The defamation laws in Australia are pretty strict.

To defame someone, you do not have to make up false things yourself. You might defame a person by repeating or replaying words spoken by someone else, for example an interviewee. It is no defence to claim that you were only quoting someone else. If you print or broadcast something defamatory, you could be taken to court, along with your producer, your editor or station manager and the person who said the words in the first place.[Link: www.thenewsmanual.net...]

It has also emerged that Beecher is not the only person to have received legal threats from Blair after the post. Darryl Mason, whose blog The Orstrahyun referred to the original post and linked to a subsequent apology, received a nasty letter from Blair's lawyers last April demanding he ''offer Mr Blair a reasonable amount by way of compensation''. Mason, who claims similar letters were sent to three other bloggers, told the Diary: ''I find it extraordinary and extremely sad that someone who was an early champion of blogging is now pursuing legal action against other bloggers.''

....the Diary understands the trouble began when one of Crikey's bloggers noticed that the IP address - or computer identification number - of one of the people commenting on Blair's blog was identical to Blair's own IP address. In effect, the blogger wrote, Blair was so hard up for comments to his blog that he had resorted to writing his own comments, under another name. It sparked almost a year of demands by Blair, through his lawyers, that Crikey atone for what he says is a false accusation. While the blogger published an apology of sorts early in the piece, Blair was unsatisfied because he thought it repeated the alleged defamation. A couple of weeks ago he took the matter to court.

What a whiney little bitch timmy is*. I was once accused of being someone's sockpuppet here, and the most drastic recourse I resorted to was to call that person an idiot.

(AP) – 21 minutes ago

BRISBANE, Australia — A coal-carrying ship that ran aground and was leaking oil on Australia's Great Barrier Reef was in danger of breaking apart, officials said Sunday.

The Chinese coal carrier Shen Neng 1 ran aground late Saturday on Douglas Shoals, a favorite pristine haunt for recreational fishing east of the Great Keppel Island tourist resort. It's off the coast of Queensland state in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park off northeast Australia.

Sheehan's out there, but I respect the fact that she lost her son in a pointless conflict. Spending a trillion dollars to kill Saddam Hussein and then deal with the chaos it engendered was, let's face it, rock dumb. If I was her and lost a son for such a bullshit result would enrage me, too.

(I know it's not that simple, that the idea was to put a permanent American presence in a wedge between Syria, Iran, and the KoSA to press all three from inside. And to pressure Iran on two fronts. But the result has been a huge cock-up and strategic failure.)

Those were not insurgencies however. Talk to people in the Cointel biz and they will tell you that those take 7-11 years. We've essentially already won the war in Iraq, now it's a question of whether it was to any good or not.
Right now I'm leaning towards yes it was good, especially as the more secular party won the last election. It will take time to really settle whether it's a real long term strategic plus or minus in the region however.

However, when we start accusing some people as using their children as props, we can see that others do it, too. And after a time, I think Sheehan did that.

But that's because the Right accused her of using her son as a prop and you bought it. What if she was sincere in protesting an absolutely stupid incursion that resulted in the deaths of countless other mother's sons? She became a whipping girl for the Right because, at a most fundamental level, she was correct.

There was no reason for her son to die in Iraq. Hussein was under our thumb, and Al Queda's surrogates weren't in Iraq until after we got there. Al Queda was on the Pakistan/Afghanistan border and we took our eyes off the prize and turned our attention to Hussein, because of some neo-con fever dream of victory.

I've seen people pretty much go off the deep end after losing a child. All the way deep end. I just don't think that she's got it together, even now, and is being used. I'm probably wrong, but I have a lot of compassion for her that makes me look away from her foolish actions. She also is not a powerful person in any way, so I don't fret when she starts supporting dictators, I don't like it much, but I don't fret.

Saudi Arabia and Egypt would be building their own nukes, they fear Iran's Islamist influence and Saddam's unpredictability. Libya would have never given up its nuclear program, and Syria would be even more emboldened to continue its proliferation.

Not a pretty picture in my humble opinion.

Personally, I believe that Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Jordon where quietly relieved when Saddam was toppled.

Chavez wants a Nuke plant. But for a peaceful energy program. I have heard that somewhere before...
[Link: www.bloomberg.com...]

With the help of Russia. Let's see where have I seen Russia involved with nuclear power for "peaceful" purposes:

From the beginning of 1990s, Russian Federation formed a joint research organization with Iran called Persepolis which provided Iran with Russian nuclear experts, and technical information stolen from the West by GRU and SVR, according to GRU defector Stanislav Lunev. He said that five Russian institutions, including the Russian Federal Space Agency helped Tehran to improve its missiles. The exchange of technical information with Iran was personally approved by the SVR director Trubnikov.

In 1995, Iran signed a contract with Russia to resume work on the partially-complete Bushehr plant, installing into the existing Bushehr I building a 915MWe VVER-1000 pressurized water reactor, with completion expected in 2009. There are no current plans to complete the Bushehr II reactor.

Modern warfare;

You have the right to surrender. If you give up that right, you may be shot. If you do not wish to be shot, you will be provided with food, shelter, and food in accordance with your religious beliefs. A lawyer will be appointed to you, should you desire one. Anything that happens to you, after you surrender, may be taken down, and used against us. If you understand your rights, fire once for "yes", or fire twice for "no'.

She also chose to hang out with some very ugly people. I have very mixed feeling about Iraq, and I deeply sympathize with the pain of a woman who loses a child to a war she believes wrong.

But around the time we got to 'he was killed for lies and for a PNAC Neo-Con agenda to benefit Israel. My son joined the army to protect America, not Israel,' I had to realize that her voice had been taken over by people who had less interest in peace than a specific political agenda, and that she had accepted what she had been told by the people who got close to her fast when she first began to speak.

That's a pity, but while I still respect her loss, I could not trust anything that came out of her mouth after that.

I agree. The problem is that we *created* the insurgency in Iraq. It was stable before the invasion, and Hussein was completely contained. The UN inspectors went in, and continued to find *nothing* in the way of WMD for month after month, and for good reason. There was no there there. So when Rumsfeld said, just after the invasion:

There's no doubt that we aided the insurgency a bit -- I once got in a long drawn out head butting here when I said that it was a real big mistake to fire all the Baathist bureaucrats in the country and in the army, since they were the ones who knew how things ran.

I argued that the remaining Baathists after Sadaam's capture needed amnesty, and that peace and some kind of accommodations would need to be made for them before we could get near victory. I compared them to the Loyalists who were disenfranchised in our Revolutionary war, and one of the Ben's (I forget which) went berserk on me over that.

Carpet bombing Sadr City and Fallujah wouldn't have solved the Iraqi insurgency. It would have made it worse. Believe me, I was a SAC pilot. I studied war, intensely. I had a lot of free time while standing alert and a fairly good library. I fully understand the limitations of strategic warfare on insurgencies.

Didn't we get all the people out of Fallujah and take out the insurgents? On the ground?

Bloody monuments and starvation do wonders to the will to support an insurgency. With the proper propaganda it becomes 'This can happen to you'.
Same thing the insurgents used (which worked for them for a while), but on a much, much grander scale.

Those Baathists bureaucrats only knew how to transfer bribe money to Uday and Qusay. They didn't know how to run a modern democracy.

Well, on the day of the iPocalypse there are a plethora of iGasms being reported.

Seems like it was a good business day for Apple:

An estimated 700,000 iPads bought on day one

A number of Apple apostles did experience more than the thrill of holding a new shiny object: They got a serendipitous jolt of tech royalty. In San Jose, overnighters and early-risers got to hobnob with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, who joined the pre-iPad vigil at 6 p.m. Friday at Valley Fair mall. In Palo Alto, Apple CEO Steve Jobs sauntered unannounced into the University Avenue store shortly before noon to drink in the scene.

[...]

Some in the tech industry question whether the iPad, and competing gadgets to be rolled out in coming months, will ever be more than a niche product. Others, though, see the mouse-less slender slab as an inflection point that could redefine the portable computer industry.

[...]

In what has become a ritual, people lined up by the thousands across the country to get their iPads and be part of an Apple product launch.

[...]

Twelve-year-old Joshua Elefteratos, who had pre-ordered his iPad, was first in line among those who had reserved their tablets. His father secured the top spot by showing up at midnight; Joshua joined him at 7:30 a.m.

As the two left the store 15 minutes after it opened, Joshua Elefteratos held his tablet over his head. "It's like I'm holding the Bible," the Saratoga boy said.

[...]

Wearing a black hoodie and jeans, Jobs, who came with his wife, Laurene Powell-Jobs, and daughter, scanned the displays of tech goodies and watched Apple employees give iPad how-to demonstrations. And he drew amazed gazes from shoppers already expressing excitement overload.

"I love the iPad," one 20-something female shopper blurted out to Jobs. To which he happily replied, "Good!"

And The Steve looked upon all he created and he declared it "Good".

The states of the Middle East are run by Autocrats of one stripe or another in almost all cases -- the Islamic concept of Emir pretty much sets a bias towards strongman rule up. All autocrats require massive bureaucracies to survive - and the Baathist bureaucrat families that were in Baghdad actually stretch back in time to those who ran Babylon, and whether Iraq is a democracy or not that bureaucracy will remain, and the corruption and bribery and etc. that's endemic to the region will remain -- hopefully the terror will go and stay gone. I suspect that's the best we can do short term.

re: #210 Hawk With Claws

Here's an article and a conversation between Ariel Sharon and George Bush before the war, in which Sharon warns Bush about trying to democratize an Arab state. He didn't suggest it.

[Link: www.forward.com...]

Publicly, Sharon played the silent ally; he neither criticized nor supported the Iraq adventure. ...

But sometime prior to March 2003, Sharon told Bush privately in no uncertain terms what he thought about the Iraq plan. Sharon’s words — revealed here for the first time — constituted a friendly but pointed warning to Bush. Sharon acknowledged that Saddam Hussein was an “acute threat” to the Middle East and that he believed Saddam possessed weapons of mass destruction.

Yet according to one knowledgeable source, Sharon nevertheless advised Bush not to occupy Iraq. According to another source — Danny Ayalon, who was Israel’s ambassador to the United States at the time of the Iraq invasion, and who sat in on the Bush-Sharon meetings — Sharon told Bush that Israel would not “push one way or another” regarding the Iraq scheme.

According to both sources, Sharon warned Bush that if he insisted on occupying Iraq, he should at least abandon his plan to implant democracy in this part of the world. “In terms of culture and tradition, the Arab world is not built for democratization,” Ayalon recalls Sharon advising.

Be sure, Sharon added, not to go into Iraq without a viable exit strategy. And ready a counter-insurgency strategy if you expect to rule Iraq, which will eventually have to be partitioned into its component parts. Finally, Sharon told Bush, please remember that you will conquer, occupy and leave, but we have to remain in this part of the world. Israel, he reminded the American president, does not wish to see its vital interests hurt by regional radicalization and the spillover of violence beyond Iraq’s borders.

From the WSJ article you linked:

Gene Munster, an analyst with Piper Jaffray, said Apple could sell 200,000 to 300,000 iPads over the weekend and 2.8 million over the course of 2010. Research firm iSuppli Corp. predicted that 7.1 million iPads will sell world-wide this year, with sales nearly tripling to 20.1 million by 2012.

However:

Analyst: Apple sold 600-700 thousand iPads the first day

Piper Jaffray Senior Research Analyst, Gene Munster, on Saturday said he believes Apple sold between 600-700 thousand iPads on the first day. This includes the pre-orders that would have been coming in since March 12.

These new sales predictions are well above the 200-300 thousand units Munster previously expected Apple to sell on the first day.

Because there were many "pick ups" of previously ordered (online) iPads more units were of course moved than people just walking in off the street would otherwise have purchased.

I made the iGEEK comment because of this:

In San Francisco, tech blogger Jason Kincaid had been in line for one and a half hours and was about to be clapped into the store by the blue-shirted staff. He already had two iPhones, an iMac and the MacBook Pro laptop, but "had to have an iPad," he said. "It's changing the paradigm of how we will use computers – I'll need to test all its apps as well as the way the touch-screen works," he said.

I don't care how many they sell. These people are the computer equivalent of Star Wars geeks.

iPad attacked: Green Peace says cloud computing guzzles coal

iPad owners are targeted by a new Greenpeace report which accuses the iPad and other cloud computing dependent tech like Facebook and the Google Chrome OS. The big problem is apparently the energy chugging data centres that power cloud-reliant tech like the iPad.

Greenpeace says: “Cloud computing devices like the Apple iPad [raise] fresh questions about how the internet is powered and whether the IT sector will continue to fuel climate change by increasing demand for dirty coal power.” As far as we know, all coal power is dirty.

In the big picture I believe a move to the smaller, more mobile computing platforms will turn out to be ecologically beneficial. Besides consuming fewer resources compared to full size desk computers, if indeed the iPad (and similar products) finally replaces print media there will be a huge benefit in not having to haul all those dead tree products around the world.

Non-implemented, as of yet. I have been sedentary for about over a year, and gained a bit of weight. That, along with my age and habits is a bad combo, so I am not going to jump back into weights just yet.

My plan is to start slow by simply walking, then bike riding. I just need to stop procrastinating and get too it. The good news is that I already eat healthy. The worst part of my diet is beer.

Speaking of the hernia... wanted to re-emphasize that when I recommend doing "crunches" that I do not mean that which most people think of when doing "crunches." Too many people think the goal is to wrap the body forward. That is not good. Rather, the idea is to lift the upper torso to the ceiling as the belly button is pulled backwards to the spine.

Anyway, good luck.

re: #323 Slumbering Behemoth

It is very important with a hernia to be careful of how you are putting pressure on the abdominal wall, as you undoubtedly know by now.

As such, the ab exercises have to be those which don't use other muscles to try and force pressure on the guts, that would push out the wall. Rather, what is needed is the ability to carefully strengthen the muscles of the abdomen.

re: #329 Slumbering Behemoth

Hernias arise because of the lack of enough tissue to prevent the eruption of intestines downward. If your hernia was caused by a genetic or developmental factor which led to an absence of material to form a wall, exercises probably can't do anything for you in regards to being able to keep such things from happening.

HOWEVER, it is also true that you can by improper actions cause problems for yourself. No wonder you Drs get bug-eyed when you tell them you're doing lunges!

Thing is though, strong abdominal muscles are need for good posture and alignment. Poor alignment when doing any activity could cause the hernia problems (such as sloppily done lunges!)

In our American society in particular, with our anatomies contorted by the automobile, couch-potato-ing, computer addiction, etc., I see so many people who are not holding their upper bodies correctly. What happens is that the thoracic cavity is squished as the spine is curved forward. Ideally the upper body should be balanced directly (vertically) above the pelvis. Almost all the young people I see have the posture of 90 year old women!

So, you need strong ab muscles for your back health and posture... yet you also have to avoid putting undue pressure on the bottom of the abdominal cavity.

If I were you I'd avoid all the contorting pose type of "exercises" (what I call "yoga-ific"). Also I would avoid trying to roll the body forward into a tiny ball.

With my own back problems I had to learn how to strengthen not only the back muscles but also the abs. One needs to do both, not just one side.

332 Slumbering Behemoth Stinks  Sat, Apr 3, 2010 11:34:40pm

re: #331 freetoken

With my own back problems I had to learn how to strengthen not only the back muscles but also the abs. One needs to do both, not just one side.

The stuff I have been reading lately state that this is key. A balanced core, back and abs, are key to any other gains you wish to make.

And from what I have been reading, you body is pretty clever at protecting itself from injury. If your core is not built up properly to balance other body parts, your body will actually knee-cap your efforts to build other muscles (like your biceps) in order to prevent a potential imbalance that could cause injury.

On the back problems, that's the reason I started with weights in the first place. That, and the "use it or lose it" axiom.

re: #332 Slumbering Behemoth

Floor exercises are recommended for both front and back of the torso. These are the safest (usually.) The net is full of examples, though unfortunately you are just as likely to come across poor examples as good ones.

Indeed, with what you've told me, if I were training you I'd start you off on the floor with alignment/awareness exercises, and prioritize the front/back balance.

However, without actually observing you and interacting with you as you do the routines it is hard to communicate what needs to be said. Even in the gym when I see many people doing floor work (which they probably learn from a "Pilates" or "Yoga" class) I see people make the same mistakes over and over again. Almost always people are straining too much. Often they are bending too much in one direction. Or they are bouncing (saw a woman do that tonight) when they should be still, etc.

Had a great physical therapist at one time, who could stretch me ideally. But some of his underlings were horrible. The body working skills take much study and practice. I learn something new all the time.

I don't think bloggers should ever sue each other for defamation and Blair's done himself no favours here at all but linking to Darryl Mason at 'The Orstrahyun'? Is this the persistent troll D.P. Mason a.k.a. LeftyLatteLover who was banned from Blair's old site years ago and who was exposed as a sock puppeteer - Max Dreswell/Stan Lorne/Sam Lowry/Ferris Fremont/PitchMaster - himself? (Links available but of course they're all to Blair's old site.) Darryl Mason: "UPDATE : Sorry, all comments are closed on this blog for the moment. I'm guessing you can understand why." Yes we can.
