Captain America #100, Big Premiere Issue
Tonight’s photo from the Lizard Collection is a Marvel Silver Age classic: the first appearance of the revived Captain America in his own magazine, published in April 1968.
Captain America was originally conceived during World War II, as a sickly wimp who took an experimental drug and gained super powers. He had an indestructible shield that he could throw like a boomerang, given to him by FDR himself. Nazis messed with Captain America at their peril.
In the post-war 1950s Captain America’s popularity declined, so he went into suspended animation as all superheroes must. In 1964, he was revived by The Avengers, and became a very popular Marvel comic in an era of campus unrest; even with that flag costume, somehow the Cap stayed cool.
