LGF at Dangerous Minds, Part 2

Richard Metzger has posted part 2 of his interview with me: Dangerous Minds | Charles Johnson: Why I Parted Ways with the Right (Part II).

Richard includes these comments:

Charles Johnson joined me for a discussion of the right wing flame war directed at him, the Darwin-hating, know-nothing Creationists and the frenzied insanity (and racism) of the anti-Obama right. Part one is here. In case you are wondering if some of the comments are being removed, they are. Some of them go too far. We didn’t pull them because Charles asked us to. We’ve removed them because they don’t belong here, okay?

(And of course, the ranters are already at it in the comments for part 2 of the video. They hate me — they really hate me!)

7 filetandrelease  Thu, Mar 11, 2010 9:16:58am

That is too bad Charles, the hate. Though my politcal views are to your right, this is a blog where in general differences can be expressed. That is how we learn.

The right and the left need to talk more and yell less.

We can even agree to disagree and let the votes decide.

I never understood the hatred for Bush, and I don't understood the hatred for Obama, let alone Charles.

That's actually fairly common over there. Many Arabs have very poor weapons handling practices. Some exceptions are the Iraqis we've trained, and the Jordanians (British influenced and founded). Islamist terror groups do tend to shoot each other a fair bit while handling their weapons wrong.

School policy requires that senior prom dates be of the opposite sex. The ACLU of Mississippi had given the district until Wednesday to change that policy, arguing that banning same-sex prom dates violated McMillen's constitutional rights.

The Itawamba County school district's board decided Wednesday to drop the prom because of what it called recent distractions but without specifically mentioning the girl's request, which was backed by the American Civil Liberties Union.

ACLU to the rescue!...I can't wait to follow this story, teeming with both political and sexual tension!...what a hoot

My personal take has always been that I wished prom had been set up to be date-less. They could have done it as a nice dinner-dance, with everyone just going, eating, and then dancing. I don't know if it has changed over the last twenty years, but when I was a teen you just didn't go if you didn't have a date (girls, anyway).

I didn't have a boyfriend, and while I did go, the nice young man I attended with was barely a friend. I would have had a better time just dressing up and going with friends.*

The pseudo-romantic pairings of prom dates are silly, for most youth. Just let everyone go and have a good time, and who would care what she wore?

*To be honest, and I hope this doesn't crush any guys out there, eighty percent of prom for most girls is the dress, and another ten is the accessories.

Marching to show solidarity with the al Aqsa mosque? That's the frakking caption? *facepalm*

No, they're marching because they're marching to show solidarity with those seeking Israel's destruction and oh, Israel's decision to try and protect Jewish heritage sites in the West Bank. The al Aqsa mosque has nothing to do with this march.

In fact, this caption from a related photo is more accurate:

Palestinian women supporters of the Islamic Jihad movement march during a rally against Israel's decision to include two West Bank shrines on a list of national heritage sites, in the Jebaliya refugee camp, north of Gaza City, Wednesday, March 10, 2010.

As was part one, this is an excellent interview, with a few exceptions.

Metzger was unfair in criticizing religious people as less credible or insightful in the political sense. The vast majority of religious people are centrist and anything but hard line. In fact, prior to Reagan most religious people identified with the Democrats and not the GOP. It was only when the Dems decided that Hollywood had more in common with the political leadership than did Middle America did the political landscape change. They traded Middle America for Madonna. Further, belief in God does not necessarily negate the primacy of science. There are legions of religious and spiritual scientists who are proof of that.

Secondly, in discussing Sarah Palin's supporters, Metzger asserted that 'working people' in 'certain regions of the country' were somehow less intelligent than people in other parts of the country. He also questioned Palin's bona fides as a politician. That is patently absurd and elitist.

Whatever Palin is (and I'm no fan by any means. I do not want to see her on a national ticket) the fact is she has a lot in common with most Americans. Like them, she graduated from state schools and not as an Ivy League legacy. She worked her way up the political ladder and took on her own party for corruption and won. Is she a Rhodes Scholar? Nope. So what? Neither was Harry Truman or the vast majority of Congress people or Senators. The fact is she was a well liked governor who received a large majority of votes in local elections.

To his credit, CJ didn't take the bait and ride that pony into the sunset. In this second part of the interview, Metzger would have done well to let CJ do most of the talking.

Yep. Just another goofy story of small-minded bigotry.

I don't see it as bigotry, necessarily...just an expression of old time values and propriety...I see nothing wrong with the garter thing either

re: #67 Aceofwhat?

that came up one or two days ago already...not that a fresh link is bad, but that's prob why you haven't seen it discussed much here today...

I hadn't seen any discussion of it, which is why I put the link up. Thanks for the edification.

Old time values and propriety often contain bigotry. Like in this case, they do.

Exactly. The "old-time value" here is that homosexuality is perverse and evil. Quaint.

My old time values and propriety reject the idea that it's proper for a young girl to give a boy her underwear to wear to a dance. Or that it is improper for two young girls without male companions to go to a dance together.

I could see their point if they had just nixed the tuxedo thing on the grounds that the girls were required to wear skirts.

The thing is, in an earlier and purer-minded time, this would not have been an issue at all. People flip out because 'prom date' is now a sexualized role, not a social one.

I think the entire thing is a bunch of overblown hooy...just another bump in the road forward

After lots of time denying teenage sexuality, now we're just freaking terrified of it and want to hit it with a shovel.

Unfortunately, that means that the most obvious displays of teenage sexuality-- like anything against the norm-- get hammered on all the harder.

Being a teenager sucks. Anyone who makes it suck more than it should is a total asshole.

You say that about pretty much everything, though. It lacks force.

bit of an overstatement...certainly not for everyone...I had no teen problems, or my own kids

Charles, your mind is dangerous because your canon is loose. If you were more of a dogmatist, people would like you better.

Well, the ones who agreed with your dogma would. The rest would still hate you.

Well, Nate Silver says that same-sex marriage is coming to Mississippi on or around 2024. Maybe they should practice a little first by having two girls go to the Itchawamba High School prom together.

You and your kids were lucky. I was the dump-on from kindergarten until 12th grade, and it only go worse as my classmates' methods of harassment, etc., improved with age.

At my high school, two lesbians went together to senior prom. Since they were openly together since junior year, nobody made a big thing about it (besides the Beavis and Butthead types.)

Yes its goofy to think that gays or lesbians should be allowed to go on dates with each other in a public institution!

This is just sad. I think for a long time many of us hoped that WWII would have shocked anyone with that mindset into a fearsome self-examination--would have hit their psyche like a 9 point earthquake. Didn't happen. It just keeps coming back to humanity like waves on a beach, it goes out, it comes in.

I wish there was something more productive to say.

re: #61 SanFranciscoZionist

What grosses me out is the 'custom' of the boys wearing their date's garter on their sleeve. I don't know how common this is, but it was a thing when I went to prom, and it's continued. The symbolism is obvious, and inappropriate as hell for a school dance.

Who knows what a "garter" even is?

Back in the olden days, I mean when my mother and my grandmother were kids, a garter was a thing you wore to hold your stockings up.

Then it became a "custom" for a bride to wear a white one, or a blue one.

But as an actual article of clothing, a "garter" is just the same as a detachable collar.

re: #96 Alouette
Who's mom said, "Hey honey, lets get the garter to go with huh?" Why would the girl be wearing such a thing. She's not getting married. Not that I would know anything about prom; I didn't even go to high school. My son didn't either. I don't think it hurt either of us.
