Tuesday Afternoon Music: Keith Jarrett, ‘My Song’

Music • Views: 2,446

Our Tuesday afternoon insanity break is a live recording (audio only) of a Keith Jarrett solo piano concert in Berlin, 2009, with a transcendently beautiful version of his classic composition “My Song.”

This tune is one of the most gorgeous melodies ever written, in my opinion; it originally appeared on the album by that name with his European Quartet: Jan Garbarek (sax), Palle Danielsson (bass), and Jon Christensen (drums). Keith adds an especially moving introduction to this live version.

Nah, it’s the fried calamari.

I went to the DMV yesterday. Actually, it’s the MVD here. Took a number, and my number was called. Didn’t even get a chance to sit down.

The photo was horrible, though.

I’ve been to hell. I spell it…I spell it DMV
Anyone that’s been there knows precisely what I mean
Stood there and I’ve waited and choked back the urge to scream
And if I had my druthers I’d screw a chimpanzee-call it pointless

That’s why god invented AAA. Also, they have this reservation system at the DMV these days…but you opted for the full DMV experience, sitting next to interesting people on hard plastic chairs for four hours…lucky you!

Here in the socialist great white north ( Ontario, Canada), they privatized the DMV and there is seldom a wait of more than a few minutes, but the photos are still crap.

Some functions here (Louisiana) have been privatized too.
DMV experience is actually quick and easy, on the RARE occasions you even have to go in anymore. Much of it is online.

Exactamente. I woke up and suddenly realized that I’d forgotten to get an appointment in advance to renew it, so I had to go in, get a number, and wait almost 4 hours. Yikes. Nice way to spend a birthday.

If I’d let it expire though, they make you take the written test and all that, and I didn’t want to go through that, so I read the New York Times and CNET news on my iPhone while I waited.

I went to the DMV yesterday to get my very own blue parking tag. Took 10 minutes.

DMV wait times have really gone down here since most of the stuff (registration renewal) can be done online.

Don’t tell anyone (especially the folks I rented the car from last month) but mine expired two months ago. I only had to take the eye test, though. You don’t have to do the written one unless it expired over a year ago.

Somali stations air animal noises to protest extremists’ music ban

Radio Shabelle, along with the stations Tusmo and Hornafrik, were responding to threats from Muslim militant groups that believe music is un-Islamic and want it prohibited.

Mogadishu’s 14 private radio stations stopped playing music Tuesday after Hizbul al-Islam, an Islamic extremist group, issued a 10-day ultimatum. The threat was backed by the main militant group al-Shabaab, which has been linked to al Qaeda.

A statement from the National Union of Somali Journalists said several stations received calls, warning them that there would be consequences if they failed to comply with the ban within 10 days.

But the three stations decided to broadcast the noises instead of music. Radio Shabelle announcers could be heard speaking on air, backed by the sounds of hooves, ocean waves, gunfire — even the roars and growls of big cats.

Fox News: The First ‘Death Panel’ Victim?

A woman battling a cancer battle was dealt a surprise blow by Uncle Sam this month.

Diana Smith has gone through six months of radiation and chemotherapy — one week out of every month. She is in remission and had a donor for a transplant; being in remission is prerequisite for the transplant.

But her hopes of receiving the transplant were dashed in March, when she says, the Social Security Administration contacted her –without her soliciting it — and told her that her three year-old son was entitled to receive Social Security disability payments. Even though she didn’t ask for it, she signed the form and received her son’s first check check.

In April, Medicaid canceled her universal health care policy because her income level had risen with her son’s payments – making her ineligible for the insurance program.

In fact, the hospital decided to stop her treatment, not a government panel
Hospital reportedly said it “could not provide the procedure because the risk is too high,” making them “subject to liability issues.” The CBS4 article to which The Fox Nation linked reported that the hospital chose to cease treating the patient after the she was no longer covered under Medicaid because it would be “subject to liability issues.”

Trickery!

The Social Security Admin could not possibly have had the first clue who she or her son were unless they had been contacted - which will usually, like 100% if the time, be made by the person seeking the assistance, DUH.

This woman was trying to get all the benefits she could get.
Now, I don’t necessarily blame her for wanting to do that, if she’s that desperate, and this woman must have been.

But anyone applying for/receiving benefits of any sort knows that if one benefit rises, the others will be affected - no “double dipping” above whatever the level is.

I worked with a woman once, who worked for us part-time, and took the job based on a pay rate that paid her just below the cut-off point where she would lose her disability SSI.

She eventually quit working for us because we were raising pay for her class of employee, and she didn’t want to affect her disability, because if she ended up losing the job we had her in, it would take her 3 years (or something) without income to requalify for the SSI.

The system is a bit of a mess, but the bottom line is that anyone getting any benefits is usually quite aware of exactly what those cut-off points are.

I hear the DMV argument as some sort of “evidence” of the fact that government doesn’t work. Because I guess nobody ever waits in line anywhere else? Then I explain to them how I got in and out of a DMV with my new license, photo and all, in a matter of minutes.

Well now that you mention it… yes!

Seriously I’m a liberal, do you expect anything but smug satisfaction from me when I get what I want?

That confirms my observation, thank you.

Blame it on jamesfirecat.

I suspect Buck is enough of an adult to see a bit of humor in it.
Buck’s karma will recover.

Of course, he did. Just ask him, he’ll tell ya.

God bless him, he remained convinced to the end. A man of conviction. A man of commitment. A committed man.

A man who should be committed. But I digress…

A toast to Buck!

Well, now that he’s discovered this new power, I hope he will use it for good.

To be fair, I did it by up dinging a few comments that I originally down dinged.

A cruel mercy if you will….

as long as a few of those were MINE.

I remain impartial as I did not get involved in today’s Buck brawl. Perhaps another day…

Yeah, I made it a few times.

Hee Hee Badge of honor?
Or “just for the hell of it” badge?

Is what I’d be saying if I hadn’t left out a word to it.

The correct version

re: #189 Floral Giraffe

I think that an up or down ding should be made in the heat of the moment upon reading the post. Going back to old threads seems like too much manipulation.

It’s awful, and you’re right.

The bitterly funny part, of course, is that the same pundits who insisted that no one ever died for lack of good health care in this country will now be tracking those deaths and blaming them on Obama’s healthcare bill.

True that.

You know I’ve passed 20k updings…The only ones i really remember was when I posted about Jordan calling us from Iraq from a rooftop at 3am.. ( I think that post has the all time highest dings at LGF)
And the few downdings when I told a joke about the Dead..( I thought it was funny..Have you sense of humor?)
And just a few other dings that really stung…I have a trillion updings in my account to give.. I rarely give a downding for any reason at all..Except..Well you know..then it’s on….I did catch the AnneFrance burial before closing time…It was great!

Sometimes I feel like I need to wait to figure out what a conversation is about, then I’ll go back and ding. But going back thru old threads just seems tiresome.

I Def-initely have to wait and reread to see what the heck is going on!
