Awesome. There is a stark contrast between the professional soldiers who carried out the raid and the scruffy looking pirates.

They weren't fooling around- strafing the deck with machine gun fire before repelling in.

Don't fuck with the Dutch. If their guns don't get you, the language will.

Thats very cool! Train 'em up and go get 'em! As far as I'm concerned and pirate boat spotted on its way to hijack a ship should be blown out o' the water! Gee, you think that putting a small surveillance helicopter aboard the cargo ships and arm them to the teeth would put a stop to the hijackings?

I grew up with a Dutch family living next door, and let me tell you they are very volatile folks! Permissive to a ridiculous point but don't cross the line or you'll regret it! I leaned it the hard way! Their my second family and I love them to pieces but hooo boy, look out if you piss them off! I'll never forget the first flight I took after 911, I was feeling fine, even reading a book while we waited to take off. Then the plane started moving toward the runway and I freaked out and the tears started down my face! I didn't even realize I was scared until the plane started moving! Only my innate good sense kept me from going outta my mind and causing a scene. I asked the flight attendant for some water and as soon as she saw my face she knew I was on the virge and rushed to get me a drink. My fellow passengers were watching me like a hawk for about the first 10 or 15 minutes of the flight the I got control of my panic and things eased off. Not something I'll ever forget.

If he would just say something worth listening to folks would stick around! He has a really bad habit of sticking his foot in his mouth and offending as many people as he can so nobody wants to give him the time of day let alone listen to him talk! Besides the entire world knows he just a puppet for the mullahs, and all they want is to destroy Israel. Why listen to him if all he does is spout gibberish from the extremists who pull his strings?

Don't try to pick up everything as a racial slur - our sense of humor is possibly a bit coarser than the US-american, and we use some words that indicate racism in English, but are normal part of our polite vocab. For example, the dutch word 'neger', obviously resembles 'n*****' - however, in dutch this actually mean 'black person'. However, don't refer to someone as a 'black person', as that (at least to me) would be a racial slur... it's not easy to discriminate these things if you haven't spend a reasonable time in the country I guess.

It's precisely the same inversion in German. But try explaining to an American that "Schwarzer" is the pejorative and "Neger" the polite term. Oddly, I've seen more white Americans freak out about that than blacks.

Oh? Really? Manners are on the dive here and if you say thank you to someone for helping you they look at you like your crazy. I spent over 20 years in customer service and let me tell you the most abusive crap came my way on a regular basis! Most customer service agents these days are like robots, no smile, no real help and is all because of the abuse customers heap on them. I try real hard not to take any anger or frustration on customer service agents because I've been there and received that! I'm not sure I ever want to back into that end of business again. I haven't grown up with racism and racial sensitivity all around me, and it still surprises me sometimes just how sensitive the American consciousness is towards racial words, even ones that aren't slurs. And yes, it is primarily among white Americans.

Soon after I first got to the US, I was talking to a friend and he was trying to point out someone he knew across a large, crowded hall. We spent ten minutes with 'that guy, there - in the... suit, next to, um, the blonde girl', and I even made a couple of trips across the hall to introduce myself to said person, failing both times. Eventually, I started to realise who he meant, and said, 'you mean the black guy?'

One black guy in a room of 200 people, and he was still so sensitive about using the descriptor that we played a ridiculous dance for ten minutes.

An exploding manhole on West 40th Street in Midtown shot flames three stories high at 1:40 p.m. Monday, and at least one other manhole cover blew off, fire officials said. No injuries were immediately reported. After the explosion, a firefighter yelled: “It’s not Disneyland, people. Get the hell out of the way.”

I would not be at all surprised to learn that what I learned in the 1980s is now vollkommen überholt. Now that I think about it, it may already have been on the cusp of changing when I left. But when I was learning German in the States, my teachers and professors made a point of teaching the same rule that you mentioned as being in effect in Dutch.

What I believe is still true is the reversal of sensitivities between Americans and Germans regarding sex/"gender" designations. Americans get upset if you call them a "waitress" or an "actress" - everybody's a waiter and an actor now. In German, it's quite the opposite - women insist on having the female designatress "-in" put after their job/profession. Well I am back again to ask for opinions on what to buy.

I played with a friends ipod Touch last night for hours (even download the Kindle app for it and read a free book) and now I'm pretty sure I am going to buy one since it fills my 2 wants.
Want to be able to sit on my sofa and wander the internet and I can read books on it.
The 8G is under $200 which is much more in my price range.
What I am wondering if anyone has had the chance to use both the 8G and 32G and if there is a big difference in how they work?
I will not be downloading movies or tv shows to watch on such a small scree, but may put a limited amount of music on it.

As always I appreciate your opinions.
Thanks

It's not as if the guy didn't know he's black.

You're right, there's often this dance, just to show how unfazed we are by race.

This is absolutely true, to call a Schauspielering a Schauspieler would just be wrong.
However, I have the idea that in the US, gender-based discrimination is sometimes tackled a bit better, by for example forcing a certain % of female speakers on federally-funded meetings (I'm talking about academia here). Europe is lacking behind in that, and sometimes it still feels like the 'old boys network' if you see some meetings here.

One of the other fox fuckwits, Eric Bolling, said the following:

The question is, and I saw Dana Perino earlier on the show saying, you know, what, why the delay in the response. You guys were pointing out, nine days before it’s even addressed. Twelve days before he made a formal comment. The question is did they let this thing leak? I mean, I know BP said 1,000 barrels a day went to 5,000. Did they let it leak a little bit and say, "boy I don’t know." I mean, the conspiracy theorists would say, maybe they let it leak for a while and then they address the issue.

Yeah, let's let it "leak" (underwater fucking gusher of 20,000+ barrels per day isn't exactly a "leak")...what harm could that do? We can just sink a giant cork from Acme cork company (Wile. E. Coyote is their sales rep) and plug the hole when we're ready.

One incident no matter how horrible does not a good policy foundation make. Certainly BP needs to be held accountable for the damage and anything they could have done to prevent it.

This is tragic all over and it doesn't need to be politicized.

Thanks to the Exxon Valdez and GHWB, BP is responsible...for up to 75 million dollars in damages. 75 million. For a company with a 6 billion dollar quarterly profit. That's 1.25% of their profit margin...for a quarter.

As far as the politicization of this, the damages are going to be in the tens of billions and last for decades...it will be a political football for a generation.

I'll only link stories that have actual merit. The diarists at dKos are pretty good at doing research, and while the site is dismissed as a 'liberal blog' I have seen on several occasions where they cover a story several weeks, if not months, before any actual "media" companies cover them. Granted, there are some CT diarists there, but by and large, many of the regulars who hit the rec list and front pagers are very good at citing their research.

They lease the rig, so it's not an outright ownership. That complicates matters some, but they do have legal obligations to act where they are liable and culpable. They're the public face of this crisis, so they've got to act to mitigate the oil spill done at a facility leased by BP. The owner of the rig is also liable, particularly if it turns out that the owner was somehow responsible for the incident leading to the fire/spill.

As for the liability limits/fund limits, consider that these laws were written following Exxon Valdez, and the costs/fees/fund limits didn't keep pace with the rate of inflation and costs today, so they would have to be adjusted for inflation to keep them at levels consistent with today's situation. The law should be written with a CPI inflation measure - so the levels rise periodically and don't leave a funding gap in case of a disaster.

AP story on the Hutaree release:

Judge: 9 militia members charged with plotting against US can go free while awaiting trial
[Link: hosted.ap.org...]

DETROIT (AP) -- A judge ordered on Monday that nine jailed members of a Michigan militia be released, saying there's no risk to the public if they go home while awaiting trial on charges of trying to plot war against the government.

U.S. District Judge Victoria Roberts overturned the April 2 decision of a federal magistrate judge and questioned the strength of the government's case. She said all nine can be released with electronic monitoring devices and other strict conditions.
......
Prosecutors "need not wait until people are killed before it arrests conspirators," the judge said. "But the defendants are also correct: Their right to engage in hate-filled, venomous speech is a right that deserves First Amendment protection."

Roberts said prosecutors failed to show that jail was the only way to protect the public and ensure that the nine return for court hearings. She had heard nearly 10 hours of testimony and argument over two days last week as militia members appealed the earlier detention order.

"Discussions about killing local law enforcement officers - and even discussions about killing members of the judicial branch of government - do not translate to conspiring to overthrow, or levy way against, the United States government," the judge said Monday.

If it turns out that the work they did contributed to the accident and/or subsequent spill, watch for lawsuits to fly between Transocean, BP, and Halliburton over cleanup costs. BP might front the costs now, but sue the others to recover their costs. It's in BP's interest from a PR standpoint to get on top of the cleanup costs and make every effort to mitigate the spill, but then go after Halliburton over any potential failure on their part.

You mean like the Army Corps of Engineers and their incompetence in constructing/maintaining the levees in and around NOLA? That wasn't corporate greed - just incompetence and decades of ignoring the real possibility of a direct hit on a city built largely below sea level and protected by a system that was insufficient to handle even a glancing blow from a hurricane.

Also, we have no idea whether corporate greed played a role here - or whether it was a mechanical failure or human error or some other factor/factors that were involved. More regulations may not have prevented this disaster and I don't have a time machine to know whether an acoustic shutoff would have worked here - or it would have failed along with the other shutoff systems in place.

Another case of prosecutor misconduct:

[Link: reason.com...]

The Crime and Federalism blog reports on the case of Carlos Alfredo Simon-Timmerman, a New Yorker who was stopped in Puerto Rico last year on his way back from a vacation in Venezuela. Simon-Timmerman was stopped by U.S. Customs agents, who found a pornographic video in his bag entitled Little Lupe the Innocent; Don’t Be Fooled By Her Baby Face. The movie featured Lupe Fuentes, a porn actress who, as the movie title suggests, is a 23-year-old with a more youthful appearance.
......
Simon-Timmerman's attorney was even able to get Fuentes to confirm her age over the phone. That still wasn't enough for the prosecutor.

Finally... Little Lupe herself would have to fly to Puerto Rico, show her passport to the prosecutor, and testify under oath that she was really, really not 13 years old.

"My fans mean everything to me, " Fuentes told Asylum via her publicist. "It was important to me to make the trip to Puerto Rico to show support to someone who did no wrong."

That was last month. After Fuentes' appearance, Simon-Timmerman was finally released, and the charges against him were dropped. It took the graciousness of a porn star to keep Simon-Timmerman from going to prison.

Saved by a porn star.

We have Arizona at one end of the spectrum, and NY's Gov. Paterson now appears to go to the other - he wants to create pardon panels to help people avoid deportation under what he thinks is harsh federal law.

Gov. David Paterson on Monday said he will create a panel to help selected immigrants with criminal convictions avoid deportation under "harsh'' federal laws. Paterson said New York would be the first state to create a "pardon panel'' aimed specifically at investigating requests of legal immigrants facing deportation because of a past convictions.

Paterson said he would pardon immigrants who meet criteria such as rehabilitation and a lack of danger to society. The Democrat is seeking to combat what he calls harsh and rigid federal measures that result in deporting of immigrants who have shown considerable rehabilitation.

Paterson should focus on passing the state budget (now more than a month late - than trying to find a way to override federal law on deportations, which are quite clear.

I'm not sure Governors and others should be picking and choosing which laws they want to follow and which ones they don't.

I'm not saying Patterson is right or wrong. I'd like to know more about why he wants to do it. If it's anything about protecting people asking for political asylum, I can understand it, but I don't know.

re: #318 sattv4u2

What do you think the percentage of the flow coming across the southern border qualify? Unlike a Cuba or a North Korea or an Iran, I don't hear much about political oppresion via the Mexican gov't as a reason

I don't know much beyond our immigration issues. And he lives in NY, not AZ.
