Speaking of Regina, Saskatchewan in this case:
Regina profs pan free tuition for soldiers' kids
A scholarship program for the children of dead soldiers is raising questions among some professors at the University of Regina.
They say they're concerned about Project Hero, a program that pays the tuition of students who have had a parent die while on military duty for Canada.
More than 80 universities and colleges in Canada have committed to the project, which pays for four years of tuition, plus $1,000 for books.
U of R president Vianne Timmons announced two weeks ago the university would provide the scholarship, but that has led to a campus controversy.
Sixteen professors have signed a letter to Timmons stating the program glorifies military action and they don't want their school to be part of it.
Among those with concerns is Jeffrey Webber, who teaches political science and who says the name of the program celebrates military intervention abroad.
"We think this is a glorification of the Afghan effort," he said.
Excuse me, asshole, this is not about your perception of political symbolism and the dialectic of imperialism or whatever. It is about children, about 200 of them so far, who have lost a parent through no fault of their own, but through acts of public policy.
8 | Our Precious Bodily Fluids Thu, Mar 25, 2010 9:32:57pm |
Hmm. Absent the video, this seems like a watered-down Philip Glass / Bjork collaboration.
However, I realize I'm an idiot and will therefore give it several more chances.

Once again Regina has shown amazing artistic virtuosity, The visuals are great, as usual, but her lyrics speak to a level of concern and criticism that is mature and maturing. I can't wait to get her new album. Thank you Charles.
12 | albusteve Thu, Mar 25, 2010 9:38:37pm |
she seems pretty average to me as a vocalist...kinda talking the lyrics in a monotone...not quite...I don't hear much range or any instrumental quality to her voice, but what do I know
13 | Irenicum Thu, Mar 25, 2010 9:41:53pm |
For me Regina is more important as a lyricist than as a vocalist. I love her vocals mind you, but I'm much more wowed by the content of her lyrics. She's asking some pretty deep questions. I can respect that.

She is pretty sloppy when it comes to pitch but that's part of the appeal. Beat's the hell out of Lady Gaga autopitched stuff and has a certain punk/garage band thing. It's a real voice, glorious in all imperfection. Her accent also helps the quirky appeal.

You know. Guys like this Jeffrey Webber (still) burn me up. I don't see how a scholarship in these soldiers names glorifies war. This cretin even goes as far as comparing these war dead to "workplace accidents." No doubt it would be easy to detect hypocrisy on his part and he more than likely does not see the death of one of his idol, Che Guevara, a result of workplace accident.
Here's Jeffrey Webbers CV if you will:
After the debt crisis of the 1980s and the parallel right-wing neoliberal assault across Latin America, roughly the last decade witnessed resurgence in leftist movements and governments in the region, says Webber. As imperial wars advanced in other areas of the world, Latin America served as a beacon of hope, a site of resistance.
"Latin American peasant, worker and indigenous radicalism placed revolution back in the vocabulary of leftists across the planet. At the same time, centre-left regimes assumed power in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Brazil, and elsewhere, only to perpetuate the neoliberal capitalist projects that preceded them. The possibilities and limitations of the Hugo Chávez and Evo Morales governments in Venezuela and Bolivia respectively are raising fundamental questions concerning the plausibility and character of advancing a twenty-first-century socialism against the ravages of global capitalism..."
From this we can see he is yet another admirer of the democratically elected dictator of Venezuela. Here we can see a review of Hugo's military career. The military aspirations of Mr. Chavez is no secret including recent arms agreements with Russia. I need not say anything about Mr. Chavez's alignment with the totalitarian Ahmadinejad -- a man intent on a nuclear Iran. We should ask Mr. Webber to comment on these associations and characteristics of one of his revolutionary heroes, Hugo Chavez.
Onto Jeffrey Webber's blurb at the University of Regina website:
Jeffery R. Webber began teaching at the University of Regina in the Fall of 2009. He spent the last several years splitting time between Canada, Europe, and various countries in Latin America. His main focus has been Bolivia, but he is now expanding his research into the rest of the Latin America. A revised version of his doctoral dissertation will be published as Red October: Left-Indigenous Struggles in Modern Bolivia (Brill Academic Publishers, 2010). In addition, he is currently at work on four major projects: a new book manuscript, Rebellion to Reform in Bolivia: Indigenous Liberation and Class Struggle under Evo Morales (Haymarket Books, 2010); a collective volume on the new Latin American Left, co-edited with historian Barry Carr (Rowman and Littlefield, 2010); a Spanish-to-English translation of Stefan Gandler's major text, Marxismo Crítico en México, or, Critical Marxism in Mexico; and, finally, early research preparations for an eventual book manuscript, Canada in the Americas: Imperialism and Resistance in the Age of Neoliberalism, to be co-authored with Todd Gordon. Webber is also an active member on the editorial boards of Historical Materialism, Latin American Perspectives, and New Socialist.
Well, that says it all then.

re: #27 Gus 802
Wanted to add that when people like Jeffrey Webber make a stand against the military or wars a little alarm goes off inside my heard. They're not really against wars or the military. They're just against war and military men that are not on "their side." I'm sure Mr. Webber would welcome an armed struggle against the "imperialist forces" he sees dancing inside his head. When Mr. Webber speaks highly of Hugo Chavez he is also speaking highly of a man with a rather extensive military record. He is also speaking highly of a man that support one of the most destabilizing regimes in the Middle East and one that could lead to a nuclear confrontation in the future.

Anything's possible. But usually I see guys like Webber as posers or more roughly, bullshit artists. Like a lot of people they practice a great deal of self-censorship. That would include his denial of an armed military struggle that it required to create the communist state in China by way of Mao who is in fact studied at military institutions and is considered one of the great military strategists. There are other military historical examples with regards to this.

Oh, I'm sure he doesn't. I'm just struck by how someone in the case of Webber who seems to be a strong proponent of Marxist "struggles" can at the same time claim to be anti-militarist. I'm sure he accepts it in his mind but will not speak much of the military aspect of Marxism in public.

Russian bombers 'intercepted in British airspace'
London, England (CNN) -- Rare photos of Russian strategic bomber jets purportedly intercepted in British airspace show Moscow's war machine is becoming increasingly bold, analysts said Thursday as Russia denied any territorial violations.Britain's Ministry of Defence released images it said were taken earlier this month of two Russian Tu-160 bombers -- known as Blackjacks by NATO forces -- as they entered UK airspace near the Outer Hebrides islands off Scotland's northwest coast.
It said the March 10 incident, which resulted in crystal clear images of the planes against clear blue skies and a dramatic sunset, was one of many intercepts carried out by British Royal Air Force crews in just over 12 months.
"This is not an unusual incident, and many people may be surprised to know that our crews have successfully scrambled to intercept Russian aircraft on more than 20 occasions since the start of 2009," Wing Cdr. Mark Gorringe, of the RAF's 111 Squadron, said in a statement.

This kind of thing is one reason I am so contemptuous of neo-McCarthyites like Beck and Coulter. It is just ridiculous to look for red plotters and clandestine agents when outright communists and their fellow travelers are right there in our faces all the time. Other than Soviet espionage, which is a different issue and not usually the work of ideologues anyway, there has never been anything secret or hidden about communist agitation and propaganda in the west.

As in how can he be against University of Regina scholarships for the children of fallen soldiers of the Afghanistan War claiming that it would glorify war. Juxtaposing this with the military history of Marxism, Mao, Stalin, Guervara, Castro, and indeed Hugo Chavez who himself was in the Venezuelan army from 1975–1992 and this includes intentions of a military coup. Adding to this we also have the strong militarism of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. As I already pointed out, Webber holds up Chavez in high esteem.

I posted that story earlier today, but thanks for reposting it. If anyone here hasn't seen it, be sure to check it out. It has some truly excellent photos of the TU-160. It's a fine looking warplane, though of course it's not on our side. But in terms of performance, its even better than our B1B.

Gus, how can you fail to understand the distinction between indigenous people engaged in a struggle for liberation (yay!) and the brutal drones of the imperialist armies of conquest (well, ICK)?

I have no time to link, but just google

Blue Oyster Cult: Black Blade
When Michael Moorcock has a hand in your album, the results are usually rad :D

re: #33 Bubblehead II
I have one Tori Amos CD (Under The Pink). Never could get into her, Enya on the other hand.
Tori's first five albums are her best, IMO. She's been a bit more hit and miss lately, but you really can't go wrong with Little Earthquakes, Under the Pink, Boys for Pele, From the Choirgirl Hotel, and To Venus and Back.
Scarlet's Walk is also good too. She wrote the bulk of it when she was touring in the aftermath of 9/11, and it's a sort of lyrical cross-country road trip.

Dennis Hopper's cancer is terminal: lawyer
(AFP) – 6 hours ago
LOS ANGELES — Famed US actor Dennis Hopper, who starred in such cinematic classics as "Easy Rider" and "Apocalypse Now," is dying of cancer, his lawyer said in court documents out Thursday.
Attorney Joseph Mannis said that Hopper was too weak to be questioned by his wife's attorney in a bitter ongoing divorce settlement, according to court documents filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday and obtained by KTLA television Thursday.
However Hopper, 73, will still attend a ceremony in his honor for a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The court filing said his physician David Agus found that Hopper weighs less than 100 pounds (45 kg) as he battles prostate cancer.

ah, the Eric breakup. She laid his memory at the foot of Pele.
Actually, I think a fair bit of that album is about Trent Reznor as well, especially this song:

Just so you know, It is going to take a bit to review those links. Slow computer and it likes to take its time. But so far I like what I am hearing.
Perhaps I was hasty in my decision and have missed out.
/Like that has never happened before
Done. I liked some of what I heard. But overall, I am not impressed. Enya has more energy.
No accounting for taste I guess

Not just that. The whole bit about a "belle" dragging her foot gives it away too, since it's a direct lyrical reference to the "belle from New Orleans" in Blood Roses. Trent lives in NOLA, or at least would have lived there at the time that she wrote the album.

The best story evah about Hopper is one I heard years ago. I don't know if it's true or not.
Someone told him that if you made a circle of dynamite charges properly set to all go off at the same time and sat in the exact center, the forces would cancel each other out and you would emerge unscathed.
So he tried it, and found out it was true.
No greedy-ass ex-wife is going to beat him as long as he's still breathing.

Don't think I would ever try to find out if that circle of dynamite trick would work.
It's too bad about Hopper and the background story regarding his wife and the divorce. I couldn't imagine having to be on my death bed having to deal that.

Dennis Hopper reads a poem on The Johnny Cash Show
[Video]"If" by Rudyard Kipling
I hate that poem as much as I hate Glenn Beck, because it's been overquoted more than any other except maybe Yeats's "The Second Coming", mostly by imbeciles whose hands Kipling and Yeats would scorn to shake.
Yet I liked that rendition.
