Video: A Volcano Erupts in Iceland

Video • Views: 2,977

Tonight’s insanity break is an incredible video by Marc Szeglat of the Icelandic volcano with the jawbreaker name, Fimmfrdurhals.

(Now that an erupting volcano has disrupted air traffic all over the world, I wonder if Bobby Jindal feels a little ashamed of saying, “Instead of monitoring volcanoes, what Congress should be monitoring is the eruption of spending in Washington”?)

What's really amazing is that those little red balls of lava you see are probably the size of a pickup truck...in other words...they're big fucking blobs of molten lava.

Isn't it a comfort to know that when you found your house on solid rock, it's solid all the way down to - - -- -- - - -- - -- - -- -- - -- - -- - - -- -- - - that?
(OK OK, most of the time, that stuff is relatively solid because it's under a lot of pressure.)

In other news, the current issue of Scientific American features an image of the whole sky, northern hemisphere and southern, all from one "camera". How does it see right through the earth? It captures neutrinos rather than photons.

Slippery little devils, aren't they, to just slide right through the earth almost as though it weren't there.

How do we know the "camera" is capturing something real, rather than just making up stories for grownups? Because we can "see" the sun with it.

Last puzzle: how did I get my dashing line past the repetition filter?

re: #41 swamprat

We should be able to roughly calculate the types and amounts of gasses released into our atmosphere from this volcano. Doing so may allow us to formulate predictions about our global warming hypothesis and test the estimates we have made thus far.

The answer so far will be that it's too small to make any difference. This eruption is smaller than the Mt. St. Helens, and that was smaller than Pinatubo, and that was smaller than Krakatoa.

With Krakatoa, we finally begin to get some signal through the noise. It was cold that year, with snow recorded in every month of the year in New Hampshire I think. The aerosol effect cools the planet for a while, until the volcanic ash settles out of the stratosphere.

In the event of a nuclear war that incinerated many of our big cities, we'd have a similar effect but with very fine soot instead of volcanic ash. The soot, being finer, would settle out much more slowly and the same mass of soot would block a lot more sunlight. Those who have run the numbers say that we'd be facing worldwide near-total crop failures for many years. Almost everyone would die. Sobering. A smaller regional war would produce less soot and so quite possibly most of the world would survive the resulting famine. Now isn't that a comfort?

One of my favorite episodes (they're nearly all my 'favorite episode', mind you) is "The Mystery of the Urinal Deuce", which I suspect is probably somewhat lost on people who aren't aware of the 9/11 Truthers. The Truthers were in full swing circa 2006, thanks in large part to a shitty "documentary" film called "Loose Change".

The Loose Change forum denizens managed to convince themselves that, by thoroughly mocking Truthers, Trey Parker and Matt Stone were actually AGREEING with them. You see (so the thinking goes), Matt & Trey can't just come right out and say what they REALLY think about the New World Order and the TRUE STORY of 9/11, so they said JUST THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT THEY REALLY THINK!. Ha ha, fooled them!

It's a well-known fact that Daywalkers have no souls.

He colored his hair when he started going gray and used henna. Henna makes your hair red. It was the style at the time though, not his innovation.

We can't bust heads like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to tell stories that don't go anywhere. Like the time I caught the ferry to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe, so I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. 'Gimme five bees for a quarter', you'd say. Now where was I... oh yeah! The important thing was that I had an onion tied to my belt, which was the style at the time. You couldn't get white onions, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones...

The meme that Sen. Graham is a closeted homosexual appears to be gathering some fans in the wingnutter universe. Example from today:

Is Lindsay Graham compromised?

South Carolina Senator Lindsay Graham is perhaps the most irritating personification of the RINO label in the U.S. Senate. Despite the overwhelming evidence against manmade global warming and the irrefutable damage Cap and Trade legislation will do to our tottering economy, Graham has teamed with leftist Senator John Kerry to resurrect that legislation we all thought was going nowhere.

[...]

At a Saturday, April 17th Tea Party rally in Greenville, SC, Americans for Legal Immigration PAC (ALIPAC) President William Gheen demanded that Graham publicly admit what “many people in South Carolina and Washington, DC know.” As Gheen explained:

I personally do not care about Graham's private life, but in this situation his desire to keep this a secret may explain why he is doing a lot of political dirty work for others who have the power to reveal his secrets. Senator Graham needs to come out of the closet inside that log cabin so the public can rest assured he is not being manipulated with his secret.

If that is Graham's motive, it would certainly explain a lot. It would also provide justification for demanding his removal. Gheen is right that Graham’s private life is no one’s business, but if Graham has bought silence about it by agreeing to back these odious, nation-wrecking initiatives, he has betrayed his country, his Party, and utterly destroyed his own credibility.

That's right, the only reason Graham works on things like climate change and immigration is because he is a compromised closeted gay man!

This is just an example of where Tea Partying is going. It is ugliness, and sickness upon our civil society.

Years ago those with high security clearances who were gay, and were hiding it, were indeed considered a risk. I knew one such man older than I who had to deal with that, even though he was out. During the time of my background checks most of that stigma had faded away, and since I'm not gay anyway it was not personal but nevertheless I felt as if there was something fundamentally wrong with blackmailing people because of how they led their (adult, mutually consenting) lifestyle. What is strange is that I knew several people with clearances above TS who were suspected as being gay, but that didn't stop them from dealing with some of this nation's most sensitive material.

Yet, somehow, when it comes to a Republican senator working on climate change legislation, all of a sudden this is supposed to be something important.

In the Bizarro Universe, John Lennon is still alive. He just released a song called "Imagine", which will soon become his signature piece. The lyrics postulate a Utopian scenario in which conservatives who aren't proudly lowest-common-denominator, anti-intellectual theocrats can easily get along with libertarians who aren't insane anarcho-capitalists. Those two, as the song goes, also find some common ground with liberals who believe government has a certain degree of responsibility to its citizens, but don't really want a nanny.

OT, but thought you should know

Operation continues effort to find missing

Operation Liberator II, the latest undertaking in the U.S. military's ongoing effort to find and recover the 16 American and Coalition service members and civilians missing here, is underway.

"We never have, and we never will stop looking," said Navy Lt. Cmdr. K.C. Chhipwadia, the senior intelligence officer with United States Forces -- Iraq's Personnel Recovery Division.

This current operation began April 15, and continues the work started last summer during Operation Liberator, a two-month-long effort that improved the collection of actionable intelligence relating to missing personnel, said Lt. Col. Kevin Dennehy, director of the USF-I PRD. That operation laid the groundwork for the development of this phase of the search.

"We feel we can build on it with additional intelligence and cooperation and make Liberator II even more successful," Dennehy said.

Although USF-I is spearheading the operation, a wide spectrum of agencies are involved, Dennehy said, including U.S. Central Command and the U.S. Embassy's Office of Hostage Affairs; as well as the FBI, the Defense Intelligence Agency and the National Geospatial Agency.

Chhipwadia said the goal is to conduct Operation Liberator II in conjunction with the Government of Iraq, which is not yet directly involved. However, he expects the operation to be one of the main things that "boots-on-the-ground" Soldiers will discuss with their counterparts in the Iraqi Police and Iraqi Army as they spend time together in leadership meetings and during advise-and-assist missions.

Operation Liberator, which focused intelligence-gathering on the missing individuals, created a grassroots campaign that contributed to the recovery of Navy Capt. Scott Speicher in July 2009, Dennehy said. Speicher, a naval aviator whose jet was shot down on the first night of Operation Desert Storm in 1991, was the only American listed as missing in action from the first Gulf War.

Recently, the PRD helped with the return of Issa Salomi, an American contractor captured by insurgents in January. He was held for two months and released, March 25.

According to Chhipwadia, 11 of the16 individuals still missing in Iraq are American citizens, four are South Africans and one is British. Two of the Americans are members of the military who have been missing since 2006. Air Force Maj. Troy Gilbert disappeared after his F-16 crashed, and Army Reserve Staff Sgt. Ahmed Al-Taie, a linguist for the Baghdad Provincial Reconstruction Team, was kidnapped in Baghdad.

As U.S. forces prepare for the transition out of Iraq, Dennehy said it is important that the U.S. military fulfills its duty to bring all 16 home with dignity and honor.

"The mission to recover personnel will continue in some form or another, because we never stop looking for our people," he said. "Go back to World War One, World War Two, Korea, or Vietnam. We still have people out there looking for our missing."

"You never leave a fallen comrade," Dennehy said. "Even though we are leaving Iraq, we're not leaving our missing."

MIAs from World War 2 are still being found and identified at a rate of about 3 a month. It has only been 4 years since the last World War 1 MIA was returned and more may show up yet.

The Tambora eruption caused widespread hunger and even famine in Europe from crop losses.

Yes it did. That's how it came up. I was positing how much more trouble we're going to be in if the volcano in the same chain as the one that's going off now is triggered by this eruption.

At last the other one has an easier to spell and pronounce in English name. It's really hard to talk about something when you feel completely incapable of either spelling or pronouncing its name.

Charles,

Love the blog, but every time you post a vimeo video it opens up in a full-screen mode I can't get out of, then slows my machine down while it loads on my slow, slow connection.

Is there any way you can perhaps create an option for a smaller version of the video? I'd really appreciate it. Or if that's too much trouble, maybe a link to go to vimeo directly to watch it?

Thanks for reading,
Chak

We should be able to roughly calculate the types and amounts of gasses released into our atmosphere from this volcano. Doing so may allow us to formulate predictions about our global warming hypothesis and test the estimates we have made thus far.

For the climate, the Eyjafjallajoekull incident has been a win-win, because the surprise airtraffic suspension saved more emissions than the volcano put out, and demonstrated that it is possible to implement scheduled airtraffic suspensions that can save even more without any volcanic eruption. The right thing to happen, and the right message being put out by it happening.
