I know this is a fresh thread and all... so apologies in stinking it up by discussing the HotWingNuts article on the racial slur incidents yesterday... but I just read the comment over there on the featured "Republican leaders denounce slurs aimed at Democrats" article.
That so many HotWingNuts commenters are in total denial is a testament to fact that rage/hate does indeed blind. I realize it is a function of human physiology, but I have to believe it is also a moral failing.

Yeah, it's an obvious problem from the outside but they just lack the ability or motivation to see it. Until recently Hot Air was owned by someone who writes for VDARE. The still publish RSM's writings in the Green Room. The site is filled with hatred and racial slurs directed often at the President's wife.
They can't see the problem.

Allow me to vent a bit. Dem Sen Jim Webb thinks it will help cut stress in War zones to reintroduce beer. Yeah. He's serious. This moron is serious.
Now balance this with this one. Good old Gen. McCrystal has decided to remove all the fast food trailers from forward areas. Yep, no more Pizza Hut, Burger King, or Subway. Because it costs to much to ship their supplies. Huh? Do we not ship the chow hall food? His other so called reason is it makes Soldiers fat. Really, and what does the chocolate cake in the chow hall do? But of course, he has a personal chef.
Now consider this. The suicide rate has been rising in conjunction with the number of prescriptions for psychoactive drugs. Soooo we give them booze and take away comfort food. What next, take away their care packages and give them pot?
Consider that when my Soldiers were angry and stressed about working on a holiday most everyone else had off, we NCOs chipped in and bought them pizza. Helped to take the edge off. Not so much buying them a beer while they have access to both guns and bullets.

Very foolish. Senator Webb should be more keen to keep Subway around than bring in booze. Alcohol plus firearms equals big trouble.

It's has absolutely nothing to do with the guardian not that using that sort of logic actually means anything. The story is about the IMF. This change if they follow through is a major globally reaching change in financial and economic philosophy.
It's so major I thought it must have been a Onion article when I first read it.

Frum is likely onto the truth here. The GOP traded long term ideological losses for a small near term (probably on a few House seats) gain.
Mentioned before, but I spoke with my very elderly mother this week. She is concerned that the "right wing billionaires" are going to take away SS. While my mother may not be the ultimate litmus test in politics, that she would even say such a thing to me was surprising (she normally doesn't mention politics.)

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei rejects new Obama offer of dialogue as a 'plot'
Iran’s Supreme Leader yesterday rejected a renewed offer of dialogue with Washington from President Obama, and accused the US of continuing to plot against Tehran while offering peace.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei accused Mr Obama of arrogance for using a Persian new year message to repeat his offer of talks — intended to defuse mounting international concern that Iran is building a nuclear bomb.
“You cannot talk about peace and friendship, and at the same time plot and plan sedition, and think that you can hurt the regime of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” said Ayatollah Khamenei in an address on state television to mark Nowruz, the Persian new year.
Paranoia is running high among the mullahs.

Free Republic's live health care thread now has over 5000 comments. Among the tidbits, we have allegations about Wiccans and child sacrifice (this being somehow tied to Obamacare), many demands for secession, a lot of babbling about states' rights, a large-scale resurgence of birtherism, and an apparent call for government employees to be fed to hogs.

No, unfortunately, busting tape (being over the BMI) is rising in frequency. It has become such a problem that the rule requiring discharge for failing to meet standards had to be relaxed and now all discharges for this have to be approved by a General Officer, O-6 or higher. You can count on the fingers of one foot how often that happens. It is actually quite easy to gain weight while deployed. I just don't think taking away Pizza and Subway is gonna change that. And it will effect morale in a bad way. There is nowhere, literally nowhere to go in Iraq or Afghanistan on the little bit of time off you get. Stopping by the fast food joint is a way of getting away from the military grind and getting a reminder of home. Didn't Jarod lose weight on that stuff? I don't know why they are getting rid of it. Just know it is real unpopular at my level. So far I haven't seen it written down anywhere, we've just been told by our instructors that this is in the works. Have to wait and see I guess.

Congratulations: You're fucked!
Getting un-fucked, if it works at all, is going to take something like 20 or 30 treatments with chemistry with side-effects that may make you question why death is supposed to be worse. If you take these treatments in an out-patient clinic, you can count on it costing somewhere around $6000-$8000 each time. If you have to do it in a hospital, expect that number to double.
But always remember: If you can't pay your own way, you're a scumbag deadbeat looking for a hand-out.

Keep in mind that there is no video, audio, etc., and that the source of the news is the negro Congressman himself. Those who were at the event say they heard no slurs whatsoever. But the media is running with it anyways.
The only time hearsay gets reported as 'news' is when it can be used to put White people on the defensive. And take note - Fox News - the 'conservative network' - has participated in this tactic as well.
The Jews are so afraid that a Nationalist party is going to rise in America that they are pulling no punches in trying to kill it in its infancy. But it won't matter. Eventually the cries of 'racism' will fall on deaf ears as the angry and abused White middle class finally rises up and puts this degenerate establishment to death.

If there is one thing the government should do it is provide health care that is not for profit. If it is run correctly it would be great. The problem I see is the government just struggles with running anything efficiently. This is going to take a lot of baby steps for us to get right.

Wow. I think the GOP just realized they lost, and they are now committing to the current battle strategy, which is to portray this mild reform as antithetical to America as a concept, hit the red alert button, and go full wingnut.
Anyone listening to Ryan? "America is an idea!"
Ok, no surprise on the battle plan, because it's all the GOP has (sorry, Frum). But... what comes next? Does the GOP hang everything on the short game again, run on nothing but cutting taxes and repealing Obamacare and keeping up the demonization and doomsday speeches?
What's the next thing they tell us they can actually do, and not just what they want to stop?
The GOP was obstructing it from the beginning. If there is anything wrong with this bill, it's because the GOP refused to participate. But that's about over now. Fortunately, after tomorrow, the Democrats will be able to proudly stand up and take credit for the total reformation of the substandard and unfair state of health care in this country.
The GOP has made a really big mistake not paying close attention to the will of the majority of Americans, who want this reform, who want this bill, Americans and doctors and the medical community who in poll after poll has shown favor to this health care reform bill.
But, the public will be able to make their dissatisfaction known this coming November when they will have to opportunity to vote out the GOP incumbents who spent so much time and effort in attempting to deny this legislation to this country.

From the House rules:
The Motion to Recommit
After the third reading of a bill (or resolution), but before the Speaker orders the vote on final passage of the bill (or resolution), a motion to recommit the bill, either with or without instructions, to the committee which originally reported it is in order. (Rule XVI and XVII) This motion is traditionally the right of the Minority and gives them one last chance to amend or kill the bill.

In the early hours of this morning, the beam energy was ramped up to 3.5 TeV, a new world record and the highest energy for this year’s run. Now operators will prepare the machine to make high-energy collisions later this month.
At 5:23 this morning, Friday 19 March, the energy of both beams in the LHC was ramped up to 3.5 TeV, a new world record. During the night, operators had tested the performance of the whole machine with two so-called ‘dry runs’, that is, without beams.
Given the good overall response, beams were injected at around 3:00 a.m. and stabilized soon after. The ramp started at around 4:10 and lasted about one hour.

I'm not watching but basically to get health care passed they had to agree to change a few things, (taking out some patronage, making sure Hyde applies) but they have to do it through two separate vehicles. So all of the bluster you hear from the Republicans right now is that the Senate might not follow through with 51 votes on the second bill, which would mean the original senate bill is the law that goes into effect. So there's a certain amt of faith that Reid will get the votes needed for the cleanup amendment in senate. (just 51 needed, filibuster not possible)
That's a very basic version of what's going on, so pardon me if I've garbled the explanation here.

Obama not only renews the European tradition of Appeasement (is there any thugocracy with which he was not fraternizing in the last months?), he is also almost as hostile to Israel as most Europeans are. And, most important: Like most Europeans, he has a strong love for Islam, which he has been promoting on several occasions.
Man, you're so full of shit, your eyeballs are brown. Contrary to the right-wing's fears, President Obama's not deviated much from many positions inherited from the Bush administration AFAIK, truth be told.

Yes, yes, yes... we have some local armchair weather people on a local forum up here, and they are usually better than the talking heads on TV...
Models struggling with a consistent solution for our next storm. General pattern is to bring an upper trough over NW Colorado on Tue and bring the trough across CO on Tue night and Wed. The nuances in how this occurs will dictate how big this storm will be. The trend has been to move the trough slowly and intensify across SE Colorado on Wed. All models have decent upslope from Tue afternoon into Wed morning.
Snow amounts at this time could be healthy, but the diffedence in the forecast right now is not real high. If I had to guess now, looks like 6-12 inches possible. Snow could start above 7000 ft by noon on Tue, and become heavy by late Tue afternoon and evening, continuing Tue night and diminishing Wed morning. Heaviest snow looks to be Tue afternoon and evening, potentially making the Tue evening commute difficult. Snow level will drop down to Plains level by Tue evening as well, but with warm pavement accummulation on the Plains will be minimal. Stay tuned for updates on this system, as it could become more powerful.
Next system after this on track for Fri night/Sat. This one also bears watching, as recent model runs have this becoming fairly intense.

Instead of this, can you point out where he is factually incorrect or substantively wrong in the article?
This part was an interesting take on the expansion of the commerce clause:
But the individual mandate extends the commerce clause's power beyond economic activity, to economic inactivity. That is unprecedented. While Congress has used its taxing power to fund Social Security and Medicare, never before has it used its commerce power to mandate that an individual person engage in an economic transaction with a private company. Regulating the auto industry or paying "cash for clunkers" is one thing; making everyone buy a Chevy is quite another. Even during World War II, the federal government did not mandate that individual citizens purchase war bonds. If you choose to drive a car, then maybe you can be made to buy insurance against the possibility of inflicting harm on others. But making you buy insurance merely because you are alive is a claim of power from which many Americans instinctively shrink. Senate Republicans made this objection, and it was defeated on a party-line vote, but it will return. [Link: www.washingtonpost.com...]

Thanos, when someone only writes about how the bill could be attacked as unconstitutional and mentions nothing about weaknesses in those attacks, and then ends with:
If this sounds far-fetched, consider another recent case in which the smart money doubted there were five votes to intervene in a politicized controversy involving technical procedures. A case in which five justices may have perceived that long-established rules were being gamed for purely partisan advantage.
You might have heard of it: Bush v. Gore.
It is nothing near an objective analysis. It is not a real analysis of the ways the bill could be attacked, because a real analysis would mention the incredible weaknesses of many of those attacks, and wouldn't delve into the fantasy of a federal amendment preventing the government from regulating health insurance.

He definitely does interject his opinion, especially in the way he examines the Slaughterhouse rule-- he doesn't mention, for example, that Public Citizen v. United States District Court for the District of Columbia would indicate the bill wasn't even challengeable.
This is Volokh on it, who himself is rather partisan:
[Link: volokh.com...]This part about general welfare's limitations by common good is farcical; like the US doesn't already provide benefits to individual states with every spending bill.
But the Dem leadership is fixing that part or attempting to, perhaps it has substance after all? Gosh I guess they got it wrong...

What I'm saying is that his analysis does not at all analyze the attacks in terms of how strong they are, which would be necessary for any credible analysis.

Let me add one to the short list:
Three doctors from three different countries were discussing the success stories of the medical systems of their respective countries.
The doctor from Germany said they transplanted the arm of a man from Bremen to a surgeon in Berlin, and within six months the surgeon was working again.
The doctor from France said they were able to transplant the hand from someone in Lyon to a violinist in Paris, and within three months he was playing the violin.
The American doctor said they transplanted an asshole from Chicago to Washington, DC, and now no one is working.
OK, that's not true. The German was from Hamm, not Bremen.

I disagree that it's a 'somewhat' objective analysis. It's not at all objective.
Where does he say that the constitutional amendment is unlikely? I can't find it.
He does so in this section:
Although the first three of the potential constitutional challenges to health-care reform have a sound basis in the text of the Constitution, and no Supreme Court precedents clearly bar their success, the smart money says there won't be five votes to thwart the popular will to enact comprehensive health insurance reform.
Although not explicit since the constitutional con is fourth or fifth item iirc it's implicit.

Well, here's one point of common ground: we can take pride in being Americans (those of us who are in fact Americans, that is), watching this. In many another country, the unleashing of such populist passions would be a harbinger of civil war. But, we are better than that.

How is it implicit? Because you say so? A constitutional convention doesn't involve any vote by the justices whatsoever, so the five votes don't apply. So, that paragraph cannot at all apply to the idea of the amendment.

Well, they do read one book all the time, but sadly they misunderstand that one too.
That's because they're relying on a bad translation (the KJV) and a bunch of televangelists and nutjobs to tell them how to interpret it all.
There are many, many things that could be said about the Catholic Church, but the Jesuit and Holy Cross priests who taught me how to critically read and interpret the Bible were good at their jobs. I'll always appreciate that.

We need to , over time, embrace parts of the bill and make it ours by tweaking it (but not by screaming and chopping off sections of it). Our best chance to keep this thing contained is to accept it and commit our selves to the roles of wise stewards of it.

Some democrats would have flipped if it looked like falling - they ran away to cover their electoral butts.
A few stayed on with the "abortion on demand" republican schtick.
And some were just hopeless cases.

No shit. I have no problem with abortion - it is a very personal decision. I have no right to tell others what to do.
It's not that I have a problem with abortion being legal...but I do have a problem paying for someone else's...legal sure, taxpayer subsidized, I can't say I'm thrilled with

Seriously?
She had a super majority and blew it. She had years to put this bill together and this is what we got. She is the Speaker of the House, not speaker of the Democratic Party in the House.
If she were my employee she would not receive a favorable performance review.
Uhh, wouldn't that be Harry Reid in the Senate that you are talking about? I don't recall anything about Dems having a "super majority" in the House of Representitives...

Oh, come on SFZ, surely the facist Dems cannot pass a bill that completely Socializes all medical care in America and not include tax payer paid for and government encouraged abortions? You just know it has to be there somewhere in the fine print, just like the euthanasia provisions for everyone old enough to qualify for social security payments.

I just turned off the TV, angrily, when hearing the last word from the party of No was "save the children".
Sorry, but from my perspective the Republicans have NEVER tried to reform health care, or control the insurance for profit industry and I have heard nothing from them this past year except fear mongering and negative spin as if "starting from scratch" means squat.
I don't know what is good or bad in this bill, but I don't believe a word I hear about it from Republicans any more.
I do know however that nobody dies in the streets in the USA if they can get to a hospital and nobody is denied care if they don't have cash, and millions of people, rightly or wrongly, think we have socialized medicine in this country and take it for granted. I see it up close and personal.
I have yet to hear anyone, on TV or elsewhere, explain why these "uninsured" millions aren't dying like flies all around us, and what the effect on finances will be when they suddenly become "insured" and continue to get the same care they now have.
And with that rant, I'm going to sleep it off.
Goodnight.

Whatever, I don't give a shit. Fuck 'em. They're in power, they can do whatever they want.
The Senate bill that the House has now also passed specifically excludes spending public money on elective abortions. There is also a completely separate Federal law that is still in force that also does so, nothing was changed tonight on that.
Stupak decided to get his fifteen minutes of fame by claiming that somehow the Senate version of the bill would spend federal tax dollars on elective abortions. He lied, period, he was grandstanding so that now his name is a recognizable by almost everyone in America.
Obama gave him the executive order that does absolutely nothing and cost him nothing, he probably didn't even have to think about it for more than half a second. It lets Stupak say publicly that he won his anti-abortion stance and satisfy the pro-lifer contingent, along with all the free publicity.
Everybody wins, except for those mislead enough to still believe that this bill will somehow provide federal funding for elective abortions anytime Obama decides to change his mind about the executive order.
Gahh, the whole thing was cynical and sickening political theater. :(

Perhaps they'll qualify also for preventive care and maybe even aftercare instead of getting patched up and sent home from the ER with the advice to see their primary care doctor and an expensive prescription or two to fill, neither of which they can do at present because they're not, umm, insured.
