Why I Left the Right, Exhibit R for Dan Riehl

Dim bulb wingnut blogger Dan Riehl is increasingly specializing in some of the most vile, ugly commentary on the right; it’s a crowded field, but with posts like this one he manages to stand out: Riehl World View: Isn’t It Time To Euthanize Reid’s Wife?

The excuse will be that it’s “satire,” of course, and I suppose you could argue that it is. Rotten, mean-spirited “satire” that lays bare Riehl’s shriveled soul. What a disgusting creep.

I’m not sure I quite understand this, given that cost is so important as a burden to taxpayers when it comes to health care. If Democrats want so badly to abort babies because of it, why are we bothering with someone who has a broken neck and back at 69? It sounds to me like she’s pretty well used up and has probably been living off the taxpayers for plenty of years to begin with. Aren’t we at least going to get a vote on it?

Sen. Reid’s daughter Lana Reid Barringer, 48, who was driving the mini-van, and his wife, Landra G. Reid, 69, a passenger, were both injured. Landra suffered a broken back and a broken neck in the crash; Barringer suffered minor injuries, Sen. Reid’s office said Thursday.

I realize her crook of a husband and his pals in Congress have excluded themselves from the mess they’re going to compel everyone else to join, but we’re still paying the bills, are we not? I don’t see that she’s worth it at this point, frankly. I can’t recall her ever doing anything for me.

Come on, Harry - do your civic duty. The nation’s broke and counting on you guy. Pull the plug and get back to work. And don’t bill us for a full day today, either. This is no time to be sloughing off. Air freight her home, you can bury her during recess on your own time and dime. Or are you going to bill us for that, too?

Reid has stayed at his wife’s bedside throughout the day Friday and returned to the Capitol in the late afternoon.

And of course, he’s getting a lot of “atta boy!” comments from the other basement-dwelling throwbacks at his site.

Anyone still wondering why I want nothing to do with the right wing blogosphere any more?

Man I was trying to think of something pithy to get the thread started, but I came up blank.

What an utterly loathesome human being.

Pretty heartless. Even Hot Air readers had enough restraint to stay classy on the Reid thread last I checked.

That sounds so sociopathic. It's ridiculous.

4 Mostly sane, most of the time.  Sat, Mar 13, 2010 1:53:04pm

So the standard of care in this country is what this person has done, personally, for Dan Riehl?

Next, he'll say he's pro-life.

I hope somehow Reid never even hears about this. He shouldn't have to.

What a low-life piece of shit. I don't like H. Reid, but it would have never even dawned on me to stoop so low as to say anything remotely like this about his wife while she's in the hospital.

1. NPR said yesterday that the mom, and more injured of the two, was moving her fingers and toes last night. I forget the term they used, but all the nerves are still working despite the broken back and neck, so all the rest that's wrong with her can be fixed...slowly and painfully.

2. I'm going to quibble with the premise of the thread. It is a characteristic of "blogese," if that's a word, to engage in rhetorical hyperbole and satire. I don't know this man and will never read his diatribes, but that's just the nature of the beast. 10,000 voices are all trying to be heard. Not everyone can make it on talent and intelligence. Not every reader is interested in the opinions of the talented and intelligent. In the old days, pundits just had to figure out where to find bow ties, then he would stick out as "that one with the bow tie". Nowadays there's almost no such thing as bad publicity. I've seen much worse.

I haven't read the guy's post. I won't click the link and give him my hit, I all I've read is the excerpt.

But was he a big Schaivo supporter? I mean does he truly not get the difference between what debated in the Schaivo episode? It seems like he's trying to say the the "left" wants living wills and to permit people to die, so let's just give them what they want: Let her die.

I may have it wrong, but that's what it looks like to me. It's like the nuance of the position on living wills is just lost on him.

Just to clarify, Walter, and others, I'm never visiting this clown's site. I will never defend this degree of poor taste. "Defense" is different than "resignation to our fate." Ten thousand nuts say stuff like this every day. Many of them have aspirations to run a big, popular blog like this one, with enough popularity for it to be something more than a hobby someday, but first they need publicity.

When we give him attention, we are doing his bidding. When we shake our fists at him, we do his bidding. When we give him publicity of any kind, we do his bidding. When he sees all the hits on his blog from Charles' link, we have done his bidding. Ignoring this guy is the only correct move, imho.

Freedom of speech does not mean that anyone has to accept outrageous speech as acceptable social behavior. Tying this to abortion, as he did, is a massive abuse, dragging one of the most fraught issues in American politics in, just to make a cheap shot at a man desperately worried about the health of his sixty-nine year old wife.

"For every child, 2 years of age or younger, acquired by the United States Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service, the parent of the child will receive either a cash payment of 2000 dollars or 3000 dollars will be deposited in a medical savings plan.
HB.1729 is designed to increase the income level of the family or single parent, which will help them to become a self-sustainable member of society, reduce our burden of over-population and break the cycle of crime that is prevalent among our low-income citizens.

This will also enable more parents to enter the job market, becoming freed from dependency on multiple government programs.

The act will not rely on taxpayers money. It will pay for itself from the sales of the food products created from the children enrolled in the program. The low cost of the food product will also benefit all Americans, as it can be used as a substitute for higher priced meats.

The full text of the act can be found in the books that I handed out. I will now be happy to answer any questions that you may have."

Over at Lonely Conservative you have a post that epitomizes the far-right non-sensical confusion on health care:

While most of us were sending warm wishes to the Reid family, Dan Riehl said what most of us were thinking. (Cowards!)

[snip]

It looks like Harry Reid didn’t take Dan’s advice. Why should he? He and his family enjoy the best America has to offer when it comes to medical care. And we get to pay for it.

[snip]

Harry’s lucky his wife’s accident occurred before he and his comrades screw up health care. I’m not sure what Mrs. Reid’s fate would have been if she had to wait six months for neurosurgery.

He's resentful because Harry Reid has really good health care but seems oblivious to the fact that Harry Reid's health care is entirely government provided. Harry Reid is trying to get more Americans to have government supported health care like he has. He's not sure what Mrs. Reid's fate would have been if she had to wait six months for neruosurgery because she had government administered healthcare which she has!

*my brain hurts*

I'm not saying Reid has a good or bad idea but this type of argument makes no sense. It's like when Rush Limbaugh who makes millions and millions a year tells us how good America's health care system is after he goes to the hospital with his cadillac health plan.

I tend to look for the bright side in this.

First, my kids are done or nearly done with public school; this development makes their future brighter, especially if they choose to enter technical fields, because it reduces any competition nipping at their heels.

Second, since I work in a field heavy with scientists and engineers, wading through that first pass of resume culling will get a little easier, since anything with a "Texas" return address can go straight in the wastebasket, saving me a nominal 2% of my time, and in reality probably somewhat more.

I don't see this as reducing competition. In the long-term, I think the dumb will be spread around. This will embolden other reactionaries in other states.

It would be interesting to track Texas' immigration trend over the next few years. When emerging from deep recessions, it's fairly common to see a period of population shifts, as people long out of work become willing to relocate to jobs opening up in other regions. Another factor in how these trends flow, though, is educational resources; for example, we deliberately chose the community we live in because it has either the highest or second highest ranked public schools in the state, depending on what year the polls were taken, and this is a strong influence for a lot of people with families.

I suspect Texas will not be among the most desirable destinations when evaluated by this metric. I wonder if it'll show up?

My brother and sisters missed a year of school when we were young due to dad's moving us around. My mom made up the differene by borrowing books from the library and making us read. She didn't tell us what to read. Asked us questions and seemed to be interested in what we learned, gave us her 2 cents. When we went back to school the next year, we discovered we were ahead of our peers by at least 2 years! Schools suck. It surprises me homeschooling has turned into the fundamentalists' movement. I would think anybody who wanted their kid to have a more liberal education (in the old sense, not necessarily political sense) would try.

The cream always (and always will) rise to the top. Smart kids figure out early whats important and whats bullshit. They are the ones that will advance and be the ones we depend on for assistance

The others, much like generations in the past, will not. We'll always need blue collar workers. And theres nothing wrong with that. I ahve always advocated for Vocational Trade Schools as an OPTION to traditional high school. We had them when I was a kid. Those kids knew they wanted to be mechanics/ plumbers/ carpenters/ auto mechanics. They still took math and english, but the rest of their day was focused on theor trade opf choice.

I mean that it shows that he is even more removed than I thought from the experience of most Americans and thus less in a position to pass judgement on the efficacy of the American health care system. He has never had to submit a claim, never had a claim denied, never had to try to argue for a procedure or a reimbursement or never had to think about a deductible because any money he spends is so insignificant to his bank account that he doesn't need insurance. The problem with health care in America is not, generally, the quality of the care but the cost relative to the average worker's available income and aggravation in dealing with health insurance bureaucracy and this is something he can't relate to.

This has been building up for a very, very long time. Some of the earliest battles against replacing evolution with creationism in public schools took place in Texas, and the theocrat's awareness of Texas' dominance over the nation's textbook industry was recognized as ripe for exploitation at least 25 year ago, and probably a good deal longer. There has been a slow, steady, very deliberate effort to pull this off, and their persistence has won out, at least for the moment.

Meanwhile, power over schools has moved slowly away from local districts to the state level across the country, and power over the schools is inexorably concentrating in Washington, with more and more oversight and direction coming from that single source. Guess what the next part of the strategy is?

They're wrong, actually. One of the Tejanos who died also signed the Texas Declaration of Independence. Ignoring him is retarded. Also, ignoring the very real contributions of a man like Juan Seguín is ignoring history in this state.

These assholes are trying to whitewash history, pretending that Hispanics didn't die at the Alamo, or contribute anything at all. That's not only offensive, but it's a blatant fraud.

I know that...I'm pointing out that this is a small step towards a larger goal...they specifically used Travis, who was the only leader, Bowie, who was bedridden, and Crockett, who had no authority at all...as the measure of leadership...and in that regard they are right...they have cut a very fine incision here, and you can expect it to widen someday...they are very close to perverting the definition of 'leaders' or 'leadership'...in fact the men loved Crockett and would have followed him into the mouth of hell, and they did...the whole thing is perverse

Again dredging up our youth, I remember similar hand wringing over the liberal lefts attempts to hijack education by inserting such questionable political claptrap. I remember one attempt to have every male figure matched for a female figure in history texts. Sounds good except that women were largely excluded intentionally from much of what makes up US history. There were people then trying to remove Thomas Jefferson because he owned slaves. How ironic that those who defended him then are now abandoning him and those that rejected him are now supporting. How do we keep politics out of education? Anybody?

I don't think it can be done.

Sorry ,, but again, not defending Rush ,, he was NOT born rich

Yeah, actually he was. But there is a kernel of truth there, sometimes the old money types intuitively know that they have it easy, while the Randian supermen actually think they are the giants upon whose shoulders the rest of the world walks. Rush however, might actually be conceited enough to think of himself as something out of Horatio Alger.

DOJ: CAIR's Unindicted Co-Conspirator Status Legit

There's another letter circulating on Capitol Hill affirming federal law enforcement's belief that the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is the product of a Hamas-support network in the United States.

Assistant Attorney General Ronald Weich sent the letter last month to four members of Congress who asked for details last fall on how CAIR was named an unindicted co-conspirator in the terror-finance trial against the Holy Land Foundation and its former officials.

He included trial transcripts and exhibits "which demonstrated a relationship among CAIR, individual CAIR founders, and the Palestine Committee. Evidence was also introduced that demonstrated a relationship between the Palestine Committee and HAMAS, which was designated as a terrorist organization in 1995."

His paying in cash further underlines the distance he has from the average American's experience of health care and makes it a bit disingenuous to cite his own recent experiences as proof that the American health care system is fine.

I really think you're missing the point. It's fine to pay cash. It's great to pay cash. I would love to buy that Mercedes SLK with cash but I can't because I don't get $50M a year. So I, like almost every other American, has to have health insurance so I don't run the risk of losing my house if, God forbid, I get cancer or am in a car accident like Senator Reid's wife. The problem is, that health insurance is now so expensive that it is making many people go broke - and even when it doesn't, it might not pay when you need it for some bullshit reason.

If republicans think that Americans will benefit from state-run healthcare; Then they are opposing it to benefit their party over the interests of the country they represent.

This could be really nasty. The only thing that would help them is if healthcare is an absolute nightmare. I was going to comment about going into "the hole", but we are so financially screwed, the sun looks like a tiny star at noon.

Thing is, even the most liberal folks I know don't want bigger government so much as they want smarter, more efficient government.

Personally, I'd find some way to bring the government into the 21st century. Modernize and streamline all their computer systems, get rid of redundancies in the system in terms of red tape, give the folks who are just hanging around waiting for their pensions incentive to retire, etc.

Of course, this is all wishful thinking. The system is designed to be redundant, inefficient, and slow. It's going to take a hell of a lot to change the system, and neither party has any interest in shaking things up.

Only losers drive geos; Americans are becoming a nation of losers; you make my point. Did you borrow from the Chinese to buy your Geo?

Three vehicles, two houses. No payments. Blue collar.

I've lived around the world - 4 continents; was born here; hate to see what it has become; a land of whiney, spoiled, rude Walter E. Newtons.

You got it fucktard. Rude as shit. To assholes like you. I'm probably one of the most conservative and self sufficient people on LGF and you go tagging me as some sort of nanny state teat sucker.

It only shows how ignorant you are, and how you are only here to start an argument.

Difference between you an me, I can hold an intelligent conversation with people I don't agree with, you only have the mental capability to be disagreeable.

re: #291 Lidane

Thing is, even the most liberal folks I know don't want bigger government so much as they want smarter, more efficient government.

Personally, I'd find some way to bring the government into the 21st century. Modernize and streamline all their computer systems, get rid of redundancies in the system in terms of red tape, give the folks who are just hanging around waiting for their pensions incentive to retire, etc.

Of course, this is all wishful thinking. The system is designed to be redundant, inefficient, and slow. It's going to take a hell of a lot to change the system, and neither party has any interest in shaking things up.

I'm perfectly on board with that...the voters have ceded all the power to their elected officials..game over

"I realize her crook of a husband and his pals in Congress have excluded themselves from the mess they’re going to compel everyone else to join..."

Or they could READ THE BILL, as they're so fond of saying, and realize that it mandates Congress use the same health care plan they're trying to pass, and has since the early days of the bill.

Didn't stop the Republicans from introducing an amendment last week to force that very thing, and then standing around in confused blinking when informed they could not introduce it because it was already there.
