Inhofe is a tool who denies climate change and otherwise is massively hostile to science, though.

Between Boxer and Inhofe, I'll choose Boxer. Though I won't want to have to make that choice.

Hey - Zardoz gets his own tag.

At least Fiorina will be successful in getting some attention. I suppose that is what an advertisement is for, after all. She cleverly ducks discussing the substance behind politically contentious issues (such as climate change legislation) while exploiting angst over the general subject. She also avoids mentioning her GOP competitors, thus not giving them any more name recognition.

Eventually you're going to have to choose being the science-denying freaks who do lip service to the ideals you hold, and tainted, flawed 'liberals' who hold different values for you but do not wish to turn the clock back on science in this country.

If you really are going to choose the 'Obama hires secret muslims', climate-denying asshole over the standard corporate bullshit Democrat like Boxer, we're seriously fucked as a nation.

Hey all! I hope that you have had a great day!

Upon looking at some of the past threads, I wanted to comment in one place on several things.

First off, "settlements" in Jerusalem. I loathe that word in this context. Jerusalem is the City of David, the king of the Jews. You do not "settle" your own city any more than you colonize your own land. Further, Arabs get to build all over the place in E. Jerusalem and they get supported by the Israeli Government (welfare, medical care utilities etc...). To claim that Jews do not get to build a apartment in their own city when the Arabs already are receiving all of the rights and privileges of living in Israel, is to say that they have more rights than Jews do in their own homeland.

It is certainly true that the US has walked a fine line between being Israel's friend and maintaining the flow of Arab oil since long before Obama. The State Dept and all the actions of the American gov't are not always friendly or honest in regards to Israel.

This will persist as long as Arab states have oil leverage over America. That is the real lobby with power.

Making adds that make your candidate look creepy and weird doesn't seem like a good long term strategy, it may work well in Republican primaries but seems like giving it will give ammunition to Boxer in a general election campaign.

Hollywood rallies around Boxer

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) is pulling in some of the biggest names in Hollywood for her Golden State re-election bid — think Steven Spielberg, Barbra Streisand, David Geffen and Kate Moss — among tens of thousands of others.

A search of Boxer’s 2009 donations as filed with the Federal Election Commission show a busy year for the 69-year-old, three-term Democrat who was first elected to the House in 1982 and the Senate a decade later. In all, Boxer collected $5.8 million during the year, $4.6 million of which came from individuals.

They include some of the entertainment industry’s biggest names: Filmmaker Steven Spielberg and his wife, Kate, gave a combined $9,600. Spielberg’s old DreamWorks partner Jeffrey Katzenberg and his wife, Marilyn, gave the same. The third former partner, producer David Geffen, gave $4,700.

Actors stand out in the lists. James Belushi and Peter Coyote each gave $500. Sally Field gave $1,000. Former "Saturday Night Live" actor Kevin Nealon pitched in $250. Streisand donated $1,000.

Plenty of musicians show up as well. Jazz artist Herb Alpert and his wife, Lani, each gave $4,700. Singer Edie Brickell and her husband, Paul Simon, each gave $1,000. Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh donated $1,000, and folk/rock singer Bonnie Ratt gave $600. And Nancy Sinatra sent in $1,250.

Producers and celebrity attorneys were also plentiful: Wes Craven, director of the “Nightmare on Elm Street” movies, sent in $250. Attorney Alan Dershowitz gave $500, writer/filmmaker Nora Ephron gave $1,000, and longtime record executive Mo Ostin gave $1,400.

Several names linked to Bill Clinton and Hillary Rodham Clinton make an appearance. Harold Ickes, President Clinton’s deputy chief of staff, gave $1,000. Mack McLarty, Clinton’s top chief of staff, gave $500. And Harold Wolfson, communications director for Sen. Clinton (D-N.Y.), donated $1,000.

Among the other names: San Francisco Giants Vice President Laurence Baer, who gave $500; former California Gov. Gray Davis (D) and his wife, Sharon, each of whom gave $1,000; Google Inc. executive David Drummond, who gave $1,000; and Christine Pelosi, a San Francisco-based consultant and daughter of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who gave $300.

Next up, The cosmology video.

It was in general excellent except for a minor point and a major point.

The minor point is that helium did not rise out of the cooling universe. It is the first product of fusing hydrogen and the result of stellar fusion.

The major point: Einstein did not fudge or fake his math when he added the Cosmological Constant.

The CC is real and actually exists and it is the cause of the acceleration of the universe's expansion.

When Einstein added the CC to his field equations, he did something that was completely mathematically kosher. While it is indeed true that for a long time people thought it was zero, there was no theoretical reason to not include it.

An analogous example might be what happens when you evaluate an indefinite integral. You get the function + a constant. That constant might be anything because it dies upon differentiation. Thus, when you do the evaluation you have to say + C.

So it s true that Einstein put the CC in for philosophical reasons that were incorrect, however, he was mathematically permitted to do so, and ironically ultimately proven right to have done so. It is just that the value that the CC takes is even worse for his original philosophical reason to include it - i.e. a static universe.

Sort of.

He was motivated by the wrong reasons to look for a mathematically correct way out of his philosophical objections.

However, since he was Einstein, the math he used was correct - and for a different value of he CC then we actually have, would have solved his problem.

It often happens in physics that the equations are much much smarter than the people who wrote them down first. This even applied to Einstein.

Dude, that's not the way it fucking works.

The thign is entrepreneurship. You as someone who is just about to lose their job should be totally on board with the idea of a pool where people can be entrepreneurs and do something they're good at, making money (like I do, a decent middle class living) and supporting the economy, as opposed to being forced into a McJob because without the mcJob they can't afford their anti-depressants or their diabetes medication. You can be earning WELL into the middle class and still be 100% unable to afford insurance. That's abominable and criminal. This is supposed to be a country that supports entrepreneurs, and it does not. It cuts them off at the knees at every turn.

You're not heartless, you just have no earthly idea what you're talking about.

Agreed. I don't like the concept of paying for someone else's insurance just so they can "make art". Call me heartless, but I don't want to pay for it.

well if SHE would quit her day job & stick to finger painting I think we should pay for her insurance... it would be a bargain.

They sure don't!

But there's been a lot of incredible 70's style sci-fi lately. The Fountain was fantastic, has the feel of a 70's film.

The Island was a remake of Parts the Clonus Horror, which despite it's cheesy title was a vastly better movie.

The best sci-fi ideas came out of the 70's what we can do better today is grow it up and make it not campy but rather serious and give have the technology to make the visuals properly.

Why do people vote against their own interests?

I think it explains the phenomenon beautifully, particularly this line:

"You vote to strike a blow against elitism and you receive a social order in which wealth is more concentrated than ever before in our life times, workers have been stripped of power, and CEOs are rewarded in a manner that is beyond imagining.

"It's like a French Revolution in reverse in which the workers come pouring down the street screaming more power to the aristocracy."

I think that health care and health insurance are massively complicated subjects, that a lot of people have spent a lot of time and money intentionally pushing propaganda against health care reform, and that the Democrats are not doing a great job of communicating why those things are lies. I do find it disturbing that the vehemence with which health insurance reform is opposed is not actually matched by knowledge of the issues surrounding health insurance reform.

I doubt there are three Americans any where that don't want HCR...opposition to these bills is not always the result of stupidity or partisanship...but you knew that...people mistrust the feds, the mistrust the dems...it's too big, too complicated, to expensive and totally unexpainable to the average person...think whatever you want

Who wins in such a system? Not the entrepreneurs and go-getters and self-employed people you love to call the backbone of America.

Sounds very much like the utilitarian approach to art. That is, a thing is not "art" unless someone is willing to buy it.

Oh, I'm not that simple. Leonardo da Vinci and Jan Vermeer kept some of their best works in their own possession their whole lives, and they are no less art for all that.

It'll pass. Just like SS passed. it'll pass in a limited form and then be added to with reconciliation and future bills over time. And in ten or twenty years it'll be something that Americans take for granted.

I'm not sure why you're so confident. Every day there is some new chaos involving congressional Dems. They just don't have the single-minded (or mindless, if you prefer) discipline of the GOP.

For example, try to imagine the GOP leadership held back by the internal dissent of its liberal pro-choice wing threatening to kill big legislation. Hard to imagine because it doesn't happen in the GOP, but it's what the Dems face now.

Blair courts controversial US pastor Rick Warren in bid to unite faiths

Former prime minister builds network of Christian allies as he prepares to launch a religious 'offensive' in North America

Tony Blair is preparing to launch a "faith offensive" across the United States over the next year, after building up relationships with a network of influential religious leaders and faith organisations.

With Afghanistan and Iraq casting a shadow over his popularity at home in Britain, Blair's focus has increasingly shifted across the Atlantic, to where the nexus of faith and power is immutable and he is feted like a rock star.

Are you even aware of the NEA yearly budget? Do you know how many regional performers and artist DON't benefit a penny from NEA grants and programs? Do you have any idea how many millions of dollars of tax money is added to the local economies, 100 fold over of any NEA share, by the industry that supports local entertainers and artist?

Never mind. One must always consider the source of these things.

it's easier for congressmen to hide their dirt, hide their pandering and keep their jobs than for the president...he gets all the scrutiny....Americans really have no clue what their elected officials are up to for the most part imo...much easier for them to get re-elected than a sitting president, altho you may need a computer program to actually prove that with the term difference

The NEA. The whole caricature of performance artists shampooing with thousand island dressing while delivering a monologue denouncing the conservative straight white male middle class American taxpayer, and being paid for it with my taxes. Kind of colors my outlook sometimes.

And do you know how much NEA money goes directly to grammar school and high school art programs to help offset the pitiful arts budgets that most school boards have now a days.

If you have kids in school, or did, then I assure you that you're kids, one way or another, benefitted directly from NEA funds.

HE would be one of them and his point is that he is a very conservative person. So much so he belives in a 3/5 rule.

If a righty does something hateful and odious it only counts as 3/5 of a person in the right, while if a lefty does something even remotely bad, it counts as 5/3 of a sin to compensate.

Andrew Sullivan Revises History (Again)

Andrew Sullivan should be thankful that The Atlantic's fact-checking department has no purview over the magazine's website. The magazine's fact-checkers vet each word that appears in the print magazine for accuracy and context, but because they have no authority over blogs (or anything else produced for the web), Andrew is free to publish malicious nonsense, such as the series of map he published yesterday, maps which purport to show how Jews stole Palestinian land. Andrew does not tell us the source of these maps (in a magazine with standards, the source would be identified), but they were drawn to cast Jews in the most terrible light possible.

The first map in the series of four is most egregious. It suggests that, in 1946, nearly all of the land between the Jordan and the Mediterranean was "Palestinian." Land designated as "Jewish" in this map constitutes maybe five percent of the total. This map is ridiculous, not only because the term "Palestinian" in 1946 referred, generally speaking, to the Jews who lived in Palestine, not the Arabs, but because there was no Palestine in 1946 (nor was there an Israel.) There was only the British Mandate. Jews lived throughout the territory then occupied by the British, including, by the way, on land that today constitutes the West Bank (though in 1946 Jews did not live in Hebron; they were expelled in 1929, after an Arab massacre of Jewish religious scholars). The intent of this propaganda map is to suggest that an Arab country called "Palestine" existed in 1946 and was driven from existence by Jewish imperialists. Not only was there no such country as "Palestine" in 1946, there has never been a country called Palestine. Before the British conquered Jerusalem, Palestine was a sub-province of the Ottoman Empire. (And after the British left, of course, Jordan and Egypt moved in to occupy Gaza and the West Bank.)

White supremacist campaigns for Congress

WARSAW, Ind., (WANE) - He's led the Ku Klux Klan , and founded his own white supremacist group. Now, Tom Metzger wants to add "congressman" to his controversial resume. The Warsaw, Indiana native is campaigning for the Third District Congressional seat held by Mark Souder .

"You got to have radical, independent people, going for power, that's what you need," said Tom Metzger. "I'm not running saying I got to win, I'm running saying I want change."

The 71-year-old former KKK Grand Dragon and founder of the White Aryan Resistance has launched a campaign as a write-in candidate. He advertised his candidacy with a small ad in the Warsaw-Times Union Newspaper. It urged people frustrated with "the Republicrats" to "send them a real message." The seven-line ad concluded with "Write in Thomas L. Metzger for Souder's job, 3rd District."

...Metzger is no stranger to politics. In 1980, he actually won the Democratic Party's nomination for the U.S. House of Representatives in San Diego. He later lost in the general election to the Republican incumbent.

In 1982, he received three percent of the vote during a United States Senate run in the Democratic Party Primary.

Yep, Japan is on course for demographic doomsday.

Pretty much all of the industrialized world has been reproducing below replacement rates for quite a while now. In the US and most of Europe, population is growing solely because of immigration.

Interestingly, a report on BBC radio a few weeks ago noted that this trend - declining birthrates - has also taken hold in much of the Middle East. It had previously been thought to be tied firmly to economic growth and the rise of a middle class, but that isn't the case in the ME. More likely, the spread of mechanized agriculture is removing the incentive to have large families. There's no payoff in it anymore.

World population is projected to peak within the next 30 to 50 years, then decline. Other factors - the rampant AIDs epidemic in Africa, to name a major one - may bring it down more quickly.

1. Even if the Dems had eating babies as the "other white meat" as a party plank, it would not mitigate the racism of the GOP. The GOP would still be racist and just as two wrongs do not make a right, one wrong does not make another one go away.

2. I am not a Dem. You might notice I constantly write about their corruption and inability to lead, in fact I even did so this very thread.

I think you're overstating things, but the GOP has never really even tried to come to terms with its odious Southern Strategy begun in the late 60s. Starting then the Dems slowly began weeding out the racists in the party, while the GOP began to court them.

Ken Mehlman mentioned it in apologetic terms ONCE in a speech five years ago; and from that point on the issue has been entirely dropped.

My argument is highly salient at this point in the election cycle, and you are so full o' bile you can't see it. This is what the dems have to fight in this election cycle, with congress at an all time low for ratings. This is what the drumbeat from the right is going to be about ... now if you are going to run around calling Republicans racist as your defense against it I find your logic flawed.
There are a lot more links like that and they are all coming out.

I've pointed out the tea party crazy, the cracked religious right and the bigotry where I can. Now whether you are a dem or not, you sure as hell don't want the R's to win against them from what I've seen of you and I doubt you vote for R's. So what are you going to do Ludwig? It's the corruptocrats vs. the religicans this election cycle, who do you think is going to gain?

re: #362 SixDegrees

Actually the US population is reproducing just over replacement level. The figure I heard was 2.12 children per woman.

Report: Probe questions account of runaway Prius
[Link: apnews.myway.com...]

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Federal and company investigators probing a dramatic high-speed incident on a California freeway involving a Toyota Prius didn't find as much wear as they expected on its brakes, the Wall Street Journal reported Saturday.

James Sikes, 61, said afterward that he hit the brakes hard and kept the pedal down. His car reached 94 mph before a Highway Patrol officer helped him bring it to a stop on Interstate 8 near San Diego Monday.

The Journal said three people familiar with the probe, whom it did not name, said Sikes' brakes didn't show wear consistent with having been applied at full force at high speeds for a long period. Instead, they may have been applied intermittently, the newspaper said.

Well for one thing Thanos, I don't deny it exists. I write some very harsh critiques of the Dems and their hypocrisy here. In fact, just the other day I wrote about how I was disappointed at American women's groups for not saying more about the fate of women in Islam. I won't eat crab anywhere. Crabs are benthic detritavores: bottom-dwelling trash eaters.

Isn't the same true of shrimp, lobster and most other shellfish?

Most animals eat or do something disgusting. If you're looking for a reason to be vegetarian, it's not hard to find. But doing so can make your taste buds sad--I love a good parsnip, but I can't make it the centerpiece of meals.

Oodly enough out here in Oregon they have no concept of a crab cake. If you order a crab cake out here you'll probably get a combination of egg and crab served like a fritter. Not very tasty.

Different kinds of crab. Those on the West coast tend to give up their meat in pretty large chunks, while Eastern varieties wind up yielding a pile of shreds.

They're both good eatin', though, in my opinion.

Welll goood on you Ludwig! By your logic however I can call all democrats corrupt as you are calling the Republican party racist. I don't do that however because I am not so biased that I'm blind like you are.

The Democratic Party is racist...

Harry Reid - Barack Obama was well suited to a presidential run because he is a "light-skinned" African American "with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one."

Joe Biden - "You cannot go to a 7-11 or Dunkin Donuts unless you have a slight Indian Accent."

Joe Biden - called Obama first "clean" African-American candidate

Dan Rather - "a nice person ... very articulate" but an ineffective leader who "couldn't sell watermelons if you gave him the state troopers to flag down the traffic."

Blagojevich- I'm Blacker Than Barack Obama

Hillary - Hillary's comment about the plantation

Cynthia McKinney - "The Jews don't like Farrakhan, so they call me Hitler. Well, that's a good name. Hitler was a very great man. He rose Germany up from the ashes."

Jessie Jackson - Hymies.' 'Hymietown.'

Charles Barron - "I want to go up to the closest white person and say: 'You can't understand this, it's a black thing' and then slap him, just for my mental health."

Donna Brazile - (I) "will not let the white boys win in this election."

Robert Byrd - "There are white n*. I've seen a lot of white n* in my time." (oops, he don't count, he's dead)

No... I don't believe that for one minute... but we can always play the tit for tat game and come up with concrete examples.

These Japanese are strange people. You'd think since they live on such a cramped island they'd be a little more conscious about the environment. They are pretty fad oriented. The rarer something becomes, the more they want it. I have little doubt they'd empty the ocean in pursuit of delicacies.

On a related cultural "tradition" one can also wonder what happened with the 11 tigers that supposedly starved to death. I don't buy it.

They recently banned serving dog meat I hear, so the price of tiger meat should have gone through the roof, and of course the dried penises make viagra look like aspirin to the Chinese.

I admit it now Stevo, you are so much smarter than me. Your bold declaration that what I have been seeing as a worsening trend for the last year and a half outweighs my own observations and those of all the news posts I have read.

Stevo, your genius shall become my reality now. Just because you say so. If you tell me that the sky is pink, then gersh darn it, the sky is pink and all of them people who say it is blue must be wrong!

I am not gay Stevo, but for you I would make an exception for you if you told me to! You are just that convincing!

re: #486 Walter L. Newton

The difference is this: of course Democrats are often racist. But all in different directions, all disorganized (as Democrats are) reflecting individual prejudices, individual bigotries, individual electoral realities that they pander to. But the GOP strategy is to be racist in concert to win elections and shore up their tribalist base. It's organized, it's top down, it's talking points, it's dog-whistle tribalist identity politics, appealing to xenophobia instead of appealing to how people feel about policy. It's good strategy to win elections! But it's racist strategy. The Democrats used to have the Dixiecrats, but they left because of LBJ and civil rights. Now they're Republicans, and the Republicans welcomed them in as a reliable base. And with a black president, the heat has been turned up.

re: #506 Thanos

I've submitted several corruption links the past several days, not one was Republican, they were all dems. So you can try to pretend, but right now the dems seem to be in the lead. A few years back it was the R's - Randall Duke Cunningham and Abramoff / Reid come to mind -- but there's a reason Pelosi is NOT talking "culture of corruption" anymore so get a clue.

Sorry, but your gut feeling isn't scientific.

Corruption comes and goes in both parties. The "culture of corruption" was a slogan meant to win back the majority, which it did so the slogan disappeared.

Your assertion is that there are more corrupt democrats than there are racist republicans. I'd challenge that, especially with birtherism being supported so widely by Republicans. If you include Republicans who race-bait, then I seriously challenge that.

I am in no way contesting that there are corrupt Democrats. I'm contesting your assertion that there are more corrupt Democrats than there are racist Republicans.

And, as I've said, the GOP leadership endorses Limbaugh, who is clearly a race-baiting asshole.

Bullshit, I said there were and are racist republicans. I know more about them than you do laddie, and was pointing them out before you were.

This is what you said:

The republicans who have been in office that can be pointed out as racist are Ron Paul, Tom Tancredo, and likely a couple of others. I don't have hard concrete on the "others".

So you said it was Ron Paul, Tom Tancredo, and a couple of others.

That is minimizing racism in the GOP.

536 Linden Arden  Sat, Mar 13, 2010 6:38:22pm

I'm still part of their team.

It's not just guys here and guys there. It's the leadership. it's the organization. It's lobbying groups run by Republicans like Dick Armey. it's dog-whistle Tea-Party stuff that IS tied into the GOP, no matter what people pretend. It's acting in concert. Just like they employed gay-bashing as a pervasive strategy to get people to the polls across the country. We were the bait they used with these state ballot initiatives about gay marriage, to drive turnout. That wasn't a Republican here or there kicking queers and picking up some votes. The one that started off with "All people with green eyes tell lies" I was the only kid in class with green eyes. I'll give it five more minutes for links, then like I said way upthread I am going to go read.

The page includes the investigations into those people, Thanos.

re: #582 Thanos

Thank you for backpedaling your accusations towards me down to a 'smidge'.

Ok I'll check it out later but I'm not seeing cases in the news lately. If you have newstory links I don't have to dig for it makes it easier, if they are there it's better to just put the actual cases up rather make people dig, if you make assertions always good form to link direct to data.

I'm still a bit weirded out that people feel it necessary to defend L's obviously too wide smear. It makes people lose respect when you do that stuff. I don't think you are going to find lizards who do not think racism isn't rampant in the party right now and that there;s real lack of a leadership out there visibly standing against it, me the least of all.

NO. I will not cut it out. It's not ok to imply all Republicans are racist.

And yet I did not say that. In fact I am very clear about that. However, by attempting to deflect the conversation to this false and insiopid point you manage to ignore the very real, very widespread and top to bottom nature of GOP racism. You are truly being a blind asshole now.
