Tales to Astonish #67 (May 1965)

Lifestyle • Views: 3,714

Tonight’s photo from the Lizard Collection is issue #67 of “Tales to Astonish” (one of Marvel’s “farm team” comics), published in May 1965, featuring the Incredible Hulk and one of Marvel’s lesser efforts, Giant Man. This cover’s cool because it’s probably where director Ang Lee got the inspiration for one of the scenes in his not-very-popular film version of The Hulk.External Image

Italian health workers arrested in alleged plot to assassinate Afghan governor

Three Italian medical workers are among nine people who were detained in an alleged plot to kill an Afghan provincial governor, officials said Saturday.

They were detained after suicide-bomb vests, hand grenades, pistols and explosives were discovered in a hospital storeroom in Lashkar Gah, the capital of the southern province of Helmand, a spokesman for the provincial government said.

Police were tipped off about a plot to kill Helmand's governor during a future visit to the hospital, spokesman Daud Ahmadi said Saturday.

A video of the raid obtained by Associated Press Television News shows British troops accompanying Afghan police, soldiers and government officials to the city's Emergency Surgery Center for Civilian War Victims, run by the Italian private group Emergency.

In a storeroom, boxes are opened containing what appear to be bullets, pistols, hand grenades, and bags of explosives. A British soldier is heard saying that an explosives disposal unit was on its way.

Three foreign staff members are then shown sitting on outdoor benches, their identification cards visible but names unclear.

Good. It deserves at least a second reading. The real eye-opening moment wasn't when I realized what the villain had done, but that he really was right (in the context of a world that Moore made clear was 100% destined for nuclear war).

We used to have an "Animal Country Safari" nearby. Hippos are apparently escape artists. One, got out, went 3 miles or so, and camped out in a pond. She was there for weeks, while people decided how to try to retrieve her. This is in Southern California. Not a lot of water, but it was spring. Sadly the "recovery" effort failed, she was shot with tranks, but was facing downhill when they took effect, and smothered.
Still, "Bubbles" got out & died a free Hippo.
The cheetahs rolled in the oil they sprayed on the raods to keep the dust down. They were grey/green & you couldn't really see their spots.

It's pretty sad, most of the time, to see animals in captivity.

I used to hear people say that the best way to avert nuclear war on a global scale would be for a limited one to happen. Usual candidates were Pakistan and India.

And I'm sure there are some who might think that engineering a localized eco-catastrophe might be the best way to "wake people up" and avert an AGW catastrophe on a planetary level.

Me, I'm with Rorschach.

2) Dark Knight
3) Watchmen
4) Days of Future Past
5) God Loves; Man Kills

I don't know if it's been re-printed recently, but the Proteus storyline in the preceding issues (around #125) was also excellent. In fact, the entire Claremont/Byrne run is excellent.

Yeah, Claremont/Byrne was exquisit.

Me, I'm with Rorschach.

Again, I'm only looking at the problem as it's presented in the graphic novel. I don't agree with its message as it applies to the real world. If I found myself in that world, though? Nah, I couldn't side with Rorschach. In the end all the antagonist did was buy the world some time, but I still can't think such a fanatical devotion to the truth would be worth the consequence of annihilation.

The AGW comparison is interesting. I think it's more appropriate as I accept its inevitability, but I'm thinking we have more time. I can be delusional like that.

Me, I'm with Rorschach.

The single most terrifying moment of reading The Watchmen is when you realize that Rorschach is the closest to sane of any named character in the book. In a way, I didn't care at the end - my tears had been spilt earlier in the story when you knew that Rorschach was right but couldn't win. That hurt in a way that only genre lovers can understand.

Well, I went straight to Netflix Instant (for people who two-day gratification isn't fast enough), but I'll have to wait for the DVD version.

One of the other recommendations that popped up was, for some reason, "Jennifer's Body", with Megan Fox. Also not available for instant gratification, but in honor of Hoops I went and checked out the availability on YouTube.

There are about a dozen YT links that promise the whole movie for free, but when you click on them, "unfortunately it's been removed for copyright reasons, so go to this link to watch it here".

All of those links take you to a site that demands you first "accept one of these offers from our fine sponsors". In other words, they're scams that sign you up for some mothofraggin ring tone service or other.

Except one YouTube site offers the whole movie for free and hasn't been taken down yet.

Only problem is, it's in German.

Not a problem for me.

Behold the advantages of a humanistic, language-oriented education!

I'd say don't. If people found out who you are after you'd gone to town on their work, you could be in for a rough time.

Ask Charles if you're not sure.
Nutters abound. Your locale is defined.
YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE TRACEABLE.
Charles has moved, IIRC multiple times, to ensure his personal safety.
This is not what you want to HAVE to do.
My 2 cents, worth what you paid for them!

***Watchmen Spoilers Ahoy***

Again, I'm only looking at the problem as it's presented in the graphic novel. I don't agree with its message as it applies to the real world. If I found myself in that world, though? Nah, I couldn't side with Rorschach. In the end all the antagonist did was buy the world some time, but I still can't think such a fanatical devotion to the truth would be worth the consequence of annihilation.

The AGW comparison is interesting. I think it's more appropriate as I accept its inevitability, but I'm thinking we have more time. I can be delusional like that.

I can think of some other fanatical devotees of the truth whom I admire, who were at least as dark in their way as Rorschach.

Can you guess?

Lemme bounce something off you guys.

I have a personal blog.

I also have a new source of hilarity--a local anti-Israel activist is, I've learned, writing a novel--a lesbian-themed murder mystery set in the West Bank.

I sort of want to blog about it, chapter by chapter.

My mother really doesn't want me to, and feels it's potentially unsafe.

Would you keep commentary for friends?

Would you blog openly?

Would you start a new blog?

What would you do?

I'd blog! If your real name isn't associated with the blog, then you're not exposing yourself any more than you do here.

A much-misunderstood (notably by Ayn Rand) comment.

Having personally translated a great deal of Nietzsche, and being heir to the complete works in German annotated by a major Nietzsche scholar, I must beg you to consider the fact that there is an order of magnitude difference between people who have actually read and comprehended him and "scholars" who merely quote-pick to prove a point.

In fact, I would even say that the discrepancy is as great as that dividing people who grok Jesus and those who use him to gain televangelist ill-gottens.

It is a metaphor for the affirmation of Life. "Would you, given the choice between never existing as yourself or enduring your existence as yourself eternally, without change, choose never to have existed or choose to exist as yourself forever, in an endless loop, without change or substitution?"

It is in fact one of the most Christian of the questions he ever posed.

re: #176 Cato the Elder

It is a metaphor for the affirmation of Life. "Would you, given the choice between never existing as yourself or enduring your existence as yourself eternally, without change, choose never to have existed or choose to exist as yourself forever, in an endless loop, without change or substitution?"

It is in fact one of the most Christian of the questions he ever posed.

I'd rather have never existed. I'm not that fond of myself, and parents lives would have been better had they only had my sister.

That's not how I took it. It seemed to say that all things begin at Point A, on a circle, and eventually returned to Point A to start all over again.

That what I am typing in response to you now, I have done an infinite number of times in the past, keystroke for keystroke, and will do so again an infinite number of times in the future.

Infinite repetitions, without a single variation, as though all reality were an unchanging train on an unchanging, circular track.

No!

It was a thought-experiment, designed to test whether you say "yes" or "no" to life!

It's not a theory, it's a question.

re: #68 SanFranciscoZionist

Lemme bounce something off you guys.

I have a personal blog.

I also have a new source of hilarity--a local anti-Israel activist is, I've learned, writing a novel--a lesbian-themed murder mystery set in the West Bank.

I sort of want to blog about it, chapter by chapter.

My mother really doesn't want me to, and feels it's potentially unsafe.

Would you keep commentary for friends?

Would you blog openly?

Would you start a new blog?

What would you do?

Would you like to set up a blog on my server? I could easily set up wordpress with a dynamic domain for you, you would just have to wait until next weekend when I have some time.

My IPs aren't even from the country you live in. They'd get a Canuck IP.

but but but... no! Life isn't unchanging! It's an affirmation of the ego, of perpetuating one's own self as it exists in one moment, or at least that's my understanding of what you wrote:

"Would you, given the choice between never existing as yourself or enduring your existence as yourself eternally, without change, choose never to have existed or choose to exist as yourself forever, in an endless loop, without change or substitution?"

Soldier up, brother! I will not accept such talk. You are a worthy human being, regardless of what kind of shit life throws your way, or what kind of garbage your folks feed you.

I value your presence here, and it sure as shit ain't because I pity you. Snatch up those boot straps, and stomp this Earth like you have a purpose. You're a better man than you give yourself credit for.

You shut up right now! That is a negative-ass thing that both the Catholic Church and Nietzsche disavow.

I will not tolerate that from an occasional antagonist, any more than I would from a friend threatening suicide!

LIFE IS BEYOND ALL MEASURE PRECIOUS, and all Nietzsche was proposing was a test to prove one's allegiance to it.

The most Nietzschean movie ever made was "It's A Wonderful Life".

If you don't believe me I'll come to you as Clarence and rescue you from drowning.

Stop it. You are talking yourself into a hole.

The world would be less if you weren't in it, and your parent's lives would be empty without you.

email me. Please.

I know, and I've got no intention of killing myself. And I do hope to balance out the scales in time. I'm often down on myself, but I'm not giving up.

I believe you brother, but you need to tell "The World" to fuck off, and see the value within yourself. That kind of talk in #178 simply won't do. It's passive and defeatist. That kind of thinking destroys your will, and just as surely shall kill you inside as jumping off a cliff would.

Fiddlesticks! I haven't like myself for years, but screw it, I'm all I've got. And it gives me the opportunity to work on liking myself a little better each day. But it's hard work and slow progress, you betcha!

Furthermore, I've found that people who don't like themselves are generally nicer than the fatheads who have a great opinion of their works and days. Lemme tell you, bud, you don't want to see the 'dark side' of some of these jokers. It sounds like there's some serious bad ju-ju between you, your parents and Sis. I'm not going to go there, but you should be working hard on figuring out the whammy they put on you. We all aspire to being loved, as is our birthright. It sounds like you didn't get yours, so you're going to have to nurture and love the child in you who became the man under such adverse conditions. In doing so, you'll become a human being in the best sense of the word: a healer, with the heart to face the most difficult hurt of all - his own.

Hang in there, buddy: it's the best fight of all, and the stuff of real heroes. Accept it like a gift: the gift of finding and loving yourself while taming that old useless dragon that's living inside you.

LudwigVanQuixote;

Where are we in relation to the Milancovitch cycle peak, and how far off is it?

If I may butt in---we're headed back in to our nearest approach to an ice age, but even if there had been no anthropogenic release of greenhouse gases, it seems that by a narrow margin we would have missed getting one this time around. In 5000 years or so, we would have skated by. Probably.

But that's not the real world. In the real world, the CO2 we've already put into the atmosphere is sufficient to ensure that we don't even have a close call.

Instead, we're in for about 50 thousand years of warmer than we'd like. If we don't haul back on the reins soon, it'll be considerably warmer than we'd like. Civilization might survive, but civilization in the past has required some sort of decent, moderate climate.

Now, on to the topic of the thread. Comics are worth heap big money. Or maybe more accurately, some people are willing to pay heap big money for comics. In the spirit of the blog, that foolishness deserves to be punished, I endorse the idea that those people should pay heap big money for old comic books. And here's another thought in that same vein: save your newspaper comic page.
