Every far-right site you go to is overrun with ads for Crisis gardens, guns, generators, and solar power systems. They seem to actually yearn for the end of civilization and the return of mob rule. Of course the only reason they will actually need any of those is if they topple the government and upend the monetary system because of their own actions. Maybe that is why they can be seen advocating exactly that in their comments on dozens of sites?
Some of these people have apparently watched "Mad Max" far too many times. Perhaps we should make more effort to convince them that if civilization goes then the internet will go with it. If nothing else that might scare them enough to make them stop...

Russian court jails nine over racist killing
Nine members of a Russian white supremacist group have been jailed for up to 22 years each in connection with the killing of a man from Cameroon.
Three of the group, known as Simbirsk White Power, were convicted of the racially motivated murder of Etizok Ndobe Ernest in the city of Ulyanovsk.Investigators said his throat was cut and he was stabbed repeatedly on his way home from work as a DJ in 2008.
It is the latest in a series of cases involving racist attacks in Russia.

The survivalist are especially hostile to GMO foods.
Mormons have been urged to build up and maintain a year's supply of food for their family since near their inception. Life in the desert country of Utah wasn't easy or predictable; it was a doctrine that made a whole lot of sense at the time.
It's also one reason why they forbid drinking. Too much food - grain, corn - was being turned into alcohol at a time when starvation was common among subsistence farmers.
Probably not as applicable today, although the family in Haiti who squirreled away canned and dried goods is probably feeling more smug than his neighbors these days.
Not sure what the opposition to GM foods is about; I hear that mostly from misinformed environmentalists. I'd tend to agree that over-reliance on a handful of hybrid seed stocks, planted in thousand square mile monoculture, is an idea that has some real serious downsides to it, not the least of which is reliance on agribusiness for next year's seed. Of course, that problem has been around since the introduction of F1 hybrids.

Palin and Pawlenty to help Bachmann raise cash
Sarah Palin and Tim Pawlenty, two potential rivals for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, will meet in Minneapolis next month to help raise money for Rep. Michele Bachmann, an outspoken conservative and popular figure among Tea Party activists.
Palin had previously announced that she would campaign for Bachmann this spring, and Bachmann's campaign followed up Thursday with the announcement that the former Alaska governor will host an April 7 fundraiser for the Bachmann's re-election campaign.
But Bachmann's campaign also announced that Pawlenty, the Minnesota governor, will be one of several "Honorary Hosts" for the fundraiser - adding an extra layer of 2012 intrigue to the event.
It should be quite an entertaining evening withal.

Fear has a way of making people stupid. Now, let's talk about that gold you were interested in buying.
/
Gold sure has been on a run lately but I suspect that'll end as the economic crisis winds down over the next couple years. I don't know how oversaturated the gold market is, nobody's predicting a gold crash that I've seen.

As I'm sure you all remember, WND informed us last year of the shocking truth that the Girl Scouts are nothing more than a recruitment/training center for lesbianism.
Well, that devious group, The World Association of Girl Scouts and Girl Guides, now is fronting for a UN inspired assault on the family, lead by Planned Parenthood:
Girl Scouts OK Pro-Abortion Planned Parenthood Sex Guide at United Nations Mtg
Wendy Wright, president of Concerned Women of America told the Friday Fax, “Governments and NGOs should be aware of Planned Parenthood’s insidious plan to work with UN agencies and girls’ organizations in order to profit from encouraging kids to be sexually active.”
Be afraid, very afraid, of those cookie-pushers in your neighborhood.

Radically over-priced in comparison to other commodities. The run-up was from folk trying to diversify commodities portfolios; once you've done oil and ag and such, all that's left really is metals. Silver went through a bit of a run-up on speculation that Indian buyers were gonna swamp the bourses, but nothing much came of it, either.
In a real crisis, gold is worse than useless. Try trading a krugerrand for a chicken.

Here's today poem from The Writer's Almanac.
For Cato.
and I think my wife who would see her own father perhaps being described...
Retriever
by Faith Shearin
My father, in middle age, falls in love with a dog.
He who kicked dogs in anger when I was a child,
who liked his comb always on the same shelf,
who drank martinis to make his mind quiet.
He who worked and worked—his shirts
wrapped in plastic, his heart ironed
like a collar. He who—like so many men—
loved his children but thought the money
he made for them was more important
than the rough tweed of his presence.
The love of my father's later years is
a Golden Retriever—more red
than yellow—a nervous dog who knows
his work clothes from his casual ones,
can read his creased face, who waits for
him at the front door—her paws crossed
like a child's arms. She doesn't berate him
for being late, doesn't need new shoes
or college. There is no pressure to raise her
right, which is why she chews the furniture,
pees on rugs, barks at strangers who
cross the lawn. She is his responsible soul
broken free. She is the children he couldn't
come home to made young again.
She is like my mother but never angry,
always devoted. He cooks for his dog—
my father who raised us in restaurants—
and takes her on business trips like
a wife. Sometimes, sitting beside her
in the hair-filled fan he drives to make
her more comfortable, my father's dog
turns her head to one side as if
thinking and, in this pose, more than
one of us has mistaken her for a person.
We would be jealous if she didn't make
him so happy—he who never took
more than one trip on his expensive
sailboat, whose Mercedes was wrecked
by a valet. My mother saw him behind
the counter of a now-fallen fast food
restaurant when she was nineteen.
They kissed beside a river where fish
no longer swim. My father who was
always serious has fallen in love with
a dog. What can I do but be happy for him?

I honestly don't know much about the market, all I know is that when the dollar is weak, gold goes up, and when the dollar is strong, gold goes down.
If I had any significant quantities of gold, I'd be tempted to sell now while it's high, and reinvest that into the stock market. But then again, I don't know squat about investing.

Tobacco seeds have been, and continue, to sell like hotcakes as folk try to grow their own for a hobby and to get around the tax-man. Thing is, a good yield on a plant is about 4 ounces, maybe enough, if the quality is good, and if you process it correctly, to make about 5 packs of low-grade smokes. Small-time growers (say, less than 5 or so acres) can't get enough grown to even begin to process it properly. Funny stuff, though, the idea of gardening your way through a crisis.

well, if I found my thoughts running along those lines, I think I might just pull up stakes, 'cause if my survival comes down to growing beans and tomatoes (although what shall I eat while my crop grows, and how shall I store it, and what if I f*ck it up and it dies like my lawn?), then I doubt things'll turn around before I've got to plant my next crop.

Interesting book "Farmers of Forty Centuries" - a book about traditional Chinese agricultural practices, has quite a bit to say about the night-soil men, whose efforts, in combination with the amazing system of organization that was ancient Chinese agriculture, made the whole system work. Think of it - no known soil depletion until the introduction of "modern" improvements in agricultural practice, and China's population was always large.
Anywho, the night-soil man was one of the most-feared and respected of the lower classes - there were penalties for folk who were thought to be "holding out" on the emperor.

Apologies if this was posted (I'm still catching up on the news):
Nancy Pelosi's office was told of concerns about Eric Massa (in October)
Joe Racalto, Massa's chief of staff, was uneasy that Massa, 50, was living with several young, unmarried male staffers and using sexually explicit language with them, one source said. But what finally prompted him to call Pelosi's director of member services, the source said, was a lunch date that Massa made with a congressional aide in his 20s who worked in the office of Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.).
According to a person briefed on the call, Racalto was concerned that the lunch followed a pattern by Massa -- who is married and has two children -- of trying to spend time alone with young gay men with no ostensible work purpose. Racalto, according to this person, also alerted Frank's chief of staff. The sources spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the political sensitivity of the matter.
Barney Frank released a statement confirming that detail, but says it wasn't a lunch date, but a dinner date.

I was just cleaning out my closet, and having to explain to my daughter how photographs USED to work.
See, you didn't know how they would turn out until you had them developed, and got them back. This led to a closet full of medoicre-to-poor photos, with the rare good ones on the wall. And things called "negatives." You couldn't just look at them on the monitor, and decide which ones to post on facebook.
I also found another antique. A little book for carrying around photos and showing them to people. Because, you know, there was no other way for people to see your photos.

News reports debunking the myth that President Obama is a Muslim did nothing to dissuade religious conservatives from believing the rumor, according to research by a University of Georgia professor.
Despite the best efforts of journalists, people on both the left and the right tend to believe what they want to believe whether it's true or not, said the paper's author, UGA journalism professor Barry Hollander.[...]

Like a lot of thing, I certainly don't know everything, and I was amazed at the night-soil trade, and the way Stephenson weaved it into his plot, history changing plot point, around uric acid and creating phosphorus, and then using the phosphorus in a number of attempts on Sir Isaac Newton's life.

Speaking of Monty Python...
My first trip to Europe, I took the boat. In fact, I booked passage on a Russian ocean liner, the Mikhail Lermontov. She later sank off the coast of New Zealand.
The voyage to Bremerhaven, where I got off, took ten days, including day-long stops in Le Havre and Southampton. Those were the first two European cities I ever saw.
From Southampton I took the train up to London. People had told me not to miss trying real fish-and-chips. Others had said to go for the delicious British bacon.
So at a streetside pub window, I ordered fish-and-chips. Then I thought about it and added a side of bacon.
The guy at the counter dropped his jaw. Then, in a perfect Pythonesque East-Sider accent, he bellows: "'Ere, this 'ere gent wants bacon with his cod and chips! Bacon! With fish-and-chips! Everybody larf at this 'ere Yank!"
Which everybody did.
I wanted to sink into the pavement, but at the same time I was proud to provide a laugh to the poor gloomy Londoners.
I recommend doing the same thing if you ever get the chance. Lessons in humiliation rarely come cheaper.

Beck continues yesterday's crusade against 'social justice', urging people to leave churches that talk about it:
Beck: Social justice "is a perversion of the Gospel," "not what Jesus would say"
Audio at link.
Also:
Yesterday, Beck told his radio listeners to "look for the words 'social justice' or 'economic justice' on your church Web site. ... If you find [them], run as fast as you can. ... They are code words. Now, am I advising people to leave their church? Yes!"As Joe Carter noted at First Things, taking Beck's advice would require all Roman Catholics to leave that church, since "Social Justice" is -- for Catholics as for almost every longstanding Christian denomination -- an integral aspect of the church's teaching. ("Social Justice" is, in fact, the title of Section One, Chapter Two, Article 3 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.)

OT--I have a swollen and sore bit on the roof of my mouth. It's on one side, behind the back teeth. I can feel a corresponding bump on the other side of the mouth, but not swollen or painful.
When I swallow, feels like broken glass in ear. Is this a lymph node, or a salivary gland, or what, and is there anything I can do to bring it down?
Sounds unpleasant. Could be some sort of infection. At a minimum, the swelling and pain indicate inflammation of some sort, so something like Ibuprofen will probably help reduce it until you can get to a doctor. But I would recommend getting to a doctor as soon as possible if things don't diminish substantially by morning.

Mr Martin denied the allegation and said his release was a "great victory for the rights of journalists".
No charges were brought against Mr Martin, but he was made to leave Gaza on the orders of Hamas.
At the media conference senior Hamas leader Mahmoud Zahhar said he believed Mr Martin was "a spy".
"I address that he is a spy for Israel," Mr Zahar said, in response to a question in English from a journalist.

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger told police that he did not have sexual intercourse with the woman who has accused him of assault, according to anonymous sources cited by KDKA-TV.
The sources reportedly told the station that Roethlisberger spoke with Milledgeville, Ga. police on the night of the alleged assault and admitted sexual contact with the woman but said that it was not consummated. KDKA reports the sources said Roethlisberger told police the woman slipped and fell afterward, injuring her head.

In the Biblical Book of Genesis, Onan (Hebrew: אוֹנָן, Modern Onan Tiberian ʾװnān ; Strong) was the second son of Judah.[1] Certain interpretations of the narrative concerning him have led to the term onanism, which means masturbation or coitus interruptus.
According to the text, after God had killed Onan's older brother Er, Judah asked Onan to have sexual intercourse with Tamar and impregnate her, the widow of Er, so that the child or children could be declared to be Er's heir(s).[2] Onan had sex with Tamar, but performed coitus interruptus each time, spilling his "seed" (semen) on the ground, so that there would not be any offspring which he could not claim as his own.[3] The passage states that this displeased God, who killed Onan as his punishment.[4]

re: #172 Cato the Elder
Where in the Gospels, pray, does Jesus not talk about social justice?
That's exactly the point Fred Clark makes over at slacktivist-- the link I gave under the audio. It's worth a read:
This is an astonishing claim to anyone who's ever had a Bible and their eyes open at the same time. Justice is an inescapable, relentless, pervasive, nearly omnipresent theme of that entire volume. It is impossible to read the law and the prophets, the Gospels and epistles, the histories, wisdom literature and apocalypse without being confronted incessantly with the theme of justice, justice, justice, justice, justice, justice, justice.
That accounts for justice, in the Christian teaching of every Christian church, being regarded as a cardinal virtue and an attribute of God.
I'm guessing that Beck would argue that he's not opposing justice per se, only "social justice" -- which he sees as a "code word" for Nazicommunism or something. But this is nonsense. Not just the slander that every Christian from the original disciples on down is a Nazicommunist, but the very idea that it's possible to speak of "justice" as distinct from "social justice."
Justice is, by definition, social. Justice, by definition, is something that exists only between and among individuals and groups of individuals and groups of groups. One might argue that "social justice" is redundant, but one cannot oppose "social justice" without opposing justice itself.
(I can't even imagine what "individual justice" might mean. Perhaps some kind of self-help therapeutic babble -- "You need to be fair to you ..." Or maybe the title of a violent action movie starring Vin Diesel as a judge whose daughter has been kidnapped by drug dealers.)
That trailblazers of wingnuttery like Glenn Beck would explicitly condemn justice itself shouldn't be surprising. You'll recall that just a few months ago, Beck and his allies (including most of the Republican caucus in Congress) were loudly railing against a related prerequisite virtue, empathy.
Yes, that's right, they said empathy was bad. Once they decided that, then it was only a matter of time before they were bound to come out against justice as well, because empathy is the foundation of justice. (See if you can arrive at some conception of justice that does not rely upon empathy. No philosopher, ethicist or religious genius ever yet has managed to do so.)
Let me be clear: When Glenn Beck asserts that justice is incompatible with the Gospel and with the teachings of Christ, he is not following the Pauline/Augustinian argument that perfect love transcends justice ("Justice that is only justice is less than justice," in Reinhold Niebuhr's phrase). He is, rather, saying that justice itself is a bad thing.
Glenn Beck is anti-justice. And he's telling his radio audience that Jesus Christ was anti-justice. It's hard to see how that doesn't make Glenn Beck anti-Christ. (The word there is an adjective, but the noun would also seem to fit.)

Twitter can be kind of creepy in a way; if you search for your name, it's a bit like being a fly on the wall, listening to people who hate you as they chatter back and forth.
This was just tweeted by "JammieWearingFool," a backstabbing asshole who registered a sock puppet account here in order to post nasty comments full of insults -- after I had trusted him to be an LGF monitor, and let him get away with pimping his blog non-stop at LGF for years.
If a GOP aide was caught working for al Qaeda, Charles Johnson's ponytail would stand up straight. Funny how he's silent today...
Then it was promptly retweeted by Melissa Clouthier, because it's just so much fun to bash me, I guess.
What are they talking about? This story, about an American in Yemen who is apparently hooked up with Al Qaeda: Buena man is accused of al Qaeda-related terrorist attack in Yemen %P% - NJ.com.
Was he actually a "Democratic aide?" This is where the story gets really, really stupid.
Campaign finance records show Mobley received $75 as an election day worker for Gov. Jon Corzine's campaign in 2005.
So this guy worked ONE DAY for Corzine's campaign, probably distributing flyers or something, and made $75 whole dollars, and now all of a sudden he's being described by these crackheads as being connected to the Democratic Party.

Right, because we all know that the citizenry will just do the right thing all the time without need for legal intervention. Sort of like the way that worked with civil rights and gender equality. They would have closed down the child labor factories on their own.

If they're gone for more than a day, you may have to call animal services.
Damn straight I would.
It's also a violation of the lease here to have a dog in the first place.
I wouldn't ever rat someone out for that, but I'll call animal services if they don't come home in the nest 24 hours.
I don't know these folks yet but they've been decent neighbours so far. I'm not even sure it's their dog and not a houseguest's. That might explain why the dog is crying too-- being alone in a new place while they're all out to dinner or something.
I'll be monitoring the situation and will report back.

Sounds like inflammation/infection of the adenoids or tonsils affecting the eustachian tubes (thus the ear pain) and/or middle ear inflammation/infection. Tylenol may give you some relief, but you should have it looked at.

And, if you lend any weight to the other books in the Greek scriptures, you will understand that there was a whole "organization" of home churches across the area, and Paul wrote numerous letters to these congregations and counseled them on their internal political structure and how to exist among the world.

Yes. Christ was not about the kingdom of earth but about the kingdom of Heaven.
First time I ever heard that.
Looking through the Vatican I see this:
Excerpt from CARITAS IN VERITATE:
First of all, justice. Ubi societas, ibi ius: every society draws up its own system of justice. Charity goes beyond justice, because to love is to give, to offer what is “mine” to the other; but it never lacks justice, which prompts us to give the other what is “his”, what is due to him by reason of his being or his acting. I cannot “give” what is mine to the other, without first giving him what pertains to him in justice. If we love others with charity, then first of all we are just towards them. Not only is justice not extraneous to charity, not only is it not an alternative or parallel path to charity: justice is inseparable from charity[1], and intrinsic to it. Justice is the primary way of charity or, in Paul VI's words, “the minimum measure” of it[2], an integral part of the love “in deed and in truth” (1 Jn 3:18), to which Saint John exhorts us. On the one hand, charity demands justice: recognition and respect for the legitimate rights of individuals and peoples. It strives to build the earthly city according to law and justice. On the other hand, charity transcends justice and completes it in the logic of giving and forgiving[3]. The earthly city is promoted not merely by relationships of rights and duties, but to an even greater and more fundamental extent by relationships of gratuitousness, mercy and communion. Charity always manifests God's love in human relationships as well, it gives theological and salvific value to all commitment for justice in the world.

Yes. Christ was not about the kingdom of earth but about the kingdom of Heaven.
Where in this passage does he mention putting off social justice until the Kingdom comes?
Luke 6:27-36
Love your enemies; do good to those who hate you; bless those who curse you; pray for those who treat you spitefully. When a man hits you on the cheek, offer him the other cheek too; when a man takes your coat, let him have your shirt as well. Give to everyone who asks you; when a man takes what is yours, do not demand it back. Treat others as you would like them to treat you. If you love only those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. Again, if you do good only to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do as much. And if you lend only where you expect to be repaid, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to each other to be repaid in full. But you must love your enemies and do good; and lend without expecting any return; and you will have a rich reward: you will be sons of the Most High, because he himself is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be compassionate as your Father is compassionate.

I see social justice as a secular political movement, not a part of a religious movement. There is some overlap of principles with Christianity, certainly. Equality of outcome through rule of law is a secular idea, I don't see basis for that in the bible...who is the authority here? Christ or the law?

A little snippet from Section One, Chapter Two, Article 3 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.-- the entire section is titled Social Justice, btw.
There exist also sinful inequalities that affect millions of men and women. These are in open contradiction of the Gospel:
Their equal dignity as persons demands that we strive for fairer and more humane conditions. Excessive economic and social disparity between individuals and peoples of the one human race is a source of scandal and militates against social justice, equity, human dignity, as well as social and international peace.44

Outlawed discrimination in hotels, motels, restaurants, theaters, and all other public accommodations engaged in interstate commerce; exempted private clubs without defining the term "private."
In other words Goldwater, Gore, Byrd, Thurmond, et al thought it was an individuals right to remain a bigot.

Exactly my point. People will choose to do bad things unless the threat of sanction forces them to behave. Exactly my point. People will choose to do bad things unless the threat of sanction forces them to behave. In Christianity, this is the natural human condition, and Christ is the only salvation from this condition. This idea directly contradicts the notion that an equal world can be achieved through secular authority.

The concept of social justice is a broad one. Not all social justice implies the quest for equality of outcome. People are garnered the rights through many social justice movement to retain the ability to attain equal outcome. Thus when a person of a certain race is granted the right to attend a particular school they are granted the equal right to attend that school but not to be guaranteed an equal outcome to their peers regardless of their scholastic performance.

Why does the atheist have to keep explaining this stuff to certain people. The pew sitters are suppose to already know this.
Sometimes you need a clearer picture of what you stand against then what you stand for.
I'll admit the one time I felt truly tempted to read the Bible was when I went atheist for about a week. Then I went back to Presbo-Agnostic and the desire departed...

I've seen this happen. Once in town I saw an older man try to intervene to protect a girl from an attack by the guy who was accompaning her. They both turned on the poor guy and kicked him to the ground - the girl was screaming at him. Fortunately it was Saturday night and in the centre of town, and the police were on hand to break it up right away, otherwise the result could have been much worse.
I pulled into a Shell Station off I-80 in Richmond California in the 90's..
I pumping gas and this couple in a Caddy was there also.. He started just beating the Shit out of her.. I ran 10 feet or so to confront him and he Pulled a sawed-off Shot gun from under the seat and pointed it my face...
It was that moment when I ran inside the office that I wondered why he didn't shoot me..I begged the girl behind the counter to call the police.. She would not do it...The Caddy drove away..I paid my bill..
Get back on the freeway...

People will abuse any moral or ethical concept. Do some people abuse the concept of social justice? I'm sure they do. But it's a small percentage compared to the overall scheme of things. That is the overall good that comes from the concept of social justice (both secular and religious) outweighs the occasional and infrequent abuse. One cannot put all social justice movements in one box and that includes those motivated by political ideologies.

One night when I was living in the Cascade district in Seattle a drunk couple from one of the bars got into it in the parking lot. Lots of screaming and bad noises. By the time I opened up the apartment window he was terrorizing her in the corner of my building four floors down, blood running down her face. Called 911, and made a report. Then I leaned out the window with my Marlin lever gun, cycled the action and told him it was now time to cut it the fuck out. He tried to leave but the cops got there quick. Nice guys, they didn't say boo about the rifle.
Due to some paperwork snafu I didn't hear anything more until six to nine months later when I got a call from the prosecutor asking if I was willing to testify. On hearing that I was the dude signed a plea bargain. Yay.

i gotta admit, i'm terribly conflicted about it. on one hand, i think that the Mossab Hasan Yousefs of the world probably get it, and the context of the graphic. on the other hand, it requires one to spend all their credibility on that lone item, leaving virtually nothing left over for discussions like this one.

When people talk derisively about "equality of outcome", they are talking through their asshats.
Social justice is about taking care of the weak, the widows and orphans, the sick, the disabled, the downtrodden, the forgotten ones.
Just like it says in the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Gospels and - yes! - the Koran.
It is not about turning the weak into the strong - an impossibility - but about the strong using their strength for something more powerful and mighty than increasing their own little fiefdoms.

Beck might possibly be worried about being considered anti-Catholic, insofar as he ever worries about anything:
Although many Protestant denomination express concerns about social justice, the term is most closely associated with the social teachings of the Catholic Church. A Jesuit priest, Luigi Taparelli D’Azeglio, coined the term in the 1840s and based the concept on the teachings of Thomas Aquinas.
According to the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church, “a large part of the Church’s social teaching is solicited and determined by important social questions, to which social justice is the proper answer.” Social justice is even given a section in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
Could Beck’s claim be construed as “anti-Catholic?” Yes and no. I think if anyone else had made the remark it would have been hard to dismiss the anti-Catholic undertones. But Beck is a special case: He is too prone to say any dumb thing that pops into his head and too ignorant about history and religion to truly understand the implications of his statement. This doesn’t excuse him, of course, but it certainly is reason not to be too shocked when a self-professed “rodeo clown” advises people to leave their churches over Catholic “code words” like social justice.
Still, I’m curious to see how Beck’s loyal defenders will excuse his latest outrageous remarks. If we’re not supposed to take him seriously when he says stuff like this, when exactly are we to take him seriously?

Quite so. In Luke, I believe, the passage about if you hold a feast, invite the poor, the infirm, and the lame, because they cannot repay you but I will.
(paraphrased)
And further, about making the weak understand that when they do something little to help those around them, it feels big not just to them but to God as well. The verse about the widow who contributed "two mites" but in Jesus' eyes, contributed "more than you all" gets me every time.

Meanwhile, back in the heartland, state legislators are having their fun:
Don’t define gays under domestic abuse protection, lawmaker proposes
A Windsor Heights representative unsuccessfully lobbied for the House today to adopt an amendment to a domestic abuse bill that would have defined a spouse as between one man and one woman.
[...]
Rep. Chris Hagenow, R-Windsor Heights, offered an amendment that would define the term spouse to be a person of marriage that is valid under Iowa law that says marriage is between one man and one woman.
Because, well, homosexual-union spouses can't be abused because they can't be spouses, or something like that.
Amendment would keep local hate crime files in Oklahoma
A state law enforcement agency would not be required to share investigative files with federal agencies under changes proposed to the state’s hate crime bill.
In an amendment presented on the Senate floor Wednesday afternoon, Sen. Steve Russell, R-Oklahoma City, gutted a bill that had been filed to create a task force to study the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association, and inserted language to make changes to the state’s hate crime statutes.
Under the new provisions of Senate Bill 1965, reports that were collected during investigations of possible hate crime that did not end in a conviction would be destroyed or kept by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.
Russell said the bill is meant to prevent the federal law enforcement officials from taking over a case and applying different standards when local law enforcement has already investigated a case.
Because a hate crime in other states isn't a hate crime in Oklahoma...

A Windsor Heights representative unsuccessfully lobbied for the House today to adopt an amendment to a domestic abuse bill that would have defined a spouse as between one man and one woman.
That is a truly pathetic pursuit, even by politician standards.

re: #263 iceweasel
Hi
Hey it can go like that but I'll share a story from my front yard. I wake up to the sound of screaming. It's summer all the windows are wide open. From my second story bathroom I look out to see a man roughing a woman up, not beating her just grabbing and shoving. The woman is cowering. It's 2:30 am. I have Dragon_Lady on 9-11 calling LAPD. Then he goes to slap or hit at her. I start yelling at this guy I'm watching, I have a gun and to leave her alone and that the cops are coming. Then I heard him say to her "You lucky bitch people keep saving you, I'll kill you one day". At that point I was about to get out there and intervene directly, and I would not do that unarmed. I yell at him again, made some explicit threats, and he takes off. Thing is she runs off too, but the other way. Anyway I am so glad I broke that fight up. I admit it was from a safe place but still.... I was chilled to the bone by his threat against her.

Tamar is eventually forced to trick her father-in-law into sleeping with her in order to get pregnant.
And generations have named their parakeets Onan, 'because they spill their seed on the ground'.

Exactly my point. People will choose to do bad things unless the threat of sanction forces them to behave. In Christianity, this is the natural human condition, and Christ is the only salvation from this condition. This idea directly contradicts the notion that an equal world can be achieved through secular authority.
So people should stop going to churches that tell them how to behave through Christ?

Social justice is part of the Catholic Catechism, and also part of most mainline protestant denominations. Feeding the hungry, clothing the poor, tending to the sick.
If these are now supposedly purely 'liberal' agendas, I think quite a few conservatives are going to object to that.

Looks like another fake O'Keefe/Breitbart scandal is coming right up:
Late last year, O’Keefe and fellow activist Joe Basel went into the Detroit and Chicago offices of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) with a hidden camera. They pretended to be scam artists, asking employees there to participate in a complex kickback scheme involving federal incentives for first-time home buyers. In the excerpted footage shown to me by O’Keefe, the staffers seemed only to happy to comply.
The law says that the tax credit maxes out at $8,000 for an $80,000 home. On the tape, O’Keefe asked a staffer, “What if I bought a place for $50,000, but the seller and I agreed to write down $80,000 as the purchase price?”
“Flip it any way you want,” the staffer replied.
What if the place is worth much less — like only $6,000?
“Yup, you can do that.”
I wish I could provide more details — like the names of the staffers, or the exact dates of the recordings. But O’Keefe showed me the tapes just once, and quickly. O’Keefe did mention, however, that he was surprised he was able to avoid the federal buildings’ security systems

Dunno if this is up on Breitbart yet-- the wired guy did an interview with Breitbart and posted that today, mentioned the HUD tapes in it, and I guess threw this story together too.

Social justice is part of the Catholic Catechism, and also part of most mainline protestant denominations. Feeding the hungry, clothing the poor, tending to the sick.
If these are now supposedly purely 'liberal' agendas, I think quite a few conservatives are going to object to that.
There is already a sturdy, time-honored term for those worthy actions: "charity". Having enjoyed the blessings of giving and receiving it over the years, I'm all for it.
What I object to is the cloaking of a political agenda, which often thwarts real charity and real uplift, with the hijacked language of charity. There's nothing charitable about keeping people trapped on welfare generation after generation. Yet welfare-to-work was assailed as a heartless violation of social justice when it came into being. And that's just one example.

Texas Judge Declares Death Penalty Unconstitutional
A Houston judge who declared the death penalty unconstitutional Thursday clarified his ruling in an impromptu hearing Friday, saying he ruled the procedures surrounding the process in Texas are illegal.
During Friday's hearing, prosecutors filed motions asking state District Judge Kevin Fine to reconsider his ruling and also to proceed with April's death penalty trial of John Edward Green Jr. Fine maintained at the hearing that he believes innocent people have been executed.
Fine's clarification came in the wake of a firestorm of criticism from District Attorney Pat Lykos, the Texas Attorney General's Office and Gov. Rick Perry protesting that Fine ignored well-settled law.
Fine is expected to rule on the motions next week. He did not return calls for comment Friday.
When asked direct questions Thursday about his ruling, Fine said he was declaring the death penalty unconstitutional because he believes innocent people have been executed.

apologies if this was already mentioned too:
Beck: Fox News executive told me ‘you are the key’ to surviving ‘a global economic holocaust.’
Fox News host Glenn Beck has made a trademark of propagating outlandish conspiracy theories and far-right rhetoric, but his employers at Fox have long claimed that his views do not reflect the network’s. On his radio show today, however, Beck revealed that in a private meeting, a Fox vice president endorsed his apocalyptic fear-mongering, telling Beck that “everything you’ve been talking about is coming”:
BECK: [A] global economic holocaust is coming. I don’t know when it’s coming, but it is coming. And I was in this meeting and I pulled one of the guys out, he’s a vice president of Fox. And I said, “When I first started working with you — let’s have a frank conversation here — you thought I was nuts.” And he smiled and he said, “No, I would say I just thought you were on the cutting edge.” And I said, “okay, alright, sure.” I said, “Now?” He said, “Glenn, everything you’re talking about is coming. Everything you’re talking about — everything you’ve been talking about for the last year and a half. It’s all here now. And what you’re saying is coming, I don’t see any other way.” [...]
Now the question is, where do we go from here? … And he said to me, he said, “Glenn, the answer is, you’ve been saying it for a while,” he said, “but we have to convince the audience that this is really truly true. You are the key. You must be able to reach to your friends and your neighbors, you must, must, must, bring one person to the table.”

Exactly my point. People will choose to do bad things unless the threat of sanction forces them to behave. In Christianity, this is the natural human condition, and Christ is the only salvation from this condition. This idea directly contradicts the notion that an equal world can be achieved through secular authority.

I disagree. In fact, I would say that 'liberal agenda' as it exists in America has long been an expression of Christianity in our culture, and to say that 'social justice' is an evil that should require you to leave your church if they speak of it is nearly insane.
Agreed on the latter bit. On the former, I do not cede liberals the higher moral ground in our culture. Their good accomplishments are very real, and they deserve credit. But, they have not been alone in making this nation great, or even good. And their not-at-all infrequent wrong moves have been very wrong indeed, over the years.

I'm totally late to this thread but have to comment on this.
I just looked at the survival site. First reaction is 'why didn't I think of this?"
Second reaction is 'what a bunch of liars and scammers.'
These seeds are not 'rare' and not grown in secret plots and they are not offering any sort 'deal'. Worth six hundred bucks? Ha ha ha ha.
I actually have some of those seeds and have catalogs that list every single one of the varieties in their pack. They're even carried by big seeds companies now. Heck the big seed companies actually grow some of them for sale. I did a quick calculation on the list prices in my catalogs and figured out that at the most you can get them for all for sixty bucks retail. These folks obviously get them wholesale from the seed growers so yeah, that's quite a profit margin there.
They're also pushing it on claims about their special packs and can that keeps them viable for years and years.
Anyways as much as I am a promoter of gardening and a promoter of people learning about and growing there own food I really dislike this sort of outright scamming.
491 | Jadespring Thu, Mar 11, 2010 7:44:23pm |
re: #490 prairiefire
What a pipe dream they are selling!
LOL
I should qualify 'rare' a bit more. Yes they are 'rare' relative to many of the popular varieties and if suddenly everyone in NA switched to these varieties then sure there wouldn't be a supply, but they aren't scary rare as this site makes them out to be.
The other problem I see is that it is very generic and doesn't take into account the specifics of peoples region and growing conditions.
492 | Jadespring Thu, Mar 11, 2010 8:04:06pm |
Ugh. I know this thread is now pretty much dead but here's another bunch of bull crap.
"Remember, non-hybrid seeds can be grown practically anywhere and have the ability to assimilate mineral and trace elements from the soil that man made plants just don't seem to have. That's because they were created by God as we read in Genesis:"
Do biology much? Obviously not.
Humans have been hybridizing and breeding plants since 'God made them". The seeds that they are selling ARE man made as they are a result of thousands of years of human plant breeding of wild plants. The ancestor of the big fat juicy tomato is a small grape size wild tomato that was breed into all the different varieties we have now. Same goes with every other vegetable.
Hybrid seeds are not GMO, though there are some hybrids that are GMO. Most GMO seeds are actually not hybrids.
Hybrids are plants that have been bred to take desirable traits from different plants and stick them together. There is no biological difference in how they function in terms of 'mineral uptake yadda yadda'.
The main difference between a hybrid and non hybrid seed and why most people who save seed from year to year use non-hybrids is that with a hybrid there is no guarantee that you'll get the same plant with the same traits if you save the seed. It will more then likely revert back to one of the varieties that made the hybrid in the first place. So for instance when I saved the seed from hybrid tomato and planted it again next year I ended up with plants that produced two different types of tomatoes, on smaller and sweeter then the original and one larger and more sour then the original.
Though rare but it is does happen, if someone does hybridize a plant and from year to year the seed produced actually 'stays true' then it eventually becomes a new variety that is considered a non-hybrid.
