Racial slurs, gas lines cut, death threats against children, and now this: Coffin placed on Carnahan’s lawn.

A coffin was placed on a Missouri Democrat’s lawn, another in a string of incidents against lawmakers after their vote Sunday on a health care overhaul.

Rep. Russ Carnahan (D-Mo.) had a coffin placed “near his home,” a spokesman said Wednesday evening.

I hope they included robust mental health care provisions in the reform package. Looks like the wingnuts are in need of fast and dire treatment.

1. Satire!

4. Well, it's Obama's fault for making people so mad.
5. All of the above

Well just remember, threatening people's lives for wanting everyone to have affordable health care is the only logical thing to do.

It is time for the Dems to get up and each and everyone of them make a point that the continual lies of the GOP, fear mongering of the GOP and madness making of the GOP have created this mess. The GOP needs to be horse whipped over this publicly and called to shame for their lioes before someone gets hurt.

However, the odds of the Dems having that kind of spine are near zero.

Classy Republican Senator scuttles Armed Services Hearing

WASHINGTON — With a few simple words – "I would have to object" -- Republican U.S. Sen. Richard Burr of North Carolina derailed a Senate Armed Services hearing today in which generals had traveled from Korea and Hawaii to testify about the Pentagon's needs for the next year.

Burr, joining his GOP colleagues' outrage at the new health reform law, used an obscure Senate rule to prevent the Armed Services committee from meeting this afternoon – even though he said he personally wanted the hearing to occur.

Republicans are angry over the signing Tuesday of the health reform law that President Barack Obama and Democrats have been working toward for the past year.

They have pledged to "repeal and replace" the law, as their slogan goes, and GOP House members are calling on state attorneys general to file lawsuits challenging the law's constitutionality.

In the meantime, Republicans are using parliamentary tactics to slow the Senate's workings, and Burr's action put him in the midst of the dust-up. He is running for re-election and has said he'll make repealing the health overhaul a central tenet of his platform.

Wednesday was the second day Republican senators have blocked committees from conducting afternoon hearings.

re: #8 Varek Raith

Well, just to stay recent, in addition to the all the Civil Rights stuff in the 50s and 60s, abortion bombings in the 90s, which included the Olympics in Atlanta, we have the glaring example of the bombing of the Federal building in Oklahoma by Timothy McVeigh. That really took the wind out of a lot of the militia movement back then, but they had the same kind of generalize paranoid anger towards Clinton. So the violence was worse, but nationally this is pretty bad, and I wouldn't be surprised to see people get killed because there are so many people fanning the flames.

If you believe this, you're a blind partisan. The left during the Bush admin. wasn't calling for armed revolution or threatening members of Congress or shouting racial epithets at them.

As for the 60's, the left at least had the excuses of being young, not wanting to get blown up in Nam, and fighting racial prejudice. What excuse do the tea partiers have other than anger over losing an election?

It is time for the Dems to get up and each and everyone of them make a point that the continual lies of the GOP, fear mongering of the GOP and madness making of the GOP have created this mess. The GOP needs to be horse whipped over this publicly and called to shame for their lies before someone gets hurt.

However, the odds of the Dems having that kind of spine are near zero.

I could be wrong, but I think the Dems will do more or less what you're saying. Not because they have spines necessarily, but because it's in their political self-interest.

Just to repost:

Ummm for the love of G-d.

No one is denying the existence of left wing freakazoids or that some of them are dangerous and violent.

However, it gets old, really old, to hear them dragged out of the boogy man cellar every single time a right wing freakazoid gets brought up.

First off, even if the far left nuts were a fraction as organized, violent or broadly supported as the right wing nuts are, it would not excuse the actions of the wingnuts. The existence of Charles Manson (Left wing freak) does not mitigate the crimes of Timothy McVeigh (right wing freak, who killed many more people). If a man has his leg broken, the existence of someone else's broken arm does not mitigate the pain he feels or help knit his bones.

It is utterly stupid to bring up. At best it is like crying mommy, but he got to steal a cookie, why can't I?

But beyond this, let's get real.

There are leftwing freaks. No two ways. However, there are nut enough of them to make a tea party. They do not have a major national party (the GOP) feeding them red meat, and they do not have Fox, Rush, Hannity, Beck, Coulter, Malkin, The Harpy, RSM, etc... constantly whipping them into a lather. They do not in general own guns or talk of secession. They do not believe that Jesus wants them to retake America from socialists and brown people.

So even if somehow, the existence of one bad thing could mitigate the effects of another bad thing, it is still stupid to bring up, because the right is far, far more dangerous.

Because Glenn Beck has a big blackboard of doom and at some point this year we went from God to Socialism. Obama used some uber secret formula involving health care reform, the census and tiddly winks.

Plus the census will be used for those FEMA re-education camps also and then some.

131 Jaerik  Wed, Mar 24, 2010 10:00:58pm

I don't get this. I'm starting to agree more with Frum. I'm not wild about this bill. But this should have been a victory for Republicans, not a defeat.

This bill is significantly less socialist than Obama and Democrats promised during their campaigns. Liberals wanted single payer. They didn't get it, and got beaten back to the public option. They didn't get that either, and got beaten back to private mandates. (Which was originally a Republican idea.) Shouldn't that be seen as a win?

Originally it was going to be trillions and not be paid for in the slightest. It got beaten back to billions. Then it was beaten back to actually cutting the deficit, even if the CBO numbers were a bit sketchy. And a big factor in how they accomplished that was by trimming waste in Medicare. Something Republicans have campaigned on for decades. Should that be seen as a win?

I could go on. How about the provision in the bill that forces Congressmen to use insurance bought from the new exchanges? A Republican talking point that they caved on. How about the ability for states to opt out of the private mandate? (You know, the part these lawsuit-happy attorney generals evidently never read.) Another Republican talking point they caved on. I could go on, to over 200 similar Republican amendments they were forced to adopt.

If Republicans had played their cards right, they could be touting these as major wins. Especially for a party so strongly in the minority. "Look at how effectively we stopped this from being even worse. We're good at this. You should vote for us."

But no. By saying that Obama was Satan incarnate, and the passage of this bill would destroy the entire country and spark World War III, they screwed themselves, because you can't negotiate with Hitler. (Even when you did. Successfully.) By characterizing it as a totalitarian scheme worthy of armed insurrection, they've left themselves nowhere left to go. They've essentially castrated their own elected representatives. As Charles puts it, their entire party policy, straight through to the floor of Congress, has officially become hijacked by the wackos.

Well said. As someone who favoured stronger "more liberal" health insurance reform, the republicans (and perhaps the health care lobby etc) did an amazing job in getting the bill tailored down to its least radical incarnation. The saddest part to me is that it seems that this isn't a lesson learned; there will be even less "negotiation" in the future if Mccain and other are serious when they say this means they wont work with the democrats for the rest of the year.

Japan Pledges To Halt Production Of Weirdo Porn That Makes People Puke

[Link: www.theonion.com...]

"We honestly had no idea people did not enjoy this stuff," said Cultural Affairs Minister Kazuhiro Nakai, expressing regret for the thousands of hours of bondage porn, rape porn, utensil-rape porn, food-rape porn, frozen-food-rape porn, vomit-enema porn, elder-care-coma-patient-rape porn, and the kind of a porn in which a nubile youth is kidnapped, stripped, tied down in a wading pool and raped. "We are deeply ashamed for whatever it is about these films that has made people around the world vomit so vigorously. Please know that the content was only intended to entertain and arouse."

Sources inside the Ministry of Cultural Affairs said Nakai, shocked by the recent development, is seeking to recall many of the products, including an estimated 27 million copies of select bukkake (splash), gokkun (gulp), and tamakeri (testicle-kicking) videos.

Officials have already met with leaders of Japan's $5.5 billion adult entertainment industry in an attempt to develop regulations that conform to some small standard of basic human decency. Attending the talks were the heads of several major studios, including WoundSexerCo, Maid Molest Universal, Innocent Schoolgirl Despoil Youngest Daughter Lips Plunder Incest Distribution, and Sunrise-Rape-Rape-Nihon.

The proposed new measures include a 50 percent reduction in live-eel anal insertions, and a requirement that portrayals of group sex involving seven or more individuals feature at least four human participants. Also under consideration is a zero-tolerance policy covering all "prurient uses" of colostomy bags.

Here's an interesting little story about how that horrible, freedom-and-country killing part of health reform, was perfectly acceptable to some Republicans, while Obama was against the idea in 2008. Funny, isn't it?

It's frickin common sense. We don't like insurance practices like rescission and pre-existing conditions. However, if we ban those practices with nothing else, there will be no such thing as health insurance, because everyone will simply wait until they're sick to buy coverage. Therefore, we need to provide a mandate so that there will actually be insurance companies to pay for medical treatment. Seriously, this is what all these people think is the DEATH OF AMERICA?

re: #14 Varek Raith

In what way(s)?

Well, in some ways worse. We had actual domestic terrorism, with the Weather Underground killing people. William Ayers may be popular now, but he was a leader in an organization that committed terrorist murders.

We had riots that went on for days, demonstrations with multiple fatalities, demonstrators killing cops, and soldiers killing demonstrators (not the same demonstration.) It kind of got out of hand, shall we say.

The war that was the backdrop to this unrest at home was a bigger war. It cost more relative to our means, and it cost a lot more in lives. And because our casus belli was an incident that never actually happened, people were even more suspicious about motives than they are this time.

This health care bill is unpopular in some circles, popular in others, and nobody knows how it will work out. Indeed, hardly anyone even knows what's really in it. The words may have gone before Congress, but the implications of those words are still obscure.

But it's not a war, and we've not gone to actually shooting and burning each other to death to make our points. Killing is dramatic and some people seem to think that it makes a statement. It does:

I'm a moral monster and my side ought to lose because it cheats.

So going from that assumption, "there is obviously something in the health care bill that makes this easier to happen."

" I don't know exactly, I just know it's there. I don't really understand all that law talk anyways and even if I did they've coded it in so good that it's being hidden from normal people. That's what they do you know. I just know in my heart that it's there though. "

HAVE YOU STOPPED BEATING YOUR WIFE??

I always loved that. Reminds me of an LBJ anecdote that Hunter S. Thompson wrote about.

Back in 1948, during his first race for the U.S. Senate, Lyndon Johnson was running about ten points behind, with only nine days to go. He was sunk in despair. He was desperate. And it was just before noon on a Monday, they say, when he called his equally depressed campaign manager and instructed him to call a press conference for just before lunch on a slow news day and accuse his high-riding opponent, a pig farmer, of having routine carnal knowledge of his barnyard sows, despite the pleas of his wife and children.

His campaign manager was shocked. "We can't say that, Lyndon," he supposedly said. "You know it's not true."

"Of course it's not true!" Johnson barked at him. "But let's make the bastard deny it!"

"And the last one tore a picture
From the pornographic page
But all the pleasure points attacking
All the looks of love were staged
And its a lie that you've been giving
It just hurts you everyday
So why should I lay here naked
When its just too far away
From anything we could call loving
Any love worth living for
So I'll sleep out in the gutter
You can sleep here on the floor
And when I wake up in the morning
I won't forget to lock the door
Because with a match that's mean and some gasoline
You won't see me anymore"

That's my clever way of saying I'm out.

At least I am not being vulgar/derogatory to you and calling you cheap names. A clever way of saying "I'm out" is "I will light you on fire"?

I wouldn't take it, because 14% is emergency territory and the government will take desperate measures to head that off, and if they can't stop it, they'll fudge the numbers and publish lower unemployment figures.

The government wouldn't fudge the numbers, you say? Nixon ordered "adjustments" to the computation of inflation. It got to where the nightly news was airing its own inflation numbers, and comparing and contrasting them with the official figures.

Nixon had more to answer for at the bar of history than just Watergate.

it's y a relative statistic. That is the important nut.

It's currently 10.4, right?

So if it's 14%, it's gone up, because of HCR, it's assumed.

Relative to what it is now, will it go up? Or down? That's the bet.

The raw number is not important, the relative unemployment is what's important. It's whether HCR has a negative effect on unemployment.

Assuming this isn't bunko, what happens if the effects you described are OFFSET by other businesses being able to hire? This isn't a one way street.

The tax break policies while well meaning--and really all lib policies mean well--have sharp cutoffs for phasing in.

As a quick example, say a small business has opted not to offer health insurance--the new legislation does not burden that business with that obligation until they hit the magic number of 50. Their employees buy subsidized insurance through the exchange. Now, when a small business hits their 50th employee, they will be subjected to a tax of 20 employees times $2000 or an additional tax of $40,000 to add one employee.

There won't be as much harm done to larger businesses that are already big and already can afford to offer health insurance. Since small businesses run an thin margins typically, the 50th employee is really hard to add unless you are leaping past that point by adding a bunch of staff due to landing some large contract.

277, 291, and 311 all called me a lurking downdinging troll, and called someone my friends b/c I agreed w/a few things someone said.

Red

Thats ok, the room gets protective (and slightly paranoid) when trolls are loose, don't take it personally.

If you state your own genuine opinion in your own words rather than spouting talking points copied from certain sites and media pundits people will respect that and cease that behavior. It is not a crime to be on the right here, although lately it is tough to get many updings for it. ;)

I'm telling ya, this bill wouldn't have been allowed to pass if it was a fait accompli that it would half-again raise unemployment. Is it a giveaway to insurance companies? yes. Is it inefficient compared to what could have passed? yes. Is it an improvement? HELL YES. Will it raise unemployment? I do not believe that it will, I believe it will lower it.

re: #424 WindUpBird

it's y a relative statistic.

It's hard to say what the effect of the legislation will be. I figured the costs for the company I work at, and I figure we'll have to lay off 3% of our staff if we cannot pass on the additional costs. Maybe we can pass those costs on, but the economy is weak. It's hard to get any price increases these days, let alone 3%.

Now there will be many IRS jobs created--probably some tax preparer jobs as well. So that might offset things some :)

Well I left sword girl off the list because that would be a little too much. But yes, I have been a competitive fencer and kendo enthusiast for some time.

And a woman who truly knows the way to my heart knows the Oakenshott classifications :)

Awesome. I've been wanting to get into kendo. Perhaps when finances permit, I will.

It is much more fun than the stylized whipping fest that western fencing has become because of soft electrical blades.

The bill is 2300 + pages...these are 13 taxes and fees off the top to go into effect over time. You tell me what you would do as a business owner who is strapped for cash and have a choice to downsize?

It's real and it's coming.

I swear, if I hear one more time how long the bill is, no, it's not a bill anymore, it's law. We've all had time to read it. The people who voted on it read it, no matter how many times people want to say they didn't. Enough! It belittles any argument you make when you talk about how many pages were involved.
