McDonnell Apologizes, Adds Slavery Clause

US News • Views: 2,712

Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell has now apologized for not mentioning slavery in his proclamation of “Confederate History Month,” and added a clause declaring that slavery led to the Civil War.

WHEREAS, it is important for all Virginians to understand that the institution of slavery led to this war and was an evil and inhumane practice that deprived people of their God-given inalienable rights and all Virginians are thankful for its permanent eradication from our borders, and the study of this time period should reflect upon and learn from this painful part of our history.

As far as I’m concerned, this changes nothing. It’s still an abysmal disgrace that the proclamation exists at all. It was created at the behest of the neo-Confederate group Sons of Confederate Veterans, and they’re not going to be happy about McDonnell’s backing down.

WHEREAS, it is important for all Virginians (even the dark ones) to understand that the institution of slavery led to this war and was an evil and inhumane practice that deprived people of their God-given inalienable rights and all Virginians are thankful for its permanent eradication from our borders, and the study of this time period should reflect upon and learn from this painful part of our history to continue voting for Republicans.

That’s how he mean to write it.

Repost from last thread:

It doesn’t take away the clause that honors only the sacrifices of the leaders, soldiers, and citizens of the Confederacy, either.

And there is no real apology. It’s a half-assed apology, and that it was a ‘mistake’.

Why was it written the other way in the first place?

What sacrifices did the Confederate leaders, citizens, and soldiers make for the black residents of Virginia?

This is still bullshit.

Repeat from downstairs: You’ve got to wonder what goes through the head of politicians in prominent positions when they do things like this.

Was he totally unable to realize, to begin with, what the original declaration implied?

And, now that he has flip-flopped, doesn’t he realize that the supporters of the original declaration will now view him as a flip-flopper?

“Let us honor our confederate forefathers who fought to keep slavery at all cost, but it’s also important to understand that slavery is an evil and inhumane practice that we are thankful is permanently eradicated from [within] our borders.”

8 Obdicut  Wed, Apr 7, 2010 3:19:54pm

Why did he already state that it was written the way it was because he didn’t consider slavery significant enough?

Was that a ‘mistake’ too?

He seems kind of prone to making these sorts of ‘mistakes’.

Iran ridicules Obama’s “cowboy” nuclear strategy

Iran’s hard-line president on Wednesday ridiculed President Barack Obama’s new nuclear strategy, which turns the U.S. focus away from the Cold War threats and instead aims to stop the spread of atomic weapons to rogue states or terrorists.

Obama on Tuesday announced the new strategy, including a vow not to use nuclear weapons against countries that do not have them. Iran, however, was pointedly excepted from that pledge, along with North Korea, because Washington accuses them of not cooperating with the international community on nonproliferation standards.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said the focus would now be on terror groups such as al-Qaida as well as North Korea’s nuclear buildup and Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Pressuring Iran in its standoff with the West is a particular focus of the new strategy. The exception from the non-use pledge represents a warning to Tehran. But also, the new guidelines aim to show Washington is serious about reducing its own arsenal and about gathering world support for stricter safeguards against nuclear proliferation — a move aimed at further isolating Iran diplomatically.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad derided Obama on Wednesday, depicting him as an ineffective leader influenced by Israel to target Iran more aggressively.

American materialist politicians, whenever they are beaten by logic, immediately resort to their weapons like cowboys,” Ahmadinejad said in a speech before a crowd of several thousand in northwestern Iran.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA:

SECTION 1.
Chapter 4 of Title 1 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to holidays and observances, is amended by adding a new Code section to read as follows:
“1-4-20.

(a) The General Assembly hereby finds and determines that tourism is a great economic resource in Georgia; and historical, heritage, and cultural inheritance are among the tourism industry’s most popular attractions. Georgia’s Confederate heritage, physical artifacts and battle sites, and historic events and persons not only attract visitors, they are potentially of even greater importance and benefit to our state’s economy. Increased development of our state’s Confederate history and heritage as part of the tourism industry will be enhanced through recognizing, celebrating, and advertising that heritage and history.

(b) The month of April of each year is hereby designated as Confederate History and Heritage Month and shall be set aside to honor, observe, and celebrate the Confederate States of America, its history, those who served in its armed forces and government, and all those millions of its citizens of various races and ethnic groups and religions who contributed in sundry and myriad ways to the cause which they held so dear from its founding on February 4, 1861, in Montgomery, Alabama, until the Confederate ship CSS Shenandoah sailed into Liverpool Harbor and surrendered to British authorities on November 6, 1865.

Its a common theme in their circles that the origins of the Civil War had nothing to do slavery, rather that Lincoln only used slavery as an issue later on to rally waning support for the war. As their story goes, Lincoln was originally ambivalent about slavery and was only concerned only with preserving the Union. Allegedly, he would have even kept slavery intact to preserve the Union. Standard Paleocon history lesson there.

So it doesn’t surprise me that one of them would test that theory out in the open water.

38 What, me worry?  Wed, Apr 7, 2010 3:36:13pm

re: #10 LudwigVanQuixote

It’s not a BAD thing, I’ll give you that. But I’m guessing the governor’s IN box was so inundated with hate mail, he had no choice. And he was getting really bad press.

I said on the other thread that I kept having this epiphany that the whole idea of “Confederate History Month” was because people like McDonnell are just pissed off that the Blacks have their own history month. Well hell, I was right.

When I signed the Proclamation designating February as Black History Month, and as I look out my window at the Virginia Civil Rights Memorial, I am reminded that, even 150 years later, Virginia’s past is inextricably part of our present. The Confederate History Month proclamation issued was solely intended to promote the study of our history, encourage tourism in our state in advance of the 150th Anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War, and recognize Virginia’s unique role in the story of America….

So Black History Month was in his mind as he was reminded about the civil war. Pray tell, why was that? He wasn’t intending on including the slaves in his proclamation so just what was he thinking about? I have his number.

I’m ok if he was humiliated to change it. Fine, but I’d like to see the people of Virginia yell so loud that they cancel the whole horrible thing.

39 acacia  Wed, Apr 7, 2010 3:36:37pm

Tea Partiers to police Tax Day rally to search out ‘liberal infiltrators’ attempting to taint the event with racism

Beware liberal infiltrators, Tea Party organizers are looking for you.

Tricksters aiming to crash next week’s nationwide Tax Day protests to taint the activists as racist will have to dodge the eyes of event organizers, Tea Partiers say.

“We are going to very aggressively police the crowd,” said Matt Kibbe, the president of FreedomWorks, who is helping plan Tea Party events both in Washington and across the country, of the April 15th event.

Kibbe said a team will be on the ground during next Thursday’s protest on the National Mall looking to remove anyone displaying any sort of racist behavior. Yet he said the only types of people he expects to show up with that in mind are infiltrators seeking to discredit the protest.

re: #69 darthstar

Liberals will be easy to spot. Their spelling and grammar will be perfect.

Or, they will have ironically misspelled signs.

Years ago, a lefty San Francisco tabloid called a ‘pro-gentrification’ demonstration in the Mission. Hipsters showed up with signs that said things like ‘Make Lofts, Not War’. And our very own Louis Calabro showed up with signs and leaflets insisting that ‘gentrification’ was code for keeping European Americans out of the neighborhood. Louis was not being ironic.

Then years later, I read an anthology of writing by angry young feminists of color, and found an essay that cited this rally as an example of racism in San Francisco in the 90s.

The dear woman who wrote it never figured out it was a gag.

re: #38 marjoriemoon

It’s not a BAD thing, I’ll give you that. But I’m guessing the governor’s IN box was so inundated with hate mail, he had no choice. And he was getting really bad press.

I said on the other thread that I kept having this epiphany that the whole idea of “Confederate History Month” was because people like McDonnell are just pissed off that the Blacks have their own history month. Well hell, I was right.

This is absolutely spot on.

Getting serious, the absolute core of the far right Christofascist has always
been a deep inferiority complex coupled with a whiny sense of entitlement that excludes all others.

If black people have their own history month, and that history shines a light on the very real and grievous sins of the America as a whole and the South in particular, then the weak, and falsely convinced of his own oppression Christofascist, must stike back. For one thing, it destroys his self image of perfect righteousness and of course, rather than working on improving himself like a proper Christian, he will lash out at others.

The most hurtful way to do that is to remind black folks that rednecks like McDonnell once owned them. It is the very viscousness of the attack, the truly childish malice of it, that shows so starkly the weakness that causes it.

You see this inferiority complex also in their response to intellectuals. All of that science and education only shines a light on their own ignorance and inability to for coherent thoughts. They know they have nothing on someone with an actual education in a debate, and they know that they are rightfully mocked for their ignorance. However, rather than taking the time to become educated themselves, they instead choose to lash out.

Any lizard knows that they have won, utterly won any debate with one of these types the second they start whining that you think you are smarter than they are. Of course you really actually are smarter than they are, and they really don’t like that. You are not scared and threatened by new things. They are still figuring out the 19th century.

The world has passed them and they know that sooner or later, they will be left behind (pun intended).

So the response is childish temper tantrums and bold displays of “manliness.” Actual manly men really know that they are and do not feel the need to prove it by whining like sissies all the time or making unneeded threat displays.

Racism itself always has an inferiority complex at its core. If you honestly think you are superior to someone, they are not a threat. There is no need to get cranky. Of course the real driving core of the racist is that he knows he is trailer trash, while a black man is president.

Ok… so, now that I have seen a number of proclamations by a number of states for instigating a Confederate History Month, and reading these proclamations, I see that the slavery issue was missing from all the proclamations that I could find, it makes me wonder why there wasn’t the sort of outrage in the pass that we are seeing about Va. current governor and his proclamation.

These Confederate History Months are really sickening, since, if you read the proclamations and also cross reference the events that go along with these month long celebrations, you will see that they are remembering the confederacy in a very positive and celebratory way, which in my mind, is horrible in it’s content.

So why the sudden outrage over this proclamation? What made the others “respectable?”

101 palomino  Wed, Apr 7, 2010 4:01:01pm

It’s the best (or worst) of both possible worlds for Gov. McDonnell. First he gets the red meat out there for the Johnny Reb base; then he backpedals in order to seem moderate and inclusive. So he projects the proud neo-confederate image, but creates plausible deniability.

There’s almost always some electoral calculus in these matters, but here I’m not so sure. He can’t serve consecutive terms in VA, so this has nothing to do with the next election.

Is he thinking of running for Prez already? While this stance could conceivably help him in GOP primaries, I don’t think the establishment of the party wants to go in that direction; and none of this is a general election plus.

Moreover, this is VA—the new progressive South, where an Obama can win—not SC, MS or AL (where Obama got only 10% of the white vote, lowest in the nation and only half the % Kerry got in 2004).

These classes are designed for intelligent adults - as in the average age of the class is 40 something or more, who are educated and intelligent. The classes are not standard undergrad courses, they go faster because they assume a more genuine interest and ability to focus. However, they also do not assume that the student wants to go on and do this stuff professionally. As such, they are the real McCoy, but quick and to the point on the main ideas - with all the math, but not all the side discussions. They are also not quite up to the level of graduate classes. They do not assume that you know that much.

I did not mean to insult you…
Let’s just say this..I was born trash to many…Where I grew up before Adoption in Firebaugh, Ca.. A trailer would have been high class..
God has been kind to me.. I’m sorry for all the lizards that live in Trailers..

Nice find, Ludwig. I’d like to add the incredibly informative Ted Talk videos [Link: www.ted.com…] - generally in a less than 20-minute format, and of course the MIT Video World archives (not course-ware) at [Link: mitworld.mit.edu…]

Yale also has courses you can take over the internet without joining the skull and bones society

[Link: oyc.yale.edu…]
and UC also has some online
[Link: ocw.uci.edu…]
Also if you are interested in keeping up with cutting edge law on the digital frontier, I recommend the lecture series at the Berkman Center

The others tend to mention slavery, the evils thereof, and etc. whereas this one initially did not until Mcdickhead backed down.

Well, no, I clipped and pasted Georgia proclamation up thread, Charles just posted a link to it… in general…

Evils of what?

Great stuff.

We should create a Lizard archive of real courses on the web that people could get a real education from.

I’ve done that a few times in the past — I post them in spinoffs with the lead of “Lizard Tools” .

We should create a Lizard archive of real courses on the web that people could get a real education from.

I think that part of an education is learning how to educate oneself; the choice and the effort should be up to the individual - and as you probably know, most individuals simply don’t have the leisure or the motivation to spend much time in ongoing education. Thus the success of blogs and forums, which allow for a rapid acquisition of the mixture of facts and opinion that seems to suit the taste and real conditions of their readers. I think the existing system of being able to link to any item that an LGF member feels is information-or- newsworthy works pretty well here. I’d be less sanguine about compiling an archive of courses: there are too many varying interests here, and as I mentioned above, most people just don’t have the time to follow a subject through from beginning to end.

In any case, the three references we’ve given should allow anyone with a real desire and the corresponding motivation to learn an enormous amount on practically any given subject. All one has to do is take a look at the offerings and make a choice. For getting up to speed concerning the 21st century, I strongly recommend the Ted Talks: short and sweet and really to the point - and covering practically every imaginable subject.

You did not insult me, and you weren’t the first to use the term in this thread. I just found your post to be a good jumping-in spot for that comment. Sorry for making you respond!

Another note on the subject: about 40% of New Mexicans live in “manufactured homes”. Some of those homes aren’t bad at all.

And for anyone who uses iTunes, there’s a whole section called iTunes U:

[Link: www.apple.com…]

Yale, Carnegie Mellon, MIT, UC Berkley, and Princeton are among the schools that offer podcasts and videos for free download. It’s worth checking out, IMO.

Wow. Just checked that out.
Remarkable.
