Yet another WTF? moment from blabber mouth Rush. Anyone else would get crucified in the press for that, but not King Rush, the media is scared of his lunatic fanbase apparently.

I think it's the wealth at his disposal that some might fear. Not just his own, but that of others that might kick in a the slightest hint of a lawsuit.
As far as anyone else being crucified, Imus' single comment proves your point.
Alright. I'm going to leave you for awhile with this rather tasteless but very funny video about George Washington. If you're offended by, well, offensive things, don't watch it.
Nyuck Nyuck Nyuck... But that wasn't racist... No not at all, that was satire!
And No Rush is not a major leader of the GOP and he does not have a massive following of GOP listeners and for sure this is not more evidence that the GOP is racist.
All those GOP listeners of his get the satire. How could anyone say that they have to be racist to find that stuff funny?
Next time someone tells me that the GOP isn't racist, I shall bite them.
By the way, today Mitt Romney got crossed off my very short list of potentially reasonable GOP politicians.
I'm completely finished with the Republican Party. Please don't call me a conservative any more -- the term has been hopelessly fouled by the religious right, and not a single GOP politician has the guts to stand up and say no to these throwbacks.

While we are at it, America is a Christian nation... All that stuff about separation of church and state meant they did not want America to become papist! Yeah that's it...
And of course we need not confuse the kids with going into that until they are old enough to accept that not everyone loves Jesus as much as real Americans do, without being led astray.
And remember folks... this is satire and Rush is not racist!

Ludwig, you know I'm on the level with you regarding AGW, so the following is simply something I'm bring to your attention for analysis:
Mitt's been working the right wing real hard lately, but if the latest Iowa polls of GOP voters mean anything, it's not helping him there (they still like Huck.)
It's not that Romney did anything special today -- he praised Glenn Beck on some show, but that's the least offensive thing he's done recently. He's been appearing at every extreme religious right conference and shamelessly pandering to the groups that would like to see him burned at the stake for being a Mormon. He's a dyed in the wool phony.

he's a dyed in the wool politician too...another party good old boy hustling votes
I'm guessing it's Tea Party pandering: Mitt Romney: Tea Party movement is great as long as they vote Republican
Nobody's willing to advance a realistic and practical conservative version of the Republican party. Appeasing the Tea Party nuts is a dead end. Even if you get them to vote Republican they're going to be really pissed when elected officials have to deal with the real world. There's no way to win with them on board.
I know I shouldn't, but I've been taking a certain pleasure in the fact this person is white and blonde. I'm going to be linking to her picture every time someone calls for "religious" profiling at airports.
And remember folks... this is satire and Rush is not racist!
I'm not the biggest Rush fan, but I severely enjoy "2112". I've heard from some people who were directly involved that Rush (the band AND crew) very directly treated the then-newbie Joan Jett's band like shit when JJ opened for Rush back a million years ago, but I still never thought of Rush as racists. Can Canadians be racist?

I'm afraid Rudy falls into the same category. Not much left in the Republican party for me.

A perfect case in point.
Romney did an interview with Newsmax - the so-called media site that published an article calling for a military coup in the US, and has columnists like Pamela Geller and other conspiracy theorizing insane people.
There don't seem to be any consequences at all for this kind of crap in American politics.
You're crossing the line into obsession with this issue. Maybe I should change my avatar to the Piss Christ, so sensitive folks can cry offense and pound on me for a while.
Maybe you should. I'd like to see how long that would last.

Slightly off topic, but the wife made me sit down and watch "The Proposal" the other week. One of (many) grating moments in the film was when the "heroine" exclaims "It's not like I'm an immigrant. I'm...Canadian!" The way it was delievered was obviously a set up for a laugh, but I couldn't hear it over the grinding of my teeth. That's one of at least three moments in the film that absolutely reeks of white privilege. It's the same privilege that evey other numbnut who is "brave" or "witty" enough to be "politically incorrect" depends on to excuse their bigotry.
You're crossing the line into obsession with this issue. Maybe I should change my avatar to the Piss Christ, so sensitive folks can cry offense and pound on me for a while.
False equivalence, Andres Serrano's photograph is actually an original and beautiful piece of work, not a poorly executed rip-off of two beautiful constructs designed to enlighten humanity (Watterson's Calvin and ﷲ )
But by all means, continue to defend the hypocritical.

That was also the premise in the movie "Knocked Up" in which the girl has a one night stand with an unemployed, drunk illegal alien. But the illegal alien part is supposed to be funny because he's Canadian.

Sorry, downding for supporting that asshole Serrano. His work was intended to offend, and in my mind any technical merits of the photos are outweighed by the asshole factor of it.
So, what do the jihadists have in common with each other, then?
Nothing that can be picked up by a cursory visual inspection. And since people don't list their religion on their travel documents (and nor should they), cases like this one make it impossible to argue that some demographics of travellers can be reliably pulled aside for extra screening, while the "low risk" demographics can be allowed to go about their businesss without being "inconvenienced".
Or to put it another way: Yes, you need to screen the white folks too.
Yes, you could. I hate religious bigotry to the marrow of my bones.
Art/Commentary/Bigotry. All the same? A Piss Allah or Piss Christ is not bigotry in my book. They're just images that cause overly sensitive zealots to wet themselves.
Hey, at least you're not threatening to kill anyone over it. That puts you miles above a certain group of easily offended crybabies.
Sorry, downding for supporting that asshole Serrano. His work was intended to offend, and in my mind any technical merits of the photos are outweighed by the asshole factor of it.
Intending to offend doesn't mean it isn't art, though! Manet intended to offend. The Fauves intended to offend. Francis Bacon intended to offend.
We must not indulge in unfavourable views of mankind, since by doing it we make bad men believe that they are no worse than others, and we teach the good that they are good in vain.
-- Walter Savage Landor, 1820s

True, but I still don't like it. I don't like people who set out to be offensive. Whatever their skills, such people tend to be assholes and more than one such person has derived sadistic pleasure from tormenting me personally. That asshole aspect is something I cannot get past.

An attention queen with talent is still an attention queen.
""The problem is not in Muslims," he continues. "The problem is with their God."
Wow crazy. When a guy starts saying things like this, he's in full-on mumbo-jumbo nutbag land. Or maybe heady with the buzz of the newly converted, leaping from one tribe to another, to point fingers at the old tribe. Happens all the time, it's human nature.
That was also the premise in the movie "Knocked Up" in which the girl has a one night stand with an unemployed, drunk illegal alien. But the illegal alien part is supposed to be funny because he's Canadian.
My husband used to work with an illegal alien from Canada. They found out he was in the country illegally when HR called up to ask that he give them his Social Security # again, because the last one indicated that he was dead.

While I am a technical photographer, the artwork itself is successful because it generated a strong reaction based on nothing but Andres' word that the plastic crucifix in the photograph was suspended in his own urine. The shot itself is quite pleasing if you either don't read or can move past the title. On the other hand Mandy's avatar is a crude imitation of another crude imitation. Almost a non-thought. Sure, it gets a reaction, but it is neither clever nor original. Honestly it comes off as a cheap and poorly executed form of self-mockery, considering her own hypocritical rabid intolerance of perceived anti-christian slights. Cato thinks it brings the blog down, I disagree but still think it's both lame and pretty hilarious coming from her.
Yousef is turning into a wingnut. It's the same god you worship, Mandy. Fuck.
From a strictly secular perspective:
The ancient god of the Jews, later to be adopted/stolen by the heretical sect known as Christians, was a mountain god I think. Whereas the single deity acknowledged by the Muslims was supposedly a moon god. Now, I vaguely recall reading that the mountain god was ancestral but I don't know if the same can be said of the moon god. So, in that regard, the two deities are different. If we're gonna split hairs.

Sometimes, offensive art can be provocative. Of thought or discussion. I don't have a problem with most of it.
This is one of those cases where I would not want my views to become law. Too many run-ins with the assholes side of such people has left me unable to look past that side. Sorry, but this is one of the very few topics where my wounds have closed my mind.
Yousef is turning into a wingnut. It's the same god you worship, Mandy. Fuck.
Gotta go with that, although I can see how if you were raised by Hamas you might come out of it with a bit of a grudge against Islam.
It's no more genuinely insightful, though, than the kid who's beaten by fundamentalist parents, and decides Christianity is the source of all that is evil.
I'm glad he has a faith that's a comfort to him though. This guy lives out on the edge where the cold wind blows. He needs God if anyone does.

I happen to like this place, and feel protective of LGF's image. When I see something that could be used to tar it with the bigot brush, I make an issue of it.
But, just for you, Sleeping Rhinoceros, I recuse myself from further comment on the subject. For tonight.

He just took off. For New Orleans, he said.
Yes, they can "pass" more easily than Mexicans, and they take jobs that Americans want to do.
True, but I still don't like it. I don't like people who set out to be offensive. Whatever their skills, such people tend to be assholes and more than one such person has derived sadistic pleasure from tormenting me personally. That asshole aspect is something I cannot get past.
Well, there's people who want to do NOTHING but offend with their work, and there's people whose art offends intentionally as a matter of course, but it's because they feel the message is valid and being offensive is sort of the thing they have to do to get it out there. Manet didn't JUST want to offend. Bacon didn't JUST want to offend. They wanted to upset convention. And that requires offending people. But they had things they had to say that they felt passionately about it, and they intended to scandalize and be controversial. But it's not the only note they played. Banksy offends and vandalizes, but he also makes people think about their world.
Mr. Yousef tells me that he was horrified by the pointless violence unleashed by politicians willing to climb "on the shoulders of poor, religious people."
For me one of the worst examples of this was Limbaugh's dismissal of Colin Powell's endorsement of Obama. "It's all about race" was Limbaugh's "insight."
Not only was he saying that Powell had no legitimate reason to support O; he also tries to turn America's greatest living war hero into a simple-minded "black racist" who reflexively supports his own.
I simply don't know what I'm looking at here. She makes no sense to me.
Someone who has found purpose and focus in the call of The Jihad. Like all jihadists, she has her reasons. But they are the jihadists' reasons, not ours.
Yousef is turning into a wingnut. It's the same god you worship, Mandy. Fuck.
Mandy doesn't worship God, she worships the image of herself worshipping God, of whom she has only the paltriest conception. And not an immaculate one.

El, Elohim, Allah, basically this guy's job title is just "God", and we're all gonna have to deal with it.
Well, there's people who want to do NOTHING but offend with their work, and there's people whose art offends intentionally as a matter of course, but it's because they feel the message is valid and being offensive is sort of the thing they have to do to get it out thereeasier and quicker than actually working to develop any actual frickin' talent and craft. FTFY. Hope those oh-so-edgy pants droppers are eating well on their NEA grants during this recession.
I don't have one of those either. I am no Luddite, but I keep my internet footprint very tiny, for obvious reasons.
/like, I can't remember that many nics and passwords
Heh. I set up a home netwok, and had it encrypted and password protected. All the computers/devices we had were set to log in automatically. Then last week we bought a new laptop, and I couldn't for the life of me remember the password. I spent a whole weekend typing in every combination I might have used before I finally got it.
El, Elohim, Allah, basically this guy's job title is just "God", and we're all gonna have to deal with it.
I try to ignore the whole silly notion, but when somebody tries to say they know the names and the designs and the purpose of their god, I have me a good old chuckle...the whole idea is presumption, so why bother bickering over names?
I happen to like this place, and feel protective of LGF's image. When I see something that could be used to tar it with the bigot brush, I make an issue of it.
You know as well as anyone here that only registered users could see that image, and only see it well enough to identify it if they clicked on the avatar itself.
But, just for you, Sleeping Rhinoceros, I recuse myself from further comment on the subject. For tonight.
Please, by all means, continue to bitch about it. I will continue to call it bitching when I hear a bitching.
Some generals have been war heroes. Grant served under fire, as did MacArthur.
Even if they didn't serve under fire, their actions in leading troops, formulating/executing battle plans, and saving America from Nazis, Japanese, Confederates, whatever, certainly qualify definitionally and culturally as heroic.
Mandy doesn't worship God, she worships the image of herself worshipping God, of whom she has only the paltriest conception. And not an immaculate one.
At some point we have to drop this subject. Mandy knows what her avatar represents, and does not care how offensive it is to some, so we are just spinning our wheels.

Right. We have no stalkers, socks, or infiltraitors among the registered users. Carry on.
they are not heros because they are generals, to clarify
Generals can't be heroes? Where do you come up with this?
Washington was certainly viewed as the hero of the FIRST American Revolution. And those ticker tape parades for the returning Generals at the end of WWII? I guess we'd better let today's octogenarians know that these guys they admired so much weren't really heroes.

I disagree...to me a hero is someone who disregards their own safety...possibly forfeit their own life for others...but I dilute the term once in a while myself...my mom built Liberators for three yeas but I don't consider the effort heroic
Limbaugh's MO is to make old white racists feel like they've got nothing to be ashamed of. After all, in Limbaugh's vision of America the true racists today are blacks.

/wishful thinking

Good enough. I had a horrific cold, but am basically over it.
Yourself?
I am doing well, all things considered. A long-term contract with the potential to go permanent went south in late January. Despite that I'm enjoying this break, I just hope it doesn't last too long. I am considering going back to school and am looking into radiology and sonography for possible long-term career goals.
I'm looking forward to this weekend, when I get to see my one and only nephew for his 7th birthday.

So all war heroes have to be Audie Murphy? Only the very narrowest definition of war hero would require bullets to literally be flying by your head.
You really don't find anything heroic in the actions of Patton and Ike during WWII? Or Grant and Lee during the civil war?
Regardless, my point is that Powell was the most respected military figure in America, and Limbaugh treats him like he's Al Sharpton.
Well, it seems this thread is getting dutifully complicated. All I know is that Rush is a fucking racist who knows exactly how to push the right buttons for his listeners. He knows all of the dog whistles all too well. How the hell is that complicated? And with that drive by posting, this lizard bids y'all a good night.
Right. A single cartoon avatar, used by a single Lizard, is the ultimate linchpin by which the stalkers, socks, or infiltrators will bring down LGF. Carry on.
I think if us Christians can suck up the whole cross in a jar of urine thing without blowing anyone up, Muslims should be able to contain themselves over Mandy's avatar.

certainly not...most heros never won a medal of any sort...I have a narrower definition of hero than you, therefore I see no heroism in Ike's conduct of the war...etc etc
I just got a new niece and a new baby cousin...nice news.
Yay! I like family. Last year in October at my first cousin's wedding, I got to meet my second cousin, Laura, from Texas. The last she had seen me was when I was a teenager, and of course I didn't remember her from decades ago. It was like we were old friends. We got along famously. Just warmed my heart.
Just got through watching Nightline tonight, where they had a story on the American evangelicals' influences on the anti-homosexuality laws in Uganda, including the new legislation that punishes homosexuals by death.
Included was in interview with Scott Lively, author of "The Pink Swastika", which claims that the Nazi movement in Germany was a homosexual movement.
"These are good Christians; better Christians than there are here in the states," says Lively. "They care about each other. And I think the reason they're pushing so hard on this law is that they don't want to see what happened to our country happen over there."
He told the conference's audience, made up of teachers, social workers, and politicians that "even though the majority of homosexuals are not oriented towards young people, there's a significant number who are. And when they see a child from a broken home, it's like they have a flashing neon sign over their head."
I think if us Christians can suck up the whole cross in a jar of urine thing without blowing anyone up, Muslims should be able to contain themselves over Mandy's avatar.
Sure, they should.
But that's a different ball of wax from whether it's offensive or inappropriate.

Wow, that is really bad. Instead of backing off after the publicity, US evangelicals are actually redoubling their efforts to support the murder of gay people in Uganda.
I'm in a foxhole, where, as everyone knows, there are no atheists. And the non-atheists under enemy fire will pray to Allah as easily as to "G-d" (please don't get me started on the asinine pseudo-pious custom of leaving out the "o").
I resent people pissing into my foxhole because they don't like a specific Name of God.
If you're incontinent, it's time for Depends. No one cares what name or image you may special-order to be printed inside your diapers.
certainly not...most heros never won a medal of any sort...I have a narrower definition of hero than you, therefore I see no heroism in Ike's conduct of the war...etc etc
Certainly Ike was in less immediate physical danger than those with less rank. But he carried the weight of the world on his shoulders when he was given the job of finishing the Nazis. He wasn't sitting at a desk 5000 miles away, watching things on a monitor.
What he did--defend freedom, liberate concentration camps, save western Europe from fascism, and in the process save millions of lives--sure qualifies as heroic in my book. (as well as most historians) But then I guess we all have a different "book" to play by.
Wow, that is really bad. Instead of backing off after the publicity, US evangelicals are actually redoubling their efforts to support the murder of gay people in Uganda.
Bad craziness goes worldwide.
They likely figure they can't retreat from their position without a disastrous loss of face, so they've decided to just go all out. "The Pink Swastika" and its despicable historical revisionism only being a small aspect of their villainy.

Charles, of course they would not back off. They certainly see Uganda as a righteous nation doing Gods will and passing out righteous judgement. Of course they see this as a giant success.
I understand entirely...I'm sort of in the middle trying to mind my own business
re: #210 RadicalModerate God forbid that what happened over there (Uganda), should happen here. Can't we revoke their passports or something? Preferable while they were out of the country? I'll trade 1 of them for 10 Mexican immigrants. Pleaase?

he did an excellent job for the most part, exactly what he was trained for...but wars are won in the trenches, dealing with overwhelming fear, where life and death are only an instant apart...this is where the heros are, not in a trailer behind the lines...coaches don't win games, players do...Ike didn't storm a beach or toss a grenade, or stock butt a Nazi when his clip popped out...to me there is a huge difference...he may have shit his pants, rather than fight in the face of a Japanese assault on Guadalcanal...nobody will ever know
"These are good Christians; better Christians than there are here in the states," says Lively. "They care about each other. And I think the reason they're pushing so hard on this law is that they don't want to see what happened to our country happen over there."
WTF? Not just good, but "Better Christians" do not want to see their country progress towards equality? Is that the message?
Wow, that is really bad. Instead of backing off after the publicity, US evangelicals are actually redoubling their efforts to support the murder of gay people in Uganda.

Reading thruogh the story, I'm reminded that one of the US groups that went over to Uganda was Exodus International.
Who just so happen to have some very strong ties to James Dobson's "Focus on the Family" ministry.
Speaking as an artist, when have we ever stopped to consider if something is too offensive or inappropriate to create and why wasn't I informed?
I do all the time...art doesn't catch a break because some group of critics think it should...people are entitled to whatever opinion they want...art, shmart and plenty of it is awful, tasteless and not worth a dime, famous or not
Incidentally, behemoth is not necessarily a hippo. There is a very very large debate in the commentaries as to what it was/is.
It is some sort of huge land critter.
Leviathan is some sort of huge sea critter. It may be a whale or a squid or an octopus.
Interestingly enough, there are schools of thought that consider one to be a land dragon and the other a sea dragon as well.
I studied Hebrew for a while. Even bought the e-Tanakh for my iPhone Bible reader. Then I realized how far away I was from actually being able to benefit, and asked for a refund from Olive Tree Bible Software Inc., which they promptly and cheerfully gave.
I studied Yiddish as part of my degree work in Germanic Languages and Literature, and can still manage simple Bashevis Singer stories with relative ease.
God forbid that what happened over there (Uganda), should happen here. Can't we revoke their passports or something? Preferable while they were out of the country? I'll trade 1 of them for 10 Mexican immigrants. Pleaase?
nope, they've got the right to spew their hateful garbage. A better way would be to fund books that rebut their revisionism and lay plain what a bunch of deceitful shits they really are.
that's an extraordinarily narrow definition of the term hero. dictionaries disagree with you, as do historians and a majority of Americans (who consistently rate Powell a hero, and did the same for Ike back in the day).
but, hey, nobody owns the word--define it however you wish.

I do...and I don't really care what academics think...Powell is a hero, so be it...I'm a hero too, everyone's a hero
"Wharrgarbl" is certainly an internet meme, usually involving pics of dogs trying to drink from high pressure sprinklers or hoses.
But if you search "Wharrgarbl"+"skydiving"+"gif", you get something else entirely. Do not link.
I am familair with Wharrgarbl of course... not familiar with the skydiving one... let me see... *enters "Wharrgarbl"+"skydiving"+"gif" into google*... *Click*...

Just a quote from "Gimpel the Fool":
Early on in the story, as the butt of many a joke and trick in his town, Gimpel seeks advice from the rabbi, who tells the poor man:
"It is written, better to be a fool all our days than for one hour to be evil. You are not a fool. They are the fools. For he who causes his neighbor to feel shame loses Paradise himself."
One of my prized possessions is a signed copy of one of Singer's novels.
David received a parrot for his birthday - but parrot was fully grown, surly, and full of attitude. Every other word was a swear word. Those that weren't were, rude. David tried hard to change the bird's attitude and was constantly saying polite words, playing soft music, anything that came to mind. Nothing worked. He yelled at the bird, but the bird got worse.
Finally, in a moment of desperation, after the bird had said something that caused David's girlfriend to cry, David put the parrot in the freezer. For a few moments he heard the bird cussing, kicking and screaming and then, suddenly, all was quiet. David was frightened that he might have actually hurt the bird and quickly opened the freezer door.
The parrot calmly stepped out onto David's extended arm and said, "I'm truly sorry that I offended you with my language and actions. I ask for your forgiveness. I will go to synagogue with you every week to pray and I will try to modify my behavior."
David was astounded at the bird's change in attitude.
Then the parrot asked, "May I ask what the chicken did?"
I do...and I don't really care what academics think...Powell is a hero, so be it...I'm a hero too, everyone's a hero
Regardless of whether he's a hero or "just" the most respected military figure in the country, Limbaugh treated him like he was a race-baiting Al Sharpton. Ironic as it's the very kind of thing dittoheads would usually call unpatriotic, if not downright treasonous.

Where did I link to a Robert Stacy McCain article? Seriously? I don't think I did and if I didn't it wasn't intentional. I probably linked the article without looking at the author. I don't agree with the man at all, rest assured.

Singer is one of my favorite authors. Honestly, between him and Saul Bellow, (distinctly) Jewish literature (as opposed to the author was Jewish) of the 20th century has absolutely nothing to prove.

Limbaugh means little to me...people say all kinds of crazy stuff, he's just another two bit ratings hustler...I won't ding his show, that's the best I can do
"I can't fight this. I can't fight cancer," Massa announced, in a classic stream of consciousness ramble. "I can't fight the White House. I can't fight the Democratic Party."
Beck, who is used to controlling the gravitational force of victimhood around him, kept interrupting to point out that he was a bigger target of even greater forces than Massa. "I have two unauthorized biographies coming out against me in the spring," Beck said at one point.
Where did I link to a Robert Stacy McCain article? Seriously? I don't think I did and if I didn't it wasn't intentional. I probably linked the article without looking at the author. I don't agree with the man at all, rest assured.
Fair enough. However, you had not posted much for quite some time and you've had a sudden flurry. That attracts attention. I'm not saying you've done something wrong (because I don't think you did, or at least not seriously) but you need to know that such a pattern sometimes means a sockpuppet.

And now my parrot/freezer story (Soviet vintage):
Oleg inherits a parrot from his late great-aunt. However, the bird screams, over and over, "A worker's paradise my ass!" and "Down with Brezhnev!", prompting a visit from the KGB. As they leave Oleg's apartment they tell him they will be back the next day, and they expect to see a change in the parrot's attitude.
The following day, the KGB agents revisit Oleg. As soon as they walk through the door the parrot shouts "Down with Zionism! Up with Angela Davis! Long live the heroic working class of the Soviet nation!" The agents praise Oleg for the change he has brought about, drink a glass of tea, and leave.
As soon as they're gone, Oleg sinks down into a chair and tells the parrot, "I'm glad spending the night in the freezer got it through to you what Siberia was going to be like."
Limbaugh means little to me...people say all kinds of crazy stuff, he's just another two bit ratings hustler...I won't ding his show, that's the best I can do
sure, he's a pos, and I wouldn't give a flying fuck about him either, except for his army of dittoheading teabaggers. The fat fuck shapes much of the discourse, so he can't be ignored.
Sometime in the 1970s a shipment of meat arrived in a town in the Soviet Union. The townspeople lined up at the town store to wait to be given their rations.
After about an hour, a man comes out of the store and announces, "Comrades, I'm sorry to tell you, but there isn't enough meat for everyone, so the Jews have to leave." The Jews in the line leave grumbling.
About an hour later, the man comes out of the store and announces, "Comrades, I'm sorry to tell you this, but there isn't enough meat for everyone, so anyone who is not a member of the Communist party will have to leave." More grumbling as the non-Party members depart.
Another hour goes by and the man comes out of the store again and announces, "Comrades, I'm sorry to tell you this, but there isn't enough meat for everyone in the line, so anyone who wasn't a member of the Party before 1956 has to leave." More grumbling as all the younger Party members leave. A few old people remain in the line.
Another hour goes by. It's now getting dark and it's cold. The same man comes out of the store and announces, "Comrades, I'm sorry to tell you this, but there isn't any meat. Go home."
One old lady in the line turns to her neighbor and says, "See? It's like I told you. Those evil Jews get all the breaks because they run everything!"
sure, he's a pos, and I wouldn't give a flying fuck about him either, except for his army of dittoheading teabaggers. The fat fuck shapes much of the discourse, so he can't be ignored.
I easily ignore him...I'm not on a mission to purify politics, it's a hopeless endeavor imo...if it wasn't him, it would be the next guy...the resolution to cleaning up DC is with the voters, not Limbaugh or Beck or the rest, but they are irresistable...AmIdol politics, it's unstoppable

Actually, he can be
For all his 'influence', for all his "power', for all his following (more on that in a moment) he doesn'r ofetn (if at all) get his way. Neither Bush in 2000 nor McCain in 2008 were his choices
And as far as that following. He claims 17 million listerners per week
Well ,, seeing that he is on 5 days a week , that come out to less than 3.5 million a day. He's on over 200 stations, so thats 17,500 people per station. In that many of those staions are in large cities, thats really not that much

I see. Well, rest assured I am no sockpuppet. I was actually putting off some work tonight that I was supposed to get done and for some odd reason felt like commenting on some threads to pass the time while I sat here avoiding work (reasonable enough right?).
I think it was the comment I posted where I was jesting that Charles had left the republican party a long time ago and linked to a Hot Air article that I found with Google search saying something to that very effect. I figured if anything completely vitriolic were to be found on the web it would be found at Hot Air and linked it without looking at the author. I apologize if it was a Robert Stacy McCain article (still not sure since it is now deleted) and I want everyone to know I am against this hateful man and everything the SPLC represents.

of course it's a dirty business, countering Limbaugh's BS won't change that...but doing nothing would let his propaganda stand unrefuted, and that's not really an option either
as for ignoring him, it's easy enough not to listen to his show, but his dark and wide shadow is cast everywhere, from LGF to virtually every other source for political news, left or right or whatever.

Rush influences some people because they want him too...people are addicted to TV and radio pundits...it's not Limbaugh, it's the people that need him and they are the ones that should be the target of wrath here...but that's not the way it is...I can only hurt Limbaugh by ignoring him, and then the very people that support him with their ratings count tell me he can't be ignored...go figure
I have to put this in before I head to bed. Totally off-topic, but it's covered half the blogosphere now, so hopefully someone finds it... well, cute. If this is a repeat (worse, something I already posted) my apologies, but it's too cute not to share.
Random Buddhist monk joke (or story, or parable, as you like it):
Two young Buddhist monks are walking back to their monastery after visiting a distant temple.
They come to a ford on a river, but the river is in spate and the water level is four times higher than normal.
Beside the ford sits a woman with her basket of produce for the market town on the other side. She begs the monks to help her cross.
The first monk shakes his head and wades in. The second takes the woman on his shoulders and carries her across.
The two monks proceed in silence until they come in sight of the monastery. Then the first one can no longer contain himself, and, breaking his vow of silence, expostulates:
"That was not right, what you did at the ford, brother."
The second monk replies, "Why?"
"Because of our vow of celibacy, brother. We must not have contact with women."
The second monk says, "Brother, I left her at the ford. Do you carry her still?"
First, who was Limbaugh's first choice in 2000? Not McCain certainly. Was it that walking wax figure Steve Forbes?
Second, I hope you're right about his influence. But he still has the most listeners on radio and his toxic declarations find their way into the discourse WAY too often to just write him off. I mean, a lot of Republicans in Congress are reluctant to even criticize him...can't really say that about many other media figures.

it is and it does...as for me, nobody in my family or small circle of friends pays any attention to those guys...I'm out of the AmIdol loop, but the more powerful they become, the less interested I am in voting on the national level...I see no reason to be a part of that insanity

Limbaugh's influence is not, and never has been, geared toward putting his man in the White House. Limbaugh's actually better off when Democrats are in power.

I am very dismayed by the direction we are headed...as if there are not enough problems with govt, now there is this huge trump card MSM being played by everyone, the internet included...I guess you might say I have a negative idealism...hahaha!...anyway I just don't know how to beat this thing, except via the voters themselves, yet they are the root of the problem...see Tea Parties for reference...I'm a bad vibe, I know

A good general doesn't take unnecessary risks with his own life. He shouldn't be doing things that might earn him a medal. Except. If you're Jim Gavin and the fate of operation Market Garden is on the line at Eindhoven. If you're Robert E. Lee and the Yankees have broken your line at what will become known as the Bloody Angle. If you're Alexander Rodimtsev and the Nazis have penetrated to your command bunker and the whole Red Army's ferry capability into Stalingrad collapses unless you and your HQ staff, with grenade and pistol, can regain control of the situation for long enough that the next ferryload of your guardsmen can land. wikipedia gives details
A pious young yeshivah-bocher finds himself perturbed by the rebbe's behavior. He beseeches the rebbe to grant him an interview.
"What can I do for you, my son?"
"Well, rebbe, you know that in the laws it says, 'Thou shalt complete thy purifications before thou partakest of the mikvah.' But I have seen you clipping your fingernails and toenails after you emerge from the ritual bath."
"You are right to question me, my boy. But the answer is is a deep mystery that cannot be revealed lightly. Go and fast for a week, and come back."
The yeshivah student does his fast, and, slightly emaciated, returns in a week.
"Rebbe, what is this great mystery."
"You are too impatient, my boy. Fast another week."
And so on.
Finally, the poor student comes back, half starved, and demands an answer.
"This is only for your ears, my son. Bend your ear to my lips that I may whisper it to you."
The student inclines his head, and the rebbe says: "I clip my nails after the bath because - they're softer then."

the MSM has too much influence, they have their agenda...not that these times are different than the past in that regard...but info travels so fast, news 24/7, the media now has the ability to direct opinion rather than just report the news...it's an ethics issue and I feel the MSM is deliberately taking advantage of their power to make money...I hate the MSM
I would still stick with my original point that, especially for a general, heroism is not necessarily always the same as courage under fire. MacArthur, Patton, Ike. May not have taken any enemy fire themselves during WWII, but when they came back they were certainly American heroes. (OK, Patton didn't exactly come back, but you know what i mean)

I agree largely, but not for any ideological reasons. The MSM is generally spineless, even more spineless than Dems.
The internet has pulled back the curtain on the MSM, to some extent, and what we see isn't pretty. (ironically, as we get millions of new outlets via the web, the concentration of big media in fewer and fewer entities accelerates) Take heart in the fact that new media may eventually dilute even more of the msm power. (but i wouldn't bet too much on it)
Wot the hell was that? I've had some odd experiences at the rifle range, but I never dropped nor let fly. Business end, down range. ALWAYS!
Exactly, that's pretty punk. I think I'd prefer the .22 Eargesplitten Loudenboomer. It's just as pointless and ridiculous a caliber, the tiny bullet burns up from air friction after a few hundred yards yards. But at least you don't drop it.
"the guy has been self-plagiarizing for like eighteen consecutive years now — hasn’t added a single thing to his act since the first Clinton term at least — and this shit is just muscle memory with him by now. He’s just mailing it in over and over again, using as little mental energy as possible broadcast after broadcast"
I've said pretty much the same thing in the past but without Taibbi's flair.
Did we have someone defending the watermelon remark?
On second thought, don't tell me if we did.
I think that a person's history does play a big part in determining whether a remark was unintentional or not. For example, I'm sure it was unintentional on Rather's part. And, from the right person, Limbaugh's remark could have been interpreted as "reminding us of our racist past where blacks were enslaved." I could see Spike Lee (for example) deliberately saying it in that context. That said, it doesn't change what a big fat idiot Rush Limbaugh is - & I'm sure he meant it exactly as it struck everyone, with the "extra added bonus" of his insisting it was "just satire."
generals are not war heros in my opinion, and I doubt Powell would consider himself one...he never served under fire that I know of
While I am not sure I care whether he is viewed as a hero or not, Powell did serve as a Captain in Vietnam and he was wounded while on patrol during that tour.
Weedley-Weedley-Wee -- Specifically, the small fret guitar-playing technique that musicians have a tendency to display while in pursuit of a cross between a waitress and a hoover vacuum... This, of course, from his book.
