What I learned today: Edwin Howard Armstrong:

Armstrong married Sarnoff's secretary, Marion MacInnis, in December 1922. He gave Marion the world's first portable radio as a wedding gift. Armstrong bought a Hispano-Suiza motor car before the wedding, which they drove to Palm Beach, Florida for their honeymoon. He kept the car until his death. It had no radio. He was an avid tennis player until an injury in 1940, and drank an Old Fashioned with dinner.

Racism has generally reared its ugly head following major civil rights advances in America. This happened after the post-civil war reconstruction period; after the Brown v Board of Education and the voter registration movements in the 1950s and 60s; and now after the election of blacks to high political offices throughout America.
The resurgence of the JBS is a recent manifestation of this typically American racist reactionary phenomenon. Hopefully, as in the past, the bigots will be beaten back and will slink back under their various rocks where they belong.

Best quote in my mind,

"Here we are again - short of money, getting a dictate that we have to do something different from two different sources," he said.

Sums it up. I disagree witht the article's assertion that sex ed is effective in preventing teen pregnancy. The facts are inconclusive at best on this matter. But that said, is this something the DA should be getting involved in and wasting tax payer money on? Politics at its basest.

re: #3 Spare O'Lake
I am so tired of arguing with idiots on financial boards that still call the Civil War, "The War of Northern Aggression." I'm going to get a new online career instead of fighting the vicious white supremacists who are planning for social unrest. Mind you, they think that will be brought on by massive debts throughout the countries of the world. I have to agree with the logic on that part of it. We are BROKE. People do need to be prepared by getting out of debt asap. I do not get the guns & ammo crowd. I'm not against gun ownership, but I'd never own one. Any wimp could take it away from me.

I find the constant anti-Semitism infuriating and ignorant. I'm just stupid for trying to push back the tides of scapegoating and blame for all of the ills of the world. There are millions of people out there actively though hate and passively though ignorance who hate anyone who is not just like them. Now, what was the subject again? Sorry for the rant. It's the middle of the night and the war of words on the 'net never ends.

That also be Captain Scott Southworth. Scott Harold Southworth was lead plaintiff in Board of Regents Univ. Wisc. v. Southworth:

Facts of the Case:

The University of Wisconsin, a public university, requires students to pay an activity fee. The fee supports various campus services and extracurricular student activities including the Future Financial Gurus of America; the International Socialist Organization; the College Democrats and Republicans; and the American Civil Liberties Union Campus Chapter. Scott Harold Southworth filed suit against the University, alleging that the fee violated his rights of free speech, free association, and free exercise under the First Amendment. Southworth argued that the University must grant him the choice not to fund registered student organizations (RSO) that engage in political and ideological expression offensive to his personal beliefs. In granting Southworth judgment, the Federal District Court concluded that the fee program compelled students to support political and ideological activities with which they disagree in violation of their First Amendment rights to freedom of speech and association. The court declared the fee program invalid and enjoined the University from using the fees to fund any RSO engaging in political or ideological speech. In affirming, the Court of Appeals concluded that the fee program was "not germane to the University's mission, did not further a vital University policy, and imposed too much of a burden on [Southworth's] free speech rights."

Question:

May public universities and colleges subsidize campus groups by means of a mandatory student activity fee without violating the First Amendment rights of students who find some campus groups objectionable?

Conclusion:

Yes. In a unanimous opinion delivered by Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, the Court held that the "First Amendment permits a public university to charge its students an activity fee used to fund a program to facilitate extracurricular student speech if the program is viewpoint neutral." Justice Kennedy wrote for the Court that, "[w]hen a university requires its students to pay fees to support the extracurricular speech of other students, all in the interest of open discussion, it may not prefer some viewpoints to others." Justice David H. Souter, in an opinion joined by Justices John Paul Stevens and Stephen G. Breyer, concurred in the judgment only.

Further information:

In 1996, ADF represented Scott Southworth and two other UW-Madison students who claimed their First Amendment rights were being violated because they were forced to pay student fees that funded political and ideological groups with which they disagreed.

He's wrong on the sex-ed issue. I also pointed out the University of Wisconsin case. Don't feel bad about calling him stupid because outwardly we respond to political or legal actions even though if we look further we can find some good in those we sometimes react negatively towards -- especially in the early morning hours -- and there's no shame in feeling a little guilty about those reactions. I guess Aijalon Mahli Gomes isn't pretty enough to find any interest for his release:

US man sentenced to hard labour in North Korea

North Korea has sentenced a US citizen to eight years' hard labour for illegally entering the country, state news agency KCNA has said.

The man, named as 30-year-old Aijalon Mahli Gomes, from Boston, admitted his wrongdoing in court, KCNA reported.

Gomes had worked as an English teacher in South Korea, and reportedly crossed the border from China on 25 January...

No candle light vigils as they did for Laura Ling and Euna Lee. Who will spearhead a diplomatic mission to release Aijalon Mahli Gomes?

There was no immediate comment available from the United States government on the sentencing of Mr. Gomes

The Obama administration has authorized operations to capture or kill a U.S.-born Muslim cleric based in Yemen, who is described by a key lawmaker as Americas's top terrorist threat, officials said on Tuesday.

The decision to add Anwar al-Awlaki, of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, to the target list followed a National Security Council review prompted by his status as a U.S. citizen.

Officials said Awlaki directly threatened the United States. "Awlaki is a proven threat," said a U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity. "He's being targeted."

SNIP

The U.S. target list is secret and it was not immediately clear whether Awlaki was the first American added, as some experts had suggested he would be.

Why the hell did the administration release this information? Doesn't it give Awlaki a head's up?

It got ShortShit's knickers in a twist.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Wednesday warned his US counterpart Barack Obama of a "tooth-breaking" response, as he condemned Washington's new nuclear policy.

"I hope these published comments are not true... he (Obama) has threatened with nuclear and chemical weapons those nations which do not submit to the greed of the United States," Ahmadinejad said in speech broadcast live on state television.

"Be careful. If you set step in Mr. (George W.) Bush's path, the nations' response would be the same tooth-breaking one as they gave Bush," he said.

But Obama warned exceptions could be made for Iran and North Korea, both accused by the West of flouting UN resolutions.

Conflict between Jewish and Moslem students is not uncommon on campuses around the world, but at one university this week the violence reached new levels: A student activist, supporter of Israel, and his friend, also known as an Israel supporter, were attacked Sunday at Carlton University near the Canadian capital, Ottawa.

They were subject to anti-Semitic curses and even threatened with a machete, and felt lucky to have survived the onslaught, they said. The incident was widely covered in the press and even reached national news channels.

Nick Bergamini (22), vice-president of the university's student association, told Ynet that he and his friend Mark Klibanov (20) left a bar in the campus area late at night, when suddenly ten men surrounded them, speaking English and Arabic, calling them "Zionists" and "Jews."

SNIP

But things didn't end there. They decided to go to Ottawa from Gatineau, the campus site, when the crowd had dispersed. On the way, as they passed a parking lot, a car stopped next to them containing three men.

"One of them rolled down the window and said: ‘I am the one who hit you, you f---ing Jew,' although I am not a Jew," Bergamini said. "Two guys came out of the car and one of them tried to kick my roommate.

"One attacker said ‘Open the trunk,' and another guy pulled out a machete that glinted in the street lights. I yelled that they had weapons and we started running as fast as we could. I saw the guy wind up with the machete as I looked back."

Klibanov, interviewed by local newspaper Ottawa Citizen, said that the huge blade, generally used to clear a path through rainforests in South America, just missed Bergamini's head. He said they survived only because they managed to run away quickly.

He too recognized one of the men, but didn't remember how many people had chased them. He added that the men must be found, in order to prevent further attacks.

"The first thing they said before punching my friend is that we were Zionists," Klibanov said. "This situation surprised me, but the intentions of these people did not.

"If you are from the right wing or are a supporter of Israel, it gets around pretty quickly, because Carleton is one of the worst campuses for having a division between Palestinian and Jewish students. It is a really polarized campus between left and right, Jewish and Arab students."

72 MandyManners  Wed, Apr 7, 2010 5:13:02am

Who didn't see this coming in the sumer of 2008?

Ukraine's once deeply controversial bid to join NATO appears to have died a little-noticed bureaucratic death this week, as incoming President Viktor Yanukovich moved to abolish a commission that had been overseeing the country's preparations for eventual entry into the Western military alliance.

Monday's presidential decree scrapping the commission came as Mr. Yanukovich was meeting with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev amid his second official visit to Moscow since being elected in February. Another commission, whose brief was to promote Euro-Atlantic integration, was cut along with a few dozen other advisory state bodies associated with the Western-leaning former president Viktor Yushchenko.

Experts say there's little surprise in the action, since Yanukovich was elected, at least partly, on a platform of repairing relations with Moscow, which had been so infuriated by Mr. Yushchenko's pro-NATO tilt that Russia refused to send an ambassador to Kiev for almost two years.

"It is definitely not the policy of Yanukovich to join NATO," says Oleksandr Sushko, research director of the independent Institute for Euro-Atlantic Cooperation in Kiev.

"Yanukovich's policy is not to move in any direction, but for Ukraine to be a kind of 'bridge' between East and West. The danger is that we are moving into a gray zone, where the security status of Ukraine will become ambiguous."

Ok... we got 2 inches of heavy wet snow last night up here at 8200 feet, and even Denver got snow. And it's still snowing and is to continue until noon. Winter doesn't like to leave Colorado. I've seen snow as late as June, and on top of a lot of the 14000 feet plus peaks, you can see snow at the top all year round.

I'm not scheduled for work today, so I can just sit here and watch it. Girlfriend has to go down hill to work.

Ah, spring snows are lovely! Dangerous but, lovely.

Well, I have my reservations, but I have been pleasantly surprised with many of this administration's decisions regarding military operations. I think that they are getting mostly good advice, and mostly acting in accordance with it. It's hard to demand more, even of your own side :-)

FBI's most wanted is not a "secret" list. It was always intended to be well-publicized, so people would call the authorities.

It comes after at least five people were killed in clashes between police and protesters outside President Kurmanbek Bakiyev's offices.

Hamas authorities should rescind a recent announcement that they intend to resume application of the death penalty in Gaza, which has not been carried out there since 2005, Human Rights Watch said on Tuesday.

The death penalty, which in Gaza would be carried out by firing squad or hanging, is inherently cruel and inhuman, and the death sentences handed down by Hamas military courts violate fair trial standards, the human rights organization said in a statement.

Most of those facing capital punishment in the Strip are affiliated with Fatah or are people whom Hamas military courts have convicted of collaborating with Israel.

On March 24, Hamas Interior Minister Fathi Hammad said the Gaza authorities would implement the death penalty in “the near future” against “agents [of Israel] who have been sentenced to death, regardless of the position of rights groups that reject these kinds of sentences.”

At least 75 paramilitary policemen were killed in a dawn ambush by Maoist rebels in thick forest in central India today. The loss was one of the worst in a single attack by the insurgents in many years and highlights the increasingly serious problem extremist leftwing violence poses to the country.

Several hundred fighters from the Communist party of India (Maoist) appeared to have used mines and small arms against a unit of 120 men from the central reserve police force.

The force was taking part in a months-long operation in the central state of Chhattisgarh aimed at re-establishing state authority in thousands of square miles of territory now under the sway of the insurgents. This year has seen a series of such attacks though the latest is by far the most ambitious and deadly.

An opponent of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez was freed by a court Tuesday after spending more than seven months in jail while awaiting trial for allegedly injuring a police officer during a protest.

Caracas city administrator Richard Blanco, who insists he is innocent and says the charges are politically motivated, announced outside the courthouse that he plans to start campaigning as a candidate for the National Assembly in Sept. 26 elections.

Blanco was freed on condition that he appear in court every 15 days, that he not leave Venezuela without the judge's permission and that he not speak to the media about his case ahead of his trial, defense lawyer Negar Granados said.

Uzbekistan formally evicted the United States yesterday from a military base that has served as a hub for combat and humanitarian missions to Afghanistan since shortly after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, Pentagon and State Department officials said yesterday.

In a highly unusual move, the notice of eviction from Karshi-Khanabad air base, known as K2, was delivered by a courier from the Uzbek Foreign Ministry to the U.S. Embassy in Tashkent, said a senior U.S. administration official involved in Central Asia policy. The message did not give a reason. Uzbekistan will give the United States 180 days to move aircraft, personnel and equipment, U.S. officials said.

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld returned this week from Central Asia, where he won assurances from Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan that the United States can use their bases for operations in Afghanistan. U.S. forces use Tajikistan for emergency landings and occasional refueling, but it lacks good roads into Afghanistan. Kyrgyzstan does not border Afghanistan.

Luckily, the gas company employee I talked to put a record of our conversation in the system because last night I noticed they had turned off my gas. They apologized and gave me $25 off of my next bill but it was too late to get someone out last night to turn it back on so I've been hanging at the house waiting. I bet they take better care of their weapons.

Israeli authorities have allowed shoes and clothes into the Gaza Strip for the first time in three years of the tight economic blockade of the Palestinian territory. But Gazan businessmen say much of the shipment is ruined and their spiralling costs will never be recovered.

Ten containers were allowed into Gaza on Sunday and a further 10 today of goods have sat in storage for three years, costing their owners thousands of pounds in fees and in some cases arriving so riddled with damp that the items are unsellable.

SNIP

The result has been the collapse of private industry in the Palestinian territory, leaving in disrepair the thousands of homes damaged or destroyed in Israel's war last year and allowing the flourishing of a Hamas-regulated smuggling economy through tunnels into Egypt.

The Israeli government says its economic blockade of Gaza will remain until Hamas halts violence, recognises Israel and accepts previous peace agreements. Egypt also keeps its one crossing into Gaza largely closed and has started building a steel underground wall to curb smuggling.

Hamza Abu Helal, who has run a trading business in Gaza City for 37 years, finally received a long-overdue delivery across the Kerem Shalom crossing with Israel on Sunday. But when he opened the container and started going through the yellow boxes of his 13,000 men's shirts – marked "Al Helal, Italy Style" – he found around 80% of the garments were ruined by damp. Now the spoiled shirts are piled in a heap in an alleyway next to his warehouse.

SNIP

What are they smuggling? Gee. I wonder.

NIMBY!

Florida Democrats have sent letters to President Barack Obama, protesting his plans to expand oil and gas drilling as close as 125 miles off Florida's coast.

U.S. Reps. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Alcee Hastings and Corrine Brown wrote to Obama Tuesday, asking for a meeting with Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and presidential advisor Carol Browner, a Florida native who last week said the 125-mile proposed buffer should keep Florida protected.

"The threat your plan poses to Florida's economy is a real worry," the three wrote. "The coasts of Florida play an important role in sustaining the tourism and fishing industries so vital to the state's economy."

The letter comes a day after Tampa Democrat Kathy Castor wrote to Obama, noting that as Salazar himself put it, "there are some places in our country that are too special to drill. Florida's coastline certainly fits that description."

European Union election monitors in Sudan are considering pulling out of the war-torn Darfur region because of concerns over security, the mission's head said on Wednesday.

"If I feel that security conditions are not guaranteed -- not just for the observers but for the people of Darfur -- and if I am not certain these elections will allow for credible monitoring, I will not observe them," Veronique de Keyser told AFP from Darfur's capital el-Fasher.

Darfur, an arid desert region the size of France, has been gripped by a civil war since 2003 that has killed some 300,000 people according to UN figures. Khartoum says 10,000 people have died.

Sudan is to hold its first multi-party general election since 1986 on Sunday, which will include presidential, legislative and local polls.

Opposition parties have accused President Omar al-Beshir of fraud in the landmark vote.

Developing: Riots in Kyrgyzstan have apparently killed the interior minister.

A mob of angry protesters on Wednesday beat up Kyrgyzstan's interior minister, who died shortly afterward, an opposition member said.

Opposition activist Shamil Murat told The Associated Press that he saw the dead body of Minister Moldomusa Kongatiyev in a government building in the western town of Talas.

In the nation's capital of Bishkek, police opened fire on thousands of angry protesters who tried to seize the Central Asian nation's main government building, wounding at least 180.

An opposition leader said at least 17 protesters were killed. An AP reporter saw 12 with gunshot wounds but could not immediately confirm that anyone had died. No authorities were immediately available in Bishkek to comment on the reported deaths.

The protesters were out in force over increases in utility costs and anger over the authoritarian bent of President Kurmanbek Bakiyev.

Expect a much harsher crackdown in light of the murder of the interior minister. This has the potential to get quite ugly.

The first woman to sit on the nation’s highest court said Tuesday she wouldn’t be surprised if fewer justices attend State of the Union addresses after President Obama criticized a recent ruling at this year’s address.

Retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor told several reporters at New York Law School that it was never easy to get justices to attend.

"It is not much fun to go because you put on a black robe and march in and you’re seated in the front row, (you) put your hands in your lap and have no expression on your face throughout the proceedings. You can clap when the president comes in and when he leaves and that’s it. It’s very awkward," she said.

Moscow's against it.

Russia warned the United States on Tuesday that putting conventional warheads on long-range missiles would jeopardize President Barack Obama’s vision of a world free of nuclear weapons.

Two days before Obama is to sign a landmark nuclear arms reduction pact with President Dmitry Medvedev, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also repeated Moscow’s warning it could withdraw from the treaty if US missile-defence plans threatened Russia.

A problem with that program is that it might conflict with various nuclear weapons treaties - and the difficulty of distinguishing between a conventionally laden missile and one tipped with nuclear warheads means that if let's say the Russians or Chinese spot the US launching, they might have to take action by firing their own nuclear tipped missiles back at the US because they wouldn't want to risk losing their strike capabilities. And if the US warns the Chinese or Russians in advance, it might tip off the target of the US strike to prepare for a missile strike.

My fiancee's parents were part of a small Tea Party group that didn't include any racists, either. But when they showed up to a larger event, there were entire groups that were obviously head-to-toe racists, with placards about Obama being a Kenyan, one sign saying "No 'reparations' for health care", anti-illegal immigration signs, etc.

Since my fiancee's mom is not white, she didn't feel so comfy and they left.

I'm sure that there are lots of Tea Party groups without a hint of racism. But at every large meeting, they're infested with racists, Birchers, and just plain lunatics, and nobody has the moral courage to tell the people with the awful signs to leave. It's free speech and association taken to the most illogical extreme; respecting free speech doesn't mean you have to endorse it.

For example, I think that some Israeli policies are counter-productive or wrong-headed. However, I will never join any march or protest against Israeli actions or policies, because i know it will be infested with anti-Semites who aren't objecting to the policies, but to the Jewishness of Israelis. I won't lend my presence or voice to support that.

I think it's a 'birds of a feather flock together' phenomenon. A respectable, sane group will attact sane members. A crazy one will attract crazy members. But the problem is that any large gathering of Tea Party people includes some of those crazy groups-- and the organizers, the guys like Dick Armey, the Birchers, and the rest of them-- they don't care, they'd probably prefer they were all the crazy types.

So you have some decent people joining Tea Party groups, but it's ruined by the nature of the organizers and the lack of any sort of discipline about association. And I think we'll find more and more that the crazy people and the racists drive out the good people.

The Dutch navy claimed a rare victory in the war against international piracy yesterday after marines abseiled from a helicopter to seize control of a captured container ship following a shootout with Somali hijackers.

One Dutch marine was slightly injured during the storming of the German ship MS Taipan, which had been boarded early on Monday by 10 Somali pirates from small boats armed with machine guns. The 15-man German crew of MS Taipan had radioed for help after taking refuge in a secure cabin on board the ship.

Unfortunately, the GOP silence on tea party issue is read as consent. The crazy uncle ain't going away without a swift kick in the butt.

CNN covers the Tea Parties with a black reporter, driving a Volvo and gives a
fair and balanced report:

"Here's what you often see in the coverage of Tea Party rallies: offensive posters blasting President Obama and Democratic leaders; racist rhetoric spewed from what seems to be a largely white, male audience; and angry protesters rallying around the Constitution.

Case in point: During the health care debate last month, opponents shouted racial slurs at civil rights icon Georgia Rep. John Lewis and one person spit on Missouri Rep. Emanuel Cleaver. The incidents made national headlines, and they provided Tea Party opponents with fodder to question the movement.

But here's what you don't often see in the coverage of Tea Party rallies: Patriotic signs professing a love for country; mothers and fathers with their children; African-Americans proudly participating; and senior citizens bopping to a hip-hop rapper."

'Tis but a flesh wound.

TWO women who tried to check a "disabled" relative onto an easyJet flight bound for Germany assured airport staff that he was fine because "he always likes to sleep like that".

But it was obvious to staff at Liverpool John Lennon Airport that Curt Willi Jarant (91), hidden behind dark sunglasses, would never be able to answer the few simple security questions demanded of passengers.

If he had been asked whether he had packed his own bags, he was not in a position to say one way or the other as he was dead.

Police arrested the two women, Gitta Jarant (66), the man's widow; and his stepdaughter, Anke Anusic (44), on suspicion of failing to give notification of a death.

Prosecutors have dropped lying charges against two Navy SEALs implicated in a detainee abuse case.

Petty Officer 1st Class Julio Huertas and Petty Officer 2nd Class Jonathan Keefe still face courts-martial for allegedly not protecting a reputed terrorist after his capture in Fallujah, Iraq. Huertas faces a second charge of impeding an investigation.

Charges that the men lied to an investigator were formally withdrawn Tuesday in response to earlier testimony from a Naval Criminal Investigative Service agent who said he did not read them their rights.

The SEALs and their lawyers met with prosecutors and the judge for the final time in Norfolk before the proceedings move to Camp Victory in Baghdad.

Lawyers for both SEALs requested the change so the men can face their accuser in court. Ahmed Hashim Abed is described as the mastermind of the murders of four American contractors in Fallujah in 2004. The SEALs helped capture him in September.

ROPMA.

A 10-year-old Iraqi boy allegedly recruited by al-Qaeda was about to blow himself in a suicide attack on Wednesday just east of Fallujah when police spotted and arrested him, a senior officer said.

The incident occurred near a police checkpoint in Amariyat Al-Fallujah, a village 15km east of the former Sunni rebel bastion of Fallujah and due west of Baghdad, said Captain Anas al-Issawi.

"The 10-year-old boy had been used by al-Qaeda in the past to place bombs," Issawi said, adding that the child disappeared from his family home in Amariyat Al-Fallujah four days ago.

Nuclear weapons are not evil. Terrifying, yes. But their horrific capabilities prevented a Third World War. It all depends on whose finger is on the button.

Until yesterday's formal announcement of the administration's new Nuclear Posture Review, nukes also kept us safe from a range of threats short of a doomsday scenario: Our enemies risked going only so far. Nukes didn't prevent all wars -- but wars remained local.

Yesterday, we threw away a significant part of history's most successful deterrent.

This looks like an act of reckless vanity on the part of the administration, but let's allow that this weakening of our national defense is the result of misguided idealism. The important thing isn't the politics, but the practical consequences.

But do they taste like chicken?

Hunted for its tasty flesh, the brightly colored forest monitor lizard can grow to more than six feet in length but weighs only about 22 pounds (10 kg), said Rafe Brown of the University of Kansas, whose team confirmed the find.

When I was a kid, we killed a lot of rattlesnakes. They didn't taste like chicken at all...closer to frog's legs (which I lo-o-o-ooove).

Tried alligator a few times...that's more like monkfish than chicken.

I'm guessing the big lizards are somewhere between snake and gator.

I think the 'tastes like chicken' description is basically what people say when they try something very mild...I think it's more of a texture thing. Frog's legs are about the consistency of the meat in between the two small bones in a chicken wing...rubbery.

His comments were that there are youngsters who want to be abused, and he compared that abuse to homosexuality, describing them both as prejudicial to society. He said that on occasions the abuse happened because the there are children who consent to it.
‘There are 13 year old adolescents who are under age and who are perfectly in agreement with, and what’s more wanting it, and if you are careless they will even provoke you’, he said.

335 right_wing2  Wed, Apr 7, 2010 8:23:54am

Just as there are, no doubt, a few racists at tea parties, I'd be willing to argue that there are a few racists at events supporting Obama, and the Democrat health care reform plan.

Nobody would argue that groups like the Klan or Aryan Nation aren't racist. But isn't a group like the 'National Council of LaRaza' ('The Race') just as racist, based on their very name? Isn't 'Black Liberation Theology' a racist idea, as espoused by Obama's former pastor? What about the "New Black Panthers", who used intimidation at voting sites to the extent that a Democrat on the Civil Rights Commission decried the Justice Department dropping the case?

If the 'Tea Parties' are racist because of a relative handfull of cases, then people supporting the Health Care bill, signed by President Obama, are just as racist because of the relative handfull of racists on the left.

You just don't understand... do you. There are racists associating with the Tea Party, we've seen the hundreds and hundreds of them with signs and chants and all that at these rallies. On a lighter note, that traitor to the people of cheeseland is now a grandpa, Vikings' Favre now a grandfather

If Brett Favre returns for a 20th NFL season, you can call him "Grandpa" and not be making fun of his age.

Favre's 21-year-old daughter Brittany gave birth to a son Tuesday, making the 40-year-old Minnesota Vikings quarterback a grandfather.

The little gunslinger weighs in at 7 pounds, 7 ounces.

Grandpa Brett says on his Web site that he and wife Deanna are "very proud" to welcome their first grandchild.

Favre was 19 when he and Deanna -- his girlfriend at the time -- had Brittany in 1989. The couple was married in 1996 and had another child, Breleigh, in 1999. (For those who are mathematically challenged)

The NFL says it knows of no other grandfathers among current players.

Favre led the Vikings to the NFC championship game last season and has not yet decided whether or not he intends to return in 2010. He will turn 41 in October.

And a couple of the organizers of left wing protests aren't racist?

I didn't like the spending under Bush & a Republican House/Senate. It was bad then. Now- it's far, far worse. Bush & the Repubs spent like mad, but compared to what we're seeing now, Bush would make Scrooge look like a spendthrift.

When I start running low on money in my account, I stop spending so much. I can't just go to my boss and say 'I need a raise'. The US (and state) governments need to stop blowing so much of our money on handouts to everyone in sight.

Do check out who organizes these tea parties.

I know... we have about 12 Tea Party groups in a 50 mile radius. I checked up on the organizer of the Tea Party closest to me... Lori Christenson... here is some info about her...

"...Christenson, a former corporate trainer, never thought would have happened in her life."

"So how did a woman who had no prior political experience climb the political ladder so quickly? She became involved in the Tea Party movement. Although Christenson’s prior political involvement stopped after voting, she always felt well informed."

"After the Tax Day Tea Party, which was her first protest, she knew she did not want the momentum to die. She first joined Tea Party groups in Denver but soon found the drive to the meetings too far. Thinking others in the mountain communities felt the same way, she and her husband founded the Evergreen/Conifer Tea Party."

Racist all the way. Right here, in my own community. Fucking scary.

366 MandyManners  Wed, Apr 7, 2010 8:42:35am

For more than a year I have repeatedly pointed out that the Obama Administration's strategy of increasing the level of sanctions against Iran has been a mess. Deadlines set by the U.S. government for September and then December weren't met. Even afterward, the government had not even established publicly (and it seems not even privately) its basic position on what sanctions should be. Congressional proposals for a tougher stance were discouraged and ignored.

Over and over again we were assured, apparently without basis, that Russia and China were going to support increased sanctions. With the Obama Administration in office now for 14 months, Moscow and Beijing seem no closer to supporting such a policy than they were when the process began.

Now there is more news. It is April and there are no immediate prospect for sanctions. Indeed, the issue is not even on the agenda for the UN Security Council this month. In May, the rotating presidency goes to Lebanon, a country in which Hizballah, an Iranian client, has a veto power over every decision. The Lebanese government has already declared that it will be supportive of Tehran.

But the Obama Administration has approved the targeting of Awlaki in Yemen, a US citizen.

The Obama administration has taken the extraordinary step of authorizing the targeted killing of an American citizen, the radical Muslim cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who is believed to have shifted from encouraging attacks on the United States to directly participating in them, intelligence and counterterrorism officials said Tuesday.

Mr. Awlaki, who was born in New Mexico and spent years in the United States as an imam, is in hiding in Yemen. He has been the focus of intense scrutiny since he was linked to Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, the Army psychiatrist accused of killing 13 people at Fort Hood, Tex., in November, and then to Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the Nigerian man charged with trying to blow up a Detroit-bound airliner on Dec. 25.

American counterterrorism officials say Mr. Awlaki is an operative of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, the affiliate of the terror network in Yemen and Saudi Arabia. They say they believe that he has become a recruiter for the terrorist network, feeding prospects into plots aimed at the United States and at Americans abroad, the officials said.
Story continues below ↓advertisement %P% your ad here

It is extremely rare, if not unprecedented, for an American to be approved for targeted killing, officials said. A former senior legal official in the administration of George W. Bush said he did not know of any American who was approved for targeted killing under the former president.

Only other American who might qualify would be Adam Gadahn, who is wanted for treason in the US as there have been several airstrikes that claimed to have taken out Gadahn in the past couple of years.

Still operating under Bush-era policies that President Obama last year called "a mess," the Pentagon will resume military commission hearings for accused terrorists today in a top-secret compound originally designed for the trial of alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheik Mohammed.

War court critics denounced the decision to go ahead with hearings this week, saying that without new rules the Obama administration has yet to complete, the commissions are operating with uncertain procedures.

"It's really like a lame-duck commission," bristled Mike Berrigan, the Pentagon's deputy chief Guantanamo defense counsel.

First up on the war court's agenda is a pretrial hearing in the case of Noor Uthman Mohammed, a Sudanese man who was captured in Pakistan in 2002 and brought here soon after for interrogation as a suspected al-Qaida operative.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder approved Mohammed's military trial in November on charges of conspiracy and providing material support for terrorism for allegedly helping to run the Khalden terror training camp in Afghanistan.

At that same time, Holder approved civilian trials for the alleged plotters of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks -- and this week's hearings also are a reminder that the Justice Department remains undecided on how to proceed with the case of Khalid Sheik Mohammed and his four accused co-conspirators.

Also, I might add that based on the Demographic data I've seen, teabaggers are rather likely to have received a tax break from Obama. Only other American who might qualify would be Adam Gadahn, who is wanted for treason in the US as there have been several airstrikes that claimed to have taken out Gadahn in the past couple of years.

Flake Alert!

A woman who claimed she saw "God in everything" and feared immunizing her daughter because it would inject "disease" into her "perfect" and "divine" human form failed to establish religious grounds sufficient for an exemption from New York state's mandatory vaccination rules, a federal judge has ruled.

Martina Caviezel, a self-proclaimed pantheist, sought a preliminary injunction allowing her to enroll her 4-year-old daughter in a Great Neck, N.Y., pre-kindergarten without getting the shots the state says the child needs. Caviezel relied on Public Health Law &sect2164(9), which exempts children from the requirement whose parents or guardians "hold genuine and sincere religious beliefs which are contrary" to vaccination.

On Monday, in Caviezel v. Great Neck Public Schools, 10-civ-052, Eastern District Judge Arthur D. Spatt denied the injunction, ruling that Caviezel had not established that she held "genuine and sincere religious beliefs which prohibit vaccinations."

Around September 2009, Caviezel submitted a form requesting that her youngest child, C.C., be exempt from the requirement that children be vaccinated against measles, mumps, rubella and other conditions. But, according to the decision, the school principal, Debbie Shalom, told her that her request would likely be denied.

Caviezel, a native of Switzerland, declined to meet with school superintendent Thomas Dolan because "people twist words around sometimes." She sued after her request was denied, alleging civil rights violations.

SNIP

Caviezel was ordained as a minister after taking a one-day seminar at a Buffalo, N.Y., church called "Sanctuary of the Beloved." She said she was not a member of any formal religious organization but described her religion as seeing "God in everything…in the flowers in the spring when the flowers bloom, in the miracle of birthing."

She said she practiced her religion "mostly" by breathing, because by breathing, "I can be present to the presence of God." She also testified that she expressed her beliefs through "gratitude" -- by being thankful throughout the day.

Caviezel admitted that the church where she was ordained had not said anything about immunizing her children during the course she took there.

She also acknowledged that she had read articles about the possible link between vaccinations and autism but had not decided if the claim had any scientific basis.

"One day I read an article about, yes, you should immunize; and then the next day I read an article about, no, you shouldn't immunize," she told the court. "Ultimately, all I can go back to is if I believe in that we are divine in our design, immunizations are not necessary."

I think that conservatism just doesn't mean fiscally responsible anymore to most of the electorate. The term has more or less been jacked by the other movements recruited into the GOP.

Its sort of like the term 'stained glass', which originally had little to do with little panes of brightly colored glass fitted into a copper-lead frame. But thats what it means now.

The family of a terror victim has the right to a jury trial in its attempt to collect $100 million from the Palestinian Authority, a New York appeals court ruled.

Yaron Unger was murdered along with his pregnant wife in Israel in 1996. His survivors and the administrators of his estate claimed that members of Hamas carried out the attack on the orders of the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Palestinian Authority.

The plaintiffs won a $116.4 million declaratory judgment in 2006. This resulted in the freezing of $100 million from a pair of Palestinian pension funds.

Saudi Arabia also is funding the spread of Wahabism in Eatern Europe.

Saudi Arabia is funding lots of bad shit, from terrorism to legal challenges to the rights of women in other Arab countries, to AGW denial. They're a completely corrupt state that has probably been responsible for the funding of more terrorism than any other.

Fences? We don't need no steenking fences.

Somalis with ties to a terrorist organization are believed to be plotting to illegally enter the United States after being mistakenly released from custody in Mexico, a confidential federal law enforcement report said.

The report, obtained by the Washington Examiner, said that 23 Somalis who entered Mexico illegally earlier in the year were caught there, then released in late January.

Only 16 of the 23 people were identified by both Mexican and U.S. law enforcement officials, while the "other 7 are unknown," the report says.

Included in the group is Mohamed Osman Noor, 35, of Somalia, who U.S. officials suspect has strong ties to Al-Shabaab Mujahideen, an Islamist insurgency group in the ongoing war in Somalia with ties to al Qaeda.

Say hello to Sharpe James, D-NJ, who is given a hero's welcome upon his return to Newark NJ after a 1-year stay in federal prison for selling real estate to his girlfriend for $60k and who then turned around and sold it for $600k. Nice that a convicted felon who did nothing for Newark is given a hero's welcome.

His successor - Cory Booker promised to get crime under control - and has been successful in that endeavor, and Newark saw its first murder-free month in decades. That's something that James was never able to do.

Fox had Booker on this week. What a stand-up man!

Women members of the board of directors of the Family Welfare Protection Society (FWPS) are to file a defamation case at the general court in Jeddah following media reports accusing the society of a range of violations.

“What was published recently in some newspapers caused a lot of harm to the society and to the reputation of the members of the FWPS’ board of directors,” said Samira Khaled Al-Ghamdi, a member of the FWPS’ board, adding that the accusations are false.

On the head is right, Charles. I wish I could remember where I saw it, but a while back a TV program ran an interview circa '62-ish with a spokesman for the american nazi party -- don't think it was rockwell, but could have been -- and my blood ran cold, because the list of "political philosophies" he calmly ennumerated were, word for word, the language being used by the "reactionary conservative", fundie-friendly side of things.

Yes. There were not black regular soldiers during the war. Charles referenced a good link about this myth.

There was, in desperation, in the end, an attempt to recruit a battalion that never actually served, but they were still not regular soldiers.

There were, of course, slaves in the Southern Army, as well. Pointing to them as evidence as blacks serving in the Southern Army makes very little sense, given that, you know, they were slaves.

The Consulate General of Israel has joined forces with a variety of Bay Area organizations to present a monthlong series of events celebrating lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender arts and culture.

Out in Israel continues through April 29 with films, dance performance, theater, lectures, panel discussions, music and a weekend retreat for LGBT Jews, their partners and friends.

Something was nibbling at the back of my brain a few minutes ago.

With General Robert E. Lee's manpower reserves quickly draining, on March 23, 1865, General Orders #14 was issued which allowed for the enlistment of Blacks into the Confederate service. Shortly thereafter, a notice was posted in Petersburg's The Daily Express, "The commanding General deems the prompt organization of as large a force of negroes as can be spared, a measure of the utmost importance, and the support and co-operation of the citizens of Petersburg and the surrounding counties is requested by him for the prosecution to success of a scheme which he believes promises so great benefit to our cause...To the slaves is offered freedom and undisturbed residence at their old homes in the Confederacy after the war. Not the freedom of sufferance, but honorable and self won by the gallantry and devotion which grateful countrymen will never cease to reward."

The recruitment effort did bear fruit in Richmond where Majors James W. Pegram and Thomas P. Turner put together a "Negro Brigade" of Confederate States Colored Troops. The Richmond Daily Examiner noted of the unit "the knowledge of the military art they already exhibit was something remarkable. They moved with evident pride and satisfaction to themselves."

As the Confederate army abandoned Richmond on April 3rd, apparently these Black Confederate soldiers went along with General Custis Lee's wagon train on its journey. They would move unmolested until they reached the area of Painesville on April 5. Here they were attacked by General Henry Davies' cavalry troopers.
