People have been putting videos of their dogs reacting to things they don't like for years now, be it George W Bush, the University of Michigan, whatever. But now that its Obama, its racist? What in that 8 second video screams "racism"?

6 SanFranciscoZionist  Fri, Mar 12, 2010 6:57:11pm

Tomorrow we're going to Pet Cemetery in Colma to visit the grave of the dog my family had all through my teen years. It's the tenth anniversary of his death. My mother was more devastated by the loss of him than anything else I have ever seen happen to her.

We used to take him to Crissy Field Beach, near Fort Point. People from all over San Francisco walk their dogs there, and he had a regular group of play friends. One thing you notice about dogs is that they treat all of their kind with interest and respect. A Rhodesian Ridgeback will greet and play with a Pekingese, without concern for their relative size, different shape, etc.

Dogs are not racists. And trying to make them such for evil human reasons just totally sucks.

You can find some really sick stuff just watching what pops up on the #tcot tag.

Now, anyone on twitter can append a #tcot tag, of course, but you wouldn't believe the sick shit that rolls through there. And it isn't from liberals trolling them.

OK, I just mentioned Obama to Haku. He wagged his tail.

Then I said the name "Sarah Palin". He wagged his tail.

I uttered the names of Stacy McCain, Pamela Geller, Robert Spencer, Hitler, Stalin, Amalek, Judas, and Lucifer. He wagged his tail.

Then I said "Mandy Manners" and he wagged his tail, ran in circles, and peed on the rug.

My dog is a much better person than I am.

Hey, at least you're not in danger of going "urban hunter-gatherer." I came within about one day of that once. All that kept me from going to the park with a pillowcase and an appetite for squab was that one of my neighbors was moving out and had stacked his or her unused groceries in a milk crate in the hall.

YES! a half-bag of stale rice, a bottle of ketchup, and a half-dozen cans of mixed vegetables.

re: #43 Dark_Falcon

Hey Dark:

In honor of your troubles, here's a very short story of mine. It's part of a longer work. I hope you enjoy it:

And sometimes the world just comes together. Okay, one time only it came together for me, but it was deeply affecting. Basically:

One of my thousand-and-one random talents is the ability to run down stairs really really really fast. I don't know why, who knows, hard to figure, but I can beat anyone going downstairs. It sounds like machinegun fire when my feet hit down. I also mentally like the idea of going downstairs, especially underground, you really feel like you're getting somewhere, you know? Okay, upstairs works too, but it's a different kind of feeling going upstairs, it gets more portentous and bound every moment with every step you take, that pain in your thigh hits you know and you have to say, "Is this shit at the top of these stairs worth it?" and have to have a moment of introspection before you finish off the flight. But downstairs I just fly down, it's like I'm going to run clear out of the world at the bottom or something.

Anyway right, so the serendipity was this:

Remember that night at Franks I told you about? I think I told you about it. Anyway, downtown in San Francisco, out on the streets, I see the guy! The one who stole my hat that night, who was fucking putting it on and grinning as he went out the door. It sucked, and here he was. I was glad my memory was right for once and he was a tiny little rat dude and not a Bighunk McChestgriddle kind of guy, so I could go crazy on him without insurance.

So I was shouting "Hey" immediately and barreling to him, caroming little old Chinese ladies off me (and they totally got where I was coming from, you could tell from the looks in their eyes, this one old modom in a frilly hat number especially, she valued hats and she totally got me) and I must have looked like a white sharkfin ploughing through a sea of Asia because he looked up and saw my anger and did an 'oh shit' and scampered. He ran along the street a bit and I was hitting my stride but honestly thinking fuck because I wasn't really gaining or anything but then the stupidshit bolted down some stairs to the MUNI train station. He bolted down the stairs. I needed to catch up to a dude and he was going down the stairs. It was so good I almost screwed it all up by getting overexcited but my mind and body dodged that and I just clicked and went into my "I am a robot designed to run down stairs" mode and I machine-gunned down and it was fucking perfect so perfect that when I caught up to him and grabbed him around the shoulders I wasn't even mad anymore I was laughing like a bastard and he got so scared from that he like went a bit faster and I caught up AGAIN and he went like "Gah" and fell forwards and I passed him while he pinwheeled down the last five steps and I turned around to watch him plant his face like a failed flower into the harsh concrete and I said, "Beat you."

He held his job through downsizings more than once. My dad has a reason to feel I'm not measuring up, and it's my job to replace that image. And I will do that. I intend to make sure that he can feel contentment for me in time. And that's all I want to say about that.

I got a story like that from the other side.

So, I'm roped into seeing the X-Files movie when it opened. Yeah, she was THAT kinda chick.

Anyway, knowing what you know about how I used to dress (dark suit, dark overcoat, dark hat) and the fact that I chain-smoked at the time, you can imagine what happened as we left the theatre.

Some little bastard starts in with the "trust no one" and "Hey, wasn't that your daddy there? Are you son of cigarette-smoking man?" and all the rest of it. Juvenile and tiresome.

Guy reaches for my hat, raising his right arm high. I step into the space between his arm and his side, gently knock him off-balance, and grab his wallet as he hits the pavement.

Pull out his ID.

"I got your name now." Throw his crap back at him, step over him and off to hail a cab with my date.

She thought it was the coolest thing a nerd could ever do. And I think it was.

(Post-script: I wrote a three page letter to Chris Carter, 20th Century Fox, and the Lowes Theatre company demanding a refund for the film , on the grounds of deceptive advertising and false labelling of goods in commerce. It wasn't a movie, it was a crappy season finale.)

Speaking of movies about mean white dogs, one of the best movies I've ever seen is a 1989 French film called "Baxter". It was out of print for the longest time, but apparently the distribution rights were recently bought by some distributor that didn't have the slightest idea what the movie was about, and they re-packaged it as a sort of Cujo-esque horror flick, which is absolutely is not.

I've seen it about a zillion times, and I'm still not sure what it's actually about. Sometimes I think it's a commentary on sociopaths. Other times I think it's a commentary on Vichy France and its sympathizers. Maybe it's just a story about a [very fucked-up] boy and his dog.

Anyway, if you like black comedy (and I don't mean of the Will Smith variety) and are either fluent in French or don't mind reading subtitles for two hours, check out "Baxter".

re: #59 Guanxi88

Good point. As a teacher, I was never afraid of telling kids they failed. I just made sure I explained to them that they failed because they didn't apply themselves...not because they were losers.

I had two classes of International Baccalaureate Freshman English classes (and two Senior English classes) when I was a teacher. My other class was 'the losers'...Freshmen who were considered the mulch that fertilized the rest of the population. I taught honors curriculum to all of them...the IB kids and the transient population. Half way through the first quarter, one of the kids in my 'regular' freshmen asked me why they were reading The Aeneid while the rest of their friends were reading Of Mice and Men. Only the IB kids read that. I told them that there was no difference between them and the kids in the IB program, and that they could (and did) understand the material as well as anyone else. I also told them that, if everyone in the class showed me a C average in ALL of their classes at the end of the first quarter (no Ds or Fs allowed), I'd buy them all pizza.

Guess what? They did it (with one exception, one kid got a D in PE). Sadly, they gave me another IB class two weeks before the quarter ended, and I lost that class...but I still honored my promise and gave them a pizza party(best 60 bucks I ever spent). Two of them went on to join the IB program their sophomore year.

Sinn Fein Leaders Demand Year-Round Shamrock Shake Availability

The Irish Republican Army announced Monday that it will embark on the most aggressive campaign of violence in its history if McDonald's Shamrock Shakes are not made available year-round.

"The Shamrock Shake is a frosty, minty symbol of all that we hold dear," said Gerry Adams, leader of Sinn Fein, the IRA's political wing. "It is shameful that we as a people cannot enjoy this proud, symbolic beverage any more than one week a year."

"Unless the British government loosens its iron grip on this most Irish of shakes," Adams continued, "the streets will once again run red with English blood."

[...]

In a videotaped statement from an IRA safehouse somewhere near Belfast, Uncle O'Grimacey, the most radical member of the Grimace family, demanded the immediate loosening of Shamrock Shake restrictions throughout Northern Ireland. "Release the shakes to us at once," O'Grimacey said, "or the lives of your children will be forfeit."

McDonald's shake representative Grimace was quick to distance himself from his IRA-member uncle. "All shakes in their time is my watchword, and certain flavors all year," Grimace said. "O'Grimacey is a radical Grimace acting without the approval of the McDonald's corporation."

I think it's important.

I don't know. In one corner we have Governor Moonbeam, the oldest crankiest liberal to ever wear boxing shorts.

In the other, we have Meg, doing the Queen of the World routine, Carly, with the Demon Sheep...Poizner hasn't done anything crazy yet, but he's also not done anything very visible.

Hey all. Here's a funny story.

So I'm lounging on the couch watching tv and eating a bowl of hot pasta. Just as I was raising the fork to my mouth I get a burning stab on my chest. I figure that somehow I slopped a bit of hot sauce off the fork. Well it hurts really bad so down goes the bowl and I pull open the neck of my shirt to get at the splotch to stop the burning. I look and...nothing. Where did it...OMG...hornet! The thing is crawling around the inside of my shirt! So I pull the shirt away from my skin and start cursing and swearing and just generally freaking out. The thing starts crawling towards my armpit as I'm trying to work my way out of the shirt and not get stung again. Hubby who is upstairs comes racing down to see me have in and half out of my shirt and yelling "Get it off! Get it off" He doesn't know what the heck is going on and stands there looking rather dumbfounded.
So I finally get the shirt off and chuck it on the couch. "It's a hornet. I got stung." My chest is burning by now so I run into the bathroom to get the sting cream while hubby set about searching my shirt for the kill smush. By the time I get back the deed is done. Hubby is standing there holding the shirt and I'm standing there naked with sting cream smeared all over the chest and looking quite perturbed. He looks at me and starts laughing, "I guess this means that spring is really here."

Agreed. In the end it's your blog and you can do what you want. People have flounced over my blasphemous avatars in the past. There are a lot of considerations with context, bias, perception, etc. However, I'm a fundamentalist when it comes to blasphemy. Bill Donahue and Bin Laden need to be offended, ridiculed and mocked until they learn to live in a world where they don't have ultimate power to kill those who won't submit to their rule. I think it's a pretty important issue.

I completely agree. But there's a significant difference between mocking Bin Laden and/or radical Islam, and pissing on an entire religion.

I'm just saying: when the world is watching everything that happens here, you might want to choose your battles more carefully. And you might want to consider that it isn't only your reputation at stake, and that it's my real name that's out there on the Internet.

THAT means something to me.

I got some help and some good advice. My stomach however was very sour so by the end of the meal I was in great pain. It's better now but I am more determined than ever to find a way to make my father satisfied with me. He deserves to be able to have a chance to feel like his son is finally getting it right and I intend to give him that moment.

Sorry, but I'm going to stick my nose where it doesn't belong.

DF, I know you love your father and want to please him, but it isn't your job as a son to prove anything to him. If you want to 'get it right' do it for yourself. Living your life in an attempt to please someone else just makes it more difficult to get it right, and it makes every perceived failure feel worse than it could possibly be.

If you haven't actually talked to your dad, you may even be wrong about how he feels. If not, and he really is a hard father then that is his problem. You can't let your anxiety control your life.

The best thing you can do is talk to him, tell him you love him and that you want to live up to his standards but the anxiety is making your life difficult. No matter how he reacts, you'll at least know how he feels.

I have a tough father who mellowed as he aged, I am a tough father who mellowed as I aged, so, although I haven't gone through your life, and I wouldn't presume to know how it is, there may be enough similarities that I may be able to help. If you want my email, just ask.

Holy smoke: Bank worker saved from fire by divine intervention finds Jesus in his frying pan

When Toby Elles fell asleep while cooking a late-night snack, it really was a case of divine intervention that saved his bacon.

The 22-year-old was 'miraculously' woken after an hour as his lounge filled with smoke – and quickly had the revelation that he had left a frying pan on a hob.

While saying his prayers, the bank worker scraped the remains of crispy bacon rashers from the pan, but could not believe the vision that appeared before him - Jesus Christ staring back at him.

re: #70 Obdicut

That was barfaliciously funny.

One major difference I can see right away is that your avatar isn't pissing. Another is that you do not hypocritically demand respect for one religion while pissing on another. When people do that, it's just religious bigotry, and Mandy's avatar is about as simple and blatant an example of that as you'll find.

I'll let fly with "progg" myself from time to time, if confronted with a particularly irksome example of leftwing idiocy or malevolence in the news (or if I think of such an example from history). I hope I've shown I can communicate an opinion clearly without resorting to much name-calling, and this is not a hill I care to die on. But with so much other abuse flying about I don't see why I should sit bound and gagged. "Don't dish it out if you can't take it" is a playground lesson most people learn early on.

Well, there are actual good, decent people who are progressives, though. I know one of them here in San Francisco, Quintin Mecke, who is a tireless advocate for the homeless and works to keep the city honest about the conditions in the homeless shelters. You may or may not think that we're doing the right thing about the homeless, but Quintin makes sure that, in the programs we have for them, nobody grafts, nobody takes advantage of them, and they're treated with dignity and respect.

He's a progressive. He's a 'prog'. And he's a great man and I'm honored to know him.

Depending on who you ask, its a genre of drug influenced rock from the 70s (generally with high technical skill) or its a slur on lefties!

Calling "Prog" drug-influenced rock is off the mark. Of course many well-known prog musicians got into drugs, but in general they became shitty, hired Phil Collins, and soon devolved into Top 40.

You can't get away with trying to play things like King Crimson's "Three of a Perfect Pair" or Gentle Giant's "Free Hand" while in a sloppy state from your favorite trendy chemical amusement aid. Frank Zappa wasn't "prog", but he was infamous for firing his band members at the drop of a hat if he caught them high or drunk. That type of music requires a lot of discipline (hence the King Crimson album called "Discipline") and you just can't deliver it if you're intent on living the Otis Campbell lifestyle.

Loin can be a great bargain. Safeway puts them on sale sometimes and they'll even slice the loin into chops for free if you take it up to the butcher's window. One or Two chops will see me through a week or more.

I usually make stews or keep them for a cookout...either way most of it gets shared...I should freeze more food I guess...I have plenty of Beef-O-Roni otherwise

Sort of but not really. Is my avatar pissing on all of Catholicism/Buddhism/Atheism (depending on which avatar I'm using at the moment).? I'm certainly disgracing the symbols, idols and prophets. That's kind of the whole point of the exercise.

I dig what Charles is saying...with the GOP sliding further into right-wing nut oblivion by the moment, sites like LGF that oppose the bad craziness are getting scrutinized more and more by the krazees (primarily on the right nowadays, but on the left as well) looking for ammo to say that we're hypocrites. liars, or worse.

Charles' name is on the line with every post we make...there's no need to give the batshit krazees on both ends of the political spectrum any more ammo to smear us with.

LGF: The site that still fact-checks your ass and a sane island in an ocean of shit...

Everyone can be famous today! Holy crap, he did that art himself.

all:

Samuel Fuller's film White Dog is a movie about the intractable nature of nurture's grasp over that of nature. Unfortunately, this was one of his last films and folks called it and him a racist. Everyone should try and give this gem a look. The ending has quite a hook and it will stick with you. Some of the African American actors in it tried over the decades to support this film but no one cared to revisit the decided wisdom of the talking heads.

I could work on that.

Another is that you do not hypocritically demand respect for one religion while pissing on another.

You're more than welcome to bring that up when she complains about Christian blasphemy.

When people do that, it's just religious bigotry, and Mandy's avatar is about as simple and blatant an example of that as you'll find.

It just doesn't bother me. I'm an atheist and I consider people like Hitch and Dawkins as anti-religious bigots sometimes. Everybody has their own perspective.

Shout-out to others who might not know: go google for Joyce's (previously) lost erotic letters to norah.

And then read the eponymous biography of Nora [sp!] by Brenda Maddox, which completely explodes the myth that she was just a ditzy Galway grrl who didn't know what she was getting into.

She knew Joyce for what he was and loved him through thick and thin. And he was not an easy man to be married to. Many's the time Sam Becket had to bring him home drunk in a Parisian taxi. Her daughter was a hopeless schizophrenic and her son a hopeless alcoholic, and she maintained the family as best she could. She learned multiple languages and dialects just by picking them up around the places her impecunious husband dragged her to. And when Joyce died and was about to be buried at Friedhof Fluntern in Zurich, and friends recommended a decent Catholic funeral for appearances' sake, she said simply, "I couldn't do that to him."

She knew how to stand by her Jim.

Yes, we all admire doers like that. I've known them myself, some rather famous. We don't all admire people who merely assume their own wonderfulness as a given, and then use their self-congratulation as their guide in damn near ruining people's lives. Just for example.

That's true - here is mine. There are two things that bother me about that avatar:

1) Mandy's hypocrisy in demanding respect for HER god

2) It's off-putting to decent posters, especially to any Arab or muslim posters who might register here. I wouldn't expect a Jew to feel comfortable on a forum where people were - unchallenged - pissing on the Star of David in their avatars. The same goes for any faiths, especially I would say, those held by minorities.

Also, as Charles has said, when people do things like that it just gives the stalkers ammo. Whichever way you look at it, it's not too smart.

Nope. He did it on a bet, essentially. He figured out that the way to make real money was to start your own religion, not be a second-rate sci-fi author. He did what Vonnegut's fictional sci-fi author Kilgore (one-L) Trout would have done if he'd had the wit.

I'm still working on mine, but so far a revival of god-emperors with praetorian guards and German legionaries to protect them doesn't seem to be drawing in the masses.

Dark Falcon,

imo....

Look at this experience of losing a job as a positive experience. Right now, this is probably the last thing you can imagine.... BUT, having been down the road you are now on, I recommend it.

You are a young guy and you have the rest of your life waiting for you.

Take this opportunity while you have the time to look inward and find out where your passions lie. Buy a book or two that will walk you through the process of self-analysis (ie. aptitude tests). There are lots of them out there.

As an alternative, you could spend some money and take a standardized aptitude test. I did at the Milwaukee Jewish Vocational Center (I googled this place but didn't find it exactly..... this was a long time ago and I may not be remembering the name exactly right...)

Anyway, when I did this, I scored number one in xxxxx. I had never heard of this before. But, I pursued it and have done quite well in xxxxxxx.

Anyway, the point is... use this time you have to your advantage instead of dwelling on the negative side of things. Be positive... You are the one who has the power to change your direction. You have the power to do whatever is necessary to succeed.... more school... whatever...

My best wishes to you.

Yeah. I think I'm going to sign off now and go wake hubby up. The sting area is really swelling up now.

Amen. My father in law was attacked by hornets while helping a neighbor with yard work. The Dr.s said he can never get another hornet sting again.

Oh boy but have I. Where is the bite? If it is on one of your extremities (leg or arm) and you can clearly see a reddish line coming from the bite area along your limb as if it were traveling to your torso, go to the doctor/hospital.
