Hmmm, the wingnut blogs are having a lot of fun comparing the peaceful Tea Parties to the more physical protests of the Arizona immigration law protests. Not that I’m excusing anything happening in Phoenix but there’s a big difference; The Arizona protests are actually against real oppression.

No laptop and he really kind of hates computers and the desktop is far away from or (still) analog TV.

It’s amazing how a group of loons have been able to create a fake controversy and convince a large number of folks to not vaccinate. If vaccination rates drop below a certain threshold, we’ll lose herd immunity and have outbreaks of diseases that we have no business worrying about.

The Arizona law is a piece of utter stupidity.
And I’m not one who believes we ought to round up all the illegals here and ship ‘em back; I think we need bigger allowances for legal immigration from Mexico, a workable guest worker program, and much faster processing of immigration requests, along with border enforcement.

But there’s also no doubt in my mind that the citizens in Arizona (and perhaps other places, as well) feel they are under seige. The protection of our borders is a federal responsibility, and our leaders, going back YEARS, have failed us in that responsibility. And if that continues, I’m afraid other states will try to take it upon themselves to do something about it.

One of my friends was telling me that they have gone back through and diagnosed her husband and his brothers on the autism spectrum. In other words, we aren’t having more autistic kids, we’re just doing a better job of diagnosing it.

The problem is that most of the anti-vaxxers’ kids won’t ever get sick. The reason is that they are around kids who are vaccinated, so they are “buffered” against these horrible diseases.

They draw the erroneous conclusion from this experience that their children are perfectly safe not being vaccinated.

(The irony is that the sons of the LDS anti-vaxxers that I know, if they want to serve a mission, will have to receive the vaccines to serve a mission overseas, or be limited to the state. I wonder which they will choose.)

Far as I can see, the worst thing about the law is that it might be unevenly applied by local law enforcement who aren’t trained as well as federal authorities. The worst thing Janet Napolitano is griping about is she’s afraid it will increase the workload of federal authorities. Well, if AZ goes around arresting legal residents, I sympathize with her. Otherwise, she should just ask for a bigger budget and thank AZ for doing her job for her…but I suspect she would rather have a turf war and make a political fight about it.

Most of the law is about sanctioning employers who hire illegals and human traffickers.

Frankly, I don’t see what is so draconian about it. What does it do that federal law doesn’t already do?

My sister has a recipe for sourdough cinnamon rolls start starts driving the olfactories crazy from the time she sets them out to rise. By the time they’re halfway baked, you’ve lost your mind completely. I’ll talk her out of the recipe someday. Hey, I’m your brother.. c’mon. Takes a lot of practice to get it right, anyways. A long and windy road, sourdough baking is.

It’s not a license to go harass “brown people”, but it’s close. As it stands, Phoenix police can refer criminal suspects to the ICE when warranted.

Now, all state police have more authority to make citizenship/identification inquiries and judgments, and they only need to be involved in ‘regular contact’ to do so.

Regular police contact is basically any other reason for them to be asking for your ID and getting involved in your situation (broken taillight, etc.).

The perception is worse than reality, but the reality ain’t great and the perception is both highly damaging and highly predictable.

It’s incredibly clumsy and unhelpful, IMHO, at best…and license to profile at worst.

That mirrors my take on this. It’s easy to manufacture a reason to have official contact. I was once pulled over for failing to make a right-turn signal from a “right-turn only” lane.

So I think a bad cop could abuse this. But that’s the case with most laws.

I just don’t see the justification for the over-the-top rhetoric. For instance, Archbishop Mahoney says this is “the country’s most retrogressive, mean-spirited and useless anti-immigrant law” and wonders whether Arizonans are “now reverting to German Nazi and Russian Communist techniques”.

Take a bulb or 5 of garlic, chop off the bottom, dip in olive oil & roast.

That mirrors my take on this. It’s easy to manufacture a reason to have official contact. I was once pulled over for failing to make a right-turn signal from a “right-turn only” lane.

So I think a bad cop could abuse this. But that’s the case with most laws.

I just don’t see the justification for the over-the-top rhetoric. For instance, Archbishop Mahoney says this is “the country’s most retrogressive, mean-spirited and useless anti-immigrant law” and wonders whether Arizonans are “now reverting to German Nazi and Russian Communist techniques”.

He had me at mean-spirited and useless. Trotting out the Nazi and the Communist…gah. I hate that crap.

Fair enough. Sorry for the thread-policing. However, you will find lengthy descriptions of negative effects from the law— not the least that its unconstitutional and will cost the state a fortune in legal costs— in the other thread.

I’ve read most of the other threads. I’m not convinced it’s as bad as many make it out to be. Overall my feelings are slightly negative on it.

Well, if you’ve read the other threads, then you know the reasons why people are calling it the draconian pile of crap that it is.

It will make the problem of violence and crime worse, by making illegal aliens stridently avoid any and all contact with the police. This means they won’t inform on violent criminals in their population. They probably will also be less likely to seek out medical care, meaning that we’ll have more contagious diseases floating around, too.

From a law enforcement standpoint alone, the law is crap.

Then there’s the fact that it’s going to be killed in the courts, which will cost the state millions and potentially overturn convictions. Yay.

Just got done watching the Frontline Vax episode. Unlike Fox, Frontline is actually fair and balanced. Ultimately scientific reality will win out. But unfortunately there are going to be multitudes who buy into this pseudo scientific nonsense parading itself as an “alternative” that will literally get people killed. Sad and in some cases criminal.

Far as I can see, the worst thing about the law is that it might be unevenly applied by local law enforcement who aren’t trained as well as federal authorities. The worst thing Janet Napolitano is griping about is she’s afraid it will increase the workload of federal authorities. Well, if AZ goes around arresting legal residents, I sympathize with her. Otherwise, she should just ask for a bigger budget and thank AZ for doing her job for her…but I suspect she would rather have a turf war and make a political fight about it.

Most of the law is about sanctioning employers who hire illegals and human traffickers.

Frankly, I don’t see what is so draconian about it. What does it do that federal law doesn’t already do?

it raises awareness…all else is hyperbole….what’s shameful is that it has come to this, thanks to the feds neglecting their job

I have friends who are otherwise intelligent and educated people who’ve fallen for this anti-vaxxer nonsense. I can’t even have a civil discussion with them about it anymore.

The real victims in all this are their daughters, aged 2 and 5. I hope my friends never have cause to find out how far from reality their position really is.
