Well, we're back, thanks to a quicker than expected game.

Greetings from Boston tonight where we are on a boil-water alert due to a pesky little 10-foot pipe leaking 8 million gallons of water per hour into a nearby river! The only bright side is that it's going into a river rather than flooding a downtown.

I'm stoked because I finally managed to solve a long-running performance problem with the display of the Linkage page, and the individual link pages with comments.

The problem turned out to be that MySQL's query optimizing code was picking the wrong index -- even though I'd created one especially intended to solve the problem. This is the first time I've seen the MySQL optimizer be so stubborn and wrong-headed.

I had to pull out the "USE INDEX" clause to force it to use the compound index I created. Once I did that, some things that were really slow (sometimes even causing the server to bog down) suddenly started working really swiftly again.

Using the EXPLAIN clause, I can see a huge difference in some simple lookups. Queries that took several seconds are now measured in tenths of a second. Woot.

Exquisite. Curious, is there a reason/meaning for the bandanna?

It muffles the strings above the nut, makes the sound cleaner. Also looks cool.

I'm not a database guy but my coworkers are all on the noSQL bandwagon. Schema-less databases FTW!

Dufour is managing a decent rasgueado there at the end, haven't seen much of that in jazz. Put to good use, too.

That's one happy lookin' dog.

I found a lost dog this morning, a little Yorkie puppy started following me as I walked my dog. The Yorkie was just happy happy happy. My dog was like, WTF is this?

I got him to follow us home, put my dog inside and the Yorkie on the leash, and went down the street, knocking on doors. Everyone on the street who has a Yorkie has a problem with them getting loose, for some reason.

Found the owner, she was coming out of her house with a worried look and I knew immediately she was looking for that dog.

Yeah, one of the neighbors finally managed to contain her dog when she put up a chicken-wire-like mesh around the bottom of her fence. Her dog weighs, like yours did, 4 pounds, could get through the slats. It's a Yorkie, too, and also happy happy happy - Yorkies seem to always be happy, but honestly, they're not the brightest bulbs in dogdom.

I had a rescued English Pointer, I think from a puppy mill, who I swear was puppy retarded. She made bean dip look thoughtful. Training her to do the most basic things that the other dogs did automatically required endless repetitions and patience. She was also the most loving and dearest creature to ever walk the earth. Did you read the piece by Jonah Goldberg where he called Nimoy a "pornographer"?

Sorry Jonah, Nimoy doesn't do porn, he does nudes.

Yeah, maybe I'm crazy, but those were just nudes, not porn.

From my understanding (I learned this from the movie The Last Castle for better or worse) the hoisting the American flag upside down can be a classic sign of distress.

Thus there exists the possibility that those people are distressed about the path the American government is taken rather than trying to deface a symbol of their nation.

But there could be a deeper meaning going on here than I realize....

The inverted flag is a distress sign, and I've seen people at the Tea Parties use it similarly. I think in both cases, it's a bit over the top as protest imagery.

Marking the flag is usually considered disrespectful, although at the Mill College Pow-Wow, I've seen a flag carried for the dancers which shows a man in a feathered warbonnet superimposed over the bars, and I do not think that's meant to be disrespectful. The flags come out when they dance for the Army personnel overseas, and to honor the vets.

That does in fact apply to a flag that is simply flown upside down. The flag in the first picture also has the words upon it "THIS IS STOLEN LAND" (ALLCAPS in original). That, to me, constitutes defacement.

I've seen those flags. They're popular in other genres, too. You can find them in biker shops and country western concerts/festivals. Sometimes with an eagle on it, other designs.

The whole flag debate is intriguing. I guess because we've had a recognizable flag for so long we've become more attached to its symbolism. But when we were still a fledgling country, you would make your own flag and if you look at the antique shows, people still find old revolutionary homemade flags.

You're probably right about the fire. The photo looks like an effort that would have morphed into the International Ladies' Garment Workers Union. (ILGWU was my first union, I was a 19yr old working in a garment district warehouse.)

Were you? Wow. I've had family working in the garment district, but don't know if they were union people.

There's a very good chance they were ILGWU. "Look for the Union label."
