Thank you very much Charles for helping to put the lies and smears to rest.

In each case, the deniers are going to engage in the usual:

Attacking the credentials of the reviewers.

Alleging political pressure.

Finding financial connections between the reviewers and green energy

Saying there are more reviews to come

Finding any remotely critical part of the review and citing it out of context.

Hopefully at least this thread will be free of them.

so not to point one way or the other but I am wondering how this volcano thing affects all the climate models?

4 Mad Prophet Ludwig  Sun, Apr 18, 2010 4:29:28pm

Now the sad part is that the hard core deniers are simply going to claim that the investigating agency was part of some conspiracy as well.

Part of what makes all of this so astonishing to the scientific world is that of course data and methodology is always presented thoroughly in any good paper and that of course all the data and methodology was already out there.

However, it is nearly impossible to get people to look at it.

This puts the scientist in a very bad place. Our sword and shiled has always been the data itself. It either supports our story or it does not. So when we painstakingly collect it and analyze it and present it, it is astonishing to simply have it ignored.

There is no science discussion without the data and the analysis. Of course everyone gets that the propagandists main weapon is to do everything in his power to smear the data or the scientists and a reliance on the fact that people will not do their homework.

But this all went well beyond that. This went into the realm of simply trying to destroy the careers of scientists by lying about them.

It's agonizing.

re: #3 brookly red

That's actually a really great question.

The answer is that volcanoes were one of the very fiirt things modeled and that Hansen's great triumph in showing that his modelling techniques were useful, predicted the signal of a large eruption in his models. The signal from the real world matched the modeled prediction almost perfectly.

Please note that this was 1978 and 1981!

Here are the abstracts for the papers:

[Link: pubs.giss.nasa.gov...]

Hansen, J.E., W.-C. Wang, and A.A. Lacis, 1978: Mount Agung eruption provides test of a global climatic perturbation. Science, 199, 1065-1068, doi:10.1126/science.199.4333.1065.

The Mount Agung eruption volcanic eruption in 1963 provides the best-documented global radiative perturbation to the earth's atmosphere currently available. Data on stratospheric aerosols produced by this eruption have been used as input to a model for the atmospheric thermal structure. The computed magnitude, sign, and phase lag of the temperature changes in both the stratosphere and the troposphere are in good agreement with observation, providing evidence that the climatic response to a global radiative perturbation is significant, as well as support for the use of theoretical models to predict climatic effects.

[Link: pubs.giss.nasa.gov...]

The global temperature rose 0.2°C between the middle 1960s and 1980, yielding a warming of 0.4°C in the past century. This temperature increase is consistent with the calculated effect due to measured increases of atmospheric carbon dioxide. Variations of volcanic aerosols and possibly solar luminosity appear to be primary causes of observed fluctuations about the mean trend of increasing temperature. It is shown that the anthropogenic carbon dioxide warming should emerge from the noise level of natural climate variability by the end of the century, and there is a high probability of warming in the 1980s. Potential effects on climate in the 21st century include the creation of drought-prone regions in North America and central Asia as part of a shifting of climatic zones, erosion of the West Antarctic ice sheet with a consequent worldwide rise in sea level, and opening of the fabled Northwest Passage.

Sinclair has a really good video that mentions it.

re: #3 brookly red

One could consider the effects of the Mount Pinatubo eruption:
Pinatubo Climate Investigation
January 1997

Volcanic eruptions, if large enough, can blast gas and dust into the Earth's lower stratosphere. The strong winds at these altitudes, about 15-25 km, rapidly blow the volcanic material around the world. The main gas emitted by the volcanos, sulfur dioxide, over a period of weeks combines with oxygen and water to form sulfuric acid gas. This gas then condenses into fine droplets or "aerosols" that form a haze, similar to the haze that often reduces visibility in the United States, Europe and other industrialized regions (the tropospheric haze originates mainly from the sulfur in fossil fuels).

Volcanic haze scatters some of the incoming sunlight back to space, thus reducing solar heating of the Earth's surface. This changed heating of the Earth is an example of a "climate forcing". If we can understand how the Earth's climate responds to such volcanic forcing, it may help us predict how climate will change in response to other forcings, such as increasing greenhouse gases.

re: #16 windsagio

Note this only relates to the relatively short-term effects.

So, it is honestly too soon to say how drastic the effects of this eruption will be in the short term.

however, like I wrote yesterday,

In the short term (months) particulate matter in the atmosphere from the volcano will block out sunlight and cause some cooling over some regions.
How much and where is not yet known precisely.

In the long term (this and subsequent centuries) the massive CO2 release from the volcano will add to the overall warming.

If one is interested seriously in looking at what the signal from such an event is check out:

Daniel Almond, a three-tour veteran of Iraq, is ready to "muster outside D.C." on Monday with several dozen other self-proclaimed patriots, all of them armed. They intend to make history as the first people to take their guns to a demonstration in a national park, and the Virginia rally is deliberately being held in sight of the Capitol, just a few miles from the White House.

What they fail to understand is that in spite of diminished solar activity, the planet has continued to warm. From the ADL (1998):

Revolution and Reality: A Transcript and Analysis of Mark Koernke's "Time is Running Out."

This is not the first time that Koernke has made the allegation that the Gun Control Act of 1968 came from Nazi Germany. In his 1993 video America in Peril he made the assertion that it "was taken from Nazi Germany's control laws of 1938, word for word."

The "source" for this outrageous statement is a small extremist group called the Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership (JPFO). This radical pro-gun group, which ironically consists mostly of non-Jews, shrilly makes the (unsupportable) claim that the Holocaust was caused by gun control.

The JPFO's case was printed in a 135-page booklet published in 1992 titled "Gun Control: Gateway to Tyranny." This booklet consists largely of copies of regulations regarding firearms from the Weimar Republic and Nazi Germany. Two chapters compare Germany's March 1938 weapons laws to the Gun Control Act of 1968...

There's a Blogmocracy member that actively seeks members for JPFO there.

That also means that if they do anything stupid with those guns, they need to be shot, right there, in the head preferably, and let the national news go ape showing their bullet riddled corpses so the next set of teabag idiots who thinks this is clever understands the social contract.

I am not a teabag idiot, but I do believe there is a reason why the amendment guaranteeing freedom of speech and assembly is immediately followed by the one guaranteeing the right to keep and bear arms.

It is used and abused by both sides for rhetorical point-scoring, but I oppose the kind of restrictive carry laws in effect here in Maryland. Basically, the law says you can apply for a permit, but the fine print tells you not to bother.

When and if I decide that I need to carry, either on a one-off basis or regularly, I shall consider it my inalienable constitutional right to do so.

I consider the spate of protesters going around armed as a form of 'self-expression' to be proof positive that the current anti-government movement is based on fantasy rather than fact. Not a single challenge to gun ownership, yet suddenly they feel 'under attack' and immediately grab for their guns to feel better.

Obama got panned, more or less correctly, for making a statement about angry people bitterly clinging to guns. How ironic that it turned out to be prophetic.

Almond plans to have his pistol loaded and openly carried, his rifle unloaded and slung to the rear, a bandoleer of magazines containing ammunition draped over his polo-shirted shoulder. The Atlanta-area real-estate agent organized the rally because he is upset about healthcare, climate control, bank bailouts, drug laws and what he sees as President Obama's insistence on and the Democratic Congress's capitulation to a "totalitarian socialism" that tramples individual rights.

"Due Process" is "the principle that the government must respect all of the legal rights that are owed to a person according to the law". In the case of criminals, that means a trial.

Of course one must respond in self-defense if one's own life (or the lives of loved ones) is threatened. But I seem to recall being told I belong in North Korea for tholding that opinion in a different thread on a different day.

Also, tends to depend on the level of development--when there is no indigenous middle-class merchant group, the Jews are regarded as a sort of specialist caste, and given more leeway. Once they're competing with Christian merchants, it tends to get ugly quite fast.

Just having a weapon and resisting arrest is not enough justification in most cop shops to send bullets winging. In October of this year, one month prior to the November midterm elections, a special army unit known as ‘Consequence Management Response Force’ will be ready for deployment on American soil if so ordered by the President.

The special force, which is the new name being given to the 1st Brigade Combat Team of the 3rd Infantry, has been training at Fort Stewart, Georgia and is composed of 80,000 troops.

More craziness from Pat Dollard:

Obama's Consequence Management Response Force Ready to Deploy Against Americans in October

It is most likely that he pulled the number 80,000 out of his a$$.

Is this

if a. then

b. the same thing Bush was talking about doing that made Naomi Klein so hysterical, or is it something else?

More craziness from Pat Dollard:

Obama's Consequence Management Response Force Ready to Deploy Against Americans in October

It is most likely that he pulled the number 80,000 out of his a$$.

Here's something more specific and in context with Pat Dollard's propagandist misinformation:

Today, the Third Infantry Division is preparing for new missions and upcoming deployments. Since October 1, 2007 the 1st Brigade Combat Team has trained as part of CCMRF, the U.S. Northern Command's Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and high-yield Explosive Consequence Management Response Force. If such an incident were to occur in the US, it would deploy as the Department of Defense's initial response force to support civil authorities in saving lives, preventing further injury, and providing temporary critical life support. After March 2009 the 4th Brigade Combat Team will begin to transition from a heavy bridge combat team with armor and mechanized infantry units to a lighter infantry brigade combat team. In the process it will lose the 4th Battalion, 64th Armor and gain the 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry. The 3ID is also preparing for the addition of a 5th Brigade Combat Team at Fort Stewart. In the fall 2009 3ID Headquarters, 2nd Brigade Combat Team and 3rd Brigade Combat Team will deploy to Iraq for their fourth tour in that country while other units may deploy to Afghanistan.

So to repeat. The 1st Brigade Combat Team has been training with the Consequence Management Response Force since October of 2007.

I kinda sometimes thing that having to explain every downding just perpetuates the rage, and often isn't helpful.

The real problem is people that go through whole threads and ding freely without actually taking part in the discussion in anyway.

Again, I've learned to ignore. If they have nothing to say, then - the ding means nothing, or could mean anything since no one will ever know the reason for it. Had a guy, I no longer see him around, used to go through every thread a day or two later, and down ding almost every one of my comments. LOL. Like - that was supposed to MEAN something?

There will be no real need for these troops. This movement is mostly tax paying white folks. They are just a little upset over the government not paying attention to them at all, while catering to 13% of the population. They will get over it quickly ,when they see troops show up. They have totally forgotten their Viking heritage.
They quickly scatter like frightened rabbits when someone shouts “racist” or “homophobe”. They are not as dedicated to their cause as the minority opposition.
After all you took their property rights through “Civil Rights”. They took it.
You took away their jobs through “Affirmative Action”. They took it.
You took away their hard earned money through numerous “Entitlement Programs”. They took it.
You openly flaunt in front of them, that they are “Bad”, “Selfish”, “Guilty” of wrong doing, even though they are the most giving country on earth… and they take it.
Minorities :agitate, persist, resist, coordinate, demand.

I remember the letter's being opened paranoia on the part of Naomi Wolf. She's missing more than a few marbles. Fjordman

His articles, which are often lengthy, are widely quoted in various anti-Muslim blogs and right-wing sites, such as Global Politician[7], FrontPageMag[8], Jihad Watch[9], Brussels Journal[10], Faith Freedom International[11], Little Green Footballs[12], Free Republic and Daily Pundit[13] among others, and quite often printed verbatim. However, in early 2009 he was stopped being linked to by Charles Johnson of Little Green Footballs due to his support for fascist political parties such as Vlaams Belang and the Sweden Democrats.

I think that deserves to be edited.

In case anyone is in too good a mood, here's a terrible story that should bring you right down.

Clay and his partner of 20 years, Harold, lived in California. Clay and Harold made diligent efforts to protect their legal rights, and had their legal paperwork in place—wills, powers of attorney, and medical directives, all naming each other. Harold was 88 years old and in frail medical condition, but still living at home with Clay, 77, who was in good health.

One evening, Harold fell down the front steps of their home and was taken to the hospital. Based on their medical directives alone, Clay should have been consulted in Harold’s care from the first moment. Tragically, county and health care workers instead refused to allow Clay to see Harold in the hospital. The county then ultimately went one step further by isolating the couple from each other, placing the men in separate nursing homes.

It gets worse.

re: #314 Aceofwhat?

It happens all the time, these injustices. This is an especially tragic case of it.

This is a story from a friend of mine, what happened to him after his partner died.

When I went to the hospital the day after, it was hard enough from keeping from crying. After all, that's where I saw him last - already dead.

So I get to the counter and tell the person that my spouse had died there the night before, and I needed to pick up his effects. The was an awkward pause, and I was asked to wait.

Ten minutes later someone came out and informed me that while they had a garbage bag with his things on it, it wasn't possible to release it to me because I wasn't next of kin. Even though I had signed the death certificate, and looked into organ donation, etc., for some reason taking home his shoes, and the clothes they had ripped off of him in the ER was out of the question unless I could have someone who WAS part of his family either come to the hospital (they're all on the West Coast) or overnight a notarized letter authorizing me to take possession.

"But I have a civil union certificate." I said. They apologized, but despite that, because of FEDERAL regulations concerning patient confidentiality, and since he wasn't able to sign the requisite paperwork when he was admitted to the ER, they weren't able to recognize any legal relationship outside of what the Federal Government did.

Of course eventually it was all sorted out and I was able to get the garbage bag with his stuff (through the funeral director who - for some reason - COULD get his effects and give them to me).

So - every time now when some farkING IDIOT says that gays already have the "same rights" as heterosexuals, or that "civil unions are good enough", I have to restrain myself from getting extremely violent.

No, they will just assume that liberals/Obama/Europeans, etc set them on fire.

Not true. LGF was never an "anti-Muslim" blog. The focus of what I wrote at LGF was on criticizing radical Islam, never all Muslims.

We had some commenters who were anti-Muslim, that's definitely true, but they are gone -- and this was on purpose, because I reached a point where I simply didn't want to be associated with their point of view at all.

Which was the right thing to do. What I respectfully suggest to you is that you push this blog as what it is, not so much a political blog, but a fact finding blog.

Just be clear that you don't care if people are left or right. You care that they are factual, honest and not out to hurt innocent people.

re: #320 Obdicut

It happens all the time, these injustices. This is an especially tragic case of it.

This is a story from a friend of mine, what happened to him after his partner died.

Civil union laws could be strengthened to where civil unions* count for all legal purposes, state, federal, and any other state, relating to medical care as if they were a bone-fide federally recognized marriage. Also, federal inheritance laws would have to specify that personal effects in value up to some cutoff go to the civil union partner forthwith. Most people don't check into a hospital with the Hope diamond in their pockets so that ought to cover just about everyone.

This would put off for another day the argument about whether the federal government ought to widen its definition of marriage, with all the tax and social security consequences and other consequences, to include civil unions. Sometimes half a loaf is half a loaf, and incremental improvements that can be realized here and now are better than wished-for changes that cannot be implemented because there is no consensus.

*Any contract that had all the power of a civil union, such as when a state issues a marriage license to a gay couple, would count as a civil union for purposes of this proposed law.

Absolutely. We agree here.

It needs to be emphasized because it would remove a great deal of confusion.

373 Red Pencil  Sun, Apr 18, 2010 6:21:05pm

On JPFO, why don't they just join the NRA:

I've met a few members, some Jews, some not. Some are or have been NRA members in the past, but have been turned off by the NRA's focus on "sportsmen's rights". They feel that the NRA's attempts to keep firearms legal by insisting (often improbably) that this or that weapon should be legal, not because of those little words "shall not be infringed" but because the weapon could be used for such things as game hunting, dilutes the true purpose of the 2nd amendment, which is to afford the people the ultimate power to protect the other amendments. "The 2nd amendment is NOT about duck hunting," they have said, with some logic. And they felt that the JPFO presented their views on the true value of firearms more than the NRA did.

The above is written as an explanation of some members' motivations, which I can sympathize with. It is NOT intended as a defense of the JPFO per se. Aside from "misstatements" like the one about 1938 Nazi Germany cited above they have really soured, perhaps poisoned their case with some literal black helicopter crap. (I've read a lot of their "literature", it's kind of sad they couldn't resist the drama of mixing in the crazy and/or made up nutball junk with actual history. )

Equal rites are what is necessary. That is all. Half a loaf-- if by that you mean not full, equal rights-- is to be rejected. Any law that stops any of the current violations of these rights is great, so yeah, incremental change is possible, but you're making a false dichotomy where it's either half a loaf or nothing.

But the most important part is that the rights be exactly equivalent to heterosexual couples.

Champaign mayor doubts Obama is an American

When a man with a video camera at a tea party protest asked Champaign Mayor Jerry Schweighart what he thought of President Barack Obama, the three-term Republican didn't hesitate.

"I don't think he's American, personally," the mayor said Thursday in a video that's been posted on YouTube. "You know, if you're not willing to produce an original certificate like a birth certificate, then you've got something to hide."

I agree with everything you said except the bit about GWB having it right. And that you did not mention the role of certain Middle Eastern governments in promoting and sustaining terrorism enough.

If his real goal were to put down Islamofascism his primary focus would have been Afghanistan and Pakistan militarily, and economically, to remove Western dependence on Arab oil.

To be fair to W. (which may shock some of you) every president since Nixon has been talking and talking about reducing oil dependency. Even Obama is failing at fixing that.

However, AGW out of the equation for a moment and speaking strictly politically, the only leverage that the violent part of Muslim world (and when I say that, I specifically mean those oil producing and terrorist supporting nations) really has is oil. If you take oil out of the equation, suddenly the M.E. becomes completely accountable for its actions and misdeeds. It then becomes very attractive to such governments to no longer fund or support terrorism or other non oil producing Muslim nations that do.

If you leave it in the equation, we have to dance to their tune.

The Telegraph (UK), one of the homes of the UK's anti-AGW-science movement, hosts an editorial by a British politician that throws a bone to the Inhofe-types:

We must not be dogmatic about climate change – unlike the warmists

Of course there is a rival explanation of some recent climatic events, no more unlikely than some others. It may just be that God had become irritated by the arrogance of mankind purporting to control the climate of the earth and that the great climate control conference was the last straw. So, deciding in His infinite mercy not to flood the world again (yet), He buried Copenhagen under a few feet of snow, delivered the coldest winter for decades to Europe and North America (except Vancouver) and expanded the arctic ice cap. Pleased with His work, he Has now garnished it with a monstrous volcanic eruption dumping thousands of tons of dust into the upper atmosphere and gone off for celestial tea. But of course He may yet be back with a deluge.

The author, Tebbit, writes so dryly that I think many readers mis-understand him.

I'd would respectfully reply that Bush's options in 2002=2003 were fairly limited vis-a-vis Afghanistan and Pakistan. We had cleared Afghanistan of notable concentrations of the Taliban and Al-Qaeda and we could not enter Pakistan. Further, the drones we are now using were not available back then. At the time, the area offered little opportunity for aggressive action, and Afghanistan is a poor candidate for nation-building. Shifting focus to Iraq made a good deal of sense given what was believed to be known at the time, in my opinion.

Well it's not really cleaner or anything like regular laundry detergent, it's a bag of dry berries called soap berries or soap nuts that grow on trees in Nepal and India. You basically put 3-5 of the things in a cloth bag and throw it in your laundry tub. They're about the size of a peanut. You can use the same ones for several wash loads and then you just chuck them in the compost or I suppose just chuck them anywhere outside.

I was intrigued and since the small bag was only ten bucks I decided to try them out. I decided to test them out on my work pants and gloves which after several days of playing in dirt, moving logs and replanting perennials were really dirty. I felt like I was playing in my own laundry soap commercial.

Anyways it totally worked. No sign or dirt or muck, they clean as a whistle. I was really surprised and did have an issue with getting my mind around the idea that all you had to do was chuck some dried tree berries in with your clothes and it would get them clean.

OK speaking of food and trying to put a good spin on things. Last night, the GF came over late and put some things n my fridge. I had strict orders not to go poking about in there and thus ruin the surprise.

She had made both cherry and blueberry preserves. These she heated as a topping for breakfast.

When I awoke this morning, I was greeted to blintzes from scratch. She stuffed them with a great mix of ricotta and cream cheese with just a but of flour and butter added to create the right consistency. As if that were not enough, she sautéed pistachios in sesame oil and added that to the filling.

The crepes themselves were perfectly thin and had just the right hint of crisp on the outside.

All of that was topped with either blueberry or cherry.

Yeah... I think I ought to marry her.

Incidentally, we have declared that we have MAO - or mutually assured obesity.

We both love to cook. This was her upping the ante after I had made duck a l'orange stuffed with wild rice and clementine oranges with a side of sautéed asparagus and stuffed mushrooms.

OK something for your cook book - a technique I picked up.

If you want a nearly perfect steak, do the following:

1. Get a large soup pot - around 4 quarts. Fill it with water and bring the water to 110 degrees F. Remove from heat.

2. Seal your steak in a zip lock bag and squeeze out all the air.

3. Put the bagged steak in the warm water. Let it set for approximately 15 minutes.

4. Get a skillet hot. You need one with a nice heavy base that heats evenly. Cook the steak (assuming you want rare and it is about 1" thick) for 1 minute on each side. Obviously more if you want it medium or well done. If you wish to cool it with wine or brandy or go for a steak Diane or simply use salt an pepper to taste that is up to you.

The point of the bag and the water is chemistry and heating properties of the proteins and the fat in the steak. By heating the entire steak to around body temperature, you break down fats and make the proteins in the steak easier to sear. The searing happens more quickly, seals in juices more effectively and the fats caramelize more evenly - without having the dilemma of wither well done or no carmelization.

The point of

well...i think the better analogy is, to me, hockey = full-contact soccer.

not much scoring...a lot of passing and turnovers...but at least when someone goes down it's because they took a legitimate shot.

Soap nuts

They probably do work. But I'm very suspicious of your end cost per load of laundry.

Try weighing a similar amount of nuts and regular detergent in your test loads.

Hmm. I don't think doing it by weight would work as the two don't really compare that way. On the laundry detergent box I have it says 37 loads at a full cup measure which is for a full load. The nut things are really light so it would take way more then what they say to use for a load to equal that cup.

Hold on. I'm going to find out for sure...

Something else comes to mind, if you like these "natural" chemicals.

Next time you want to polish some copper, or brass, buy some tamarind seeds and wait for them to ripen; then use the fruit mash as the polish cleaner.

Works, and you can lick your fingers afterwards.

That's what I'll have to figure out. I can't remember how much this box of soap cost. Next time in the store I'll check. On the box it says 37 full loads. I'll check out some other brands as well as the concentrated liquid brands.
Then I guess I'll just keep trying these nut things out and keep track of how many loads it actually does to see if it matches with what it says it's supposed to do.

We all probably use more detergent than necessary, but the bottom line is that the chemistry is the same whether it comes from the nut or the powder. The problem is one doesn't know how much surfactant there is in the nuts, or a cup full of a detergent so weight alone is problematic.

I suppose you just need to figure out how little of each you will be satisfied with and then calculate if the costs compare.

My father, who truly is a sage, once set me down when I was about 12. He said "Ludwig (of course he used me real name), you are very scientific, how would you classify women scientifically?

I said "Homo-sapiens?"

More generally he said.

I said, they are mammals?

"YES!" my father beamed. "How do you get a mammal to like you?"

"Ummm you feed it dad?"

"Very good!" He beamed. "learn to cook." He went on to say, and if you really want bonus points, clean up the dishes when you are done.

Great point, and it worked well for my father. Of course, given how good he looked at the time (and he still looks good for his age), he had the inside track for romance. Both of my parents were considered at the time "quite the catch". Them getting married is two '10s' getting together. Their daughter, my sister, rates about an 8 or 9 and so is somewhat picky about who she will date. I myself do not rate at all, since I have no interest in romance.

I found their comments regarding the use of statistics interesting. In reality, those are a pretty strong words even with the walking back which they did plenty of. They clearly felt the need to say something on the topic although given their charge, I do not know that it was required. I'm sure they thought long and hard on the choice of language. Must have been an fun conversation. The world was watching. Would like to have been a fly on the wall.

How much stronger could they have been without upsetting the whole apple cart? They clearly indicate the methods were not the best. Imagine if they had said they were inappropriate or worse.

My sister used to sing this song. If her husband heard her singing this when he was coming home from work... He would go somewhere else for a while.

Thank you for proving my point.

You are quite welcome.

I do think the comments are worth serious consideration. If it were my work I certainly would.

I just watched To Kill a Mockingbird (again) on dvd. Great flick. (an even better book!) Gregory Peck was brilliant.

I used to get distracted when they started talking about "bustin' up a chifforobe". My mind would wander away, wondering what the hell is a chifforobe? Until I finally looked it up:

chif•fo•robe n. Chiefly Southern U.S.
A tall piece of furniture typically having drawers on one side and space for hanging clothes on the other.

If I have a son, I think I'll name him Atticus.

The climate debate is silly in that whether someone "believes" that humankind is having an effect on the earth's climate or not, it makes sense to have the same basic goals, namely eliminating waste and conserving. Isn't that what conservatives are supposed to be about? What, are modern conservatives suddenly promoting waste just so they can keep the hitting streak of disagreeing with "Liberals" intact? It almost seems that way.

Forget about the whole climatological debate for a minute, because really, its about time to stop worrying about educating the purposefully ignorant and get on with the business of actually doing something about the problem. However feeble the efforts may seem they can add up. Policies should focus on cutting energy waste, especially when tax dollars are paying for it. A few ideas... Cut the US Mail delivery to 4 days a week and charge more for delivering junk mail. Put school districts on 4 day weeks to save 20% of busing costs. Get the road crews around the country to time the stop lights in town to keep traffic flowing better improving everyones' gas mileage (that one offers huge savings!) Figure out how to keep traffic flowing around construction zones and eliminate the mile-long backups, I could go on... All are simple ideas that just need leadership from politicians.

And at the same time we should open up more domestic oil drilling with the agreement that a portion of the profits generated would go directly to investment in a new electric grid and the alterrnative energy sources which will eventually replace petroleum altogether. We need lots of cash flow to pay for all that stuff. Why not use the oil we have?

The key is, cutting waste along with increasing the energy supply to create a glut in the energy market which will eventually crash the price. What true conservative could oppose the idea of cutting waste and saving taxpayers money and taking money out of the oil tick's pockets?

If it makes the climate change "believers" happy at the same time, so be it.

McIntyre says the terms of reference limited the Oxburgh report to almost exclusively uncontentious articles, while the articles he had criticized were ignored. Sounds to me like the Oxburgh report can't be worth a whole lot if it never even investigated the more serious statistical concerns raised by McIntyre... Just sayin

Of course Steve McIntyre says that. He's one of the most determined climate change deniers on the Internet, and one of the most deceptive and hysterical bloggers about Climategate. He's been screaming about this ridiculous non-scandal since the day it broke, and he's not going to give up just because the CRU scientists are being completely vindicated -- he's got a job to do, and it's called denial.

Seems to me if a scientific body has to be defended by a political body, something ain't right. I thought science was kewl enough to stand on it's own.

re: #601 rawsnacks

Wow. That's a new one! I'll add it to the list of moronic ways that the deniers manage to avoid the obvious conclusions of this report.

Do you think the fact that scientists need defending is perhaps because they're not very good at politics, because they're goddamn scientists? Criminals attacked scientists-- doesn't that bug you? We kind of need scientists.
