Man Attempts To Light Shoes On Fire On Flight To DIA

A passenger on a flight from Washington, D.C., to DIA reportedly tried to light his shoes on fire during the flight.

ABC News reports that federal air marshals on the flight stopped and restrained the man, who was a passenger on United flight 663 from Reagan National Airport to DIA Wednesday night. United flight 663 landed in Denver at 7:21 p.m.

According to ABC News, the man is from Qatar.

There’s a grim implication:

Two jet fighters flew in from Buckley Air Force Base to meet the flight as it flew the final 40 miles to Denver.

Radical Islamic groups are really trying hard to pull off an attack in the era of Obama. They know it would create serious political divisions in the US.

Yes, they’re not going to let the same scenario happen again without doing something to change the airliner’s course.

14 darthstar  Wed, Apr 7, 2010 7:24:58pm

Just posted this downthread in the comic section:

From Harper’s Index this month:
Average number of arrests made each year since 2001 by all 4,000 Federal Air Marshalls combined: 4
Federal spending this represents per arrest: $200,000,000

But when some asshole tries to blow up a plane and the marshalls stop him, that 200 million seems like a small amount of money.

They are getting really sloppy. Poorly made explosives and they can’t get a well trained crew of 19 together anymore. Just a lone stooge with a dud bomb is the best they can muster these days.

16 Ojoe  Wed, Apr 7, 2010 7:25:24pm

This is a small example, and a warning, of what a certain state is trying to do with a much more powerful explosive; and why, pray tell, are we letting our enemies have a whole country where they can build any weapon, raise any army, and hatch any plot?

We are indeed either mad of foolish to the point of madness.

re: #1 MPH

I’d like to know how did he got through security with explosives?

There’s a scene in either AIRPLANE! or its sequel wherein we see people going through the security check at an airport. A stereotypical Little Old Lady goes through, and sets off the metal detector. Instantly, Security Officer Fife and pals violently tackle her and start putting the cuffs on. While they’re busy with that, a long line of stereotypical, keffiyeh and balaclava-clad PLO types casually stroll through, openly carrying their AK-47s, hand grenades, RPGs, and (IIRC) a wheelbarrow filled with blocks of plastique.

Unfortunately, that’s pretty much the way we’ve done things here since 9/11. All we know how to do is be reactive, and in only the least useful ways.

I guess we should take it as a positive sign that terrorists have proven to be rather ineffectual lately, in the US anyway. We have demonstrated rather effective countermeasures.

I will not, however, hold my breath waiting for whoever is being driven by the bombing ideology to stop. I’ve reconciled that for as long as I live we will be dealing with this issue.

United Flight 663, a Boeing 757 with 157 passengers and six crew members aboard, landed safely at Denver International Airport, airline and airport officials said.

Could be but I’ve had a diplomatic passport before and they are fantastic. Many airports have separate lines and they aren’t allowed to search items designated as Diplomatic Pouch. It could be the method used to smuggle items onto a plane.

Simple solution: suspend diplomatic immunity - for everyone. Don’t just make it Qataris, or Iranians, or Saudis…include the English, Germans, French, Russians, Chinese…drop the whole fucking thing. Either they’ll send diplomats who can behave, or they won’t send anyone at all. And volunteer to hold our diplomats to the same standards overseas…so they know we’re not just being isolationist.

I’ll bet anyone $20 that if it wasn’t an actual incident and was a diplomat, that Obama is accused of covering up for a real attack.

re: #11 Charles

Radical Islamic groups are really trying hard to pull off an attack in the era of Obama. They know it would create serious political divisions in the US.

In “Force 10 From Navarone,” Robert Shaw and Harrison Ford, under the direction of a British demolitions expert, place several charges deep inside a dam. Their plan is to blow the damn, sending tons of water slamming against the pilings of a bridge downstream, preventing the Germans from crossing with their heavy artillery and annihilating the partisans on the opposite shore.

Knowing that giving the charges a long fuse (giving them a chance to escape) will increase the chances of it being discovered and extinguished, they light a short fuse and walk slowly down the tunnel, fully expecting to die. But when the charges go off, it appears that nothing has happened. However, the explosions have created small cracks in the damn, upon which millions of tons of water begin to work.

Sometimes I wonder if 9/11 has been like that. Briefly it pulled us together, but now we are so deeply divided, I worry that another major attack will splinter us completely. Or maybe I’m wrong and it will draw us together again. In a sane world, that would be the natural thing to happen. Unfortunately, we now live in a Bizarro world where pundits who claim to love America work overtime to divide us, turn us against each other, in the name of ratings.

The suspect has been named: Mohammed Al Modadi, a third or fourth ranking diplomat in the Qatari embassy in Washington.

He can’t be prosecuted if he has diplomatic immunity, but he can be sent home. After that, he can expect a meeting with the foreign minister and a new post as chute cleaner at the local camel dung processing center.

I hope he gets spanked, just the same. You just don’t make those kind of “jokes” on a plane or in an airport. There was zero tolerance for that crap even before 9/11.

Not necessarily true.

I once, was on a tour of the Pentagon as part of my boyscout troop. At one point a bit outside the gift shop at the top of my lungs shouted “Don’t use that Vending machine, there’s a nuke in it! Like in that movie!” To one of my fellow scout, having recently scene sum of all fears.

Even for my ADHD brain it only took about 10 seconds to realize what stupid thing to say that was.

I am glad to say that no one beside members of my scout troop paid attention to what I had said.

Granted I was only 12-13 years old at the time, but still….

F-16’s escorted the plane, we went to a high alert status, did most everything right, but thankfully it looks like a idiot joking.

101 reine.de.tout  Wed, Apr 7, 2010 7:50:51pm

At MSNBC:

A half hour before landing, an air marshal smelled smoke and confronted a man emerging from a bathroom who claimed he was trying to set his shoes on fire, WNBC reported.

It was uncertain if anything actually was on fire or if this was a joke, NBC reported. Investigators were looking to see what might be in the man’s shoes.

Sources told NBC News that the passenger who was subdued was a Qatari diplomat who would have full diplomatic immunity.

After the pilot declared an emergency, military jets scrambled and escorted the jet into Denver, where the plane remains in a secure area, NBC affiliate WRC reported.

If it turns out to be a bad joke, a) the so-called left will use it as an excuse for letting a whole lot more Saudi students in on unsupervised visas, and b) there will be an immediate reduction in the number of air marshals.

And meanwhile, no matter who is president, the next, bigger, eviler 9/11 remains unstoppable.

But exactly because the fringe now has a disproportionately loud voice not only in Islam but also in American politics, it’s even more important not to get sucked into that vortex.

Take a cue from one of Charles Johnson. He runs a blog called LittleGreenFootballs. As The Daily Beast’s Jon Avlon notes, “Johnson had risen to prominence as a committed anti-jihadist — a cause he continues to fight. ‘I used to get pretty nasty emails from radical Islamists,’ he told me, ‘but the stuff I’m getting now from right-wingers is an order of magnitude worse.’“

Rather than leap to the Left in disgust with the Right, Johnson announced his independence from the partisan puppeteers. His camp is his own. He belongs to his conscience.

Alot of people seem to think so. But I would think not. He’ll probably get home and get little more than a private tongue lashing. Why don’t people who do stupid things like this ever face REAL consequences ? How many idiots have we heard about since 9-11 that have caused airports to get shut down, planes diverted, and jets scrambled ? It pisses me off that they get away with wasting time, resources and money with their behavior.
