Fantastic Four #48, Debut of the Silver Surfer

Lifestyle • Views: 4,889

Fantastic Four #48, released in March 1966, marked the debut of one of Marvel Comics’ most popular characters, the Silver Surfer. Following the photo is an interesting story about this issue from the Silver Surfer’s Wikipedia page.

The Lizard Collection’s copy of this book has some minor flaws on the cover, but the interior is nearly perfect; the inks are still bright, and the paper still has that Marvel Comics off-white color, with only very slight yellowing.

The Silver Surfer debuted as an unplanned addition to the superhero-team comic Fantastic Four #48 (March 1966). The comic’s writer-editor, Stan Lee, and its penciller and co-plotter, Jack Kirby, had by the mid-1960s developed using a three-collaborative technique known as the “Marvel Method”: the two would discuss story ideas, Kirby would work from a brief synopsis to draw the individual scenes and plot details, and Lee would finally add the dialog and captions. When Kirby turned in his pencil art for the story, he included a new character he and Lee had not discussed. As Lee recalled in 1995, “There, in the middle of the story we had so carefully worked out, was a nut on some sort of flying surfboard”. He later expanded on this, recalling, “I thought, ‘Jack, this time you’ve gone too far’”. Kirby explained that the story’s agreed-upon antagonist, a god-like cosmic predator of planets named Galactus should have some sort of herald, and that he created the surfboard “because I’m tired of drawing spaceships!” Taken by the noble features of the new character, who turned on his master to help defend Earth, Lee overcame his initial skepticism and began adding characterization. The Silver Surfer soon became a key part of the unfolding story.

All these vintage comics you’re displaying lately brings me back to my youth

My cousin, a HUGE Superman fan ( and 4 years older than me) would sit in the middle of the floor with his stack of new ones in sequence. Wouldn’t let anyone touch any of them until he had read every last one

‘Michael, how about you give me the one on the bottom/ You won’t be getting to that one till tomorrow.”
“NO”
“Well then, how about you give me the one you just read?”
“NO”

Damn, that is quite the collection you have there. I was a big buyer of all the army comics in the late 60s, Sgt. Rock, the Haunted Tank(IIRC) sure wish I had those now. Might pay for one of the boys college!

The FF, one of my favorites. Most of mine were from the early 70’s though, and I think they were all given away when I left for college.

Too bad the recent movie FF was so poor.

Dragging in a topic from downstairs…

Immigration: the GOP candidates for California Gov. have opinion pieces in the paper today. Here is front runner Meg Whitman’s:

Meg Whitman: immigration reform, with respect

It’s an issue vital to California, but we must debate it without becoming divisive.

[…]

While I am a strong proponent of legal immigration, I am 100% opposed to granting amnesty to immigrants who entered the country illegally. It is the wrong policy for California, it is the wrong policy for America, and it is grossly unfair to those immigrants who have followed the law to obtain legal status.

[…]

I have been criticized for opposing Proposition 187, which was on the California ballot in 1994. It is true that I am opposed to cutting off public education and healthcare services to immigrant children. I do not believe that kids should be punished for the sins of their parents

[…]

Apparently from the comments, the “base” does not approve:

Thanks Meg, I now know, 100% that I will not vote for you.
cjhanely (03/27/2010, 7:14 PM )

-

Meg - Between your position on illegals and your praise for VAN JONES - THE COMMUNIST - you do not have my vote!
nujohn53 (03/27/2010, 7:09 PM )

-

I had high hopes for Meg Whitman, but I have a problem with this column because she basically accuses one side of racism—three times. If she felt that racism existed (true everywhere) and that it was substantial in political terms (not true), she could have denounced racism without pointing fingers. That was very immature and irresponsible of her. What does she think motivates the Americanized people who are also against folks from their native countries coming here illegally? She needs to get serious and stop grandstanding at the expense of constituents.
WM55 (03/27/2010, 6:01 PM )

[gasp! “racism” in the immigration debate - who could have guessed?]

-

Whitman seems to be just another McCain-style RINO, with perhaps more understanding of economics. I want to see the roster of governors and the
halls of Capitol Hill, as well as state legislatures, filled with true Conservatives, not panderers to PC-ism and to assorted militant minorities. We need to beef up both e-verify AND our physical borders, enforce English (fire employees who speak any other language on the job, get rid of multilingual forms, ballots and voice menus); millions will self-deport, AND millions will be actively deported. Our borders, language and culture need to, and will be, preserved and enforced. A great place to begin is at treasonous immigration rallies. Police at all levels need to be authorized to inquire as to legal US status of any and all persons routinely apprehended (e.g. by traffic cops). Also deport that illegal Auntie of the African Socialist tyrant (the America-hating, liberty hating statist in the ‘W’H). And states must fight for the 10th amendment and against Washington tyranny by him and his Chicago-mobster minions and occupation government. And THAT is also the type of governor we need here! otherwise, Meg, you and your ilk will soon be presiding over a failed state, its golden brand in tatters. Good luck with your ‘Latinos with shared values’ when the actual movers and shakers of CA move their businesses and selves elsewhere.
Occidentalus (03/27/2010, 3:35 PM )
[Well, well, perhaps there is racism in the immigration debate?]

-

Meg is pandering to Hispanics. I say no to Meg. She didn’t even vote, and now, she’s running for Governor? Consider Steve’s strong approach to illegal aliens; compare it to Meg’s politically correct balderdash. Believe in Steve; vote for Steve.

They kicked ROTC off campus during the Vietnam War, and kept them off due to DADT. There’s been buzz in the news recently that, with the pending repeal of DADT, the military may finally be maturing into good enough folks to grace the campuses of the Ivy League again.

We kicked that around here the other day.

The problem with sand deposits near the coast is that they shift… indeed, without rivers to refresh the supply of small particles at the ocean’s edge the deposits do wash away.

Likely the loss of the island is simply the shifting of material around that part of coastline. Now, that itself may be due to climate change… but the causality is nebulous.

Yet this issue is being played in the denial-o-sphere as some massive evidence that climatologists have made yet another (supposedly) mistake.

It has more to do with poor journalism, and how such changes are phrased, than with actual science.

Since the new LGF Cookbook is about to make its debut, I’ve come up with an idea for a companion volume.

The LGF Book of Snarky Cocktails.

I already created one on the last thread. Lizards are hereby invited to send their contributions to Reine (with your permission, of course, My Queen!). They can be anything at all, named after anyone at all, but must contain a healthy dash of ridicule to be considered for publication.

Perhaps we can even persuade the estimable Jaunte to donate his creative talents for another cover.

Here’s something to get you started. (Warning: don’t have too many of these at one go, or you could find yourself suddenly unable to hold up your end of a debate. Or even get it up to begin with.)

So, without further ado, I present:

The Defenseman

Two measures of milksop juice.
Three measures of hundred-proof, distilled cowardice.
Shaking and quaking, no stirring, please.
Top with a dash of of Amaretto, for that hint of cyanide, and garnish with a small, wrinkled cocktail pickle.

Note: Best served with flaccid little wieners and French mustard.

Reine and Jaunte have agreed to act as editor and art director, respectively.

Your input, Lizards, is hereby mockingly solicited!

The current below-the-fold ad on LGF tells me that “Anne Hathaway is a geek” - and invites me to click through for more information.

My only problem is, I can’t make out whether the Anne Hathaway in question is the current bimbo-of-the-nanosecond, or Shakespeare’s wife.

I would gladly click through if I thought they were talking about the latter. The opportunity to cuckold the Bard with geekism, even if it involved dangerous butterfly-cataclysm paradoxes, would be too good to pass up.

I just thought of a funny TV segment involving a Jindo dog, that I saw on Korean TV during a long bus ride. Doesn’t seem to be online. A Korean store had a jindo in a doghouse out back, which was shared by a duck. The duck was apparently imprinted on the Jindo, because it wouldn’t stray far from it. Placed before two identical dogs, it immediately scurried to “its” dog. It was a cute clip…

133 fire at night  Sat, Mar 27, 2010 9:11:43pm

I was fortunate enough to get a box of old comics passed down to me from my Dad while I was still relatively young (mid 80’s). He gave them to me as a way to encouraging reading. The condition was horrible for most of them, with minor exposure to the elements, and natural deterioration on all the pages with lots of washouts and color bleeds in the inking. But I’ll be damned if they didn’t keep me awake at night with a flashlight, long after I was supposed to be in bed with the lights out.

Something about those older stories seemed so mind blowing for that media at the time. A few years later, as the 90’s spec boom took precedence in flash-over-story with art overriding narrative elements and I fell into that growing trend. I can feel pretty lucky even when looking through the same tattered comics 20+ years later to have been able to appreciate the golden age stuff from Stan and Jack in creativity they produced, along with the foundations they set for decades to come.

I don’t collect Marvel that much anymore having drifted towards DC/Vertigo when picking up titles on occasion, but I’ll always have the memories, and wonder what it was like for my Pops when he read them when they came out. Probably doing the same thing I was, reading old stories up until midnight because they were new and exciting.

re: #103 albusteve

what is it?…where is it and does it have any significance…where does the title of this phenomenal record come from…no body bothered to even look it up I guess…just some trivia

Well, here’s a clue:

U.S. Route 61 is the official designation for a United States highway that runs 1,400 miles (2,300 km) from New Orleans, Louisiana, to the city of Wyoming, Minnesota. The highway generally follows the course of the Mississippi River, and is designated the Great River Road for much of its route. As of 2004, the highway’s northern terminus in Wyoming, Minnesota, is at an intersection with Interstate 35. Prior to 1991, the highway extended north on what is now MN 61 through Duluth, Minnesota to the United States-Canada border near Grand Portage, Minnesota. Its southern terminus in New Orleans is at an intersection with U.S. Route 90 (Tulane Avenue at South Broad Street), in front of the Orleans Parish Criminal Court. The Highway is often called “The Blues Highway,” because of the course it takes from Minnesota and into Louisiana (primarily New Orleans), which is considered the heart of the Blues, as well as Dixieland Jazz.

Last time I had a heart-to-heart with Bob (Shabtai Zisel ben Avraham), he told me it represented his Guthrian exodus from white-bread Duluth to the land of the blues. I believe that along the way he parted the waters of the Mississippi, at least once, at night, while no one was paying attention.

I once hitched my way down 61 from Memphis to the Devil’s Crossroads in Mississippi, back when thumbing was not a federal offense in this country. Tried to sell my soul, but the Devil was closeted with Pat Robertson that afternoon.

In any case the song contains some of his most profound modern Biblical midrashim.

PM Ayad Allawi’s electoral victory could damper Iranian influence.

CAIRO – The surprisingly strong election showing by a secular, nationalist coalition in Iraq has provided a sudden opening for the mostly Sunni Arab world to curtail Iranian influence in Iraq, something that has been a source of serious alarm for the United States and its Arab allies since 2003.

The banner headline in Asharq al-Awsat, an influential newspaper in Saudi Arabia, said it all — “The Awakening of Moderation in Iraq” — offering an immediate endorsement of Iraq’s top vote-getter by the regional Sunni Arab powerhouse.

[jump]

Sunni Arab governments have long kept their distance from Iraq’s postwar governments. They have declined to send full ambassadors — first because of the U.S. occupation, then because of the precarious security and more recently because of their anger over perceived Iranian influence. But they have begun warming toward Iraq, and Allawi’s ascension would likely tip the balance.

Does that fool anybody? Even a web-crawler? If I spell “shit” as “sh*t” or “fuck” as “f**k”, does it make a difference?

If I describe two h*t s*xy b*tches sh*wing their t*ts without the asterisks, does that protect anyone from anything?

It’s a holdover from AOL’s filters. They dropped them pretty quickly for 2 reasons:
1. It doesn’t work. Humans can think faster than algorithms can be programmed and
2. Even with tech advances today, semantics are difficult to deal with. Breast was a “bad” word, so the breast cancer support forum was reduced to talking about hooter cancer

Breasts are not genitals. They are milk-producing elements of the female human body. In animals, they are known quite succinctly [sic!] and unromanticallly as teats (pr. “tits”).

They were never really sexualized until certain cultures demanded they be covered. Hugh Hefner owes his fortune to that relatively recent development.

There was, evolutionarily speaking, a time when males gave milk to offspring alongside the females. Though that’s long gone in the past, what other explanation is there for guys having nipples?

I, like all my fellow cultural anachronists, love nothing better than the sight of a pair of nice, young, high, firm, small-nippled, entreating teats. That still doesn’t make them real genitals - for the view of which I and my fellows will pay any God’s quantity of shiny stones.

What a fun topic to squeeze out the remnants of the night upon!

But did he question why first?

No. He was trying to get the brigade to charge. His ‘reason why’ was that he felt the Cavalry Division had been handled too timidly so far in the Crimean campaign. So he point towards the distant Russian guns and spoke as he did to induce the division CO, Lord Lucan, to send the Light Brigade in (the Heavy Brigade had already been committed and had won its part of the battle).

Right you are, Ken.

I hope your name isn’t really Ken, and you’re thinking I’m clairvoyant.

Just a reference to that goofy MXC show.

Wow, you actually know the military history! That’s never been my forte. I’ve read the poem, but aside from that, they fact that they all died and Florence Nightingale I know nothing about the Crimean war.

They did not all die in that engagement. Though Captain Nolan and much of the brigade was killed, a substantial portion of the unit survived, including its commander Lord Cardigan.

re: #224 Cato the Elder

This is scientifically wrong. The real reason males have nipples is that mammalian development starts out with a default female, and then converts to male partway through gestation if the genes say male.

The development of female parts is modified but not outright nixed.

Also, in humans, nipples serve as secondary erogenous zones.

A) No there wasn’t.

B) It’s an artifact of natal development.

as lostlakehiker said.

I stand corrected. But boobies are still not genitals.

Maureen Dowd: Time For A Female Pope

Hmmm… a female Pope.

The question is, would Cato kiss her ring, or her teats?

I’m sure Maureen would like to put herself forward for the job, but in case she should be successful I wouldn’t so much as kiss her arse.

She surely has the required pomposity, I’ll give her that.

This is a very nice looking copy for the apparent grade. It doesn’t look like it lays perfectly flat - if it was my copy it would find itself under big stack of heavy books for about a week or three. But that may be a trick of the camera.

It looks like a 5.0-6.0 to me, which puts its value at $150-$200 according to GP Analysis. Because it is a major key book in an affordable price range, it probably doesn’t NEED to go to CGC. Its value is not solely a product of its condition in this price range - any decently presenting copy of this book will run you $100. And they are very liquid - the surfer is still popular.

Harvard had a ROTC program?! Color me extremely surprised and pleased.

My best recollection from the late 80’s / early 90’s is that the Harvard ROTC members drilled at MIT where there was/is a full ROTC program. I wouldn’t be surprised if that was still the case.

Interesting! So you’d say it’s better not to get this one graded? If it does grade above 6.0, the value goes up considerably, though.

Very true - the price goes up on an exponential looking curve above 6.0. For example, the last 7.0 went for $250, but the last 8.0 went for over $600. If it lies flat it certainly has a shot, but the wear along the top edge and along the bottom right edge is a limiting factor I can’t tell what’s going on around the bottom staple.

The reason CGC grading books is so popular right is no one wants to be ripped off, which was common practice with comics prior to CGC. You don’t want to buy a book that has been restored or represented by the seller as a higher grade than it objectively is. The seller is often the last person you want assessing something as subjective as condition.

This goes double when the value of a book is almost entirely based on its condition. What the internet/information age has showed us is that “rare” is relative. And, as the condition goes down, supply goes up. This accounts for the huge gaps in price.

Here, with FF48, you have a key book with fresh pages and good gloss. Its not in good enough shape that anyone will think that someone has tried to restore it, or that someone would be afraid to carelfully examine the interior and maybe even READ it :-), but presents so well as to be very desirable to own.

If it was in the VF 8.0 range I would say to grade it. But as I see it now it’s squarely on the fence. Since the value is not based completely on condition in the 6.0 range, it may sell for the same amount graded or not - except in one case you’ve spent $40 to get it slabbed. One important caveat - if it is going to be sold online you should definitely grade it. The online grading on eBay and other sites is so bad that everyone assumes everything is 1-2 full grades below what it is represented as.
