's a video of the trip with student and professor reactions:

I've excerpted a few:
"Fairytale.""God created Giraffe's as a kind of animal and they had those genes already there."

The Texas Education Agency goes after Fox News TX textbook rabble-rousing:
[Link: www.tea.state.tx.us...]
Fox inaccurately reporting State Board of Education actionThe Fox Network in recent days has repeatedly broadcast highly inaccurate information about the State Board of Education’s efforts to adopt the new social studies curriculum standards.
Here are the facts. The direct quotes come from the March 10 broadcast of Fox & Friends.
The press release then goes on to dispute a number of Fox & Freinds scare quotes, responding that Christmas, Independence Day, and Veterans Day will, in fact, still be in the standards, as will Abe Lincoln, George Washington and U.S. history prior to 1877.
In related news, the Common Core State Standards Initiative has released their proposed national education standards today:
[Link: www.nytimes.com...]
Culminating a year’s work, a panel of educators convened by the nation’s governors and state school superintendents released a set of proposed common academic standards on Wednesday. The standards, posted on the panel’s web site, lay out the panel’s vision of what American public school students should learn in math and English, year by year, from kindergarten to high school graduation.Forty-eight states cooperated in producing the proposed standards, which amount to a new road map for American public education. If a majority of states were to adopt them over the next few months, which experts said was a growing possibility, the new standards would replace the nation’s motley current checkerboard of locally written standards, which vary greatly in content and sophistication. And adoption of the new standards would set off a vast new effort to rewrite textbooks and standardized tests.
...
The National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers set the common-standards initiative in motion early last year, convening panels of English and math experts from the College Board, A.C.T., and from Achieve, Inc., a group that has been working with states for years to upgrade their high school graduation standards.Alaska and Texas are the only states not participating in the standards-writing effort. In keeping his state out of the movement, Gov. Rick Perry argued that only Texans should decide what children there learn.
The Obama Administration quickly endorsed the effort. Under the Department of Education’s Race to the Top initiative, in which states are competing for a share of $4 billion in school improvement money, states can earn 40 points of the possible 500 for participating in the common effort and adopting the new standards.

An interesting not BTW to all those who wish to educate me on my debating tactics when I get cranky. It is not that I fail to see that perception of the speaker is frequently more important than the facts (s)he presents. It is rather a protest against such stupidity.
At the end of the day calling stupid, stupid - when backed by facts, has a much stronger effect than trying to reason with those who reject reason.
If enough people did this, it would no longer be cool for weak betas to join whatever mob.
I gently disagree. I would posit that it makes it much harder for someone to be open to new facts and return to admit they were wrong. Such admissions are hard enough, and only become harder in the face of tactics like the ones you describe.

I am surprised they left out Judges chapter 19.
Yeah that is for sure.
This is one place where I just have to shake my head. When people get up in arms about sexuality in the Bible and think that the repressive views of some sets represent the sum total of biblical thought on the matter. There is a difference between taking the view that sexuality should be something important and that it should be with someone you love and are married to - but otherwise a blessing and a really good thing! - and taking the stance of "please ban my genitals."
For the record, the original view of sex in the bible is that it is a blessing, that you are not unholy for doing it (with your spouse), that it exists for her pleasure, not to make babies, and if you are a guy, it is assumed you will enjoy yourself in general, ( that is actually to make certain you take care of her).

Call it carrot and stick. There have to be limits on both sides.
I am not advocating just coming out and swinging unless the person is saying the absolute worst things. I am advocating not being afraid to call things as they are.
Let's put it like this. Self delusion is strong. It is very strong.
If you are denying plain facts over and over then it is a mtter of psychology to get through it. When you take a soft stance you enable the self deception.
If someone were honestly called a drinker and honestly told they have a serious problem when they do (and sorry a case of beer every evening is not a few drinks) you might just save their lives. Saying it is possibly too many drinks or that maybe they should watch it only invites that "they are fine."
If someone were honestly and without malice described as fat -or obese rather than burly or curvy or a few pounds over (sorry, 50-75 lbs over is not a few pounds) then you do them the favor of letting them not fool themselves and then maybe they will take some control over their lives.
The same goes with politics.
Consider the prevalent racism in the GOP that runs from the top to the bottom. Yes you can whine all you want that not all Republicans are racist, but that deflects from how much of the leadership and rank and file most vociferously is.

From today's press release stream:
Students' perceptions of Earth's age influence acceptance of human evolution, says U of Minn. study
High school and college students who understand the geological age of the Earth (4.5 billion years) are much more likely to understand and accept human evolution, according to a University of Minnesota study published in the March issue of the journal Evolution.
The finding could give educators a new strategy for teaching evolution, since the Earth's age is typically covered in physical rather than biological science classes.
Researchers Sehoya Cotner and Randy Moore, professors in College of Biological Sciences, and D. Christopher Brooks, of the university's Office of Information Technology, surveyed 400 students enrolled in several sections of a University of Minnesota introductory biology course for non-majors.
[...]
Through this and previous surveys, Cotner and her colleagues have learned that 2 percent of students are taught creationism only, 22 percent are taught evolution and creationism, 14 are taught neither and 62 percent evolution only.
"In other words, about one in four high school biology teachers in the upper Midwest are giving students the impression that creationism is a viable explanation for the origins of life on Earth," Cotner says. "That's just not acceptable. The Constitution prohibits teaching creationism in schools."
[...]

An article on Jerry Falwell's Liberty University biology students' yearly fieldtrip to the Natural History Museum:
[Link: au.news.yahoo.com...](h/t rightwingwatch)
Marcus Ross, the young-earth creationist instructor quoted in the article, is a legitimately degreed paleontologist. His dissertation at the University of Rhode Island "was on tracking the diversity, biostratigraphy, and extinction of mosasaurs, an extinct group of marine reptiles whose remains are found in Late Cretaceous period (100–65 Ma) deposits around the world."
This only means he is willfully lying if he really "says carbon-dating techniques that have been used to suggest the Earth is in fact billions of years old are simply not reliable." He would know, of course, that RC dating is used only for organic material of recent geological origin and not for dating rocks in the billions, or even millions, of years.

Oh my god, this story gets weirder and weirder!
From your link:
According to Peter Clarke, a Navy shipmate, Massa was notorious for making unwanted advances toward subordinates. He tells the story of his friend Stuart Borsch, with whom Massa shared a hotel room while on leave during the first Gulf War. "Stuart's at the edge of the bed," Clarke says Borsch told him at the time, "and [Massa] starts massaging him. Massa said, 'You'll have to get one of my special massages.' He called them 'Massa Massages.'" Ron Moss, a Navy shipmate and Borsch's roommate, confirmed that Borsch told him this story at the time.Borsch, now a history professor at Assumption College in Worcester, Massachusetts, didn't addresss that specific incident, but did confirm to me in an email that he was groped by Massa: "In 1990, aboard the U.S.S. Jouett, I was awakened when a senior officer, Lt. Commander Massa, seemed to be groping me. (I was a lieutenant at the time.) I believe he may have been drinking. I shouted at him and he left. I mentioned the incident to several other officers. I did not officially report it."
Clarke says that Massa's roommate, Tom Maxfield, was also assaulted. "Tom lived on upper bunk," Clarke say. "When you're on ship, you're almost exhausted 24-7. So a lot of times you sleep with your uniform on. Tom and Massa shared a stateroom together. Massa climbed up on the top of his bunk, which is hard to do--you never crawl up on somebody else's bunk. He wakes up to Massa undoing his pants trying to snorkel him." Ron Moss also confirmed hearing this story from Maxfield. Maxfield did return calls and messages left for him--I'll update if he does.

[Massa's roommate in the Navy] wakes up to Massa undoing his pants trying to snorkel him."
Beck, thank you for trying so hard to ally yourself with *anyone* who you think will help you. I am so glad you "wasted" an hour of your show trying desperately to find something that would hurt Obama; instead you gave air time to this walking comedy gem.
So Massa joined the Navy for the seamen?

Ohhh yes, that is why I chose the electric tree and the cold tree rather than macking out fire.

I capped that on the blood mage in the alienage and well, that was that.

Used to be an old (Brit) joke about that, involving Master Bates, Seaman Staines, and Roger the Cabin Boy....

And bloody glorious.
There are some really nice combos in the rune tree too, but I have yet to experiment with them.

Well done.
I just flashed back to a Beavis and Butthead (sigh) episode. One of them was talking about his Dad, and said (something like): "My dad was in the Navy. He was a.... [great pause] seamen." That's been making me giggle for over a decade now.

I'll have to try that. I've never really used bees.
It is really an over powered spell for you your munchkin pleasure.
The bees are a very potent DOT and after they kill your target, they move on to something else.

I haven't played for a while but the last play through I started is a no mage in the party deal. It's rogue, rogue, rouge, tank. Except when you have to have Wynn in party of course.

If you have enough health potions I could see that being very viable, particularly if you like to set a dozen or so traps first. Must have sucked when taking on Flemeth though.

I haven't got to Flemeth yet on that play through. It probably would suck but you don't have to fight her to finish the quest so if it doesn't work I won't.
And yeah, lots of health potion needed and more of a focus on sneak and draw attacks, as well as archery to cut down any pack before you take them on.

Singularity is nearly impossible to overrate. It curves better than a major league fastball when you aim it right.

It is the only way I know to really slow down a heavy and it is very very tactically useful as a trap. All in all though I don't know if shockwave or slam is the most satisfying to see in action.

So true. That's why I like Dragon Age so much, it's like playing in tv show or movie with enough choice that you can shape it how you want. Then you can go back, watch again, change the plot a bit and even change the ending.

BTW, speaking of Alistair and DAO, my GF played through and romanced him as an elf mage with the goal of being Queen ...

LOL. I know that feeling! That's when I go back to the previous save.
The first character I played romanced him and I was going for the option where he becomes king but still has fling with you on the side. It's supposed to be an option but I couldn't make it happen. I think I probably swore a lot too. "Friends, you want to just be freakin friends after all this crap!"
Next play through I killed him off at the end.

So, not surprisingly, I tend to mack out light side or paragon.

I always have to do dark/renegade the second time...the curiosity helps overcome my natural instincts.
Although in ME2 it helped that the scars and eyes of your character get fantastic if you renegade enough...little extra motivation to be a complete dick helped see me through....

Are you getting it for PC? If so there's lots of new player made content that's coming out all the time. Plus there's new official game content addons and an expansion coming out next week. No, i converted to Xbox360 years ago.
For me, (bigger screen + price + hardware that doesn't need to be updated) > (extra content + easier customization + precision of mouse).
But that equation is different for everyone...when i wasn't a dad and spent more time playing (and PC was much farther advanced than the best consoles), I played PC.

An interesting sidenote about the stalkers posting at Richard Metzger's site.
There was a certain LGF user who is now banned after a really nasty freak-out, who also liked to use the unusual word "myrmidon." He posted quite a few comments containing this word.
Bs monkey is a frothing nutcase on an exclusive diet of frooty loops. Last time I saw him at the stalker site, he was ranting about the 'impossibility' of buying "non-whorish underwear" - for either makes or females - before launching a general rant about the Sodom and Gomorrah like fall of the modern world.
