Spider-Man #40, The Origin of the Green Goblin (September 1966)

Lifestyle • Views: 8,239

Today’s photo from the Lizard Collection: issue #40 of The Amazing Spider-Man, published in September 1966, billed on the cover as “The End of the Green Goblin” (but it wasn’t, of course — super-villains never die). This issue actually told the story of the origin of the Green Goblin: industrialist Norman Osborn, driven insane by an experimental serum that also gave him superhuman strength and intelligence.

The Lizard Collection’s copy is in terrific shape, and is headed to the CGC for grading.

out of character...

For the record, your comic collection would make anyone who knows anything about them drool with envy and have conniptions of jealousy.

Heh. My grandma says something like that all the time. "Don't go by what I say, go by what I mean", usually when she says wants to go to Wal-Mart when she actually means she wants to go to Burger King.

Always preferred the Batman and Iron Man kinds of heroes. Regular people who trained themselves or used their knowledge to become heroes, rather than the whole "OK, you got exposed to Serum X, so now you have super powers".

Um, that's "Chemical X", not "Serum X". Just sayin'.

Unlike many of the other marvel titles from this period, ASM is in high enough demand that CGC graded book in the VF 8.0 area are worth grading, with prices in the $250-$300 range. Your copy looks like it could be better than that.

Anyone lucky enough to have NM 9.4 or better copies of ASM under issue 50 have thousand dollar books each. The 9.4 grade is very unforgiving though, as you may expect, given those prices.

Good luck!

What are your plans for them? Have you figured out how you are going to sell them? Slabbed books are similar to commodities, since they have been independently assessed for condition by experts, it takes a lot of the guesswork out of buying. A number of sites have sprung up that act as middlemen in the transaction for a 10% (or so) fee. ComicLink and ComicConnect come to mind. eBay is a viable venue for slabbed books as well.

Anyone who wants an interesting read about censorship and moral panic should read up on that little logo on the upper right of Charles' comic, the "COmics Code Authority" and Fredric Wertham, who basically censored the comic book industry. And eventually gave rise to underground comics who bypassed the distro channels of 4-color books.

As I said yesterday on another thread about comics. My uncle had a huge collection of Vault of Horror/Tales from the Crypt comics along with Vampirella and others. Then he found jesus and stuck them in a cardboard box under the trailer he lived in and they rotted.

Superman Comic Book Sold 1.5 Million

Superman Comic Book Sold 1.5 Million. A Superman comic book sold for 1.5 million dollars at an online auction. I know your asking yourself 1.5 million dollars for a comic book, but this isn’t just any comic book it’s one of the rarest Superman comic books ever.

This particular one is believed to be one of 100 left. So it makes it very rare and this comic book was in excellent condition.

Comics were the 50's version of today's video games in the terms you are talking above. Despite the issues with censorship, and similar to the arguments made against video games today, I can't help but feel Wertham was a little bit right.

"Seduction of the Innocent" while in a large part propoganda, does a good job of showing how the comic book companies took things too far in the effort to outdo each other.

In the end, though, it's all an issue of parenting in terms of a child's access to the material.

At one time, my dad had the biggest collection of baseball cards in all of New England. He actually had a reporter from the New York Times come and interview him about it.

Fast forward a couple years. He was away at college, Grandma thru the entire collection into the garbage, but made sure to keep the newspaper clipping about it.

Iran Nuclear Scientist Defects to U.S. In CIA 'Intelligence Coup'

An award-winning Iranian nuclear scientist, who disappeared last year under mysterious circumstances, has defected to the CIA and been resettled in the United States, according to people briefed on the operation by intelligence officials.

The officials were said to have termed the defection of the scientist, Shahram Amiri, "an intelligence coup" in the continuing CIA operation to spy on and undermine Iran's nuclear program.

Fox goes passive-aggressive with LL Cool J.

LL Tweeted yesterday:

Fox lifted an old interview I gave in 2008 to someone else & are misrepresenting to the public in order to promote Sarah Palins Show. WOW

Fox's reaction:

"Real American Stories features uplifting tales about overcoming adversity and we believe Mr. Smith’s interview fit that criteria," read a statement from the network. "However, as it appears that Mr. Smith does not want to be associated with a program that could serve as an inspiration to others, we are cutting his interview from the special and wish him the best with his fledgling acting career."

This to a guy who's been acting in movies since the mid-'80s (Halloween: H20, Deep Blue Sea, Charlie's Angels, etc.), and whose current CBS hit, NCIS: L.A., has ratings Fox News can only dream about?

In a March 30 Hot Air post, Ed Morrisey advanced the falsehood that the health care reform bill does not reduce the deficit because it did not include the so-called "doctor fix." However, there is no reason the "doctor fix" should be included in the cost of health care reform since the issue predates the health care reform debate and will need to be resolved regardless of health care reform's outcome.

Oh boy, expect a flood of purges coming out soon:

Prosecutor: Agent infiltrated Christian militia

An undercover federal agent infiltrated a Christian militia group that authorities say plotted to incite violent revolt, and the agent built explosives under the direction of the group's suspected ringleader, a prosecutor said Wednesday.

Arguing for the detention of alleged Hutaree leader David Brian Stone, 44, and six other members, Assistant U.S. Attorney Ronald Waterstreet said the agent accompanied Stone and others in a van as they tried to attend a Feb. 6 meeting of militias in Kentucky.

They turned back in Indianapolis because of bad weather, but the agent recorded Stone reading a speech, Waterstreet said. In the recording, played in U.S. District Court in Detroit, a speaker identified as Stone says "now it's time to strike and take our nation back so we will be free of tyranny."

Reminds me of some movie (can't remember the title) where someone infiltrates a domestic terror group and manages to re-route all of the people assigned to blow up buses onto the same bus. At the end of the film, one guy stands up and shouts his last words, and the rest of the people on the bus look up in horror and try to shout "NOOOO!" as they realize they're all carrying bombs. 129 Kragar  Wed, Mar 31, 2010 3:51:44pm

OK, I'm officially fucking tired of the term "save the planet". The planet is going to keep going on whether we survive to see it or not. That being said:

'We can't save the planet'

Professor James Lovelock, the scientist who developed Gaia theory, has said it is too late to try and save the planet.

The man who achieved global fame for his theory that the whole earth is a single organism now believes that we can only hope that the earth will take care of itself in the face of completely unpredictable climate change.

Interviewed by Today presenter John Humphrys, videos of which you can see below, he said that while the earth's future was utterly uncertain, mankind was not aware it had "pulled the trigger" on global warming as it built its civilizations.

So rather than try and play economic shell games to try and force the environment into some aribitrary point in a system we have no fucking control over anyway, how about we focus on what is important, namely how to keep as many people alive and productive in a drastically changing world. Desalinization plants, water pipelines, more efficient irrigation systems, expanded power production and grids. The planet is going to take care of itself, one way or the other. Lets start taking care of ourselves in the mean time.

This sir, is a militia of the people. No Sir, they are not well trained soldiers, but rather average Americans like you and me. They are not marines! They do what they can when they can.

They try to be marines even though they come from the humblest of trailer park origins. They have the marine spirit even if their bodies are riddled with the effects of fetal alcohol syndrome and their waists are thick!

sniff.

This is the very essence of America, believing you are a marine anyway, even if you would die within two days of reaching Paris Island.

It is the essence of America to look at the super tough Marine and know in your heart that you are just as bad ass as he is!

It is the essence of America to look at that IVY LEAGUE brainiac and know that you don't need to be as smart or educated as he is to know what's right about science or history or any of that boring academic stuff that only nerds like.

This makes me proud for the fighting spirit of Americans everywhere!

Given the whole "Obama is going to turn our sovereignty over to the U.N. and or the North American Union" and other such crap that has gone around it's not hard for the militia types to make the leap of local cops = current power structure = state = federal = Obama.

And it's even less surprising that they were a christian militia. Just look at the Left behind series of books combined with the video game (hint the "good guys" are fighting the anti-christ whose army just happens to resemble the U.N) and it's not a stretch.

re: #25 HoosierHoops

Hoops, here is part of Rose's latest tirade about me, Cato, the Maggot-Infested:

I did what I did because I thought it was the right thing to do, Cato. I did it out of kindness, and I never asked for anything or expected anything in return. [Except for your personal naysayers to be banned, as Charles has noted.]

I put my own neck on the line for Charles because I have a strong sense of justice and I despise the fould [sic] deeds of evil men. [...] I’m not one of them. [NB: At one point Rose accused Albusteve of being "evil" for not joining in her futile efforts to silence the stalkers by baiting them.]

I had it within my power to stand up in his defense, and I did. I used my own blog to do so, and did it on my own dime and my own time. [No you didn't, you ran a free blog. What you do with your own time is your affair.]

I don’t regret it, and given the same circumstances I’d do it all over again. Not because I’m looking for attention or some kind of special treatment, but because (at least in my mind) defending the innocent is the right thing to do. [The queen of the attention whores can't stop telling the world about her extraordinary kindness. (Funny, though, isn't it, how Charles stopped being defense-worthy and became an asshole instead once he gave her what she wanted, which, according to her, was no special treatment at all.)]

Believe it or not Cato, there really are good people still left in the world… decent people who do things for no other reason than simple kindness. A concept that you obviously know nothing about.

There follows a lot of personal abuse about how I'm going to Hell. Interested parties can read all about it on Yooper's site.

What strikes me most about Rose and her rants is the total lack of introspection or insight into her own motives. Hers is the kind of kindness I would pay hard cash to be spared. Honestly, if I were dying in the gutter, I'd give her my last change to go inflict herself on someone else. Because, if she decided to give me a five-spot, she'd first line up all her friends on the other side of the street to take her picture for "Charity News".

There's a term for the thing she suffers from: Self-Righteous Indignation.

As a final comment, may I just say that I called her on her bullshit act well before others saw it. I was roundly denounced for criticizing an LGF supporter. But I saw at the time and see even more clearly now that what she was supporting was her own little legend.

At the end of it all she promises not to talk to me anymore. (Whew!)

My last retort on Yooper's blog (unpublished, of course):

Irish Rose can’t get more than nine comments on her dying blog anymore, not even when she posts yet another sad whinge about LGF, not even when she writes four of them herself.

So she comes over here to the last dying thread on this moribund blog to have a last, good cry at the ingratitude and cruelty of this scurvy world.

Pathetic doesn’t begin to cover it.

Rose, your brave attempt to “protect” Charles did more harm than good, from the beginning. You managed nothing more than to stir the shit even further and give the people you were denouncing exactly what they craved: attention. Which is exactly what you craved in return. I told you this early on in the saga, but you wouldn’t listen. Talk about people who need a long, hard look in the mirror!

I do wonder if you’ll be able to keep to your stated intention and discontinue communication with me. Somehow I doubt it. You blocked me from your whinnying whine-fest of a blog, yet can’t resist taking me on here.

Good day, madam!

re: #11 ckb

We're going to get some of the rarer ones graded and see what we have, then decide the best way to sell them. There are close to a thousand comic books in the whole collection, with lots of Marvel books in excellent shape.

Thanks for the compliment. But, there is one part of your comment that I don't understand. I do have a small personal stack of monthly bills (car insurance, second mortgage, paying of some dental work) and I pay all the utilities here at my girlfriends house. That's close to 500 a month in gas, electricity, communications (phone, satellite, internet) and waste disposal. All in all, I have about 700 dollars a month in bills alone, and that doesn't include out of pocket expenses for medications and transportation costs (gas, vehicle maintenance).

And the last thing I would ever do is just live totally off of someone else's efforts. There is no way I would live up here with my girlfriend if I was not able to contribute.

So, I'm not sure where you ever got the impression that I don't need to work.

Two dollars over minimum. Only part time, 20 hours a week guaranteed, but additional hours are almost always available, full benefits just like the full time positions after 12 months, it's not a union shop (has something to do with location of store to the rest of the union stores with in Denver country), but they follow most of the union rules.

Best of all, it's only 3 miles from my house, right up here in the mountains. The pay will take care of what I need right now, and I still will have time to do the off and on programming work that I occasionally do from home.

This is an article from physics today. It contains an interview that should be seen.

Frozen Arctic methane shows signs outgassing

[Link: blogs.physicstoday.org...]

Here is the main paper from Science.

[Link: www.sciencemag.org...]

No PDF is available without subscription as yet.

To break this down, we have new evidence of a massive methane source that had previously been considered to be sequestered, is actually being released.

We are seeing it now.

To recap the science, CO2 warms things up to emit methane. Methane is a vastly worse GHG than CO2.

This sort of thing throws all predictions into the reality is much worse category.

It is not possible to overstate how bad this potentially is.

Ya wanna talk about bad methane sources?!

Yes but in the grand scheme of things those are merely lowlife cretins.

They have little potential to harm people on the scale of what I am talking about.

I am very sorry to sound so alarmed, but I just got done analyzing a paper that proved to me that things I thought were absolute worst case scenarios are now becoming the most likely ones.

Most models - even in worst case do not take a methane release into account. If it is included, everything gets vastly worse. Since we really do not know how to model this well yet, it is nearly impossible to say precisely how bad it will be and in what time frame. It could move worst case scenarios up by as much as 50 years. It could just make certain that there is only a 2 meter rise by 2100. There is no way now however, that minimal nice projections that everyone counts on are possible.

213 Brother Holy Cruise Missile of Mild Acceptance  Wed, Mar 31, 2010 5:03:47pm

Hi Ludwig!
I saw something about that on the Science channel a few years ago..

Not this. Methane itself has been known to be a problem for some time. What makes this so terrible is that it is a new source that had been assumed to not be a major contributor. Climatologists had reason to believe that this source would stay trapped.

They were wrong.

This is a colossal case of thing suddenly got very much worse.

Hey All!

I want to bring to people's attention something very serious.

Is this different from the stories I've been seeing about methane percolating up out of the thawing permafrost? The ones with the scientist lighting a flame from the methane emanating from a frost hole? Not questioning the science, just curious.

OK, now I'm sick. Over at the stalker blog, Speranza writes:

Seriously though, I could not fault the Russkies if they now decided to treate Chechen women as enemy combatants to be dealt summarily with if caught. You think that the FSB (the successor to the KGB) will be doing any profiling? Yes Islamic terrorists (now there is a redundancy) need to be treated like rats.

Real men of genius.

The Russian FSB probably keeps track of everyone from Chechnya. As for his comic book fantasy of profiling Chechen women from physical or external attributes, good luck with that. The comic book fantasy of course being that Chechen women will come into Moscow wearing a burqa and traditional dress.

No Kidding.

But I do remember a show about methane being released from beneath the ocean and the problems it could cause. They were using a row boat down off bermuda somewhere to show where the gas was coming up out of the ocean as bubbles and basically it was a large area where this was occurring.

I think part of it had something to do with theories behind the bermuda triangle but they were talking about how a "belch" of natural gas/methane from the ocean could, in some cases, cause vessels to sink. It was a long time ago but they were showing that if a large enough amount was released and concentrated in a cloud form one spark could be really, really bad and they mentioned how it had happened or may have happened in the past.

re: #219 The Sanity Inspector

Is this different from the stories I've been seeing about methane percolating up out of the thawing permafrost? The ones with the scientist lighting a flame from the methane emanating from a frost hole? Not questioning the science, just curious.

Yes this is different.

The Siberian and Canadian bogs release methane from a different mechanism.

There is a huge amount of organic material buried under the permafrost in Siberia and Canada. As that warms up, anaerobic bacteria begin to eat the material (plant matter mostly) and that releases methane. It is exactly the same reason you don't store a large amount of cut grass in a large closed container.

Those effects, are in of themselves, sufficient to potentially push us into a worst case regime.

This is something else.

This is that huge mounts of methane that had been dissolved and frozen in the northern oceans are now being released because even the deeper ocean layers are warming.

This is a giant feedback and another source.

Shakhova notes that Earth's geological record indicates that atmospheric methane concentrations have varied between about .3 to .4 parts per million during cold periods to .6 to .7 parts per million during warm periods. Current average methane concentrations in the Arctic average about 1.85 parts per million, the highest in 400,000 years, she said. Concentrations above the East Siberian Arctic Shelf are even higher.

The East Siberian Arctic Shelf is a relative frontier in methane studies. The shelf is shallow, 50 meters or less in depth, which means it has been alternately submerged or terrestrial, depending on sea levels throughout Earth's history. During Earth's coldest periods, it is a frozen arctic coastal plain, and does not release methane. As Earth warms and sea level rises, it is inundated with seawater, which is 12-15 degrees warmer than the average air temperature.

"It was thought that seawater kept the East Siberian Arctic Shelf permafrost frozen," Shakhova said. "Nobody considered this huge area."

"This study is a testament to sustained, careful observations and to international cooperation in research," said Henrietta Edmonds of the National Science Foundation, which partially funded the study. "The Arctic is a difficult place to get to and to work in, but it is important that we do so in order to understand its role in global climate and its response and contribution to ongoing environmental change. It is important to understand the size of the reservoir—the amount of trapped methane that potentially could be released—as well as the processes that have kept it "trapped" and those that control the release. Work like this helps us to understand and document these processes."

I appreciate your knowledge, Ludwig. I really do, but I must admit, my eyes tend to glaze over when you guys start talking about it. It's not that I'm not interested or don't believe you, I just don't follow it so closely.

Common sense would tell me that independence for Chechnya would be even better. The idea of creating a banned people or a state within a state sound like something from the Dark Ages.

Here is the short form from my perspective:

1. It is impossible to separate nationalism from political Islam. Islam itself is not the enemy, but political Islam, which stirs the fires of nationalism to produce a theocratic fascism can only end in tragedy.

2. The Russians have a long and terrible history of atrocity against the Muslim Chechans. There can be no denial of this. The Chechans as a people and a nationality have every reason in the world to hate the Russians with an abiding and deep passion.

3. After being crushed by the Russians, the Chechans turned to political Islam.

4. Now we have two completely evil groups murdering innocent people on both sides for the same cycle of nationalistic violence.

5.The Chechans have adopted some of the most absolutely brutal methods of the Islamists. As Islamists go, Hamas dreams it could kill as many innocents as the Chechans have.

6. There is no real comparison to Israel, save as a counterpoint and as a contrasting case. Unlike Israel, the Russians will take horrible harsh and heavy handed measures that are certain to justify the Islamists. Unlike Israel, the western world will not utter a peep if Russia does respond with massive artillery barrages and carpet bombings. Unlike Russia, Israel actually has a legitimate claim to the disputed territory.

Oh, the Onion. How I love thee:

U.S. Government To Save Billions By Cutting Wasteful Senator Program

In an effort to reduce wasteful spending and eliminate non-vital federal services, the U.S. government announced plans this week to cut its long-standing senator program, a move it says will help save more than $300 billion each year.

According to officials, the decision to cut the national legislative body was reached during a budget review meeting on Tuesday. After hours of deliberation, it was agreed that the cost of financing U.S. senators far outweighed the benefits they provided.

"Now more than ever, we must eliminate needless spending wherever possible," President Obama said at a press conference Wednesday. "When we sat down to go over our annual budget, we asked ourselves, where can we safely trim back? What programs can we do away with without negatively impacting the American people? Which bloated and ineffective institutions can we no longer justify having around?"

"The answer was obvious," Obama added. "The U.S. Senate just needed to go."

From the story:

Moreover, the study found that the U.S. government already funds a fully operational legislative body that appears to do the exact same job as the Senate, but which also provides a fair and proportional representation of the nation's citizens and has rules in place to prevent one individual from holding the operations of the entire chamber hostage until he is guaranteed massive federal spending projects for his home state of Alabama.

What can I do? I'm a fairly green person and have been for years. If I think about the worst of it, I won't be able to get out of bed in the morning.

OK here is a list of what you can do about it.

1. Get seriously educated about the facts. Look into the legitimate sources on the matter and learn the material. If you believe the science you will conclude that lives depend on getting this right.

2. After you freak out about just how bad this really is take a deep breath and then resolve to take real action.

3. Spread what you have learned. Say it at a coffee break when there is a chance to. Point out the flaws in the denier arguments. Present the facts. The more people who get this, the more chance of doing something. In reality, this is our only real hope to overcome the political and vested interest driven inertia (from both sides) on the issue. I said both sides pointedly. If you think I drop the boom on right wing deniers, you should see how I give it to the supposedly green person who doesn't want a wind farm to ruin his view. Both sides can only be defeated by having reasonable people know the alternatives that result from inaction.

4. Do the common sense things if you don't already. Insulate your house. Turn off lights that are not in use. Buy the curly bulbs. Walk or ride a bike for short trips. Recycle. Don't take 45 minutes in the shower. Get clean in 10 minute. Keep your car in good shape with the tires inflated and the engine clean.

5. If you can afford a hybrid or smart car, buy it. The price goes down as the market goes up.

6. The same applies to solar panels. And that car and those panels are a great conversation opener to educate people with!

7. Actually write your congress critter. It is impossible to overstate the value of just having a concerned citizen write a real letter that doesn't rave and talks sensibly. The number of Americans willing to do so is very small. We are generally too lazy to do it. If a congress critter sees such a letter, he or she assumes that there must be much more sentiment behind it than just one writer. After all, most people won't write in even about things that they will argue until blue in the face. If every lizard did just this step tonight, it would have a potentially profound effect.

8. Do not be afraid to walk the talk. This is a global issue. It is not as if you are exempt from the consequences.

9. Learn about the alternatives we do have to stop this madness. There really are viable technologies that can fix this. Be able to tell people and your congress critter about the benefits of smart grids, nuclear, solar and wind. When some idiot in your neighborhood speaks up in a town meeting about not wanting a windmill, present the counter argument yourself.

10. There is hope if we act now. However the clock is ticking and the science seems to be saying that it is ticking faster and faster.

re: #278 brookly red

in fact why don't we just have the Governor also be the Senator? now that seems more representational to me...

Well, the whole point of the Senate was to have representatives of each state's government have a say on the national level. That was true until 1913.

Personally, I'm not sure it's such a bad idea to have senators be appointed members from the state legislators/governors. Governors have no say in national legislation, yet have to follow every damn law they pass.

(I realize the irony of my statements, being from Illinois and all. So don't bother pointing that out.)

Offshore drilling of any kind can only insure more dependence on burning fossil fuels. It is also absolutely false to assume that American companies drilling for oil will save you any money or help America as a whole.

There is NO JUST FOR AMERICA OIL MARKET. Get that clear. The oil gets sold all over the world and will have almost no impact in reducing your prices or decreasing our dependence on foreign oil since world demand for energy only keeps climbing. The only people who profit from this are the oil companies and their pet politicians.

Although the Stone Temple Pilots are very tempting Friday night..
So Sunday we have free parking at Conceco so we'll park and take a bus to the goo goo dolls.. Take a bus back..Eat for free for 4 at the footlocker...Awesome joint..Then watch basketball in row 10 section 20..
All four tickets free..Cause I won the package from FED-EX..
I Fucking love you FED-EX...
( This is interesting.. When you win the 4 ticket package from FED-EX you have to submit every bodies name using the tickets...Which is weird..I won them and have them in my hot little hands..Why every bodies name?
What crap! After Sunday I'm emailing FED-EX the following reply..)
Thank you for the Tickets Sunday in Indy..I'm not sure who I took with the other 3 tickets...I'm pretty sure they were all Hookers From Duke but the only name I recall is Candi..Does that help?

Well said.

Obama is not a far left liberal. The issue is that the right has gone so nuts, anyone to the left of Rush, Paul, Beck, Buchanan and John Birch is a leftist in their deluded eyes.

Obama is not a bad president either.

However he is an idealistic and somewhat naive president who is learning the political ropes on the job. He is a weak president who can not control his own party or effectively shut down the lies of the opposition.

He is completely wrong about Israel.

As a result, he will do an average job or even potentially an above average job when the truth is that the situation is bad enough that only a truly superior president could really fix things.

But by August, then-Sen. Obama signaled that he was willing to support legislation that included off-shore drilling as part of a bipartisan compromise.

"What I don't want is for the best to be the enemy of the good," he said at the time. "If we can come up with a genuine bipartisan compromise, in which I have to accept some things I don't like and the Democrats have to accept some things they don't like, when it's actually moving us in the direction of energy independence, I'm open to that. What I will not do is support a plan that suggests that drilling is the answer to our energy problems."

Rather presidential of him, do you think?

re: #337 pingjockey

Okay, I googled the issue:

SEN. BEDFORD'S SLOT MACHINE 'BINGO' LEGISLATION PASSES SENATE

Alabama Senators voted today to pass Senate Bill 380 to legalize and expand slot machine gambling, which is currently illegal and being referred to as electronic bingo. [...]

Now, the bill will face the Alabama House. If it passes and is not vetoed by Governor Bob Riley, it will go before Alabama residents for a vote.

Hours before the vote, senators opposing the bill were not allowed to participate in the debate. They had hoped to present an amendment giving Alabamians what they called a “clear vote” on gambling, but filibusters from the bill’s supporters kept opponents from speaking until less than 30 minutes before the vote was called.

“It’s time the people understand what’s going on in the Senate,” said Sen. Paul Sanford, R-Huntsville, after he realized there was not enough time to present his amendment. “They don’t want the truth to be out. They don’t want to discuss the positives and negatives of this issue. … Why is it they stand up here and say let the people vote but they do not let the senators have a say on the bill? … This was a show for the media and the gallery, and it’s unfortunate. It is a disservice to the state of Alabama. … Today is a perfect example of how government does not function for the citizens of Alabama.”

Sen. Hank Erwin, R-Montevallo, said today's vote was a "display of brute, raw power."

[...]

Joe Godfrey, executive director of Alabama Citizens Action Program, said pro-gambling senators “rammed the bill through.”

Sounds like the local GOP has picked up one from the national GOP playbook, recycling the anti-HCR talking points.

That's big chunk of it. The Feds are tied in because of an obscure law giving the state the right to sort of define the kinds of gambling allowed on Indian land. Some of the Casino Indians from out of state are trying to disallow the tribal identity of some of our guys who missed the muster for the Trail of Tears. I'm under no illusions that we can get rid of oil completely. Nor should we, but by way of personal consumption, the two big ticket items being housing and cars, we could become nearly oil free. I also don't think it's wise to cut off all foreign trade. In fact, I'm pretty sure that would bring down the world economy.

Small Hydros

Besides operating the state's largest hydroelectric projects, the New York Power Authority also generates kilowatts (kw) from five small hydro stations. We developed these projects in the 1980s to reduce the state's dependence on electricity produced by burning foreign oil. Our small hydro projects, located on rivers and reservoirs across the state, do not affect the quality or quantity of the water, which is also used for recreation, navigation and drinking.

Here's a list of our small hydros:

Ummm duder it seems your entire premise is false. Try again. The East German Judge now gives you a 3.o/10.00 for your lame dismount.

DOUBLE ha!

Reminder: 'brookly' red knows jackshit about nyc, and was last seen claiming that gay bashing in the west village is proof that-- wait for it-- liberal dems who live in manhattan are doing the gay bashing.

Yes, I will never cease to bring that up. ;)

Hopefully. I'm going to have to research the position to make sure its good, but it is a real offer for a W-2 position. It's progress.

Hello troll. ;) Is the point where I have to remind you about the republican mayors of NYC, or the republican govs?

Nighty-nite, 'brookly'.

i was going to point out that St Al Gore only invented the environment about a decade ago - Theres been a GOP or nominally GOP mayor of NYC since 1994, 16 years.

The 11 years of a GOP governor intersecting that time too would have been churlish of me to point out.

That was going to be my next post, but I was making Jimmah a cup of tea. ;)

Yeah, 'brookly' knows jack-all about New York. Other moments of hilarity have included: 1) Ignorance of the Rockefeller drug laws, denial that there was ever any movement to repeal them and 2) the claim that 'the word on the street in NYC' was that health reform wouldn't happen.

Anyway, troll. And as Ludwig pointed out, not even one that is especially good at it.

FERC OK's Testing New Kinetic Hydropower Plant in New York City's East River
Verdant Power Gets Precedent-Setting Approval for Testing 200 kW Power Project

By Sean O'Neill
July 29 2005, Washington, D.C.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), granted Verdant Power, LLC's request to clarify that they do not require a license to deploy, on a short term (18 months), experimental basis, six 36 kW tidal power turbine units that will temporarily supply power to two customers on New York City's Roosevelt Island, at no cost. Verdant had argued that it needed to install projects and connect them to actual customers to study and evaluate how they would operate in real world conditions. Verdant will use the results of its second 18- month study to enable them to complete its application for a FERC license.

New York state has had a Republican Governor for around 50 years of the last century.................

Not entirely sure - but don't they have some say in large infrastructure projects?

They do. I regard Brookley well, but he was trying to score a political point without having done his research. He bluffed, you called.

Yep. As I said, brookly is woefully ignorant. Of course, money does come from the feds too and NYS and NYC have been screwed that way more than once-- the famous Daily News headline in the 70's was "FORD TO CITY: DROP DEAD".

But hey, according to 'brookly', NYS and NYC is 'all Dem', has no hydro-- oh, and he also believes that the only place to go for Spanish food or lobster is a place in (our) Chelsea area. At this point I am rubbing it in, yes.

re: #348 Floral Giraffe

Is that like my friend from Bakersfield, who always says "It's a nice place to be from"?
I get living with nice people. I moved from Hollywierd to a "family oriented" community. No one blows their car horns here, you want to make a left turn? They let you in. Yes, stop & give you plenty of room. It was odd, for the first few months.

My father is from Fresno, and he says it's not even a nice place to be from.

'Siberia with palm trees' is the expression he picked up from a fellow Fresnoan.

re: #405 brookly red

On several occasions you have said on this blog, and in no uncertain terms, that you are a democrat. Yet the language in your sentence here [emphasis mine]:

Why did you Dems shut our hydro plants & force use to burn oil & coal? You OWN it.

... seems odd. It could easily give one the impression that you have been disingenuous.
