Tancredo: Send Obama Back to Africa

Wingnuts • Views: 4,057

At a tea party in South Carolina over the weekend, former GOP presidential candidate Tom Tancredo said about President Obama: “If his wife says Kenya is his homeland, why don’t we just send him back?

Absolutely unbelievable. This kind of unabashedly racist rhetoric has become completely open on the right wing: “Send ‘em back to Africa!”

Also at this rally: Dan Gonzalez of the whacked out Constitution Party, who declared that the Obama administration is “the end of America right here,” predicted fighting in the streets, and said that the GOP is owned by the Rockefellers. (Hmm, that sounds familiar.)

And what would a reactionary right wing rally be without some gratuitous gay-bashing?

I’m a tolerant person. I don’t care about your private life, Lindsey, but as our U.S. Senator I need to figure out why you’re trying to sell out your own countrymen, and I need to make sure you being gay isn’t it.

It’s almost the whole soupcon of right wing crazy, and most of the reasons I’m leaving the Republican party after the primaries in Kansas are over. (I gave my word last yr in comments when we first started talking about this that I would stick at least through the primaries… since then things have deteriorated rapidly)

First they want to send him home…

Then they b—ch that he is spending vacation time in Hawaii.

Talk about inconsistency. /

Yeah, because the way to win elections isn’t to come up with a viable alternative to the President’s message, but to attack his race and background with attacks that would fit in perfectly at a KKK meeting.

Fucking losers

I don’t care about your private life, so long as you aren’t gaying it up when i’m not looking. You can have your wife put on a strap on and do you up the ass and I’m perfectly fine with it, but the person you are having intercourse in the style of your choosing with had best have been born with two “X” chromosomes

Speaking of Tea Partiers, one of the forces behind the new (wannabe) TV network “RightNetwork”, David Jaget, has been trawling the Tea Parties:

In Michigan on the 12th:

The guy knows how to work a crowd, and he is definitely out to make a buck off the Tea Partiers.

Since he’s looking for programming ideas, shall we nominate Tom Tancredo to host immigration show?

I noted on an earlier thread that I suspect the invisible hand of capitalism will slap down a 24x7 right wing niche station faster than it did Air America on the left.

Limbaugh and Beck should thank their lucky stars that there are other shows that bracket and sometimes oppose their viewpoints. Limbaugh also has the smarts to bring in non-radio media bytes into his show to keep the controversy going.

All monolithic all the time does not make for good ratings.

Fox has been pretty unashamedly kooky for awhile now, happily promoting creationism, rabid attacks on science, the Tea Parties, etc.

I think that the statement that the GOP is now the political wing of Fox News, rather than Fox News being the media arm of the GOP, is right on the money.

I have also observed over the years this fawning over science and medicine. It has always puzzled me, as I am trained as a holistic doctor (Chiropractor) and am both a serious Jew (Prager line) and politically Conservative. As a Jew… I marveled over the absolute faith fellow observant Jews would show to medical doctors often juxtaposed against healing arts that respect the G-d given innate wisdom of the body. Another example of the suspension of rational thought is when an observant women has no problem going to a male OBGYN, but needs a female chiropractor (if they get themselves to even acknowledge Chiropractic) to be adjusted. All this, even though I’m pretty sure the great Jewish sage the Rambam would probably be a holistic doctor if practicing today.

With regards to political Conservatism… the conservative part of their nature is lost when approaching medicine and science.

Gee, who would have guessed that one… a Tea Partier complaining about everyone else “fawning” over science and medicine?

Dude, I was trying to rephrase what Tancredo said in a funny manner, I even had to check first because I thought that “Lindsey” sounded a lot like a girl’s name but I wanted to be sure. The idea here is that its foolish and stupid to say that you don’t care about someone’s private life, just so long as they aren’t gay in it.

I really don’t see why the comment is racist. Barack Obama was born in America, had some foreign living experience and ran as an American. Michelle Obama certainly gave the opening by referring to Kenya as his “homeland.”

None of this pretty but its the way politics is done. I rather think it would be racist to avoid taking her up on it, just because the foreign “homeland” is in Africa and Obama is bi-racial.

I’m glad that, of the many supporters he had here at LGF back then, most of them flounced, got banned, or changed their minds. If any remain here, I sure hope they’ll change their minds. And take a good look at any organization he’s involved with. This stuff is toxic to rational politics.

I planted some catnip under the edge of our screen porch for our kittehs to enjoy and its coming along nicely. I crushed some leaves on my fingers the other night and gave them some help getting mellow.

My 13 year old asked what it did for them and I mentioned it was a mild drug (sort of like pot for people). His reply was- great dad, we don’t do drugs since we’re Mormons but you grow kitty marajuana? Nice.

You can’t get anything past the teens.

Tell your son that he shouldn’t do drugs not because he’s Mormon, but because they’ll fuck up his life if he’s not careful.

I can’t begin to tell you how shocked I was to find such a large contingent of California rednecks when I moved up to Sacramento. Being from the East Coast my image of California was basically a really long but really narrow state, only about 25 miles wide. You know, one giant beach.

It’s a fucking dog-whistle. Saying ‘send him back to Africa’ is an applause line for racists and people who don’t consider themselves racists publicly but dislike having a black president enough that they think this is an appropriate joke.

Not claiming the president is an African-born person isn’t giving him ‘special dispensation’…and it certainly isn’t giving him “power outside the norms of democracy.”

Because of campaign law requirements, Tancredo was forced to resign from Team America PAC. The PAC was noted for targeting incumbent Congressman Chris Cannon in the 2006 Republican primary.[60] In 2009, reporters discovered that Marcus Epstein, the Executive Director of Team America, had assaulted an African American woman in 2007, and had used a racial epithet.[61][62][63] Tancredo kept Epstein on staff despite the guilty plea.[61][62]

On September 11, 2006, in Columbia, South Carolina, Tancredo spoke to a gathering of the “Americans Have Had Enough Coalition”, which he had helped found. The League of the South also invited its own members to attend the event. According to reports, the room in which Tancredo spoke had a prominent picture of Robert E. Lee and was draped with Confederate battle flags. At the closing of the event, men dressed in Confederate military uniforms reportedly began to sing “Dixie”.[71] Several days later, Tancredo came under heavy criticism from a group of Denver ministers for attending the function. In his defense, Tancredo said, “I gave it [the same speech] in probably five or six different venues, this was just one, all of them were open to the public. Succinctly put.

I maintain my position though. I have no idea whether he meant it in a racist sense or not but we need to be able to criticize our politicians on equal terms. Giving someone special dispensation because something might be taken the wrong way, gives them power outside the norms of democracy.

Nonsense. It has already been pointed out that other politicians are not criticized on the basis of their ancestry. It is racist as hell to single out one of many, and that is what is happening. How many times have you heard white politicians being told to go back to the country of their ancestry? Kennedy wasn’t very many generations away from Ireland, yet I don’t recall him being slammed in that way. Do any of the others here know of a president who had one parent foreign born?

OTOH, i don’t know anyone who, when asked about how they became successful, said “it was definitely the pot”.

and remember, i’m for legalization.

I would respectfully suggest that this is the wrong test. We should let people do what they want to do unless there is a compelling societal reason to forbid the behavior. Because there IS a compelling societal interest in favoring personal liberty.

So the test isn’t “does it make you better?”, it is “Does it so damage you that the violation of your liberty interest is outweighed by the damage we’ll prevent in outlawing the behavior”.

For pot, I think the liberty interest prevails, like it does for alcohol: forbid it for the underaged, for drivers, etc…, but otherwise it ought to be legal.

(And note: I recognize that you end up in the same place, so we are not arguing here. I just think it is worthwhile to explore the principles involved.)

In these proposals, we see the deeper meaning of a sculpture which towers over the entrance of the House of Representatives: A woman’s arm is outstretched, protecting a child who sits blissfully atop a pile of books. This artwork which is at the center of our national experience, as we pass through into the House of Representatives everyday. This artwork of a woman, arm protecting child, this artwork is entitled, “Peace, Protecting Genius” Peace protecting genius. Not through nuclear arms, but with the arms of eternal love the child genius is protected, and the child genius achieves peace through love and through education.

I am running for President of the United States to enable the goddess of peace to encircle within her reach all the children of this country and all the children of the world. And to protect our children from poverty and war, to hold them in the light of grace, and to hold them in the power of peace. I am running to challenge that system! We will challenge that system! We will change the system!

I am running for President of the United States to challenge this system which traps so many of Americans, children and adults, in fear, in violence and poverty and makes us pay for wars we don’t want and causes us to sacrifice our childrens’ future.

Consiousness altering substances should be carefully regulated so their use does not pose a public threat. Strangely enough I am all for legalization of pot given the huge cost of the war on drugs. We should also ramp up deterrents for driving under the influence or domestic abuse due to alcohol and drugs at the same time.

I’m not a fan of drugs and I’ve seen too many families torn apart by addition - but prohibition should be a personal choice because a personal choice is much more likely to be heeded than a government dictate. In fact after legalization I suspect there would be a short surge in usage then a drop to almost average pre-legalization levels of use. At the same time I predict crime along border states would drop significantly.

Prohibition tells us that story. Usage only dropped slightly but gang crime went off the charts.

Banning chemtrails should be another clue…

contrailscience.com

One of the more pervasive myths regarding “chemtrails” is that current presidential candidate Dennis Kuchinich tried to have them banned by an act of congress, but was pressured by the government to modify the act to remove the mention of “chemtrails”.

So what really happened? In a nutshell, Kucinich did not write the bill (or read it, until too late), the focus of the bill is nothing to do with chemtrails, it was written by UFO enthusiasts trying to:

1. Nullify a vast conspiracy by the “military-industrial complex”
2. Allow the use of suppressed alien technology for free energy
3. Avoid accidentally shooting down (or scaring away) visiting aliens.

They listed a bunch of weird weapons, including mind control, tectonic weapons and (very briefly) chemtrails. The bill was re-written several time in less unusual language to give it chance of passing, but ultimately fizzled in committee.

I really don’t see why the comment is racist. Barack Obama was born in America, had some foreign living experience and ran as an American. Michelle Obama certainly gave the opening by referring to Kenya as his “homeland.”

I agree that pulling out the race card upon any criticism of Obama is a bad practice. Tancredo’s staement however is very clearly racism. Simply pairing it with a racist statement by a black actor is Tu Quoque…

A short primer on Tu Quoque (You Too)- If a point is made that both sides do it – and indeed there is evidence that they both indeed do it. That is acceptable non fallacy use of Tu Quoque. This can be useful in pointing out hypocrisy on the part of someone condemning “the other guy”. (e.g. before you scold me for eating the rest of the ice cream you need to remember that you also ate half of the carton last night.)

If however Tu Quoque is used to justify unacceptable or immoral behavior it is considered a logical fallacy. (e.g. Johnny got to eat dessert before dinner so I can too.) Related to the fallacy of Tu Quoque is Equivocation (e.g. Johnny ate a jelly bean so he’s just as bad as me for eating the whole Easter basket).

There are memorials for the Confederate war dead… in Wisconsin!

Weird I know, but that’s because there were Confederate Prisoners in Madison that died there.

The biggest monuments and cemetaries in the South are for Union soldiers. Their families and states were the one’s with the cash during reconstruction. It really sticks out when you visit Chicamauga battlefield in North Georgia.

Exactly. Drug law/prohibition causes so much more harm than legal drug use it’s not even comparable.

It grows more perverse than that: drug lords “allow” some of their shipments to get nabbed - it makes their own inside people on the law enforcement side look good and has the side benefit of helping get rid of some of the annoying low-level chumps they want out of the way.

Succinctly put.

I maintain my position though. I have no idea whether he meant it in a racist sense or not but we need to be able to criticize our politicians on equal terms. Giving someone special dispensation because something might be taken the wrong way, gives them power outside the norms of democracy.

Who’s getting special dispensation? I feel that UNIFORMLY, politicians should not talk about sending their opponents ‘back’ to their land of ancestral origin.

Kucinich: US drone attacks in Pakistan could ‘inspire radicalism’

WASHINGTON – Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) forcefully criticized the United States’ drone strikes in Pakistan as inspiring the anti-American sentiments they seek to quell, touching upon a consequence of the policy rarely discussed in the media but well-recognized in the region.

“I do not support the drone attacks,” Kucinich told Raw Story, arguing that they are pushing the United States “into an area of unaccountability that would lead to blowback, where we actually lose friends, where we help inspire anti-American sentiments and fanaticism and radicalism.”

There is no fucking way people smoking weed is worse than locking up harmless people. The drug war is a disaster of epic proportions. re: #179 DaddyG

That is what happened in Portugal when they “legalized” all drugs (up to and including heroin), they didn’t entirely legalize them, they just made possession a misdemeanor akin to getting a traffic ticket.

When you get busted you have to pay a fine and go to court, repeat offenders are sent to drug treatment counseling or rehab programs. Drug use has dropped, even marijuana use has dropped, and Portugal has saved money buy funding treatment programs instead of prisons. Yet the European Union is putting pressure on them to bring their laws back into line with all the other “drug war” countries in the union, they say that Portugal is undermining their efforts. Sigh…

God forbid that we actually started treating drug addiction like an illness rather than a criminal offense…why that might actually work and put thousands of prison guards out of work! (besides giving jobs to those nasty socialist elite liberals in the treatment programs…horrors)

Of course war breeds more radicals. I wouldn’t waste time trying to refute Kucinich’s starting premise, because frankly, he is dead on the money. The pertinent question is whether his recommended course of action neccessarily follows from the starting premise, which of course it doesn’t.

re: #184 greenmamba

Yes I realized I could be accused of that so I’ll explain:

1) Tancredo’s comment on its own would certainly have been out of place, ridiculous and probably racist. It was made though, in light of what Michelle Obama said about the Kenyan homeland - a very strange thing for a first lady to say.

2) in promoting the credo, “Stop Talking About Race” I am referring to the current vogue of defining any criticism or put-down of Obama as racism. I truly believe this is counter-productive in every way.

I’ll leave it at that. It’s very strange for me to be a troll on this blog and that was not my intention.

The only time I ever hear about this supposed current vogue is when clowns like Rush Limbaugh claim that one can’t criticize Obama for fear of being labeled racist. In other words, they accuse “them” (whoever they might be) of “playing the race card” before any such thing has even occurred—or would occur. Talk about Tu Quoque. I hate the whole “reverse racism” bs.

re: #268 Fozzie Bear

Of course war breeds more radicals. I wouldn’t waste time trying to refute Kucinich’s starting premise, because frankly, he is dead on the money. The pertinent question is whether his recommended course of action neccessarily follows from the starting premise, which of course it doesn’t.

This isn’t a black and white thing. Predator drones are an excellent recruiting tool for radical extremists, and yet, we need to keep using them. The two aren’t mutually exclusive.

they’re mutually exclusive for DENNIS.

so you’re saying he can’t correctly formulate a course of action given a premise? congratulations! i agree completely.

Kennedy was slammed for being a Catholic, of course.

Sung to the tune of “Mr. Garrison’s Merry ****ing Christmas”

They think it was a tragedy
When Israel was formed
They failed to murder all the Jews
So on that day they mourn
They dream the time is coming
When the Jews will go away
That’s why I go to Gaza
And to all the Arabs I say…

Hey there, Palestinians!
Happy ****in’ Naqba!
The IDF has kicked your ass
While you said “Allah Ackbar!”
In case you haven’t noticed,
It’s Yom Ha’Atzmaut
So get off your ****ing Muslim ass
And kiss my Hebrew boot.

There is no Yom Ha’Atzmaut
In the U.N., I know
They’re passing resolutions
That Israel has to go
They don’t condemn Zimbabwe,
Or China or Darfur
That’s why on Yom Ha’Atzmaut
I go to the U.N. and roar…

Hey, United Nations!
Happy ****in’ Yom Tov!
Eat a piece of gefilte fish
And pass some to the Pontiff!
In case you haven’t noticed
It’s Israel’s birthday
So get off your anti-Semitic ass
And ****ing celebrate!

Now I heard that Jimmy Carter
Is a Jew-despising prick
He kisses the ass of terrorists
And it really makes me sick.
On Israel’s day of freedom
Jimmy Carter won’t take part
And so I go down to Georgia
And I say to that little fart…

Hey there Jimmy Carter
****ing Chag Sameach
Hashem is going to kick your ass
You Jew-hating nazi pice of shit
In case you haven’t noticed
There’s festive things to do
So let’s all rejoice with Israel
And Happy ****ing Yom Ha’atzmaut to you!

On Yom Ha’Atzmaut I travel round the world and say,
Saudi Arabia, Iran, Pakistan,
And all you French and British too,
Happy ****ing Yom Ha’Atzmaut, to you!

It was douchy, I think, but I accept some level of that kind of vitriol in American politics. I think those yelling such slogans would have been better served by sticking to criticism of specific policies/actions on Bush’s part, much as the tea party crowd would be better served by making fact based criticisms of Obama’s policies/actions.

It’s fine by me that some people don’t like Obama, even though I mostly support the guy. I just wish he were provided a sane critique more often than not. Criticism is good, so long as it is based on somewhat reasonable starting premises.

In the case of (1) I want nothing to do with you. In case of (3) there is nothing I can do to help you. And if case (2) is true then you just aren’t worth the effort.

Unpopular thing to say warning!

President Obama, Gore, Beck, Clinton (both), Rush, W, Kucinich, Rahm all have the same problem. They’ve been cast in the “IF THEY SAID IT, IT MUST BE HORSESHIT!” category by different sides of the political spectrums.

Ace, my point is that railing on Kucinich and calling him a nut and kooky etc. is a sign of something that’s wrong with our national discourse on politics, a focus on style over substance. I’m not sure what’s weird about that.

My father has kind of the same reaction, and when I asked him to name Kucinich’s stances on a number of issues, he couldn’t, and, of course, it turned out that many of Kucinich’s stances were something he agreed with.

I’m not sure why you’re falling into the silly meme of “Do I have to run my posts past you?”, either. You can post whatever you want. It’s my opinion that posts goofing on Kucinich are representative of a problem in US politics.

I think we in the US have a tendency to judge ideas based on where they fall on a fictitious political spectrum, rather than on the quality of the ideas, and that that sucks, bigtime.

It’s my opinion that posts goofing on Kucinich are representative of a problem in US politics.

but i didn’t do that until someone asked for the discussion. which i gladly had. that would be, as opposed to just going off in the manner you dislike.

that is miles from “posts goofing on Kucinich” in a manner that is bad for our discourse.

I assumed irony in his post… even if not: both the Christians and the Islamicists were far from angelic in the last Millenium. Unfortunately while there was a Christian reformation that led them away from convert or die, Islam seems to be stuck on that meme in some regions of the world.

The bottom line is if the US is involved in any way in the Middle East now matter how good the reason or intent we’ve got too many Jews and Christians to suit some of the more radical Imams and Islamic politicians. I’m not isolationist but we’re knee deep in some heavy stuff in Afganistan and I’m worried we’re no better than the last 20 countries that tried to civilize them. The only reason we’re succeeding in Iran as much as we are is that they were for the most part a secular country.

WTF?

Thomas Mitchell, editor of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, has suggested repealing the 19th Amendment. Nice ‘joke’, Tom!

I like to think I can take a joke, and appreciate political commentary intended as humor, but this item from Thomas Mitchell, editor of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, wasn’t amusing. The headline read, “Time to repeal the 19th Amendment?”

People and candidates for public office should be judged on the basis of their ideas, stance on the issues, character, experience and integrity, not on the basis of age, race, creed, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, religion or disability.

Therefore, we must repeal the 19th Amendment. Yes, the one granting suffrage to women. Because? Well, women are biased….. Men are consistent. Women are fickle and biased.

To “prove” his point, Mitchell, head of Nevada’s largest newspaper, pointed to poll results showing women voters in the state preferring Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D) over former state Sen. Sue Lowden (R) by a narrow margin, but preferring Reid over real estate agent Danny Tarkanian by a wide margin. This is evidence of “bias.” (That women voters might perceive Lowden as more qualified than Tarkanian doesn’t seem to enter the equation at all.)

Mitchell also pointed to recent Gallup data that showed, nationwide, women tend to prefer Democrats, while men tend to prefer Republicans. This, apparently, substantiates the argument that … well, actually, I have no idea.

If there’s a clever insight here, it’s hiding well.

In a follow-up piece, Thomas described his published argument as “a bit of free hyperbole.” He proceeded to compare himself to Larry Summers, and insisted that there really are important gender-based differences between men and women. Thomas was especially dismissive of those who found his “repeal the 19th Amendment” argument offensive, accusing them of failing to consider “any merits or demerits of facts in evidence or syllogism used” in his piece. It’s their fault, apparently, not his, that they were insulted.

Remember, this guy runs a major newspaper.

The mind reels.

Oh for the love of Mike: the Crusades were bullshit. They were not justified. Stop trying.

The execution of the Crusades was cruel and awful, but a response to the aggression was necessary. Islamic armies conquered and occupied Spain, Rome was sacked, Constantinople was beseiged, Barbary pirates attacked shipping in the Mediterranean — all this before the First Crusade. Four centuries of aggression is, I think, enough justification for a counter-attack.

At the time, Kucinich insisted that Griscom was not his spiritual adviser but a “teacher and a very good friend.”

Kucinich also has built a relationship with John Hagelin, a Harvard-trained physicist and the Natural Law Party’s 2000 presidential candidate.

Hagelin, who follows the teachings of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the leader of the transcendental meditation movement, attended Kucinich’s presidential campaign stop last month in Fairfield, Iowa, home of the Maharishi University of Management.

Based on what I have seen in the polls, the GOP seems poised to win big in November. I suppose that could change if the administration adjusts some of its policies, but I am not holding my breath. But the GOP really needs to take a hard look at how its image will be affected by spectacles such as the one involving Tancredo. If they think their gains this November are the result of their brilliant policies as opposed to disagreement with some of President Obama’s policies, they would be incorrect. The GOP needs to continue to oppose policies that are wrong or misguided, but they also need to develop their own ideas and change course on issues like climate change, abortion, and their pandering to the extreme religious right.

Nobody did that. You were justifying the Crusades, by attempting to split the very, very fine hair of “Sure, they were badly executed, but the idea was reasonable!”

It wasn’t. Back then, no wars were fought on reasonable grounds, at all. Especially no wars of invasion, looting, pillage, and conquest.

I’m no theologian, but I think radical Islam is in need of much more than a tune-up and a brake job. It is in need of a complete overhaul, including an engine rebuild, a new tranny and a new steering system.

I disagree. Like any malignant growth, radical Islam needs to be excised from the body of the mainstream if that body is to regain it’s overall health & well-being.

There was no need for ‘provocations’ back in that time period. People invaded other countries in the name of God and took victory as assent from God. You did not place it into context, but claimed the Crusades were ‘blowback’ from previous Muslim aggression. They weren’t. They were wars of conquest motivated from religious and financial standpoints.

OK, too easy. How about it being said by someone of Tancredo’s general stature, at a public event?

That’s what I liked about “Shawn of the Dead”, the point being that if the zombies were really among us, how would we tell?

I liked the part where he tries to get his mother away from her zombie husband by telling her his stepfather molested him—but he can’t lie to her, even under these rather extreme circumstances.

How many times have you heard white politicians being told to go back to the country of their ancestry?

Or people telling McCain to “go back to Panama,” especially given he was born there.

re: #489 Obdicut

Nobody did that. You were justifying the Crusades, by attempting to split the very, very fine hair of “Sure, they were badly executed, but the idea was reasonable!”

It wasn’t. Back then, no wars were fought on reasonable grounds, at all. Especially no wars of invasion, looting, pillage, and conquest.

Making it out to be just striking back is moronic.

Come on, people are taught now that the Crusades were all about glorious Christian knight in shining armor fighting against the corrupt and craven forces of Islam.

Of course they never tell you about the slaughter of every Jewish ghetto they came across along the way because they had “crucified Jesus.” Or that most of the crusaders were the utter dregs of society at the time (which was pretty damn dreggy) who set out only because of promises of riches in pillaged loot, lots of Islamic virgins to rape, and land and kingdoms to be won even by common men.

Before you attempt to glorify the crusades you need to read a bit of history about it, if you can’t deal with “dry” non-fiction then perhaps fiction will do? Try reading James Michener’s “The Source” it is written as fiction but is pretty much accurate historically.

re: #491 Fozzie Bear

Its not like the rise of protestantism somehow pacified Christianity. It just balkanized it. Islam is plenty balkanized already.

I agree with Fozzie on this one. The reformation didn’t really slow down the violence, it was the Enlightenment instead. But a new Enlightenment wouldn’t work in our current situation either; because modern fundamentalism (whether Islamic or Christian) was born as a reaction to the Enlightenment principles of religious tolerance and scientific materialism. To try to create modern secular states in places like Afghanistan serves only to through fuel on the fire. The more emphasis is placed on a modern democratic culture, the more violent the backlash of the religious extremists becomes. Enlightenment principles can’t be used to fix the problem because they caused the problem in the first place.

re: #510 Ulysses

…modern fundamentalism (whether Islamic or Christian) was born as a reaction to the Enlightenment principles of religious tolerance and scientific materialism.

Please elaborate with specific examples.

You’re aware that religious pluralism existed in Islamic states during the Middle Ages, right? I’m just asking because it sort of sounds like you’re saying that religious tolerance is anathema to Islam.

Ditto for the last part part. There have been and still are many Muslim scientists. If by scientific materialism you mean that one must reject as false anything that can’t be explained by observable fact, then I’m inclined to agree in that I believe most religious people will not accept those terms. I don’t think that makes them fundamentalists, nor do I believe that religion & science are mutually exclusive.

Secular states have exited in the Muslim world since the 10th century. As a matter of fact, early modern secular concepts can be traced back to a Muslim, Ibn Rushd (Averroes).

Question: When you say “modern secular state” and “modern democratic culture” does that mean of the Western variety? If so, then I’d have to agree as the Muslim world consists of diverse cultures developed over thousands of years and spanning two continents (I’m excluding Western-born Muslims as we’re already part of Western culture). Trying to graft Western culture onto all those other cultures (or trying to supplant theirs with ours) would be utter folly, IMO.

Hi, Thanos. What are your thoughts on the Kansas Board Of Education’s shift back towards Creationism?[Link: www.foxnews.com…]

You really gave me a double take with that — the article is from 2005 - since then the KC school board has been recaptured by sane people, and the policy in the article reversed.

I live in Greenville and this is shameful. Please understand that not everyone here is like this. There are many liberals and many kind people here who hate this type of trash and feel it makes them look like bad in the national arena.

Now they are going after Lindsey Graham but he was a Log Cabin Republican for a while I understand. Cannot wait to see the Bob Jones University crowd grapple with this one !
