I mentioned in a comment that I’m out of town this week visiting family, so if posting seems lighter than usual, that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it. Here we have a Monday evening open thread, posted from my iPhone, and the little keyboard is very tedious to type on so I’ll stop now.

Okay...I didn't add the 27 housemates. But no sooner had I filled out the form did a black helicopter start hovering above my house.

6 Tigger2005  Mon, Mar 15, 2010 6:27:16pm

OK, I'll try it again here--posting my response to the horse/man marriage thread, since the thread itself is dead:

Let's, for a moment, take this argument seriously (and include pedophilia and necrophilia, two other fundie boogeymen, along with bestiality), and address it logically, leaving aside any instinctive revulsion we feel for these behaviors.

A horse, a child, a corpse... none of these can give CONSENT. You cannot have a consensual, mutual, equal marital relationship with an animal, a child, or a dead person. This simple fact alone makes such marriages legally impossible. You don't need arguments from the Bible, or from nature, or even from the natural sense of revulsion these behaviors prompt.

Now, when it comes to polygamy, it gets a bit trickier. Some don't have any moral or ethical problems with polygamy. I do, because I think it results in an inherently unequal relationship (of course, some people don't think marriage is an equal partnership). But are my moral objections to polygamy sufficient argument against it? No. However, I think a strong argument can be made that legalizing polygamy would create too many legal issues and complexities, for the individuals involved in the marriages and for society as a whole. Divorces in polygamous marriages would be legal nightmares. I think the case can be made that allowing polygamous marriage would be against society's best interests.

As long as it's a marriage between one adult with multiple personality disorder and another with multiple personality disorder, then I suppose it's okay. But to not have an answer to such an asinine question defies reason.

I think the argument goes--if we redefine marriage to allow for gay marriage, then why not allow for polygamy? I don't have an answer.

Well, I think I gave the answer. Morally, I object to it because of the inequality inherent in it, but is that sufficient argument against it? I don't think so, because don't consenting adults have the right to freely enter into unequal partnerships?

But, I think a very strong case can be made that allowing polygamous marriage would simply place too great a burden on society as a whole. Divorces in monogamous marriages can get complicated enough as it is...imagine the legal nightmares involved in sorting out divorces in polygamous marriages.

An interesting exercise might be to take a story of American, far right religious/teabagger nuttery, and do some replacements. Sub out "God" for "Allah," Geographic names of Texas/Utah/Alabama with Iran/Afghanistan/Yemen, and names like John/Michael for Muhammed/Achmed.

Then plant the story at a crazy site in the nutosphere and watch them hate on the infidels without knowing its one of their own.

3-Time Iditarod Champ Still Leads the Way Without Pot

As this story went live, a pretty mantastic dude named Lance Mackey and a dozen of his sled dogs were working their way across the frozen wilderness of Alaska's Seward Peninsula toward the finish line of the Iditarod, easily one of the toughest races on earth.

Mackey is in the lead again, a position the three-time champ has become used to, but this year there's something missing for Lance, namely a few sweet little puffs of performance-enhancing marijuana.

For 2010, an explicit ban on dope on the trail is finally being enforced. And it's all because of Mackey, an admitted marijuana user. We caught up with Mackey and a few of his competitors at the start of the race to talk about Mary Jane's last stand in the Last Frontier.

It took me three days to get the damn nacho sauce out of there last week, I can still smell the kerosene. Do you know how hard I had to scrub to get the cheese out? Now I have to get rid of beer stain, and I'll bet its something stupid like Coors Lite.

That's it people, the plastic cover is going back on the chair, and I'm unplugging the XBox.

Since my chair is wet I'm going to need another place to sit.

And, how much more will my taxes go up?

less than premiums have been rising over the last decade (roughly doubling, and forecasted to continue to rise).

And oh by the way, taxes are lower now than they ever were under Reagan. There's room to increase them, at least on the top 1-5% of earners (35% marginal rate now vs 50% under Reagan).

113 Tigger2005  Mon, Mar 15, 2010 6:55:27pm

Polygamy is definitely a complicated issue. Personally I think we're better off without it. I think monogamy recognizes the worth and dignity of the individual...it recognizes that each partner in the marriage deserves the full love, attention, and devotion of the other. I think that, in general, it makes us better people. But, once again, this is not sufficient reason to disallow it. The Constitution states that we have the right to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." If consenting adults want to enter into unequal partnerships, into relationships where they are devalued as individuals, is that not their choice?

But, the Constitution doesn't deny society the right to make laws protecting the common good or common welfare, even if that involves restricting individual liberties. And the expensive legal issues and complexities that polygamy would inevitably produce would definitely be detrimental to society.

I think it naturally follows the concepts behind gay marriage, and consenting adults. The concept of society tolerating various human relationships. I observe considerable prejudice on the matter, similar to what we have seen on gays.

I am more in favor of chasing that sort of prejudice out of our culture rather than polygamy/polyandry (that's for you Mandy) than endorsing any of those lifestyles.

Right. There are just too many potential legal nightmares involved in allowing polygamy...for the individuals involved (including the children) and for society as a whole. I think this is a more than sufficient argument against legalizing it.

I think the argument goes--if we redefine marriage to allow for gay marriage, then why not allow for polygamy? I don't have an answer.

I don't have an answer either, but I will say that 'redefining' marriage to include same-sex marriage requires nothing more than allowing any two people regardless of gender to enter into a marriage contract. Legally speaking, polygamy would be much more complicated.

Will we get there eventually? I don't know, but I also don't see that possibility as a reason not to move on same-sex marriage now.

I'm talking about any agreement that is influenced by any religion. The partners have to be adult, they have to be capable of making a decision, all partners have to have equal rights and the contract has to be agreed to by all parties.

The idea that marriage has to be one woman and one man is religious nonsense. We've grown beyond the need for a god, we now choose to have one or not, so we've hopefully grown beyond the need for an absolute figurehead to determine how we interact.

Hi everyone. I realize that the concept of "raising taxes" sound heretical on its face. But the fact of the matter is that tax rates are lower now than they have been for an incredibly long time, and the federal government is into some very expensive activities that aren't going away. I'm not saying we should go Greek and have austerity measures, I'm just saying that the concept of raising taxes shouldn't mean instant political death and instant lgf-mockery.

And yes, of course, reigning in spending must be a priority as well.

As long as those taxes are mostly frittered away, raising taxes will continue to be mocked by me. Moreover, I don't trust government that much.

Evening all.

I disagree, at least on this argument.

What legal nightmares? Contested monogamous marriages can be legal nightmares, except to lawyers of course. Why would a polygamous one be worse just because the pot is divided up between more people, which comes down in the end to simple arithmetic? In truth, we have the equivalent of polygamous marriage everywhere when half of children are born out of wedlock and perhaps 80% in some sectors, with multiple fathers/mothers within a household.

Why does "marriage" constitute a social threat when we don't seem to think doing the same thing without marriage is hunky dory?

Take children out of the equation and it becomes nothing more than a legal contract between a group of adults. Happens all the time in business.

No, my main opposition against polygamy is that historically it is a major method for men to dominate women with the collusion of the law, and those who would mostly take advantages of it, if allowed, would do so for exactly that reason.

What you can depend on a rent-seeking company to do is to rent-seek, though.

A company that is for-profit and has a naturally broken market is not going to be trustable without a lot of oversight. Like the private prisons.

To me, the amount of regulation that will be necessary to get private insurers to actually supply the market would be so onerous that there's really not much point in not simply making it single-payer.

But I know you've heard that from me often before, so I'm just putting it down again for the record, so to speak.

re: #164 Tigger2005

Even divorce in monogamous marriages often has costs for society as a whole. Those costs would be multiplied exponentially with the legalization of polygamous marriage/divorce. You don't think society should have any say in that?

Some of the costs suffered in the breakup of a monogamous marriage will not happen in a larger group because the remaining members can take up the slack.

You seem to be assuming that if one or two people in a polygamous marriage decide to leave the entire group will break up. Why would that be the case?

BTW, I am not advocating marriages like we see where there is a charismatic leader who choses who he wants, adult or not and children and women are abused, so get all ideas of Mormon, or Muslim, or even archaic Christian marriage systems out of your mind.

...Netanyahu consulted Sunday with the forum of seven senior cabinet ministers over a list of demands that U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made in a telephone conversation Friday.

...Haaretz has learned that Clinton's list includes at least four steps the United States expects Netanyahu to carry out to restore confidence in bilateral relations and permit the resumption of peace talks with the Palestinians.

1. Investigate the process that led to the announcement of the Ramat Shlomo construction plans in the middle of Biden's visit. The Americans seek an official response from Israel on whether this was a bureaucratic mistake or a deliberate act carried out for political reasons. Already on Saturday night, Netanyahu announced the convening of a committee to look into the issue.

2. Reverse the decision by the Jerusalem District Planning and Building Committee to approve construction of 1,600 new housing units in Ramat Shlomo.

3. Make a substantial gesture toward the Palestinians enabling the renewal of peace talks. The Americans suggested that hundreds of Palestinian prisoners be released, that the Israel Defense Forces withdraw from additional areas of the West Bank and transfer them to Palestinian control, that the siege of the Gaza Strip be eased and further roadblocks in the West Bank be removed.

4. Issue an official declaration that the talks with the Palestinians, even indirect talks, will deal with all the conflict's core issues - borders, refugees, Jerusalem, security arrangements, water and settlements.

Was there a list of demands handed to the Palis?

re: #14 rwdflynavy

So tomorrow I will fly my last flight during my command tour. This will most likely be my last flight in the Navy...Kinda sad...

My plan is to fly to Tampa for lunch and then back to Jacksonville. Should be fun.

A naval aviator, you are? Hat's off to you, then. This is for you:

Yet once an aviator was in combat […] one found new doors, new tests, coming up with a mad rapidity. Your first day in combat…your first bombing run…first strafing run…the first time you're shot at…the first time you see a SAM…which also means the first time you dive for the deck straight into the maw of the flak cannons…the first time your ship gets dinged by flak…and the first time you _see someone else_ in
your own formation blown out of the sky over the North-and in many ways what an aviator saw with his own eyes was more terrible than the sudden unseen things happening to himself.

For Dowd and Garth Flint this came one day during a bombing run near the Iron Triangle. They were closing in on the target, barreling through the eternal cloud cover, unable to see even the ships in their own wing, when all at once a great livid ghost came drifting across their path, from left to right. It was an F-4. It had taken a direct hit, and smoke was pouring out of the cockpit. The smoke enveloped the fuselage in the most ghostly fashion. The pilot had cobbed it to starboard in a furious effort to reach the water, the gulf, to try to bail out where Navy rescue planes could reach them. In the blink of an eye the ghastly cartridge disappeared, swallowed up by the clouds. They would never make it. Dowd and Flint plowed on to
the target, following their wing command, even though the gunners below obviously had dead range on the formation. To have done otherwise would have been unthinkable.

No, my main opposition against polygamy is that historically it is a major method for men to dominate women with the collusion of the law, and those who would mostly take advantages of it, if allowed, would do so for exactly that reason.

I doubt it, kind of. A woman who enters into a marriage where she, say, believes her husband to be the head of the family, as Christ is the head of the Church, and promises to love honor and obey him is entering into a social unequal relationship, even as, legally, she enjoys the equality fought for by feminist scum like my grandmothers. She has that right if she wishes, for as long as she wishes.

I suspect that someone who intends to have three wives and treat them like inferior beings probably wouldn't bother with entering into a legal contract that would give all of them legal rights. He'll do like Warren Jeffs types do now, marry religiously, and use fear and coercion to keep things bumping along. Legal polygamy would probably not benefit truly exploitative people much.

One reason why, even in societies where polygamy is permitted, it's not wildly common to have many spouses.

In Islam it is supposed to be limited to 4 (women of course) and also only if the man can afford to support them. Of course that is a wink wink rule, but one other reason that there might be limits is that not all women are suckers, whether married or proposed to.

You're right, sorry. It's other books that he endorses incest in, though i think he hints at it (in the child-raising part) of TMIAHM.

I like Heinlen, but a lot of his stuff is just half-baked socio-political philosophizing that can be disproved on the back of an envelope.

Just as a philosophical exercise, what is wrong with incest, beyond the religious reasons, understanding that our culture and technology, including medical technology, is far different than when those social controls were developed.

Most people feel a seat of the pants revulsion when they think of incest. They at one time felt that same revulsion when considering mixed marriage. Now the two situations aren't really similar, the one can have serious consequences genetically, which is why the taboo developed in the first place, but given our advancement in genetics and our certain to develop ability to control genetic problems, if the original reason for the taboo disappears, should the taboo also disappear?

If not, why not?

Backwards but first, " Whose business is it who I want to be partners with," you're absolutely correct.

Second, "Just more reason for the government to stay out of the business of marriage," the only reason that the government is in it in the first place is because some people have gone way out of their way to make it government business.

Taxation is inherently 'unfair'. Right now we tax income, rather than wealth. Is that 'fair'? Kind of. It's unfair to those who make high incomes but have high expenses-- like doctors. Would a tax on wealth be more 'fair'? Probably not, because people who do one really great thing-- write a kick-ass movie or create on great invention-- and then want to live off that wealth shouldn't be penalized.

No system of taxation is fair. What matters is what kind of taxation actually works, over time.

Because it isn't approached in an equal manner. The men in that system are understood to be superior to the women, which isn't acceptable in our culture. There is no need to include another culture's laws in our own, which is why it is a non sequitur.

I'm not opposed to trying to keep the wealthy from accumulating a larger piece of the pie, but I'm not confident that the lawmakers have what it takes to out-think many of them.

Well, most of the religious right's arguments against gay marriage are absurd (i.e. it will lead to people marrying horses, kids, or dead people). But polygamy is different. If we allow same-sex marriage, is there then really any case against allowing polygamous marriage?

If you stay on that slippery slope argument just for the sake of sliding down the slope, you're going to bump into something hard at the end.

This argument is similar to the ones made when changes to the laws allowed blacks to marry whites. Civil rights changes will continue until a balance is reached. I hasn't been reached yet.

There are societies getting along where the average taxes are higher than that, with thriving capitalist economies. (though right now, you know, not so much. But relatively, even.) Like Denmark.

There are societies with much lower than that with thriving capitalist economies. (though right now, you know, not so much. But relatively, even.) Like Belarus.

Picking random numbers and declaring them the limit is annoying, and I feel like we, as a society, react far too much to numbers said loudly.

re: #275 b_sharp

Most people feel a seat of the pants revulsion when they think of incest. They at one time felt that same revulsion when considering mixed marriage. Now the two situations aren't really similar, the one can have serious consequences genetically, which is why the taboo developed in the first place, but given our advancement in genetics and our certain to develop ability to control genetic problems, if the original reason for the taboo disappears, should the taboo also disappear?

I'm not so sure about that reason for a taboo on incest. I don't think hunter gatherer groups of 30 or so in the past would have been able to afford to have that taboo without going extinct and I doubt they knew of genetics in any real sense. I think it is that most family members just find the other side of the fence more interesting. Familiarity breeds contempt, and all that.

As to genetic problems, they are over rated. If carried to the extreme with a particular serious defect that is deadly or crippling, then it is bad news and the line will likely die out, but that is a rare condition. Healthy related individuals without genetic defects, which is the majority, will not spontaneously generate new genetic defects if they interbreed. In fact they can propagate beneficial characteristics better.

There are plenty of historically inbred lines that did not turn into idiots along the way.

re: #298 Obdicut

I never know what to do with ideological statements like that. Should you benefit more from the government's labors than the government does?

Taxation is inherently 'unfair'. Right now we tax income, rather than wealth. Is that 'fair'? Kind of. It's unfair to those who make high incomes but have high expenses-- like doctors. Would a tax on wealth be more 'fair'? Probably not, because people who do one really great thing-- write a kick-ass movie or create on great invention-- and then want to live off that wealth shouldn't be penalized.

No system of taxation is fair. What matters is what kind of taxation actually works, over time.

I submit that a system of taxation that concentrates money more and more amongst fewer and fewer will eventually lead to the ruin of that nation.

With respect, that was wea-lth ought out but not quite correct. Someone (like doctors) who make high incomes but have high expenses can deduct those expenses (at least up to a point), but they are still paying taxes, and at a progressive rate. A lot of doctors making a lot of money still pay a lot of taxes. Wealthy people (politics deleted) are people who already have a lot of money or assets and don't pay taxes on them (because they have already earned them). To make my point, try to pass a "wealth" tax and see how quickly Jean Francois Kerry-Heinz votes "NO."

Warren Jeffs was done in by underage sex as I recall, not polygamy.

And underage sex will still be illegal, and coercing marriage will still be illegal, and all of that will still be illegal, even if eventually, the laws change so that three people can get hitched if they want to.

Dunno. I don't see that much social disaster coming out of this, should it ever happen.

That seems like a long, long throw to me.

436 ggt  Mon, Mar 15, 2010 8:02:41pm

As I understand it, There was a supreme court case about bigamy/polygamy. It is illegal in this country, according to the ruling and Abraham Lincoln signed an Act to that effect. But, several states have effectively decriminalized both. i.e. Texas and any state that has these weird cults.

Marriage between same sex partners has not been addressed on the federal level at all.

Anyway, IMHO, before we tackle gay marriage, we should make it CLEAR that only Monogamous Marriages are legal in this country.

Interesting information about marriage laws.

Fruit Kicking Cancer's Butt

Scientists in Italy have developed a strain of tomato said to have enhanced cancer fighting properties. Combining the anti-inflammatory properties of the San Marzano tomato and the high antioxidant levels of the Black tomato, researchers hope the new strain will not only prevent cancer, but also Parkinson's disease and cardiovascular issues. It is currently being marketed at Italian pizzaioli. Cancer-fighting pizza? Sounds good to us.

Meanwhile, scientists at the University of Florida have been putting papaya to work. Inspired by folk medicine traditions in Australia and Asia, they injected an extract made from dried papaya leaves into cancerous cells. The "papaya leaf tea" boosted immune systems without harming healthy cells, which is a common side effect of traditional treatments.

That's what fruit's been up to. What have you done lately to fight cancer, huh?

Most of the stimulus package.

Thanks for clarifying-- worried that the case somehow got dropped or dismissed and I'd just not heard about it.

Overall, my point is that monogamy is the law-of-the-land, but no one seems to care too much. So, why all the broo-ha-ha over gay marriage, pass a law, no one will follow it anyway.

508 Ghost of Insanity  Mon, Mar 15, 2010 8:14:11pm

re: #375 Naso Tang

There were enough bad results that the taboo formed. Just like any taboo, most people applied it to everyone but themselves.

IMHO, we are genetically programmed to look outside our family to spread our genes, which is why incest is not really a problem.

and a tiny percentage of our population/diversity and land mass.

IMHO, it is impossible to effectively compare the US to any other country.

Well, I'd note that's really handy for people who simply prefer not to. I'm not in favor of discarding examples from other nations or economies. If we can point out why a particular policy is more troublesome when scaled up, sure, but not everything changes with scale.

A federal appeals court has ruled that a leader of the movement challenging President Barack Obama's citizenship must pay $20,000 in sanctions.

The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday upheld a federal judge's October 2009 ruling that required California lawyer and dentist Orly Taitz to pay the $20,000 fine "as a deterrent to prevent future misconduct and to protect the integrity of the court."

Taitz sued in Georgia federal court on behalf of Army Capt. Connie Rhodes.

Rhodes sought to avoid deployment to Iraq by claiming Obama wasn't born in the U.S.

Documents show the president was born in Hawaii.

I speak peace when peace is spoken, But I speak war when your hate is provoking, The season is open 24-7-365, Man up yo time to ride,

No need to hide behind slogans of deceit, Claiming that you're a religion of peace, We just don't believe you, We can clearly see through, The madness that you're feeding your people, Jihad the cry of your unholy war, Using the willing, the weak and poor, From birth drowning in propaganda, rhetoric and slander, All we can say is damn ya

My forefathers fought and died for this here
I'm stronger than your war of fear
Are we clear?
If you step in my hood
It's understood
It's open season

I don't need a faith that's blind, Where death and hate bring me peace of mind, With views that are stuck deep in the seventh century, So much sand in your eyes to blind to see, The venom that you leaders preach, Is the path to your own destruction, Your own demise, You might say that I don't understand but your disgust for me is what I realize, Surprise!
Your homicidal ways has got the whole world watching, Whole world scoping, So if you bring it to my home base, Best believe it, The season's open

I see you, Hell yeah I see you, Motherfucker naw, I don't wanna be you, If you come to my place, I'll drop more than just some bass, Yo you'll get a taste of a, Sick motherfucker from the Dirty, I ain't worrying not a fucking bit, I'm telescoping like Hubble, Yo you in trouble, Yo on the double, I'm wild with mine, Bring that style with mine, Fuck with my family I'll end your life, Just the way it is, Just the way it be, Do you understand? No matter if you're woman or man, or child, My profile is crazy, That shit you do doesn't amaze me, I'm ready to blaze thee

I don't give a damn what god you claim, I've seen the innocent that you've slain, On my streets you're just fair game, Like a pig walk to your slaughter, The heat here is so much hotter, And my views won't teeter totter or fluctuate, Step to me you just met your fate, And I'll annihilate, With the skill of a Shogun assassin, Slicing and dicing precise with a passion, In any shape form or fashion, Bring it to my home, Welcome to the danger zone, Cause your attitude's the reason, The triggers keep squeezing, The hunt is on and it's open season

I have no link, but I know I read a Runner's World article that talked about how people who eat a lot of fruits and vegetables are MUCH less at risk of cancer. Much. But when I say "a lot of fruit", I mean a lot. Fruit should be the #1 source of calories, followed by vegetables, followed by starches, followed by meat, etc...

That's probably true. I'm getting rid of the last of my non-edible lanscaping and replacing it with fruits and berries. I planted Blueberries, currants and gooseberries this afternoon. I should be more or less food independent next year.

The Worm: Strange clouds hover like a mothership

Late last month, an unusual cloud formation south of Wenatchee caught the attention of Wenatchee Valley resident Howard Lowell. He took some pictures and sent then off to the National Weather Service, which posted them on the agency’s Web site.

What appears to be holes or large openings in the cloud cover were an unusual phenomenon unofficially called “hole punch clouds.” (Google it. There lots of interesting information and pictures online about them.)

According to the weather service, the exact cause of the cloud formations is not known. But the theory is that descending air or airplanes traveling through the clouds disrupt the cloud cover. They occur in clouds that are composed of both ice crystals and super-cooled water droplets — water that is below freezing temperature but still in liquid form. Only slight disruptions in the clouds can create a void that gives the striking appearance of a hole in the clouds.

The two hole-punch clouds that could be seen south of Wenatchee on Feb. 28 also were picked up on satellite images from space, according to the weather service.

I've changed my gardening philosophy a bit this year. if you're serious about growing your own food I highly suggest moving away from the usual leaf crops of lettuce and spinach, the most productive thing you can grow is Kohlrabi. 60 days from planting to harvest. In the space that it would take to grow an 1/8th once of spinach or lettuce you could grow a 1 pound kohlrabi in 60 days. Peeled and thinly sliced one bulb will give you 7-10 servings of salad. stores well in the fridge too.

And, as any horsebreeder or dog-breeder knows, inbreeding can lead to positive characteristics as well.

Inbreeding is a scalar value, not an absolute one.

Incest is bad for humans for other reasons than genetic ones, though.

I not so sure about that. I breed high end dogs. Inbreeding has led to a hella lot of problems with purebred lines, especially in NA.

The Worm: Strange clouds hover like a mothership

This is similar to the formations seen in Northern New Jersey in the late 1960's, mainly over reservoirs. There were many pictures taken of these formations, mainly at night, hardly any during the day.

It was finally discovered that these "holes" were actually caused by quickly ascending alien spacecrafts that were syphoning water from the reservoirs and then shooting off at very acute angles through the holes.

Hence the holes. This "water drop" operation was observed for almost a year, and a little while after that, many of the "canals" on Mars appeared to change color, perhaps from being filled with water.

Except for Hawaii and Vermont, co-tenancy by the entirety is still a marriage only deal in the US:

A tenancy by the entirety (sometimes called a tenancy by the entireties) is a type of concurrent estate formerly available only to married couples, where ownership of property is treated as though the couple were a single legal person. (In the State of Hawaii, the option of Tenants by the Entirety ownership is also available to domestic partners in a registered "Reciprocal Beneficiary Relationship"; Vermont's Civil Union statute qualifies parties to a civil union for tenancy by the entirety). Like a JTWROS, the tenancy by the entirety also encompasses a right of survivorship, so if one spouse dies, the entire interest in the property passes to the surviving spouse, without going through probate.

Before we legalized same-sex marriage in Canada and made it so this isn't an issue these sorts of things happened here too. If the family didn't recognize the partnership they could shit-disturb and challenge things like POA in the heat of the moment and if you had an hospital overlord that was not sympathetic(eg homophopic) then even though technically the partner legal I's and T's dotted they could still go through hell and the person dies before it can be dealt with in the legal system. I know of similar thing to Obicuts story happening to a couple about ten years ago. The hospital wouldn't even let the partner in to see the dying person. It was horrible and thankfully was solved by some mediation from a pastor that got the parties involved to 'see the light and compassion' so to speak.

747 Obdicut  Mon, Mar 15, 2010 9:13:29pm

re: #742 Spare O'Lake

Yes, it was the US, and it's not the least bit odd since there are so many rights granted by marriage that cannot be granted by any other form of contract whatsoever, including power of attorney. This is just one of many thousands of examples.

The hospital had no choice in the matter, the federal law is clear.

Yes, it was the US, and it's not the least bit odd since there are so many rights granted by marriage that cannot be granted by any other form of contract whatsoever, including power of attorney. This is just one of many thousands of examples.

The hospital had no choice in the matter, the federal law is clear.

It is very odd to me that the federal government would pass a regulation regarding delivery of clothing, which does not defer to the duly made Last Will and Testament of the deceased.
Some gay rights group needs to litigate this stupid and barbaric regulation.

I've always loved that... I mean, could you pick a better name if you tried?

"Hey, everyone! New public holiday... RAGE day! Just let it all out, come on! You know you waaannna!"

I think the tea party crowd already used that.

I wonder how Scott Palin is doing in the race this year?

Is it Todd Palin you're asking about? Is the Iron Dog the same as Iditarod?

Yeah. They are. It's called fighting for the right to be married.
