What Racism at the Tea Parties?

Wingnuts • Views: 3,177

At the Baton Rouge Tea Party on April 15, 2009, with tea bags hanging from his ears, a neo-Confederate confronts an African American who asks why he’s flying the Dixie flag.

Bad craziness ensues.

Youtube Video

(Hat tip: Trout.)

Am I allowed to use “teabagger” to describe this guy when he hangs them from his own ears? And then goes out in public like that?

Yeah. He's not old enough to be out of college, I don't think, and he's very calm and rational in the face of, well, a man with a Confederate flag, and teabags hanging from his ears.

Repost from the last thread but with a different Killgore quote...

re: #43 Killgore Trout

I'm guessing Georgia or Alabama from the accents. There was a new round of Tea Parties today but I'm not sure how old this video is.

That ain't better! I can't stand Neo-Confederates. If that guy is from Georgia, it seems he's in need of reminding about what happened when his ilk decided to true conclusions with Abraham Lincoln. To that end:

My goodness, how many conspiracies can one believe in at one time!

The more conspiracies you "SEE"**, the wider-open your eyes are. Disbelieving any given conspiracy theory increases your Sheeple Quotient, and we can't have that.

** Conspiracies are never "believed in", as they are not matters of faith and therefore opinion. Conspiracy theories are SEEN, as in, "I am sufficiently enlightened and tuned in to the Real Story that I can SEE things the poor Matrix-dwellers around me can't or don't want to see."

That explains the resemblance. Parker Center was built as a high rise government building. The modern Louisiana State Capitol Building is also a high-rise building. It was built under Huey Long (the famous 'Kingfish') in the early 30's.

This is really astute. I think you have a major insight into the dynamics here.

The conspiracy theorists are much like a cult in this way. They have an in crowd of the enlightened and all the deluded lesser folks on the outside. Much like a cult, they have their own lingo, and the clustering behavior of an echo chamber that reinforces orthodoxy and rewards ever more outlandish behavior.

It's a cult, complete with cult gurus and the intense shunning of outside views or facts which contradict the "realities" of the cult.

I just looked it up on Wikipedia, and apparently Dr. King WAS born Michael King (no Luther) and named after his father. His father changed both of their names when he was young in honor of Martin Luther. I don't know why this man would keep referring to him as Michael Luther King other than to belittle him and equate him with Obama, because he's black and they also think he forged his birth certificate and thus they're both in some way "illegitimate."

Yeah, what exactly is the wingnut fascination with David Koresh?

You have a case where a cult of crazies, shot at police and then federal officers with high powered weapons and committed suicide by burning themselves up.

I have always felt terrible for any women and children in that blaze (at least those who were not shooting) but how can anyone defend the actions of the cult or say that the government was wrong to confront them? The harshest thing that can be said is that the FBI, rather than going in quickly enough to secure the place, did not control the situation enough to prevent the cultists from burning themselves.

Now I am not someone who believes that the government never abuses power or that force is always called for and I hate the "hut hut" mentality, but, it seems really clear in this case who the people in the wrong were.

While I'm a fan of German beer, I don't tell others about it by using a certain flag from roughly 65 years ago because it says something about me that I am not. I like to call it "sending mixed signals." At best, I don't know what I'm a callous idiot, and, at worst, I'm advertising that I think ethnic cleansing is a valid method of advancing society.

Yes, you can be a fan of less intervention from Washington, and I will wholeheartedly agree with you. However, using that particular flag presents the same sort of mixed message. At best, it shows that you are completely immune to the offensive nature of that flag, and, at worst, you're advertising that you are upset that slavery is gone.

But then, I'm not a complete nutter, so this makes complete and perfect sense to me. (sigh)

The FBI did screw up with the Armored Engineering Vehicle they used to open holes in the compound with, but I understand why thy did not want to risk an assault. An assault on a heavily defended building like that usually requires the attacks to have a numerical superiority of at least 3-to-1 and they may take 33-to-50% casualties even if successful. Given those dismal facts, the FBI tried something that they though would not put their men at risk.

At that point, there can be no doubt of the racist nature of these assholes. Anyone opposed to the Civil Rights Act or the Voting Rights Act for any reason is announcing his racism in the most stark language. Any claim they make to value American liberty or democracy is beyond is a lie.

OK. So going by those dates:

1776-1787 : This would be the time between the Declaration of Independence and the Constitutional Convention. HOWEVER, the American Revolution ended in 1783 with the Treaty of Paris. Why the extra four years?

The War of 1812
The Civil War
Waco
Ruby Ridge
The OKC Bombing -- this one's a bit fuzzy on the left side of the photo, but I can make out the date
Pearl Harbor
Kennedy assassination
9/11

93 Shiplord Kirel  Sat, Apr 10, 2010 7:15:47pm

Confederate victory in the Civil War is probably the favorite subject of alternate history writers. Even Winston Churchill wrote one, If Lee Had Not Won the Battle of Gettysburg? The title of course shows typical Churchillian irony, and is written from the viewpoint of a historian in the alternate world where Lee did in fact win and the Confederacy gained independence.

Harry Turtledove, the consensus "master of alternate history," has written two unrelated works based on a Confederate victory; Guns of the South (which involves intervention by time travelers who provide Lee with AK-47s) and the lengthy (11 volume) "Timeline 191" series that starts with How Few Remain and ends with the Union and Confederacy fighting a WW2 analog in the 1940s.
One of the best works in this category, imho, is Ward Moore's Bring the Jubilee, written in 1953 when there were still living survivors of the Civil War.
All three of these writers portray the long term results as bleak, if not catastrophic. Now, obviously a science fiction writer can create any outcome desired but Churchill and Turtledove in particular are known for their profound historical insight. To a well-informed reader their negative outcomes are quite plausible and almost no qualified historian has written an alternate history in which southern victory is portrayed as a positive good.

According to the Declaration of Causes of Secession for South Carolina, Texas, Mississippi, and Georgia, slavery had everything to do with secession.

Opening paragraphs of the Mississippii declaration:

"In the momentous step which our State has taken of dissolving its connection with the government of which we so long formed a part, it is but just that we should declare the prominent reasons which have induced our course.

Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth. These products are peculiar to the climate verging on the tropical regions, and by an imperious law of nature, none but the black race can bear exposure to the tropical sun. These products have become necessities of the world, and a blow at slavery is a blow at commerce and civilization. That blow has been long aimed at the institution, and was at the point of reaching its consummation. There was no choice left us but submission to the mandates of abolition, or a dissolution of the Union, whose principles had been subverted to work out our ruin."

Evening lizards.

When I moved to Virginia from Connecticut back in 1990 I was labeled a Damn Yankee. The locals gave me a hard time telling me how the South won the Civil War and the history books were wrong. I felt like I had moved to a different country. Down here I and all the other northerners who moved here are the enemy. Up north we learned about the Civil War in history class then moved on. They are still fighting the war down here.

As far as their politics go, it's been my observation that they have no idea about who is running, who is in, and what the issues, forget about asking them who the politicians are. Ask who won the wrestling match on Monday night and you will get a play-by-play of the action, ask who the VP & Secretary of State are and you get a blank stare.

This is Virginia...I can imagine it must be worse the further south you go.

In talking about slavery, segregation and civil rights, it must be remembered that politics of the time is very different than the politics of today. Trying to assign a 'liberal' or 'conservative' character to those who opposed civil rights and integration is neither simple or applicable.

For example, the notorious Bull Conner who let loose the dogs on civil rights was a Democrat, as was Orval Faubus, the Governor of Arkansas who blockaded the Little Rock 9 from entering the High School. It was Republican President Dwight Eisenhower who enforced the court ruling that ordered the integration that was to eventually end segregation. The KKK was initially established as an armed wing of the Democrat Party.

The idea that one side or the other can claim the moral high ground on the matter of racism and segregation is utterly absurd and disingenuous. The list of culpable Republicans and Democrats is long and equally repugnant.

Think stones and glass houses.

The real issue of import is what America will look like tomorrow and in the future.

:( Wow. Oregon and Washington sound like a completely different planet.

You know who watches wrestling in the northwest? Kids, disabled people, and dirtbag types who know the meaning of "kayfabe" who were fans of Roddy Piper back in the day, because he lives here. :D

Wrap your head around this one - These are the very same people that every speaker at the SRLC were courting today. They may as well have been directly speaking to these people in this video one on one.

"Please vote for me (or send me money.) I'm with YOU. We don't need to come right out and say it (wink-wink.) But I agree with you 110% on every issue important to you (let's get that black guy out of the White House being #1, 2 and 3.)"

And yet they don't have even the faintest notion that they're becoming an ever-shrinking demographic in this country, and without the at least 25% of the votes of the very same people they're insulting and alienating every, day more and more, with this poisonous garbage, they'll never win the White House again.

Martial Law: Coming to a Neighborhood Near You?

The U.S. government has used martial law on numerous occasions, most often to quell domestic disturbances in specific locations around the country. According to the United States Constitution Online, during the War of 1812, Andrew Jackson imposed martial law in an area of New Orleans. When a judge demanded Jackson produce, through the writ of habeas corpus, a man arrested for sedition, Jackson ordered the arrest of the judge.

War of 1812 involved an attempt to invade Canada, and the Canadians kicking US ass.

How do I know this? When I studied War of 1812 in high school (just a few years after it happened) I went across the border with some classmates to learn "their" version.

Well, we did hammer them on Lake Erie, Lake Chaplain, and at Chippewa. That said, Canada proved able to defend itself quite well and they are justified in being proud of that.

You're correct, that guy is the person being courted by the SRLC.

Another War of 1812 conspiracy. Again from Rense:

The War of 1812 was instigated by the Rothschilds to force the renewal of their charter for the Bank of the United States. When this charter was vetoed by President Andrew Jackson in 1836, the Jews precipitated a financial panic and set up their plan to bring about the Civil War, which would simultaneously destroy the American Republic and despoil the wealthy Christian families of the South

The teabagger in question does mention the Rothschilds so I'll assume this is what he means by 1812.

Oh, and that crap was written by the anti-Semite Eustace Mullins.

Mullins was accused of antisemitism by the Anti-Defamation League. In 1968, Mullins authored a tract, The Biological Jew (Staunton, Va., Faith and Service Books, Aryan League of America, 1968), which includes the following statement about Nazi antisemitism: "Nazism is simply this — a proposal that the German people rid themselves of the parasitic Jews. The gentile host dared to protest against the continued presence of the parasite, and attempted to throw it off." The book also claims that Jews "drink the blood of innocent gentile children" in religious ceremonies, and that this practice represents the essence of Judaism. He was a guest on The Political Cesspool, a radio show.

re: #148 SanFranciscoZionist

Yeah. Somehow what they want to be called isn't their 'real' name, and by using their 'real name' you take away their power and reveal them as fakers.

Deeply weird. It would make sense in some animist systems, but it's sort of interesting to see people I assume to be mostly Protestants taking up this sort of thing.

Actually it isn't that at all. It's a guy thing and a low brow guy thing at that.

Men are very pecking order conscious. Only people who are close to you use your first name or much less a diminutive.

By pointedly calling someone by a diminutive, you are insisting that you are not his equal, but rather his superior. It is the sort of move classically done by weak betas who need to assert themselves through status or threat displays in order to over compensate.

Note in passing how W. Bush was widely despised for calling people nick-names all the time. If you are in your circle of friends and they use a nick name, it is cool, you are all part of the same group and that is what nick names mean in that context. If you are not in that circle, he is telling you your status by renaming you.

It is a very basic form of insult.

On the flip side of that picture, notice how we never say the name of G-d.

The anti-Catholic loon Jack Chick (whose cartoon tracts have magically appeared under windshield wipers all over America for 40 years now) has claimed that the Jesuits instigated the Civil War, though possibly with the Juice as co-conspirators. I wish we would read more stories like this in the MSM. They don't like to print positive stories about our military....that was evident during the Iraq war.

Afghan students getting green thumbs in Ghazni Province

GHAZNI PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Approximately 5,000 Afghan students at Sanayee High School in Ghazni province are learning not only about math, history and geography, but also about agriculture.

The Agribusiness Development Team in Ghazni, whose members are from the 36th Infantry Division of the Texas Army National Guard, led a small team of U.S. service members to the all-male high school where they spoke to the assistant principal to verify the completion of a school project, April 8.

The project, which is similar to Future Farmers of America , uses small square-foot gardens and aims to give students a chance to work with the soil.

“Once we show the students physically how to plant trees and seeds, it will encourage them,” said Abdul Sabur, the school assistant principle.

The ADT also learned that agricultural teachers were scarce. They offered to train the current agricultural teachers, and suggested a field trip for the students to Jungal Bagh farms, where they could see the work of agricultural experts in progress.

“Really, what it comes down to, is that agriculture is very important to the Afghan people, and we need to reach them at a very young age,” said U.S. Army 1st Lt. Rodney Robinson, agribusiness marketing specialist . “What better way to reach them than through high school, because agriculture is one of the main sources of income for the Afghan people.

During their discussion with the assistant principal, the ADT discovered that the school was very popular with its students.

About 350 students will graduate this year, and 90 percent will be going to a university,” said Sabur.

It's great to know a new generation will learn to grow something other than opium poppies.

"I have lots of friends aligned with the Tea Party, and none of them are racists."

So, by virtue of that and that alone, we're supposed to take it on good faith that there's no inherent racism in the Tea Party? That racism isn't the dominant, prevalent theme of the Tea Party as a whole?

If you (and you know who you are) feel the need to come on this board and offer ANY defense whatsoever of this retarded shamble of a party/movement/whatever the fuck you want to call it, then you get no respect from me at all. Period.

Afghan students getting green thumbs in Ghazni Province

It's great to know a new generation will learn to grow something other than opium poppies.

It's nation building I can get behind. Teaching Afghans how to grow more crops and better themselves is the way we can make of Afghanistan no longer viable as a terrorist haven.

The only defense I ever hear from people on this board, when it comes to the Tea Party and racism is:

"I have lots of friends aligned with the Tea Party, and none of them are racists."

So, by virtue of that and that alone, we're supposed to take it on good faith that there's no inherent racism in the Tea Party? That racism isn't the dominant, prevalent theme of the Tea Party as a whole?

If you (and you know who you are) feel the need to come on this board and offer ANY defense whatsoever of this retarded shamble of a party/movement/whatever the fuck you want to call it, then you get no respect from me at all. Period.

The anti-Catholic loon Jack Chick (whose cartoon tracts have magically appeared under windshield wipers all over America for 40 years now) has claimed that the Jesuits instigated the Civil War, though possibly with the Juice as co-conspirators. The idea was to bring down the south, since the Papacy was making good progress in its plans to dominate the north but had no such chance in the solidly Protestant south.

The racism is there.

The plan all along, I believe, was to suck in normal people using nice, benign, friendly language about what these things were about, and then the real agenda would come out. As we just saw in this video. I was at the first Baton Rouge event, and it was different altogether from this. But the organizers were there, just having a big time, I'm willing to bet, chuckling at how many people they managed to sucker in. Looks to me, though, like they're on a downhill slide, at least here. That place was covered with people the time I went.

Here's the thing. I opposed us going into Iraq. And I ain't totally changed my mind yet.

I didn't go to any of the marches or protests, and God knows, in my neck of the woods, we had them coming out of our ears. Why? Because by then, ANSWER and some less savory fellow-travellers had emerged as the dominant voice in the anti-war movement, and there was no way in hell I could march with that crowd and tell myself it was OK because most of us just didn't want to invade Iraq.

I know people who made that decision both ways, and I still feel that those who decided to go made a bad choice.

So I don't buy the idea that you can stand out with these people and still be there just for whatever good ideal you hold in your heart. Can't be done.

God. Poor Kerensky. My dad took some college courses from him in political science.

Wow, that had to been an unique experience. I always wondered what would have happened if Kerensky and the provincial government hadn't been overthrown by the Bolsheviks. I don't know a lot about Kerensky honestly. Not a guy you see books on.

re: #347 Sigma_x

What's an "upding?" (I'm new around these here parts.)

In the comment boxes, you can click the green "+" if you like a comment (UPDING!), or the red "-" if you don't.

You can click the heart button to save to your favorites, which you can access when you're logged in by going to "My Favorites" (upper left - in the log in box).

You can click on the number to the left of the minus sign to see how many updings/downdings you have and who did what to you.

You can click on the "!" to the right of the heart if you want to either report or recommend a comment to Charles.

If you want to search LGF for a comment by a particular person, go to "search LGF", and type in your search thusly:
"user:theperson's nic"

When you make a comment, look at the bottom of the comment box, there are instructions there for how to embed a video in your comment. Also how to enter special characters.

There's more, that's just all I can think of right now.

re: #295 Sigma_x

Period.

Well it ain't my usual thing but I'm willing to try, I cannot claim to speak at all to how any percentages of the teabaggers feel on any particular issue but then again neither can anyone else. I truly believe that many of them are just ordinary people that have fallen for being lied to consistently and repetitively. The majority of the older retired population do not use the internet regularly and if they use it at all it is for email and not for searching the newslinks to learn the truth about issues.

Yes there are common racists, white supremacists, klanners, and birchers amongst them but I do not for a minute believe that they are the majority. They are just using the others to once again gain their fifteen minutes in the spotlight and continue their increasingly futile battle to recruit new members.

It isn't that the tea party is overtly and completely racist, they aren't, what I have a problem with is their literature and speeches filled with "dog whistles." Well that and the occasionally dropped comment that makes it obvious that they are aware of the racist component and willing to pay lip service to it in a limited way in order to keep that support active.

They think that they can lay down with the pigs without getting too dirty and are willing to do it to swell their numbers. That doesn't make them actively evil it just makes them every bit as stupid as the GOP was when it thought it could pay lip service to the R.R. and the Theocrats without ever giving them any influence over the party.

We all have seen how well that worked out...

Well said. The smarmy-quotient on this board is off the charts, and yet you took the time to articulate a reasonable response. Thanks.

I consider myself a liberal/progressive. But you couldn't - at gunpoint - get me to offer up even a half-hearted defense of, like, Code-Pink or some of the more outlandish elements of that wing of the party.

And yet you got a whole shit ton of people on this board who are quick to jump all over a guy's ass (as long as it's not Charles, then they keep quiet) if he so much as makes even a passing negative reference to shit-bag orgy that is the Tea Party.

Count to 10. Walk away from the computer. Type out an enraged response and then delete it. Sometimes it's better to let things slide.

Sigh...it isn't any different than any other forum or comment based blog, older members with posts in the tens of thousands need to be treated with some small amount of difference even when they are having a "bad day" and are being a bit cranky.

The other members who recognize the regulars name and not yours see you as attacking "one of them," it is normal human behavior. Normal "Net" etiquette and conventions say that you have to be at least slightly differential to those older members until you have at least three or four months of regular posting under your belt.

This is true everywhere, it isn't "censorship" or a problem with the site, it is just long term posters sticking together and acting like, well, long term posters do...

Let's put it this way-- my all-time go to films for a laugh are Blazing Saddles and Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle. They never fail to get me out of whatever funk I'm in . It's just my sense of humor, I guess. Heh.

I LOVED the Cartman/KFC plot, especially when Cartman started snorting chicken skin. The whole thing was genius.

When I was a kid, I could watch as much TV as I wanted, provided it was PBS, since that was considered educational. It was, but not in the way my mom and stepfather probably figured.

How could Snork compare with Rix, his little sidekick? I mean this is one case where the "alpha wolf" Robin is more ballsy than Batman.

And then there are the screen berets. Really, they are a whole legion of marines in their own minds who honestly haven't lifted anything heavier than a bacon burger in the last twenty years? How can Snork compare with that type of train wreck comedy?

OR what of Iron Fist who supplements his manhood with stroking big guns. I mean really, need I say more?

Ok, I'm totally late to the thread, and while I managed to get most of the dates off the top of my head, I was born two decades after the Kennedy assassination, so the date isn't burned into my brain, and I had to look it up. JFK was assassinated on 22 Nov 1963 and LHO was shot two days later on 24 Nov 1963.

If you check wikipedia for significant events on 23 Nov 1963, you'll see that this was the date of the television debut of Dr. Who. I'm pretty sure that's what he's referring to, rather than any events surrounding the JFK assassination.

TRON was one of my favorite movies from my youth. Sure, it came well after Star Wars, and the special effects were not nearly as good, and the characters were cardboard, but the depiction of the inside of a computer was fascinating. And I loved the lightcycle battle.

Can't wait for the sequel. Bridges is in it, Boxleitner...should be a good'un. I wonder...is this the longest wait there's ever been for a sequel? I think the original came out in 1982... 28 years.

re: #189 researchok

You're talking Republicans and Democrats -- the liberal/conservative difference is 100% clear on this. If you are against civil rights, you cannot be a liberal. It's one of the keystones of the liberalism.
