Crist to run for Senate as independent candidate, sources say

(CNN) -- Florida Gov. Charlie Crist has decided to run as a non-aligned candidate rather than compete for the Republican Party nomination in his bid for the Senate, a GOP fundraiser tells CNN.

The fundraiser, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said that Crist has begun contacting financial supporters to tell them that he is running as a non-party affiliated candidate and to ask for their continued support.

Once the overwhelming favorite in the battle for the Republican Senate nomination, Crist is now trailing former Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio by more than 20 points, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released earlier this month.

But the survey offered hope Crist could win in November if he ran as an independent. In this scenario, Crist would have a slight edge over Rubio and a larger lead over Rep. Kendrick Meek, the likely Democratic nominee, in a three-way general election matchup.

Crist is expected to officially declare his intentions during an event Thursday afternoon in his hometown of St. Petersburg, Florida. Crist's campaign is calling it "a candidate qualifying event." Crist has until Friday to declare his intentions.

62 Charles Johnson  Wed, Apr 28, 2010 1:01:54pm

Ah ha. Found out why the DB server had that little hangup -- it's actually related to a feature in the new Linkage page.

The Linkviewer had an option to sort by number of comments per link, and I kept that feature in the new Linkage page. But the MySQL query that was nice and fast when we had fewer posted links in the database does not scale up very well at all; with almost 200,000 links, it's dog slow because it does a full table scan. I hadn't noticed this before because the feature wasn't as easy to find in the previous Linkviewer and not many people used it.

For now, I removed the option to sort by number of comments, until I see if it's possible to put together a query that's more efficient. You can still use the "Most-commented links" feature in the "Show top-rated linkage" area at the top of the main LGF pages, because it limits the time interval to a maximum of 7 days.

Rep. Duncan Hunter backs deporting U.S.-born children of undocumented immigrants

Paul/Hunter in '12.

Currently, Title 8 of the U.S. Code fills in the gaps left by the Constitution. Section 1401 defines the following as people who are "citizens of the United States at birth:"

•Anyone born inside the United States *
•Any Indian or Eskimo born in the United States, provided being a citizen of the U.S. does not impair the person's status as a citizen of the tribe
•Any one born outside the United States, both of whose parents are citizens of the U.S., as long as one parent has lived in the U.S.
•Any one born outside the United States, if one parent is a citizen and lived in the U.S. for at least one year and the other parent is a U.S. national
•Any one born in a U.S. possession, if one parent is a citizen and lived in the U.S. for at least one year
•Any one found in the U.S. under the age of five, whose parentage cannot be determined, as long as proof of non-citizenship is not provided by age 21
•Any one born outside the United States, if one parent is an alien and as long as the other parent is a citizen of the U.S. who lived in the U.S. for at least five years (with military and diplomatic service included in this time)
•A final, historical condition: a person born before 5/24/1934 of an alien father and a U.S. citizen mother who has lived in the U.S.
* There is an exception in the law — the person must be "subject to the jurisdiction" of the United States. This would exempt the child of a diplomat, for example, from this provision.

Anyone falling into these categories is considered natural-born, and is eligible to run for President or Vice President. These provisions allow the children of military families to be considered natural-born, for example.

OT: Charlie Crist has finally declared that he will be running as an independent, I knew he would. Rubio is young handsome and very telegenic, and has been kicking his ass in the closed Republican primary polls. Meanwhile the statewide open polls still show Crist ahead if he runs as an independent.

Another Republican, a popular and effective one, has to boot himself out of the party because he isn't idealogical enough on a few social issues to get "Republican" votes. Damn but this is getting discouraging, where the hell is the party leadership?

The query that was hanging up:

SELECT * FROM linkage ORDER BY (SELECT COUNT(*) FROM comments WHERE comments.linkid = linkage.id) DESC, linkage.id DESC LIMIT 0, 25

The subquery can probably be replaced with a join, but ordering by number of posted comments for the full linkage table is still going to be problematic. Limiting the time interval is probably the only way to do it.

One would hope that his remarks went on to say that he was against separating families, and that the children should leave with their parents.
So many women die while trying to get across the border to give birth to 'anchor babies'. It's a real dilemma.... natural citizenship is part and parcel of one's birth country, but when the birth site is chosen purely to obtain the benefits of citizenship.....
There's no good solution as of now.

Republicans Say They Will Stop Blocking Debate on Financial Overhaul.

They've reached a deal on some of the key issues with Sen. Dodd, so the debate will move forward according to Sen. Shelby.

Sen. Richard Shelby, the top Republican on the Senate Banking committee, said he has assurances that Democrats will adjust his banking regulation bill to address concerns that it perpetuates bailouts.

The concession sets the stage for Republicans to withdraw objections that have stalled the bill in the Senate.

The agreement does not bridge other significant differences between the parties on the bill.

Latino businesses feel pinch of new immigration law

"I think they're afraid of being out on the streets knowing they're going to get pulled over by the sheriff," says Manrique, a Mexican-born U.S. citizen who has lived in Phoenix since the 1990s. "A lot of people told me they're afraid to go out even though the law's not fully passed."
...
Manrique says customers started to become scarce a few weeks ago, when news surfaced that the bill was likely to pass. Then came Friday, the day Brewer signed the legislation.

"The streets just went empty. Usually on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, we're packed. But this weekend was empty like I'd never seen it before," Manrique said.

Snark aside, there's not often a question of having to ' pretend to know ' the intent of a woman who crosses the border in less than comfortable circumstances while forty weeks pregnant.

That makes sense.

So, how many women crossed the border last year pregnant? The last 10 and 20 years (ie what's the trend)? How many died? Of the remaining illegals that weren't pregnant when crossing the border, what percentage came with the expressed intent of having babies here?

These are mostly rhetorical questions as my point is that unless this is a really large and documented percentage of the illegal problem, it seems a bit over the top to call American citizens anchor babies.

What happens when pro-immigration marchers talk like tea partyers?

For a few days, liberal blogs have been buzzing over a column by Tim Wise in which the author angrily wonders what coverage of the mostly white tea party movement would look like if the protesters were black. Americans for Legal Immigration PAC -- which has endorsed Arizona U.S. Senate candidate J.D. Hayworth -- helpfully provides an answer. A new statement from the group trumps up an April 23 video of a rally against Arizona's new immigration bill to make the case that a protester was threatening violence.

An anchor baby is defined as an offspring of an illegal immigrant or other non-citizen, who under current legal interpretation becomes a United States citizen at birth. These children may instantly qualify for welfare and other state and local benefit programs. Additionally with the passage of the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act, the child may sponsor other family members for entry into the United States when he or she reaches the age of twenty-one (See also Chain Migration). The sheer numbers are staggering. In Stockton, California (2003), 70 percent of the 2,300 babies, born in San Joaquin General Hospital’s maternity ward were anchor babies.

This appears to be written using facts...

Exactly. I know Canada does the same thing. I'd just like to see the law include something like "A child born to parents not in the United States legally does not receive American citizenship unless at birth they have no other citizenship."

Issues like this came up with the breakup of the Soviet Union, and I'm sure we'll see it again in the future. Mom and dad make a run for the states, the country on their passport no longer exists, they haven't requested citizenship from successor state so the child is not actually a citizen of Russia, or the Ukraine or what have you. Its rare, but just something I'd like to see included.
