The X-Men #20, ‘I, Lucifer’ (May 1966)

Lifestyle • Views: 7,766

Tonight’s photo from the Lizard Collection: issue #20 of The X-Men, published in May 1966. The story in this one involved a super-powerful alien who called himself (or itself) Lucifer, and who turned out to be the villain responsible for crippling the leader of the X-Men, Professor Xavier.

Like most of the comics in the Collection, this one has very minimal wear, with bright inks and non-yellowed off-white pages.

Awesome as always. Once again, double credit to Charles' mom:

1. For producing a son who has become a fine man and excellent host.

2. For preserving such a grand collection of comic books for her family.

12 cents... how much are new comic books nowadays?

5 Kragar  Sun, Apr 18, 2010 8:11:50pm

Earliest comic I ever had was X-Men 14, first appearance of the Sentinels. Picked it up at a yard sale for a nickel. Was in decent condition. Packed away in my family collection still.

Speaking of comics, who saw Kick-Ass?

7 freetoken  Sun, Apr 18, 2010 8:13:46pm

Speaking of villains ("I, Lucifer"), left over topic from downstairs:

House Trio Moves to Block EPA

A bipartisan trio of House members announced yesterday that they are sponsoring a bill to block the Environmental Protection Agency from regulating greenhouse gases. Agriculture Chairman Collin Peterson (D-Minn.) and Missouri Reps. Ike Skelton (D) and Jo Ann Emerson (R) introduced the measure.

This should illustrate why President Obama is picking up financial reform as this current thrust, and not climate change legislation. His own party (representatives from agricultural and fossil fuel producing regions) have him check-mated.

Likewise, he is pretty much check-mated on immigration.

Obama's last easy (um... tractable) agenda item is financial regulation.

So, how much play will this nontroversy get?

Barack Obama insults Poland – again

One would have thought that President Obama might have used the time he would have spent in Poland paying his respects to the Polish fallen. For example he could have visited the recently erected Victims of Communism memorial in Washington, or at the very least have signed the condolence book at the Polish Embassy. But what did he choose to do instead? Play yet another round of golf.

I'm actually going to agree with him a little, in that Obama should have signed the guest book. But past that, there's nothing wrong with him having a round of golf. It's not a big issue, and certainly not an insult. Obama would have attended the funeral if he possibly could have. He missed it due to an event for which no human bears any responsibility.

Speaking of comics, who saw Kick-Ass?

Kick-Ass was excellent. It's a rare movie that did many things exceedingly well. If you hate kids in movies because they're all cutesy - don't worry about that. The kid in this one is 1. shot while she's wearing a bullet proof vest by her dad played by Nicolas Cage, and 2. bad ass.

Kick-Ass is awesome enough that they didn't have to do any of the short cuts you usually see to make a 'b' movie popular. There was little special effects. There was no nudity, not one boob for 2 hours. There was a cute girl with a lesbian friend, but nothing happened. They HAD a lesbian, but her lesbian services were not ever required. The movie's awesomeness was so abiding that she was around, on call I guess, but never used.

The music? Here is a perfect illustration how good this movie is - when else have you heard, in the space of 2 hours, 1. The Banana Splits Theme (for a killing spree), 2. The Barber of Seville (for various gangsters plotting their shenanigans,) and 3. Elvis Presley's rendition of the Battle Hymn of The Republic. AWESOME MOVIE

I just checked...looks like a run-of-the-mill monthly issue is going for $3.99. It's really sad that it's that much.

When I stopped collecting comics in 2002, the cover price was $1.95, which was just on the edge of what I was willing to pay. I don't see how the average kid can afford many of these books. Of course, they probably don't buy them - the digital versions are easily available for illegal download.

The moment I fell in love with this movie, the parking lot fight:

Gang member: What the fuck is wrong with you, man? You rather die for some piece of shit that you don't even fucking know?
Dave: Three assholes, laying it on one guy while everyone else watches? And you wanna know what's wrong with me? Yeah, I'd rather die... so bring it on!

re: #45 keloyd

Oh, just to clarify, I didn't put any spoilers in my Kick-Ass comment. The girl being shot by her dad (Nic Cage) is in a trailer, and comes near the beginning of the movie. Seriously, the rest of you, stop thinking about politics, drop what you're doing, and go see Kick Ass.

Psychedelics conference describes the long strange trip to the lab

One speaker introduced his mom. Another thanked his wife and kids. And at the closing ceremony of the Psychedelic Science conference in San Jose, the crowd of 1,000 stood up and applauded in appreciation of each other.

The "tune in, turn on" bacchanalian generation has matured into a gentler "take care, take notes" cadre of therapists, nurses, social workers and spiritual explorers. The sold-out conference, the largest gathering on psychedelic science in four decades, was a forum to exchange news about small, preliminary and still inconclusive studies to treat such problems as obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and end-of-life anxiety.

I have screen captures of two comments by him. I haven't checked for deletes or apologies... like I say, I just got home, I don't even know what thread it was.

Whatever... I guess there is nothing to it.

Just got home from work... I got an email with some screen captures of some really scary threats that Ludwig was making today about what he would do to Tea Party protesters... Is this for real or is someone trying to bait me or something?

No, they're authentic. Ludwig was in a mood.

He said later that he was sorry, and got over it.

A topic that has been of some interest around here lately:

Dating Study Says Singles With Options Go For Hotties

Typically, participants meet anywhere between 15 and 35 people in a night. And the scientists found that when there were more people to choose from, it was more likely that men and women would make judgments about whether to see that person again based on appearance. At bigger speed dating events, with 24 or more potential matches, both male and female choosers were more likely to decide based on "attributes that could be judged quickly, such as their dates' height, and whether they were underweight, normal weight or overweight," says Lenton.

We've got a winner in the daily creationist wheel-of-fortune contest:

The dawn of creation at LMC

Can a club to discuss creationist science coexist with evolutionists on a college campus?

Apparently so, at least at Lake Michigan College, where a small group of students has been meeting to talk about alternatives to the accepted scientific view of how the earth formed and life began.

The Creationist Club has the blessing, if not the shared beliefs, of the chair of the natural sciences department, and the support of at least one faculty member who is a self-described creationist.

"I think evolution is more of a hypothesis than a theory," said LMC student Jeremy Walker of Stevensville, who started the club about a month ago.

[...]

Walker then turned to Fran Miles, another biology instructor, who turned out to be a kindred spirit.

"There are two creationists in the science department," Miles said. "I am one of them."

The other prefers to remain anonymous, Miles said.

Miles follows the departmental policy that only evolution is to be taught in the classroom.

Among her colleagues, "I just don't bring it up," Miles said.

She emphasizes a scientific, rather than an emotional or religious, approach to the subject.

"It's important for students to use the scientific method, whether they believe in evolution or not," Miles said. "Even creationists need to know the basics of evolution."

That's what she learned in school, accepting the tenets of Darwin's studies and subsequent research in evolution. But the more she learned, the more she began to have doubts.

For Miles, life on Earth is too complex and the odds of its occurring randomly are too high not to have been guided by a higher power.

Even the laws of thermodynamics seem to be against natural selection, she said. "Bodies go from order to disorder - not the other way around."

Lake Michigan College gets a MAJOR FAIL for allowing a creationist to teach biology. It's just so sad. That biology instructor is lying to herself and her students. I'm not one for enforcing right-think on a college campus, so any instructor can believe what they want, I guess. But she just has a poor grasp of science (physics and biology), and yet she is a college instructor in a science department.

Indeed. if she were any English teacher, I would raise no objection. But in the case of a biology teacher, it could be argued she has rendered herself unfit due to willful blindness to the facts. Disgraceful.

The production has a slightly less grungy/sludgy sound than Communion, but in a good way. Somewhat more complex licks, busier drums, some interesting slower songs I didn't see coming. Feels like a natural progression from their older stuff, there's no real strange experimentation.

That's easy. Once upon the Magnet People were one, happily rolling around the universe. Then the gods got scared by their strength and defiance, and Thor said I'm gonna smash em all with my hammer, like I did the giants.

And Zeus said, "No, You better let me, Use my lightening, like scissors,
Like I cut the legs off the whales, And dinosaurs into lizards."
Then he grabbed up some bolts And he let out a laugh,
Said, "I'll split them right down the middle.Gonna cut them right up in half."

And ever since then the Magnet People wander, always looking for their other halves, irresistibly drawn together when they find one, running away in wild grief and horror when it's not the right one. :(

Yeah, I just noticed that, and I'm pretty sure I know who the emailer is.

This isn't the first time Walter posted in an overnight thread, talking about an email 'someone' sent him about a comment of Ludwigs.
Strangely enough, the comment the first time had been deleted too when Walter posted.
In that case it was one comment, addressed to another poster, a poster who had several comments deleted in that thread-- all addressed to LVQ.

Interesting. Of course Walter is just 'asking questions' when he raises these issues, like any person might. /

I have not sent or received such an email. Whoever it is, that person is trying to put pressure on Ludwig, and possibly, through him, Charles.

My guess is that it's the same person who did it the last time Walter mentioned such an email.

Although there's a bit of interesting crossover happening. In both this case and the one I remember, a certain blog occupied by stalkers made much of those exact same comments.

They already did about this last one. Wasn't a screen shot however. Someone copied the comment. Now that comment wasn't up for very long so that means either the person was lucky or someone that's registered at LGF is also at the stalker blog. It's a matter of a window of opportunity.

Opportunity and certain overlapping obsessions, as well as overlapping butthurt. The Village of the Banned has a major hate-on for Ludwig, more than for anyone apart from Charles, I would say.

Actually, in this case I suspect it's a matter of an extremely butthurt LGF person who compulsively screenshots LVQ comments everytime they get into a throwdown. That's my guess.

But as mentioned, the Banned really hate Ludwig and there are a few obsessives there who no doubt monitor him all the time. Thing is, I seriously doubt Walter would be in communication with such people. Right?

Cox upgraded (in the SD area anyway) their internet services lately, so I'm getting 15Mbs downloads instead of the nominal 10Mbs I had before. However, they didn't tell me they were going to raise my bill $2/mo ! Thing is, before the official "upgrade" I was doing better than 10Mbs already.

Oh well, they have a bit of a monopoly in my area.

Thing is, in Japan I had high speed internet years ago, and it cost me around $11/mo or so. Here Cox is 4x the cost. Urrmphhh...

Top Goldman Leaders Said to Have Overseen Mortgage Unit

It was late 2006, and an argument had broken out inside the Wall Street bank’s prized mortgage unit — a dispute that would reach all the way up to the executive suite.

One camp of traders was insisting that the American housing market was safe. Another thought it was poised for collapse.

Among those who saw disaster looming were an effusive young Frenchman, Fabrice P. Tourre, and his quiet colleague, Jonathan M. Egol, the mastermind behind a series of mortgage deals known as the Abacus investments.

Their elite mortgage unit is now at the center of allegations that Goldman and Mr. Tourre, 31, defrauded investors with one of those complex deals.

The Securities and Exchange Commission filed a civil fraud suit on Friday that essentially says that Goldman built the financial equivalent of a time bomb and then sold it to unwitting investors. Mr. Egol, 40, was not named in the S.E.C.’s suit...

Frank Rich: Racism, Neo-Confederate Rebellion Reaching A Fever Pitch

It's kind of like that legendary stunt on the prime-time soap "Dallas," where we learned that nothing bad had really happened because the previous season's episodes were all a dream. We now know that the wave of anger that crashed on the Capitol as the health care bill passed last month — the death threats and epithets hurled at members of Congress — was also a mirage...

How our current spike in neo-Confederate rebellion will end is unknown. It’s unnerving that Tea Party leaders and conservatives in the Oklahoma Legislature now aim to create a new volunteer militia that, as The Associated Press described it, would use as yet mysterious means to “help defend against what they believe are improper federal infringements on state sovereignty.” This is the same ideology that animated Timothy McVeigh, whose strike against the tyrannical federal government will reach its 15th anniversary on Monday in the same city where the Oklahoma Legislature meets.

What is known is that the nearly all-white G.O.P. is so traumatized by race it has now morphed into a bizarre paragon of both liberal and conservative racial political correctness. For irrefutable proof, look no further than the peculiar case of its chairman, Steele, whose reckless spending and incompetence would cost him his job at any other professional organization, let alone a political operation during an election year. Steele has job security only because he is the sole black man in a white party hierarchy. That hierarchy is as fearful of crossing him as it is of calling out the extreme Obama haters in its ranks.

At least we can take solace in the news that there’s no documentary evidence proving that Tea Party demonstrators hurled racist epithets at John Lewis. They were, it seems, only whistling “Dixie.”

Climategate Claptrap, I
By Mark Hertsgaard

Mark Twain famously said that there are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics. He could just as easily have included polls. Advocates across the political spectrum habitually cite polls to "prove" that the public holds a certain view of a given issue, even when the truth is more complicated or even contradictory. This appears to be happening with the climate issue. As the Obama administration and Congressional leaders prepare to introduce new climate legislation, mainstream media have given fresh prominence to deniers' claims of fraud and rampant error on the part of climate scientists. Meanwhile, surveys by Gallup and other leading pollsters are being spun as evidence that the deniers are gaining ground among the public, which is supposedly divided over whether to take action against rising temperatures and the droughts, storms and sea-level rise they trigger. A closer look, however, suggests that public opinion has changed very little. What has changed is the message coming from the media, key parts of which have reverted to their longstanding posture of scientific illiteracy and de facto complicity with the deniers' disinformation campaign...

Fox News Ignores Rupert's Clean Little Secret

Rupert Murdoch's Fox News Channel and the editorial page of his Wall Street Journal may scorn global warming as an anti-capitalist hoax perpetrated by greedy scientists, but when his media empire's own vast butt is concerned, he's hedging his bets. Murdoch's Dow Jones & Co., which publishes the Journal, released a memo on Monday announcing that it is building "the largest solar power installation at a single commercial site in the U.S." And guess what: Instead of strangling free enterprise or other such rightwing claptrap, Dow Jones says, "We save the earth's resources and save money too."

All the stats of tree-huggy goodness--more than 13,000 solar panels covering nearly 230,000 square feet to generate 4.1 megawatts of electricity from the sun, etc.--are detailed here.

But seeing News Corp., Murdoch's overall company, earnestly brag about its environmental foresight, you would never know that Fox News is, hands down, the world's loudest pusher of the lie that "There's no global warming" (Hannity), that it's a "global warming scam" Glenn Beck), or, as Fox's newest hire, Sarah Palin, scoffs, it's "a bunch of snake oil science." Over at the Journal, Bret Stephens wrote last week, "global warming is dead... Which means that pretty soon we're going to need another apocalyptic scare to take its place."...

Links are in the link I gave--

It’s been a rough week for Dan Riehl, Steve Gilbert and their fellow dumpster-diving, countertop-appraising Stinkertons. In pursuing the riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma that isn’t the military record of Barack Obama’s great-uncle, they’ve had their ears boxed by a WWII vet, been easily proven wrong in their speculative fantasies and come this close to breaking bread with Holocaust deniers as they parsed the differences between stops on the Nazi roadmap to the Final Solution.

It really couldn’t get more embarrassing for these people, could it? Well, it could, but we’d have to imagine a twist to this story so far-fetched as to beggar belief. Like, say, if the eager investigator on Gilbert’s ‘Sweetness and Light’ blog who sent harassing emails to WWII vet Ray Kitchell and his son Mark:

Dear Sirs,

In light of the recent controversy over the military service of Barrak Obama’s grandfather, Charles W Payne, I was hoping to contact you to get some kind of verification of his membership in the 89th.

I’ve checked the records of [Link: www.kshs.org...] and they only list him as being in the Navy.

I would like to get a second source to confirm that Obama is still lying on this subject as my grandfathers, father and uncles all served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam and I don’t particularly care for politicians lying about the service of family members to further thier political agendas.

Thank you in advance!

You are the one who is lying. Mr. Payne served in the 89th Divison, 355th Infantry Regiment, Company K.
…Turned out to be a sexual fetishist who regularly commissions artwork of himself as a cigar-chomping skunk getting its knob sucked by a menagerie of voluptuously drawn cartoon rabbits, gophers and other assorted mammalia. If he turned out to be a regular attendee of ‘furry’ gatherings so desperate and noxious in his social interactions that members of that oft-maligned subculture shunned him as a pariah.

Which is preposterous, of course. There’s just no way a person like that could be one of the leading figures in the Wingnutosphere’s ongoing Great Uncle investigation. It would be far too surreal if… Wait, what’s that you say?

Hillary is connected to a fresh scandal this morning...

Hill's aides in 'bully' crystal

WASHINGTON -- Politically connected staffers in Hillary Rodham Clinton's State Department twisted arms to steer a $5.4 million contract for crystal stemware to a tiny interior-design firm without putting it out for bid -- a move that shut out a well-known New York glassmaker, a department whistleblower told The Post.

Two senior State Department contracting officials, Randolph Bennett and Tandra Jones, successfully pushed for the contract to go to a firm run by Denise Mathis-Gardner as a no-bid minority "8(a)" contract, the source said -- an action that one shut-out competitor complained cost taxpayers an extra $1 million.

The contracted firm, Systems Design Inc., based in Washington's Georgetown neighborhood, had no experience making glassware, and its owner had only recently emerged from bankruptcy proceedings, the source said.

Extramarital sex fuels earthquakes, warns Iran cleric

A SENIOR Iranian cleric has claimed that dolled-up women incite extramarital sex, causing more earthquakes in Iran, a country that straddles several fault lines, newspapers reported today.

"Many women who dress inappropriately ... cause youths to go astray, taint their chastity and incite extramarital sex in society, which increases earthquakes," Ayatollah Kazem Sedighi told worshippers at overnight prayers in Tehran.

"Calamities are the result of people's deeds," he was quoted as saying by reformist Aftab-e Yazd newspaper.

"We have no way but conform to Islam to ward off dangers."

Libertarians lead Independent shift from Obama
[Link: www.politico.com...]

Who are these centrist, independent-minded voters who swung the elections in Virginia, New Jersey and Massachusetts to Republican candidates and are likely to be crucial in races this fall?

Political analysts are searching for a name. They have tried “tea partier,” “populist,” “conservative,” even “strange and unpredictable.”

None of these fits, however.

These voters are neither populist nor conservative. But many may be libertarian — fiscally conservative but socially liberal or tolerant.

A careful look at polling data shows these voters may be less mysterious than analysts think.

Libertarians seem to be a leading indicator of this trend in centrist, independent-minded voters, based on an analysis of many years of polling data. We estimate that libertarians compose from 14 percent to 23 percent of voters nationally. They are among the few real swing voters in U.S. politics.

As The Post first reported last month, SDI shut out upstate's Steuben Glass, which has made government glassware since the Truman administration.
. . .
Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) met with State officials to grill them about the contract last month, shortly after The Post's report, and said afterward that the department would reopen the contract for bidding.

What we have here is State Dept staff deciding for whatever reason that the contract should be a no-bid contract going to a minority-owned firm, and then a NY politician entering the fray after a complaint by the upstate Steuben firm in order to make sure Steuben is taken care of.

Gore takes cash for water campaign from chemical firm

Al Gore, the self-styled squeakiest-clean and deepest-green politician in American history, has some explaining to do this weekend. His environmental organisation has taken money to raise awareness about the need for clean water from a controversial chemicals company involved in the aftermath of one of the world's worst pollution disasters.

Dow Chemical, the US firm which now owns the leaking pesticides
factory responsible for thousands of deaths in Bhopal, India, is sponsoring Life Earth events in 150 cities today. The event aims to raise money for clean water programmes. Research by environmental organisations has found dangerous levels of highly toxic chemicals in rivers, lakes and other water supplies close to several other factories owned by Dow and its subsidiaries in countries including the United States, Brazil and South Africa.

Dow's factories at its global headquarters in Midland, Michigan, have been accused of contaminating the region, including the Tittabawassee River floodplains, with high levels of dioxin – one of the "dirty dozen" most dangerous chemicals. In 2007, the highest level of dioxin contamination ever measured by the US Environmental Protection Agency was found in the Michigan Saginaw River. Residents are advised to avoid contact with river sediments and not to eat locally caught fish.

re: #288 RogueOne

Because "libertarian" in the US doesn't really mean much. It spans the gamut from people who are simply socially liberal and fiscally conservative, but who would never vote for a SoCon because they prize, well, liberty, to people who's primary issue is national defense and will never vote for a Democrat because they feel they're weak on national security, to people whose political philosophy begins and ends with 'the government should be smaller', to isolationists who live in a world of conspiracy theories. The Libertarian Party itself, of course, has been involved in an orgy of selling out over the past decade and has little integrity left.

I'm a fiscal pragmatist who'd like to see everything the US government does tested to see if it actually works, and all bills passed to have a metric for their success, a timeframe for testing that success, so that we can end any spending programs that don't work, instead of having them stay and grow year after year, sucking up money and accomplishing little.

I also value individual human liberty extremely highly, so I want to address the problems we have with that in this country-- gay rights, the weakening of the church/state barrier, law enforcement having too much power, private prisons having an incentive for harsher laws, etc. etc.

I don't call myself a libertarian, though, because the word has been rendered nearly meaningless at this point.

Boxer: Backers should have tea partiers' enthusiasm

Sen. Barbara Boxer, California Democrat, told supporters this weekend to get as excited as the "tea party people are."

In August, Mrs. Boxer criticized those protesting health care reform legislation at town-hall meetings and described them as "well-dressed."

Finally, A Real White Supremacist Rally And Almost No One Notices

For two years, opponents of Obama's agenda have been painted by the mainstream media, left-wing blogs and Democratic leadership as racist and extremist white supremacists.

The charges are malicious and false, as documented here dozens of times.

So what happens when there is a real white supremacist, neo-nazi rally? Almost no one notices.

As reported by the LA Times, a neo-nazi rally Saturday in Los Angeles drew a whopping 40 white supremacists and several hundred counter-protesters:

A rally of about 40 white supremacists Saturday on the lawn of Los Angeles City Hall drew hundreds of counter-protesters, sparked brawls in which two people were severely beaten and ended with crowds of demonstrators hurling rocks and bottles at police and departing supremacists.

Outside of the local media and a handful of blogs, the event received scarce attention. None of the usual suspects bothered to cover or comment on it. Firedoglake and Huffington Post covered it, but we saw none of the hyperventilated commentary and lecturing that is directed at Tea Parties.

How curious. Tea Party events which are not white supremacist events are met with derision and abuse, while a real white supremacist rally is met mostly with silence.

There is a lesson here. The attacks on the Tea Parties have nothing to do with stamping out white supremacy and everything to do with shaping the political dialogue to stamp out legitimate opposition to Obama administration policies.

The recent death of 13-year old Yemeni child bride Elham Assi, who reportedly bled to death last week after being tied down and forced to have sex with her 23-year-old husband, has sparked outrage among rights activists in Yemen.

They are now stepping up their lobbying efforts to push for the implementation of a child marriage ban.

But that may prove a daunting challenge since fierce opposition against a ban on child brides still runs high among some religious leaders and conservatives.

Sheik Mohammed Hamzi, an official of the Islamist Yemeni opposition party Islaah and the imam of the Al-Rahman mosque in the Yemeni capital of Sana, is one of those who staunchly opposes a legal ban on child marriage.

Although he emphasizes that a woman should not get married before she is physically and mentally ready and that she herself needs to accept the marriage, he believes a law that prohibits child marriage constitutes a rights violation.

“I am against the child marriage law because it restrains the freedom of others. When a certain age [for marriage] is set, it violates the rights of others. For example, imagine a young man of 13 or 14 years of age who wants to have sex. … This is a violation of his rights,” Sheik Hamzi told The Times in an interview at his Sana home last week.

The explosion in Boharh Bazaar slightly damaged a parked car and two shops, an AFP reporter at the scene said, while local television stations showed footage of school text books scattered outside the gates of the building.

“It was an IED (improvised explosive device) planted near a shop. It was a timed device,” senior police official Mohammad Karim Khan told AFP. “One child was killed and 10 others were wounded. Schoolchildren were the target.”

Abdul Baseer sent the grenades and explosive vest ahead, then boarded a bus that would take him to his target, accompanied by the 14-year-old boy he had groomed as his suicide bomber.

But before they could blow up their target, a luxury hotel in Lahore where they believed Americans would be staying, the two were arrested and are now in jail -- Baseer unrepentant about having plotted to send a boy to his death, and the boy saying he never knew what was in store for him.

The story that unfolded offers a rare insight into the world of a Pakistani militant, from his education at hard-line Islamic schools, through his professed participation in an attack on a U.S. patrol in Afghanistan, up to his arrest by Pakistani police along with the boy, Mohi-ud-Din.

SNIP

"Through my studies, I became aware that this is the time for jihad and fighting the infidels, and I saw that a jihad was going on in Afghanistan," said Basser, a thin man speaking just louder than a whisper. "I looked for a way to get there."

SNIP

Baseeer gave only a rough outline of the plan: He and others were to hurl the grenades around the lobby or entrance gate of the hotel, and then Mohid-ud-Din was to run in and detonate his explosive belt.

Did he feel any guilt about what lay in store for his traveling companion? No, he said. "I was feeling good because he was going to be used against Americans."

Right-wing radio host calls tea parties ‘the Sarah Palin movement’, gets booed off stage

The tea parties are all about expressing American freedom and coming together to celebrate and protect God-given liberties. This, of course, is why anyone who disagrees must be screamed at until silenced.

As right-wing radio host Matt Walsh learned recently, if you challenge mob mentality, you get the mob itself. In this case, if you trash Sarah Palin in front of her biggest fans, you might just get called an "infiltrator" and booed off stage.

Now that is what I call funny.

This is fear and rumor mongering designed to make a big deal out of the vote and stir some coals to get this issue back in the headlines by having President Obama's supporters on TV angry at him. It ain't gonna work.

How do you figure? There's only one reason they wouldn't want the vote to come up before the mid-terms and it certainly isn't because they're afraid of losing repub/independent votes.

Hemp activist Jack Herer dies

Jack received worldwide attention in recognition in the late 1980s and early 1990s for the publication of his seminal work, The Emperor Wears No Clothes, which has now sold over 600,000 copies — making it the most widely read marijuana law reform title ever published. The book’s tagline, “How hemp can still save the world,” introduced hundreds of thousands of activists to the environmental and industrial uses of cannabis, which in turn relaunched the modern day hemp movement and global hemp industry. While researching his book, Jack unearthed a copy of the long-lost United States Department of Agriculture film, “Hemp for Victory,” which documented the federal government’s previous support for domestic hemp cultivation.

A BRITISH woman has risked jail in Dubai by telling police that she was raped after a boozy night out.

If the 24-year-old's harrowing account is not believed, she could face prison for drinking and having sex outside marriage in the strict Muslim state, The Sun said today.

The accused man, 30, has told police she agreed to sleep with him.

But the woman - identified only as Lucy - said the Arab man raped her after driving her into the desert.

The trading company executive said the man insisted on giving her a lift home after a night out drinking with friends at the Dubai Marina.

He then allegedly drove her to the remote area and attacked her, before taking her back to her flat and raping her again on her bed.

SNIP

The source said that if the court found in the man's favour, the woman could face a charge of having unlawful sex which might land her in jail for a year followed by deportation.

All that nuke money has to come from somewhere.

Labor unrest and economic anxiety may not be among the headlines coming out of Iran since the controversial presidential election of June 2009, but they could turn out to be critical factors in the fate of the Islamic Republic. Indeed, the regime is so sensitive about the country's well-being that it has been obfuscating economic statistics — or simply not reporting them.

Every week, unofficial sources of information in Iran (that is, blogs and social media) report labor problems. This week, there was a report about a privately owned industrial-parts company in Isfahan, Iran's third largest city, that has failed to pay 200 of its employees for the past seven months. About 80 angry workers forced their way into a board meeting, compelling company managers to hastily promise an initial payment within days and a settling of all debts by the end of the Iranian year in mid-March — with New Year bonuses as an added sweetener.

Israel has delivered a secret warning to Syrian President Bashar Assad that it will respond to missile attacks from Hezbollah, the militant Lebanese-based Islamist group, by launching immediate retaliation against Syria itself.

In a message, sent earlier this month, Israel made it clear that it now regards Hezbollah as a division of the Syrian army and that reprisals against Syria will be fast and devastating.

It follows the discovery by Israeli intelligence that Syria has recently supplied long-range ballistic missiles and advanced anti-aircraft systems to Hezbollah.

“We’ll return Syria to the Stone Age by crippling its power stations, ports, fuel storage and every bit of strategic infrastructure if Hezbollah dare to launch ballistic missiles against us,” said an Israeli minister, who who was speaking off-the-record, last week.

Poison pens point to anti-Israel hate

The first e-mail comes from a frequent writer, typos and all.

"U try to make 'our' president a pro muslim, when your 'Jewish' nation is the cause of most of our problems. Your PM is nothing more than a terrorist, but u defend him. I told u before, when u were in Israel, stay there." -- Bob De John

The second writer also has grammar and spelling problems and a bellyful of hate. "You and the rest of that jew political group continually licking honey off your nasty tongues, are much more loyal to the country of israel than you are to The United States of America. That is only one reason why most Americans do not like the jew people." -- Joey Dluzak

Here is another voice of darkness. "I so enjoy your rant on Islam and the President. It shows your ignorance and exemplify your dumbfounded fears . . . Cant wait for you to die from old age, maybe cancer, or something worse, like Alzheimer." -- Omar Khalil

The three letters came to me in response to different columns, but the writers share two distinct views. They support President Obama's hard-line policy toward Israel, and they are anti-Semites.

They hear Obama's policy as a license, and even a cue, to spew their hate. I am sharing their rants because letters like theirs are increasing as the president grows more forceful toward Israel.

The connection is disturbing. With American-Israeli relations at a low point, anti-Semitism could be reaching a boiling point.

Yes, some writers support Obama's stance in legitimate ways. They show that there is room for honest disagreement and that criticism of Israel, whether from the president or other Americans, does not have to be anti-Semitic.

But most of the critical reaction I get when I fault Obama's policies is anti-Semitic. Some of it is violent in tone, wishing me and my family death and suggesting the world would be a better place if Hitler had succeeded.

Damn teabaggers!

The Pentagon was ratcheting up pressure for military action against Iran last night as America’s top uniformed official said for the first time that a strike on nuclear targets would “go a long way” towards delaying Tehran’s uranium enrichment programme.

The remarks by Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, were his strongest yet in support of a strategy that both the Pentagon and the Obama Administration still regard as a last resort and possibly a recipe for a regional war.

They came as President Ahmadinejad taunted the US with a potent display of missile technology, while a leaked top-secret memo by Robert Gates, the US Defence Secretary, forced the White House to insist that it was preparing for all contingencies.

Mr Ahmadinejad used Iran’s annual army day parade to show off missiles capable of hitting US and Israeli targets throughout the Middle East and to demand a US military withdrawal from the region. As he did so, two senior White House officials issued strong responses to the disclosure that Mr Gates had written a classified assessment of weaknesses in the Administration’s plans for what to do if Iran failed to halt its nuclear weapons programme.

The war of words in Washington may reflect a power struggle between an Administration still committed to a diplomatic approach to Iran and an increasingly impatient Pentagon.

The Taliban are moving fighters into Kandahar, planting bombs and plotting attacks as NATO and Afghan forces prepare for a summer showdown with insurgents, according to a Taliban commander with close ties to senior insurgent leaders.

NATO and Afghan forces are stepping up operations to push Taliban fighters out of the city, which was the Islamist movement's headquarters during the years it ruled most of Afghanistan. The goal is to bolster the capability of the local government so that it can keep the Taliban from coming back.

The Taliban commander, who uses the pseudonym Mubeen, told The Associated Press that if military pressure on the insurgents becomes too great "we will just leave and come back after" the foreign forces leave.

US troops could start withdrawal from Afghanistan before the July 2011 deadline set by Barack Obama, the Defence Secretary, Robert Gates, has hinted.

Mr Gates made the remarks during a visit to a dust-blown training ground in Kabul province where Afghan soldiers come for weeks of training under U.S. and British instruction. British Brigadier Simon Levy told Gates that if Nato countries contribute more trainers, the project to expand the Afghan army will keep pace.

But he said any withdrawal "would have to be conditions-based."

"I am pleased some of the major carriers have responded to our efforts and have agreed not to charge for something that has always been free," added the senator, who is leading the charge to introduce legislation that would outlaw the practice.

More and more, references to ‘unsustainable immigration’ in Europe are code for rising concerns about the ever-expanding Muslim presence there. Recently, Belgium passed a law banning any Islamic veil that covers the face. The logic is that those who can see other people’s faces should not be concealing their own. France is about to pass similar legislation, and no doubt other countries will do so as well.

Although the number of Muslim women affected by these laws is tiny, this shift away from the generally tolerant attitudes of the past is an indicator of the mounting resentment the local population is feeling about the millions of Muslims in their midst. Last year, a YouTube video called “Muslim Demographics” was viewed by over eleven million people. The video contrasts low European birth rates with the rapid growth of European Muslims, and then indulges in demographic fantasy by extrapolating concocted figures to conjure up a scenario in which locals in many cities would be outnumbered by Muslims.

The United Nations said on Monday it was "deeply troubled" by Australia's treatment of asylum-seekers, as rights group Amnesty International condemned the reopening of a remote detention centre.

An influx of immigrants has prompted the government to freeze applications from Afghans and Sri Lankans and to reopen the Curtin Air Base, which was shut down 2002 following riots, to accommodate them.

The United Nations refugee agency UNHCR said these measures were likely to have a negative impact on the health and well being of asylum-seekers, particularly those who had already endured torture or trauma.

"The combination of mandatory detention, suspension of asylum claims and the geographical isolation of detention facilities such as Curtin Air Force Base in Western Australia -- all without any effective judicial oversight -- is a deeply troubling set of factors," regional representative Richard Towle said.

Australia this month announced it would suspend asylum claims from Afghanistan for six months and from Sri Lanka for three months as it reassesses the improving security situations in the war-weary countries.

This is the part where you can educate me.

How, aside from the Gold Standard - a pipe dream from a pipe with funny tobacco in it - do libertarians propose to stop "out of control spending"?

Is it a plan like the one from Copenhagen for fixing AGW? You know:

1. Plan to save the world
2. Hold a meeting
3. Table any further action pending ongoing studies
4. [repeat as needed]
.
.
.
X. World saved!

The libertarian model is pretty easy:

1. Everyone mind your own damn business
2. Stop spending money you don't have
3. Profit!

you're right about the gold standard idea being an embarrassment. Especially since it's obvious we should be basing our currency on something with actual value.....like the yuan or corn.

Cuban security agents and pro-government civilians blocked the Ladies in White from marching for a second Sunday in a row, signaling a clampdown on a group that has won growing attention and support abroad.

The nine women were surrounded following their usual Mass at a Havana church, and after a three-hour standoff some were forced into a bus and driven away, said group member Alejandrina García.

``They did not let us march. They did not let us take one step forward or backward,'' added García. ``I was picked up by the arms and legs and forced into the bus.''

The second blockage of a march in as many weeks indicated the government has decided to put a stop to the women's Sunday protests, which are covered by foreign journalists in Havana and have drawn growing international backing and recognition.

The Ladies in White, female relatives of dissidents jailed since 2003, have won several human-rights prizes for their peaceful protests demanding the release of their relatives and all other political prisoners.

Regulating commerce... but in this instance, the airlines are getting around the notion of raising fares (which drives traffic on their websites via search engines programmed to look at fares first). The added fees can tack on serious money to the cost of a ticket, but not factored into the price of the ticket when purchased.

Airlines now add baggage fees - sometimes $50+ on a single checked bag, yet the airlines are reluctant to increase the price of a given ticket because it might send people to other airlines.

I'd rather see the airlines consolidate the fees into the price rather than nickel/dime/$50 fee to make up their profit center...

Wilmer Azuaje was a young firebrand when he joined Hugo Chávez's revolution a decade ago to topple Venezuela's corrupt ruling class. He was elected to the national assembly and worked with the president's family to turn their home state of Barinas, a rural backwater of cattle ranches, into a laboratory of change.

Azuaje was inspired by Chávez's promise to sweep away a history of graft and patronage which had stunted an oil-driven economy. "I believed in the process of reform," said Azuaje.

Not anymore. The baby-faced protege, once a rising star in the ruling party, has now become the Chávez family's most outspoken foe. "They turned out to be the most corrupt ever. They betrayed us."

Azuaje has blown the whistle on what he claims is a kleptocratic dynasty in Barinas where farms, businesses, banks and government contracts have been pocketed by the president's parents and five brothers.

SNIP

Chávez's father ruled as governor for a decade until handing over to the president's brother, Adán, in an election marred by fraud allegations. Other brothers are also thriving: Aníbal is mayor of nearby Sabaneta; Adelis is a top banker at Banco Sofitasa, which enjoys government contracts; Argenis wields enormous clout as a political fixer; Narciso is reportedly planning his own election run.

SNIP

Azuaje (left), the Barinas firebrand, has had a torrid time since delivering to the national assembly a package of pictures, deeds and documents which he said proved the Chávez family amassed an illicit $20m fortune. The government-controlled assembly dismissed the claims after a brief inquiry.

The 33-year-old legislator said he then reaped a whirlwind: shots fired at his home; a brother killed; his mother and wife fired from state jobs. The latest alleged reprisal: a criminal charge that he abused and struck a policewoman.

The national assembly recently lifted Azuaje's immunity as a lawmaker, an unusual step, after which he was handcuffed and briefly detained. The supreme court also barred him from publicly discussing the charges. It is unclear if he will be able to run in September's election. "This is about revenge, clear as day. Chávez has not forgiven me for accusing his family," he said.

Just as he wants to protect Steuben glass:

re: re: #297 reine.de.tout

Also in that story:

Politics as usual.

Yeah, the baggage was never "free", the cost of it was just rolled up into the price of a ticket, which as you say, the airlines don't want to increase right now.

And I agree - I would much prefer to see the airlines give the customer a true cost of the ticket, to include baggage fees, rather than this nickel-and-dime stuff.

Sorry to hear that. Hope you are ok now.

I've been getting hints from MommyG to build a raised garden bed - but the kits in the catalogues are horrible expensive. I fixed that problem at the local hardware big box store and purchased 8 corner brakets and several lengths of 2x8 pressure treated wood. After constructing a clever design to fit in the triangle shaped garden fence (it looks like a Stealth fighter from the top) we filled it with mulch from a 3 year old pile of leaves and brush I'd been dumping in the woods. After a good tilling I was a hero and the garden looks great. As a bonus some PVC pipe and nylon thread made a great bean fence. The whole project was under $100 and provided 7x the square footage of one of the store bought kits. For me that is a good weekend.

Many in the GOP, including the Senate’s point man for recruiting candidates, Senator John Cornyn of Texas, hoped George Pataki would run for Kirsten Gillibrand’s Senate seat. Much to the chagrin of many in the GOP who think that Gillibrand’s seat is there for the taking, Pataki declined the opportunity to run.

Back on November 4, 2009, George Stephanopolous said on This Week that “Pataki has told at least one major GOP donor in private that he is not interested in becoming a senator at the age of 64 and would rather run for president in 2012.” Interesting. And then earlier this week, Senator John Cornyn gave his take to a reporter for The Hill:

I’ve been talking to him for a year and a half, and I’ve been reading the polls. I think there’s real opportunity there. But he’s decided he’s not running for it. My thought is, of course, he’s rumored to be a potential candidate for president, and I think he’s got his sights set on other offices, maybe including running for president. That’d be my guess.

There are more and more reasons to think that Cornyn and Stephanopolous are right about Pataki. GOP 12 notes that Pataki’s behavior over the last year closely mirrors how a man might act if he were preparing to mount a run for the presidency. Pataki has spent time in both Iowa and New Hampshire. He won’t give a straight answer to the “Are you going to run for President?” question. Perhaps most telling: he is also working out like crazy (the obese need not apply for the presidency these days). And now this: the Des Moines Register reports that Pataki is headed to Iowa to make his case against healthcare reform….

Missouri parks officials cannot bar the Ku Klux Klan from holding a picnic at a Civil War historical site this weekend, a federal judge ruled. A Klan officer sued the state on Wednesday after the Department of Natural Resource refused to rent it a pavilion at the Fort Davidson State Historic Site.

U.S. District Judge Rodney Sippel said the state cannot refuse to rent the pavilion to the Klan. The Klan official, Frank Ancona, said the state objected to "historical inaccuracies" that the Klan might spread in the park.

Ancona told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that he's not sure if the event, scheduled for Saturday, will be held due to financial considerations. Judge Sippel required the Klan to post a $1,800 bond and obtain $300,000 in liability insurance.

JOHN HINDERAKER: “It is deeply ironic that Democrats are trying to sell the idea that Republicans are somehow violent and unAmerican, when in fact, every actual violent incident is perpetrated by liberals, usually union thugs, against Republicans. It happened again in New Orleans following a fundraiser for the Louisiana Republican Party. Governor Bobby Jindal’s chief fundraiser, Allee Bautsch, left the event with her boyfriend, Joe Brown. They were attacked by a gang that reportedly prefaced their assault with racial and political insults. The attack was extraordinarily vicious.”

re: #512 darthstar

Hm...too many fuckin' blue-dogs in the party, I suppose. But I'm not calling for purifying the Democratic party of its conservatives...we see how that's been working with the GOP and its moderates.

The sad fact is that the two parties we have are so damn close (center-right?) that you can't tell them apart except on a few issues.

Just vote on it. Get DADT replaced with a simple, "gays and everyone else who wants to join the military are welcome." and let the media have their two week circle-jerk of panic about it, and by the middle of May, it will be accepted as part of US history and a complete non-issue by November.

You're so close and I keep leading you but you're not taking the bait.

It wasn't blue dogs that tossed Ohio to Bush in 2006 and it wasn't blue dogs that came out in record numbers in 2008 in CA. A large chunk of the democrat base does not like gays or gay marriage. Since we take great pleasure in slapping around so-cons all the time I think it's only fair to point out the problems the dem party has with homosexuals.

OTOH, it could be a trap. If the dems let it slide until after the election and it fails, they can blame republicans. That way they don't piss off the bigger portion of their base while allowing repubs to take the brunt of the criticism.

545 MandyManners  Mon, Apr 19, 2010 8:27:53am

A political rebellion is brewing inside an old funeral home near the state Capitol here. Frustrated liberals and labor organizers are taking aim at the Democratic Party, rushing to gather enough signatures to start a third party that they believe could help oust three Democratic congressmen.

Less than two years ago, this same funeral home was a command post for the grass-roots army that propelled Barack Obama to victory in this conservative swing state. Here is where supporters distributed signs and stickers, sorted lists of registered voters and rallied with a Johnny Cash cover band.

Now, some of Obama's supporters are mounting a defiant strike against the president's party. The nascent third party, North Carolina First, could endanger the Democratic congressional majority by siphoning votes from incumbent Democrats in November's midterm election, potentially enabling Republican challengers to pick up the seats.

Organizers say they are so fed up with Democrats who did not support health-care reform that they simply do not care.

"Our whole agenda is to turn that apple cart around and say, 'No more are we going to blindly support you because you're a Democrat,' " said Dana S. Cope, executive director of the 55,000-member State Employees Association of North Carolina (SEANC), which is leading the effort. "We're going to support you because you're right on the issues and if you're not right on the issues, we're going to remove you from office."

SNIP

SEANC and its parent group, the Service Employees International Union, possibly the nation's most politically powerful labor union, are funding the effort, which was announced April 8. In the days since, they have hired more than 100 canvassers who are rounding up the signatures needed to qualify as a third party on the general election ballot.

This is a top priority for outgoing SEIU President Andy Stern, who considers it a way to hold Democratic lawmakers accountable for their health-care votes. "It's not a fly-by-night kind of thing," said SEIU spokeswoman Lori Lodes. "We're making a very strong commitment to doing this. There is significant money behind it . . . There's not a ceiling to what we're willing to do."

The unions are giving voice to progressive activists across this state who say they feel betrayed by Reps. Larry Kissell, Heath Shuler and Mike McIntyre, Democrats who sided with Republicans against the health-care bill.

SNIP

Still, Democratic leaders are keeping watch. The effort threatens to pull money and support from Democratic incumbents who badly need both in a year without Obama atop the ballot and when the political environment is toxic.

"It's an unfortunate turn of events that they've decided this is how they want to use their energy and resources," said Andrew Whalen, executive director of the North Carolina Democratic Party, who was a dues-paying SEIU member when he was a maintenance worker in college.

The event took place at the Bi-Lo Center in Greenville, and featured former Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO) as its keynote speaker. Tancredo, who ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008, said that Americans are "going to have to pray that we can hold on to this country."

He added, referring to President Obama: "If his wife says Kenya is his homeland, why don't we just send him back?"

Pastor Stan Craig, of the Choice Hills Baptist Church, was particularly angry about the state of Washington, saying he "was trained to defend the liberties of this nation." He declared that he was prepared to "suit up, get my gun, go to Washington, and do what they trained me to do."

A Jewish community organization is campaigning to overturn the decision by Britain’s advertising watchdog to invalidate the use of a picture of the Kotel, with the Dome of the Rock in the background, for an Israeli tourism advertisement.

The UK’s Zionist Federation (ZF) is calling for a review of last week’s decision by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) saying that there is not “the slightest risk” that the people would be misled by the inclusion of photos.

In its ruling, the ASA said last week: “We understood, however, that the status of the occupied territory of the West Bank was the subject of much international dispute, and because we considered that the ad implied that the part of east Jerusalem featured in the image was part of the State of Israel, we concluded that the ad was likely to mislead.”

Your blanket use of "debunked" makes it sound like there wasn't an attack on a GOP staffer and her boyfriend who were leaving a GOP fundraising event. Whether it was politically motivated or not cannot be determined unless there are arrests in the case.

As in all cases like this there are differeing eyewitness accounts. Some of the guests earlier in the evening were confronted with some ugly slurs from the protesters.

No, now you've got me wondering.

Is the stemware for all the various State Department locations around the world? Also, I assume they need different styles of glasses for different drinks. Also, breakage.

"WASHINGTON - Hillary Clinton's State Department admitted it goofed big-time and has told lawmakers it is going to re-bid a $5.4 million contract for crystal stemware at U.S. embassies that shafted New York's Steuben Glass and sent the work to Sweden.

Patrick F. Kennedy, a top State official, made the stunning announcement at a private meeting today with Democratic Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York and Sherrod Brown of Ohio about the contract.

"He said, 'We done wrong' -- for which I give them a lot of credit," Schumer told the Post."

re-bid.

I didn't claim there were- in fact I linked a blog that was doing a good job of sorting out the rumors from the facts.

Who knows what influence that had on the attack if any?

I thought only angry words from Republicans can cause violence.

re: #547 DaddyG

The fact that there was a vicious attack on ta GOP staffer after an event that was protested by anarchists is not debunked.

The idea that the attack was necessarily politically motivated is debated.

I suspect some neer-do-wells attracted by the protest could have been involved but there is no evidence of that short of some arrests.

I suspect it was business-as-usual-for-thugs-day in New Orleans that day.

Apart from this conference, there have been several shootings in New Orleans on CANAL street (not exactly out-of-the-way), innocent bystanders shot, etc.

This attack right now appears to be just one more attack in a field of many attacks.

Probably so.
If we expect our State Dept to be involved in diplomacy around the world, we have to give them the supplies they need to do it.

And this very well will include provisions for official dinners.

You make all these comments but ignore the statement right from the quote:

It is deeply ironic that Democrats are trying to sell the idea that Republicans are somehow violent and unAmerican, when in fact, every actual violent incident is perpetrated by liberals, usually union thugs, against Republicans.

This DEBUNKED garbage is put forth as proof of the ridiculous statement quoted above. You can claim that this incident was politically motivated and I can do the same thing with every single mugging in NYC... insinuate that there is "no way to know" until some arrests are made. It's bullshit.

Yes... but the stemware proliferation around the world is out of control. It's getting dangerous. It was reported last week that a Hamas leader, attending a meeting of the State Department at the Tel Avi embassy threatened to lunch a stemware attack on Israel. The plot was discovered after he attempted to leave the embassy with 3 Stueben leaded crystal glasses under his coat.

Give global warming a few years more and you won't need to worry about foggy bottom. The Washington Monument can be used as a mooring.

Not like we're looking as if we'll do what it takes to stop it, especially considering that what it takes would probably involve reducing the global population by at least two thirds.

I disagree with the quote- that is over the top. I also don't agree with the right wing blogs that are spinning this thread into whole cloth. (Surprise!)

There is no way to tell in this case if the attackes were definitavely political or non-political unless there is more evidence. I wasn't defending the blog I was objecting to the blanket statement that this was "debunked" without further clarification on the aprt of Killgore.

So please but the "bullshit" away and don't add meaning to my words that isn't there.

Sorta like when there was the gas shortages and many states instituted the Oregon Plan. If your car tag began in an even number, you could buy gass Monday, Wednesday and Friday, odd tags were Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday

That would have the immediate advantage of halving the population in the first day of the program. By the end of the second day you would be down to 25% of the population. (Those who can breathe with gills will slow the rate of declone a bit - but then they will probably think Water World was a documentary.)

623 RogueOne  Mon, Apr 19, 2010 9:15:46am

Amanda Knox is innocent! well, maybe. I have my doubts about her conviction.

[Link: www.injusticeinperugia.org...]

Young or inexperienced investigators have a tendency to believe their own hunches. This is dangerous, because uneducated hunches are usually wrong. Hunches are not bad, they just need to be allowed to die a natural death when evidence proves them wrong. The sign of an investigation run amok is when an initial hunch is nurtured and kept on life support long after evidence should have killed it. This case is just such a situation. In the Knox case, the investigator openly states:

“We knew she was guilty of murder without physical evidence.” --Fabio Giobbi, Investigator.

Then, when physical evidence came in that did not support their story, they simply changed their story. And their suspects. And their murder weapons. And the motives. (If there was ever a ‘smoking gun’ in this case; that statement was it.)

I will only say of the interrogation, that if any FBI Agents I supervised had conducted that interrogation in the U.S., I would have had them indicted. .......Hypothetically, any trained investigator operating for many hours without rules, in a foreign language, slapping and threatening a naïve, frightened girl just out of her teens and in a foreign country, (denying her food, sleep and the right to an attorney and Consular advice) can get her to say just about anything.

Funny, I was just thinking about the subject of rationing as it might pertain to anti-AGW efforts.

Jimmy Carter, of whom you know I am no fan, was right when he said during the shortages following the OPEC boycott that dealing with our addiction to foreign oil was the moral equivalent of war.

The problem with making decisions based on such an equivalence is that in the absence of bombs falling, people refuse to feel that they're in such a position. Life goes on, there is no problem other than gasoline shortages or high gas prices, and as soon as the immediate crisis has passed, they forget all about the looming day of reckoning and go back to the status quo.

In WWII people more or less cheerfully (I'll get to the "less" part it a minute) accepted rationing as painful but necessary. However, the minute the war was over, any attempt to prolong rationing one hour more than needed would have resulted in riots.

If peak oil and AGW are what Ludwig says they are - and I'm accepting for the sake of argument that he's right - then rationing on a worldwide scale would be an entirely appropriate response to the peril.

The trouble is, how do you get people to accept it? Even during wartime, one immediate effect of rationing is the instant creation of a lucrative black market for people who have the money and don't want to accept restrictions. This is the "less" part of "more or less cheerfully". How would you convince the bulk of the population to go along with such a program in what we laughably call "peacetime"?

I just finished reading Ken Follett's "The Eye of the Needle", which contains lots of old information about what rationing entailed for average Brits during WWII. No unnecessary travel, for one thing. What was necessary was decided by the government. No civilian petrol except for approved uses. No lights after dark, or at least blackout curtains to hide them. No imported foods, no luxury items, no more than X ounces of butter or margarine every two weeks, etc., etc., etc.

An argument could be made that our current situation already or soon will call for similar restrictions. But how on earth would you sell it to fat, happy people who can't see more than ten days into the future and for whom 2050 or 2100 is something most of them will not live to see anyway?

I think this subject would repay study. A look at what wartime rationing meant in detail will be where I shall start.

This may need to become a full-length essay.

The solution to the conservation of the inherited resources and to the accomodation of those who produce nothing is one and the same: A planetary union must redistribute a resources consumption tax as an unconditional basic income. Such an union can only result from a succesful transformation of capitalism not from its crash.
