I was watching the Fox morning news a couple of days ago, saw them broadcast an image of a sign decrying ‘Socilists’… no comment from the hosts.
I guess it’s considered more authentic if a few spelling errors creep in.

After reading the last entry and this one, I really feel as if these Tea Partiers are simply rational, thoughtful, intelligent, and engaging people who are merely trying to express their dissatisfaction with the current political state of affairs in a meaningful and erudite way….
I’m almost positive that all of these signs and extremists are not the norm and, should you attend an actual Tea Party rally, you’d probably be discussing and debating with others who are in the midst of reciting Shakespeare, Voltaire, Moliere, and other literary giants as easily as they delightfully regale you with the history of politics from Plato to Fukuyama.

It does, but I can’t ignore the animation, either, and it really does bother me. There are some that I like and I notice that those are usually a lot quieter, too. Princess Mononoke, for one. No screaming or flashing lights.

Actually, I get tons of great articles through twitter. That’s mostly what I use it for. I tend to follow people who link to great articles or interviews online. It’s not all about kids talking about what shoes they’re wearing today. =P I also love it for live events like when CERN went live a few weeks ago - seeing them update that live was really cool. And also BadAstronomer and Neil Tyson are great to follow, as well as JPL and other places that send out really awesome science stuff.
Dunno if you ever thought about that aspect of it, but now you have! =)

People have said that if you go back with a critical eye that the original movies don’t really stand up, but they’re wrong, for the reason you state. That opening shot let you know immediately what was going on. Everything seemed far more desperate, far more seat-of-the-pants. The directorial style was more John Ford, with people semi-flubbing lines and having realistic interruptions than the later movies.
Yes, Yoda is a more comic character than we remember, and yes, C3PO is campy as hell. They weren’t the center of the story.
Long story short is that Lucas failed to make me believe in the motivations of anyone in the new movies. The only one I felt remotely made sense was Obi Wan Kenobi. And the only fight scenes I really liked were Obi Wan against Jango and Obi Wan against Grievous.

I did like the Boba Fett backstory. That part was nifty.
I’ve liked the plot of most of the Star Wars games a lot more than the recent movies. Outcast is a good series, especially.
I did like the Boba Fett part, just wish they had done a lot more with it. I would habe liked to have seen him in the third movie confronting Mace.

Long story short is that Lucas failed to make me believe in the motivations of anyone in the new movies. The only one I felt remotely made sense was Obi Wan Kenobi. And the only fight scenes I really liked were Obi Wan against Jango and Obi Wan against Grievous.

I have not watched any Kurosawa except for Seven Samurai when I was a kid, and I don’t remember too much about any technical stuff. However, my point about the swordfights from a technical point of view is the realism and attention paid to how the movements blend into the give and take of an actual fight between trained individuals.
In the Kurosawa clip, the actions of the guys he kills aren’t realistic - there’s a bit of the ‘stand around and wait and attack one at a time’ that is common in Hong Kong martial arts flicks, and then when they start running, their attempts to fight are of the lead-with-the-chest-and-head kind. Trained fighters almost always lead with the weapon in front, and even panicked men fearing for their lives will keep the weapon before them, even if they’re swinging it wildly in an attempt to keep the enemy away.
Compare it to the Qui-Gonn/Obi-Wan/Maul fight. The first part with both Jedi against Darth Maul is not bad - it’s not easy to accurately choreograph multiple opponents against one without doing a little bit of stand-and-wait, but it’s done pretty well there. Maul is very much on the defensive, and all his sweeps are defensively minded, with a give of ground that is in time with the attacks directed at him, much as a real swordsman would. When Obi-Wan is isolated, the fight goes downhill a little, but is still better than most lightsaber duels. Qui-Gonn’s attacks are very stilted and unrealistic, and attack the four corners (shoulders/hips), which is a basic theatrical swordfight element, and totally not how realistic blows in swordfights tend to be. When they aren’t attacking the four corners, the swings are fairly obviously aimed at the other weapon, instead of at the body. I suspect that Liam Neeson was either physically limited in what he could do, or the difference in the fighting of Qui-Gonn and Obi-Wan was excessively emphasised.
When Obi-Wan and Darth Maul go at it, though, the fight is at its best. Most of the attacks are actively directed at vitals, the head/body, and parries are obviously done to prevent a blow landing, rather than both fighters just swinging at the other guy’s weapon in space as is common in movie swordfights. There is very little of the four-corner slashing, and attacks on the other guy’s weapon are clearly done to create an opening, rather than just to clash weapons. The best part, however, is that not only can you definitively tell at any given time that one guy is attacking and the other defending the attack, but the attacker changes rapidly back and forth, almost from move to move, much as it is in a real fight between highly trained individuals. Most movie fights have one guy clearly pushing the other guy back for a long time, then vice versa, but to have the very realistic element of two trained fighters pushing back and forth rapidly as each one looks for an opening is very rare.
For another very, very well choreographed fight, I always like Achilles vs Hector in the otherwise average Troy, with Brad Pitt and Eric Bana. It’s not an especially realistic fight, but the dichotomy in styles and the way it adds to the characters is superb.

Also, a double-bladed weapon is totally useless in the real world.
It’s a nice fight scene. It’s cinematic. But given that it’s a fight between two mystical people wielding supernatural powers using technologically impossible weapons and doing physically impossible things, calling it a realistic-looking swordfight is silly.
Compare with this.
That’s what a real swordfight looks like— messy and awkward as hell.

You are entirely right about the leading with the head thing, though I’d note there’s a lot of katana moves, since it’s a wrist-and-hips form, that do lead with the head at a distance.

The actions of the combatants (at least, the guys who get killed) in the Kurosawa clip are not accurate - they do some standing around and waiting, they lead with the head and body, etc. That doesn’t make it terrible - most films do something similar.

No, it’s how people doing Kendo fight, not actual fighters.
We have the historic records from Japan and from Europe. One-on-one swordfights between professional soldiers tended to be over on the first exchange of blows, except where ultraheavy armor was involved.

Take my word for it - put a sword or the equivalent in the hands of an untrained person, and they look very different. As they get more training, they look different again, but still not like they do in movies, even when under pressure.

Most swordfights do not go on for any length of time, and they do not involve a back and forth pushing and giving of space, like in the movies. That is the movie part. Real sword fights did not last any length of time except between heavily armored fighters.
Modern Kendo and Iajitsu have formalized and ritualized swordfighting, and European duels also ritualized it, but neither resemble what actual battle sword-fighting looked like.
You could make an argument that what the Jedi and Sith do is an accurate display of schools of lightsaber fighting and that it’s a highly traditional art, which is probably ‘true’, but the lightsaber fight of Luke vs. Darth cited above is far more like a ‘real’ combat than between Maul and Qui-Gon.

I’m sorry, but to me it isn’t even an argument. Historical records exist. Swordfighting was damn popular over the entire planet, and all of the actual histories of swordfights that were not ritualized duels show them lasting for a very brief time period in engagements between trained swordsmen. This isn’t a very ‘serious’ subject— it is, as you say, esoteric, and I’m not actually at all annoyed, just baffled how anyone could claim a fight involving a double-bladed weapon was realistic.
However, I’m going to hazard a guess that your experience comes from a more formalized art where what you say is true.

I was at a biker bar here in Germany and encountered some neonazi supremacist fellow wearing a black t-shirt with a quote (in English) from some American white supremacist about “preserving the purity of our white race”.
Such speedch and statements are highly illegal in Germany, I guess he though he could get away with it if it was in English (Just like they play Frank Zappa’s “Bobby Brown” on the radio stations here)
I considered going up to him with a black marker and correcting the mistake, but didn’t, as I would’ve felt compelled to top it off by adding a toothbrush moustache under his nose…
