Anatomy of a Wingnut Smear

Glenn Reynolds links to this dishonest post today: Weasel Zippers: Charles Johnson ‘Fairly Sure’ the Tennesee State Flag is a Neo-Nazi Logo…

In the post to which Reynolds links, “Weasel Zippers” took a screenshot of a comment I posted here at LGF, asking if a flag seen in a tea party video might be a neo-Nazi flag — but ignored the comments that followed minutes later in the same thread, in which I clearly concluded that the flag was a Tennessee flag.

This isn’t the first time “Weasel Zippers” has pulled this kind of dishonest trick, either.

These people are so crazy it boggles the mind — and they’re liars too. And notice how neither “Weasel Zippers” nor Glenn Reynolds actually linked to the thread where my comment appeared, because that would let people see for themselves the comments I posted.

I don’t expect Mr. Zippers to retract his lie because this is what he does, but I thought Glenn Reynolds used to care about the truth a little more than this. Will he correct the record?

No, I’m not holding my breath.

UPDATE at 3/31/10 9:42:25 am:

Reynolds updates.

Still no link to LGF, which I must admit is a clever tactic if you’re trying to hide something.

I see that Charles did eventually figure out that it was a Tennessee flag, not some sort of “neo-Nazi” emblem.

In this case, “eventually” is defined as about ten minutes later.

But, you know, seeing neo-Nazis behind every bush deserves a bit of mockery. The Tea Party movement is not a neo-Nazi front, however much some might wish to make it so.

Hmm. Is there any special reason why it might be reasonable to consider the possibility of a neo-Nazi flag at this particular rally? (The claim that I said “the Tea Party movement is a neo-Nazi front” is a ludicrous straw man argument, as I’m sure law professor Reynolds is well aware.)

Oh, that’s right — this just happened to be the demonstration at which tea partiers yelled the “N” word at Representatives Lewis and Emanuel, and spit at Rep. Emanuel. I guess Glenn Reynolds “forgot” that little bit of context.

Of course not. He's too busy deflecting for right wing militias who want to assassinate police officers. Probably just about as accurate as his fantasies that Stimulus, TARP and Obamacare will be declared unconstitutional. You'd think that a law professor would have a better understanding of legal issues.

I would also like to add that Reynolds has never denounced the White Nationalists who are recruiting at these Tea Parties or his cohort, Michelle Malkin, who writes for the White Nationalist site VDARE. Since nobody in the Tea Party movement has made a meaningful denunciation of the racists, it's perfectly reasonable to speculate about the flags and signs that appear at Tea Parties. Anti-government militias are pretty well accepted in that crowd.

Instapundit's Glenn Reynolds: Maybe Obama just "hates Jews"

Looks like wingnut Pam Geller is getting some company from online Obama haters now suggesting it's "plausible" that the president of the United States is a seething anti-Semite.

Glenn Reynolds in Fantasyland

Politics %P% Sat, Feb 13, 2010 at 10:00:14 am PST

Amazingly, Glenn Reynolds (Instapundit) manages to write a puff piece for the Wall Street Journal about the National Tea Party Convention in Nashville without even mentioning Tom Tancredo’s racist call to bring back literacy tests or Joseph Farah’s Birther/theocrat speech and resulting standing ovation.

17 Gus  Tue, Mar 30, 2010 9:44:52pm

More garbage from Glenn Reynolds:

March 28, 2010

THE TIMING APPEARS CONVENIENT: FBI stages domestic raids.

UPDATE: Thoughts from Dan Riehl. Helping law enforcement with searches? I didn’t realize the Michigan Militia was still around.

ANOTHER UPDATE: Lawprof Tom Smith senses a media spin campaign: “Just wait for the MSM to associate them with ‘tea baggers’ and anybody not wild about health care. It could be something else but it looks like a plausible rumor at this stage. I am not hopeful that any distinctions will be made by our opinion leaders between those who think the Illuminati and the Joooz are running the world and those who think we should not create a debt that is half the size of our GDP. I hope the FBI understands the difference.”

MORE: According to this report, it’s got nothing to do with the Michigan Militia: “The group Hutaree, which has absolutely no connection to the Michigan Militia at all, has gotten into some serious trouble. From what my source has told me, this group was actually making threats towards Islamic groups.” Well, stay tuned. As has been noted here before, early reports on stuff like this are often wrong.

20 reine.de.tout  Tue, Mar 30, 2010 9:57:04pm

I just went back and looked at the original post.

The photo was small and the flag was very difficult to make out, and it did look like some of the nazi symbols mentioned (and linked).

And as Killgore said in 13,

Since nobody in the Tea Party movement has made a meaningful denunciation of the racists, it's perfectly reasonable to speculate about the flags and signs that appear at Tea Parties.

But in that original thread, it was very quickly determined to be the state flag of Tennessee and that was made very clear.

I'm stunned at the depth of dishonesty by Weasel Zippers and Glenn Reynolds. Jaw-dropping to the floor . . .

Yeah. According to Reynolds if someone stuck a Mexican sombrero on my father's head it wouldn't be racist. We're from Argentina. He's clueless.

Got nothing on Weasel Zippers. Best guess is that he's a pimple faced mouth breathing chickenhawk with his own pseudo anti-Jihadist website that had lunch with Robert Spencer. Two peas in a pod. That in itself shows the caliber of the like of the orbicular Mr. Spencer.

Woot! Lakewood! I tried working at Excel Wood once. That lasted half a day. Worked at another place where we have a lot of clients from Lakewood. Attorneys. My folks seem to go there a lot for dinner from time to time.

Ah. My aunt came over from Cuba with her parents when they fled Cuba. Brought the grandparents along. They were a hoot. Don Manolo was the grandfather. My aunt met my uncle in Brooklyn.

My wife's father, brother and an uncle are all named Hugo. :D It's confusing at family events!

You should hear some of the crap said about my wife when they think we can't hear them. (She's Cuban.)

Walking out of the local grocery the other day, I overheard a snatch of conversation between the couple who had been ahead of me in the checkout line.

The woman was bitching about the "dirty little foreign girl" who had done the checking-out.

I spoke up and said, "Excuse me? Did you say 'dirty little foreign girl?' Allow me to tell you something: [deleted] [deleted] [deleted] [deleted] [deleted] [deleted] [deleted]!"

That bitch turned four shades of purple while her wimpy dick of a male companion stood there looking frightened. I don't think they'll be in this neighborhood for long.

I wonder if anyone showed up waving a post-1956 Georgia state flag? It's one-third Seal of Georgia, and two-thirds Confederate battle banner. It was adopted to show defiance of the Supreme Court's civil rights rulings in the mid-50s, and was only changed to a less-controversial design in the 90s. There are still groups of people agitating to change it back.

Looks like Glenn added a little update to acknowledge that Charles identified the flag correctly, although it's so backhanded that i'm not even sure it qualifies as a retraction. We weren't "seeing Neo-Nazi behind every Tea Party." We're waiting for just one or two instances where some crazy douchebag shows up with their crazy colors on and the organizers publicly denounce them and tell them to hit the f'ing road.

It's different, Glenn. You heard it from a conservative. William F. Buckley wanted to stand athwart history and yell "stop". Tea Partiers, from what I can tell, want to stand athwart history and take a dump.

Sigh.

Still no link to LGF, which I must admit is a clever tactic — if you’re trying to spread lies and don’t want people to see for themselves that you’re a liar.

I see that Charles did eventually figure out that it was a Tennessee flag, not some sort of “neo-Nazi” emblem.

“Eventually,” in this case being defined as about 10 minutes later.

A Hill staffer I know emails with an alternative look at the same dynamic, suggesting President Obama is playing a game we've seen before. I'm republishing the staffer's email with permission.

{...}

At the same time, the policy is a tailored, measured version of what the Republicans have urged -- so, yes, the headline is, 'Obama Allows New Offshore Drilling/Presses For Energy Independence,' but at the same time, California/Oregon/Washington where opposition is strongest isn't included, and there are environmentally-friendly changes to Alaska leasing policy announced at the same time. And again, as we've seen before, Republicans are sort of forced to twist and parse, and even to oppose things they have long supported, just because the Administration hasn't gone far enough.

Finally, by announcing the drilling policy without seeking to extract concessions, the Administration makes clear that it is their policy and they are the centrist/flexible/pragmatic ones -- making it harder for Republicans to argue that they accomplished this or that they forced Obama to do it. The thing with the drilling is classic Obama.
Like it or not, he plays long ball.
I've read griping that he could have used it to earn concessions from Rs, or "Why do it since they'll still bitch" (which is happening).

But that's not the point.

A) It was a campaign promise, so he can tick it off as kept
B) It takes the wind out of the sails of those who claim he's a Green whack job
C) It gives cover for Reps in the districts affected (mainly Rs and Conservative Ds) and just might create some jobs in the areas.

All this is for later, to roll out in 2012 as "Things I've done".
He can now say: No arm twisting for concessions... I did it with out being forced.... that it went against the far left base....

I posted this at weasel-land, as well: you are correct Charles, the flag in question is neo-nazi, particularly the "Blood & Honour" flag, and is visible as such on & off from the point it begins its parade at 3:13 of the video, right up to the end. It is NOT the Tennessee state flag — repeat, NOT.

It looks like it could be the B&H Triskele to me as well, it's very clearly and absolutely not the Tennessee state flag as that lying pusbag WZ is claiming. TN state colors are red, white, blue, not red, white, and black like the Nazis. The tea party flag does not have a blue edge like the TN flag does, it does not have a blue circle as the TN flag does, it does not have three white stars as the the TN flag does. You have to make shit up to come to conclusions like WZ, of course he had no trouble making up a death certificate for a blogger who disappeared awhile back either. Actually, I downloaded the FLV file so I could go through it frame by frame with Quicktime, and yes, it does have the vertical blue stripe - it's clearly visible in a couple of frames.

The video is low quality, and the flag is far away from the camera. Because it's so pixellated and hard to make out, the negative space between the stars creates the illusion that resembles the triskele symbol (a modified swastika).

There's nothing wrong with asking whether it might be a neo-Nazi flag, because in the low-quality video it does bear a resemblance to that symbol, and the background red color is very close to a standard neo-Nazi flag color. (Not to mention that this is the rally at which the 'N' word was yelled at black representatives.)

But the blue stripe settles it - it's the TN flag.

127 Charles Johnson  Fri, Apr 2, 2010 12:02:31pm

Here's the frame in which you can see the vertical blue stripe of the TN flag:
