Chile’s Moving City

Science • Views: 2,078

The enormous Chilean earthquake last month not only shifted the Earth’s axis and shortened the length of a day, it actually moved the city of Concepción 10 feet to the west.

Studying precise GPS images of the area struck by the quake, a team led by earth scientist Mike Bevis discovered that the Chilean city of Concepción had moved 10 feet to the west. The epicenter of the quake was 71 miles northeast of Concepción, which is Chile’s second largest city.

The effect was widespread: The capital city, Santiago, was wrenched 11 inches west-southwest, while Beunos Aires, located nearly 800 miles from the epicenter, jumped an inch to the west. The earthquake was the fifth largest ever to be recorded by seismographs and even caused far-off areas like Fortaleza, Brazil and the Falkland Islands to change location slightly.

UPDATE at 3/11/10 10:05:50 am:

And the continental plates are still shifting: More quakes hit Chile as new president takes over.

SANTIAGO, Chile – A series of strong aftershocks from last month’s devastating quake rocked Chile on Thursday as a new president was sworn into office and immediately urged coastal residents to move to higher ground in case of a tsunami.

The strongest aftershock, with a magnitude of 6.9, was nearly as strong as the quake that devastated Haiti’s capital on Jan. 12. There were no immediate reports of damages or injuries.

They're not done shaking yet. More aftershocks today, including a 6.9 and 7.2. A 6.0 followed suit.

There are a whole bunch of ~5 magnitude quakes that followed those three big ones.

No word on new damage, but with all the damaged structures from the 8.8 quake, this isn't going to help - damaged structures are more likely to see additional collapses and other structures may see damage as well.

My exposure to it is from the book _One of Our Dinosaurs is Missing_ (companion book of the Disney film). Pretty forgettable Disney live-action comedy about a group of nannies trying to find a hidden microfilm before some Chinese spies do. It's hidden in a museum on a dinosaur skeleton.
Wikipedia link

A throwaway at the end of the book is a memo from the spies bosses about a Chinese plan to coordinate having 800 million people climb to the top of a step-ladder and jump down all at the same time - the Great Leap Downward -- causing a groundwave that will go through the globe and wreck the West.

Heavy-handed satire and bad science. But I remember it.

My follow-up was whether the others have the same source, or have come across the same concept/name in a different reference.

In a telephone interview with Global News correspondent Finchley Pompus, Pat Robertson admitted that God didn't really hate Chile, but simply preferred Fajitas. I read it as a reference to China's Great Leap Forward, which was an epic failure at attempting to industrialize the country by communizing its agriculture in order to fund aggressive expansion in industry. re: #72 Cato the Elder

The San Andreas fault line is the boundary between the North American Plate (east side) and the Pacific Plate (west side). The direction of the movement is northward. Right now the fault is locked or stuck, the pressure continuing to build. The pressure may lessen in a series of minor quakes or in the catastrophic scenario, in one major shift (Richter 8 or 9). The last report I read dealt with the lock-age beneath Parkfield and suggested that Parkfield could end up 30 miles north of its present location. Parkfield is currently the site of earthquake major studies. I live near the White Wolf fault which (in theory) is 250 years overdue for major shift.

All this is speculative anyway. Our knowledge of plate tectonics is actually very primitive. If the big one hits I'm hoping the local desert becomes ocean frontage. I'll realize a life-long ambition and buy a small sailboat and act out my version of the Old Man and the Sea.

How long until the shaking moves 'round the Ring of Fire to California? I wonder how the plate movements are interconnected. I believe Chile lies along a subduction zone, while the San Andreas fault is a transform fault.
