US Anti-Abortion Group Trying to Sabotage Kenya’s Constitution

Religion • Views: 3,813

Why are American fundamentalist Christian groups suddenly so active in Africa? Earlier we learned that leading evangelicals are behind the push to make homosexuality a capital crime in Uganda, and now we have a Pat Robertson front group spending large amounts of money to subvert Kenya’s proposed new constitution.

New York — An American-based group opposed to abortion has said it is donating “tens of thousands of dollars” to help defeat Kenya’s proposed constitution.

The American Centre for Law and Justice’s Jay Sekulow told the Sunday Nation that his Washington-based organisation is working through its office in Nairobi to tell Kenyans that the draft constitution would allow “abortion on demand”.

It is the first revelation of foreign funding given to church leaders in Kenya to campaign against the draft constitution.

The American Centre for Law and Justice is a non-governmental public interest law firm founded in 1990 by the controversial televangelist Pat Robertson well-known in Kenya for his programs on the Christian Broadcast Network.

Information available on the Internet indicates the centre has an annual budget of about $14 million (about Sh1 billion).

It's pretty rank paternalism. They can't win here in the US, so they think that they can use the enormous disparity in wealth to try to get what they want in Africa.

This doesn't go far enough for them:

Although the Constitution guarantees the right to life, and the draft provides that life begins at conception, church leaders have vowed to fight it because of its provisions on abortion and kadhis' courts.

They object to the section of Article 26 that empowers doctors to end a pregnancy if it endangers a woman's life or she needs emergency treatment.

The section reads: "Abortion is not permitted unless, in the opinion of a trained health professional, there is need for emergency treatment, or the life or health of the mother is in danger, or if permitted by any other law."

...

The anti-abortion movement in the United States argues that the wording of the Kenyan draft constitution would in practice make abortion much more widely available in Kenya.

*facepalm*

14 lawhawk  Wed, May 5, 2010 9:43:51am

Well, what exactly does the draft constitution say?

According to a version from February 2010:

Right to life
26. (1) Every person has the right to life.
(2) The life of a person begins at conception.
(3) A person shall not be deprived of life intentionally, except to the extent
authorised by this Constitution or other written law.
(4) Abortion is not permitted unless, in the opinion of a trained health
professional, there is need for emergency treatment, or the life or health of
the mother is in danger, or if permitted by any other written law.

That isn't abortion on demand as written. That's abortion for medical purposes or if allowed by other Kenyan statutes. If anything, that would appear to codify whatever Kenya has already previously determined to be acceptable practice in their country. Wiki also notes that the some Christian groups in the country have mischaracterized the current draft constitution as permitting same sex marriage, although an early draft did contain that language - the current one does not.

17 KingKenrod  Wed, May 5, 2010 9:45:51am

The article is a little jumbled, but it sounds like the draft constitution only allows abortion if the mother's life is in danger, and it also defines life as beginning at conception. It's weird the evangelicals are fighting this.

The article also mentions the church opposes a separate justice system for muslims, which is also in the constitution.

Agree or disagree with the actions of the pro-lifers, they're right in thinking the constitutional restriction isn't worded strong enough. The section essentially says abortion is banned, unless you pass a law allowing it. That's not much of a constitutional protection. That'd be like if the 13th Amendment said "Slavery if henceforth banned, unless you pass a law saying it isn't."

re: #15 Obdicut

It's a pretty clear indication of what they really want in the US, as well.

Of course it is. Here's a reproductive rights roundup for this week:

April 30: Abortion’s New Battle Lines

While we’ve been distracted by Tea Party antics, the government’s efforts to sack Goldman Sachs and the tawdry drama of John Edwards and his baby’s mama, a rash of states has rushed to restrict access to abortion.

Two weeks ago, the governor of Nebraska signed a law that banned most abortions after 20 weeks on the theory that that’s when the fetus can feel pain. But as Caitlin Borgmann, a City University of New York law professor, wrote in The Los Angeles Times, “There is nothing approaching a scientific consensus on fetal pain at 20 weeks’ gestation.”

On Wednesday, Mississippi’s Legislature sent a bill to the governor that forbids public financing of abortions. The prohibition stands even in cases of severe birth defects.

Tuesday, the Oklahoma Legislature overrode a gubernatorial veto to pass two abortion laws. One requires women, even those seeking to end a pregnancy resulting from rape or incest, to have an ultrasound and have the fetus described to them. The other prevents mothers from suing doctors who withhold information about fetal birth defects.

And on Friday, the Florida Legislature passed a bill also requiring all women seeking an abortion to undergo an ultrasound. Even if the women don’t want to see the image, the doctor must still describe it to them.

It is a striking series of laws, enacted mostly by men, that seek legal control over women’s bodies.

Since then OK is suspending their ultrasound law for 45 days. BTW, that's only to give the supporters of the law more time to prepare their arguments against the legal challenges mounted against it.

Faisal Shahzad was added to the no-fly list as soon as his name was known. Emirates hadn't updated their no-fly list which is why he was allowed on the plane. The FBI, however, was tracking all flight manifests and found him - that's called doing their job and doing it well. Had Emirates had their list updated, they could have notified the FBI and he wouldn't have gotten as close to taking off as he did.

Total chaos erupted in Greece today, 3 dead.

Greece crisis: three bank workers killed in street protests

Greek unions mobilised crowds of 25,000 angry people to march against the government in protests at the 'austerity measures' introduced to try to tackle the country's debt.

Protesters threw petrol bombs, and tried to gain entry to the parliament building, eventually setting fire to the bank building with 25 staff inside, killing two women and a man.

Witnesses said the fire spread rapidly and clashes between riot police hampered fire brigade access to the building. "We took 15 minutes to get to the site because it was very difficult to get there," said Panayiotis Falaras, a spokesman for the fire brigade.

George Papandreou, the Greek prime minister, lashed out at the perpetrators of the attack and said they had hijacked a democratic protest.

He said: "We're a free and democratic country and every citizen has the right to demonstrate. To protest is one thing, to murder is another.

"The perpetrators of the violence will be arrested and judged."

There is a picture of a man on fire with this description: " A riot police officer is engulfed in flames from a fire bomb thrown by protesters in Athens... Photo: AP"

He was in custody after being hauled off a Dubai-bound plane he boarded Monday night at John F. Kennedy International Airport despite being under surveillance and placed on the federal no-fly list.

Passengers disembarking from the flight many hours later described a calm scene as he was removed from the plane. They said he didn't put up a struggle.

What I found slightly amusing is they were going to go ahead and let the plane take off anyway before someone thought it might be a good idea to check the plane since they just removed a terrorist.

re: #38 Shiplord Kirel

Oh, there was luck involved in the captured, but not the way Rush wants people to believe.

We were lucky that Shahzad: 1) doesn't know how to build a bomb that actually detonated (which would have made the effort to gather evidence more difficult); 2) didn't know that VIN numbers are located all over the vehicle, not just in the window well; 3) didn't know that his cellphone and email were being tracked back to the source; 4) didn't know that the feds were able to add him to a no-fly list; etc.

Law enforcement caught several breaks, but there was also luck that was made, because they were able to tie together various strings of evidence to link back to Shahzad and did so in short order.

However, everything I've seen shows that despite being put on the no-fly list, the airline didn't check that list until after he was boarded, but even though that event occurred, the plane wasn't going anywhere because a final check found he had been on the list and was removed. The plane was cleared to disembark but after conversations with Shahzad, the plane was called back to gate to have two other people questioned and bags rescreened.

How can someone subvert a constitution until it's been written? The subversion isn't so much a subversion of the constitution as it is of Kenyan independence. What business is it of Pat Robertson to say anything one way or another about a proposed constitution for Kenya?

The whole thing is moot. Kenya is a failed state. The capital city goes by the nickname Nairobbery. Neighboring Tanzania has had to close the northern entrance to its Kilimanjaro National Park because of raids from Kenya. Whatever constitution is adapted, the law on the ground will be whatever the man at the checkpoint says it is. Mostly that will mean that a payment is required.

Pakistan Taliban praises Faisal Shahzad Time Sq. bomb try; says no link, but more like him coming

A Taliban spokesman in Pakistan insisted Wednesday that his group was not involved in the failed car-bombing terror attack in crowded Times Square this past weekend.

Azam Tariq, speaking to CNN, praised the efforts of arrested suspect Faisal Shahzad - who told authorities he received five months of explosives training in Pakistan.

"Very good," said Tariq. But he said that training did not come from his organization, and they had no link whatsoever to the bombing suspect.

The Taliban has dispatched "fighters" to the U.S., Tariq said, and their plans will soon become evident.

5. didn't have enough sense to book his flight prior to the attempt and go to the airport immediately following the attempt (or even 24 hours after).

Why should they care about another country's constitution? That's the issue, you know.

I disagree with the idea that they shouldn't be interested in Kenya's constitution. Rather, if they were unconcerned with Kenya's constitution, I'd call most pro-life advocates hypocrites.

Abortion isn't an issue like taxes, drugs, or any of the other bullshit we usually force on other nations. From a pro-life perspective, it's literally a matter of life or death. Any pro-life activist who believes that what happens in Kenya isn't any of his concern is betraying his principles. He's essentially saying that a Kenyan life is less than an American life.

Many, if not most of you, disagree with the pro-life advocate. Judging by the way Charles throws around the term 'anti-choice', he probably doubts that's even their true motivation. But from the pro-life point of view, its perfectly consistent. If the pro-abortion crowd was trying to influence the constitution, which they are BTW, I wouldn't say they're wrong either.

What I want to know is in a time when we can remotely control, restart and repair a robot on Mars, why can't we require technology that:

2. have real time updates to the terrorist watch list

Hey, I'm just asking questions!

That's really making me angry. From what I've read the airlines get an alert as soon as there is an update to the nofly list, but they need to check a site to see what the update is--who has been added. Previously they had a 24 hour window in which to check. Apparently the 'solution' proposed now is that they only have a two hour window.

This is just unacceptable to me. I realise that there are multiple threats all the time in different ways and finite time and resources, but really, isn't this something that HAS to have priority? With technology today, why isn't this virtually instantaneous? --addition to the nofly list and immediate knowledge for every airline about who is on it?

Additionally, given that they knew at this point who they were looking for, couldn't they have made an educated guess about where he'd most likely be flying to and prioritise certain destinations and airlines in the notification process, if necessary? He wasn't likely to be buying a ticket to go to DisneyWorld, after all.

BP Caps 1 Of 3 Leaks, But Oil Flow Won't Be Reduced
[Link: www.huffingtonpost.com...]

The Coast Guard says BP PLC has managed to cap one of three leaks at a deepwater oil well, but the work is not expected to reduce the overall flow of oil into the Gulf of Mexico.

Coast Guard Petty Officer 1st Class David Mosley says the work Tuesday night should reduce the number of leak points that need to be fixed on the ocean floor. BP officials have said that fewer leaks will make it easier to drop a containment box on the breach.

Unions.

How can anyone even think of adding to their power with a "card check" law? Who would dare to not check the card, knowing what sort of activism unions have at their disposal?

In a serious case of Get the fuck over it;

STRONG BREW

The term "tea-bagger" is like uttering the "n" word, some say. Though he aspires to promote civility, evidence has surfaced that President Obama has added "tea-bagger" to his public lexicon, though it's considered a cheap and tawdry insult by "tea party" activists. Watchdogs at Americans for Tax Reform (ATR) barked when they saw the proof, tucked in a sneak peak of Newsweek columnist Jonathan Alter's new book, "The Promise: President Obama, Year One," to be released May 18. Indeed, it appears the president joined certain partisan critics and the liberal media, and took the tea-bag plunge.

"This remark is the equivalent of using the 'n' word. It shows contempt for middle America, expressed knowingly, contemptuously, on purpose, and with a smirk. It is indefensible to use this word. The president knows what it means, and his people know what it means. The public thought we reached a new low of incivility during the Clinton administration. Well, the Obama administration has just outdone them," ATR president Grover Norquist tells Inside the Beltway.

Have a nice frosty mug of shut the fuck up and get over it.

Fetuses do flinch when pricked, startle at loud noises, and so on, once they reach a certain stage. Preemies likewise. There is little scientific room for doubt that fetuses in the age range matching preemies that exhibit sensitivity to pain also have the nerve connections and brain wiring to react to injuries in the same way that preemies do.

Laws banning abortion are in general a bad idea, but another bad idea is making believe the science is other than it is, because some part of that science, if accepted, might make a useful talking point for the other side.

George LaMonica, a 35-year-old computer consultant, said he bought his two-bedroom condominium in Norwalk, Conn., from Mr. Shahzad for $261,000 in May 2004. A few weeks after he moved in, Mr. LaMonica said, investigators from the national Joint Terrorism Task Force interviewed him, asking for details of the transaction and for information about Mr. Shahzad. It struck Mr. LaMonica as unusual, but he said detectives told him they were simply “checking everything out.”

That is not an actual explanation. I don't really care what the AP and Reuters do; how can you justify saying Charles throws around the phrase anti-choice, and then you, yourself, use the phrase 'pro-abortion'?

It seems very disingenuous.

Furthermore, aside from Catholics, the majority of people who are 'pro-life' are not, in fact, against the death penalty. Do you think that these evangelists are against the death penalty?

Finally, there appears to be very little action against or rhetoric against fertility clinics from anti-choice types, despite the fact that fertility clinics also destroy embryos, so I can't, in the end, even grant them the virtue of consistency.

For the third time in two years the state has found itself in a legal battle, defending an anti-abortion law.

SNIP

Henry is talking about two new abortion laws. One of them requires a woman to have an ultrasound and listen to a detailed description, just before getting an abortion. The other prohibits pregnant women from seeking damages if doctors withhold or provide inaccurate information about their pregnancies. The Governor vetoed both and the Legislature voted to override them.

A lawsuit was filed, challenging the ultrasound law, the day that happened.

SNIP

Over the past two years, the Attorney General's office has defended two anti-abortion laws, including a similar ultrasound law, and lost. The Assistant Attorney General spent time on the cases, instead of working on other things. Plus, the state paid $100,000 for an abortion law expert to help on the cases.

While the Legislature has not appropriated money for the expert's assistance on the new case, the Attorney General's office said high ranking staff in the House and Senate have expressed an interest in hiring her again, with a likely price cap of $100,000.

SNIP

Supreme Court justices said, just three months ago, "We are growing weary of admonishing the Legislature for so flagrantly violating the terms of the Oklahoma Constitution. It is a waste of time for the Legislature and the Court, and a waste of the taxpayer's money."

Interesting...so the T-Shirt vendor who notified police about the Times Square bomb wasn't the one who originally spotted it...it was another vendor, a muslim one at that, who noticed the truck...read on:

Aliou Niasse, a street vendor selling framed photographs of New York, said that he was the first to spot the car containing the bomb, which pulled up right in front of his cart on the corner of 45th street and Broadway next to the Marriott hotel.

“I didn’t see the car pull up or notice the driver because I was busy with customers. But when I looked up I saw that smoke appeared to be coming from the car. This would have been around 6.30pm.

“I thought I should call 911, but my English is not very good and I had no credit left on my phone, so I walked over to Lance, who has the T-shirt stall next to mine, and told him. He said we shouldn’t call 911. Immediately he alerted a police officer near by,” said Mr Niasse, who is originally from Senegal and who has been a vendor in Times Square for about eight years.

I wonder if the networks will give this guy credit for taking action?

Supreme Court Upholds Freedom Of Speech In Obscenity-Filled Ruling

In a decisive and vulgar 7-2 ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court once again upheld the constitution's First Amendment this week, calling the freedom of expression among the most "inalienable and important rights that a motherfucker can have."

"It is the opinion of this court that the right to speak without censorship or fear of intimidation is fundamental to a healthy democracy," Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote for the majority. "Furthermore, the court finds that the right to say whatever the hell you want, whenever the hell you want, is not only a founding tenet, but remains essential to the continued success of this nation."

Added Ginsburg, "In short, freedom of speech means the freedom of fucking speech, you ignorant cocksuckers."

I was just explaining the term "anti-choice" isn't exactly analogous to "pro-abortion". The better example, I think, would be "pro-death" or "anti-life", which I would never use certainly. Not to mention there ARE people who identify as pro-abortion. No one identifies with the term "anti-choice".

And maybe because I go to a Catholic university, but most pro-lifers I know also care strongly about the other issues I mentioned.

But this all distracts from my original point, which is that there was nothing wrong, or contradictory, about pro-life and pro-choice groups chiming in in Kenya, given how strongly they care about human life/ woman's rights.

"Left the rails" rather implies they were on the rails to begin with.

About four or five years ago I used to read Redstate all the time, without posting. They used to be just a bunch of hardline conservatives that hated liberals and cheered on Rush, and occasionally had interesting discussions between themselves about the nature of conservatism. They used to allow as many as three different flavours of hardcore conservatism sometimes, and on occasion they would even tolerate a liberal to post for a couple of weeks before feigning offense at something and banning him. Of course, back then they would have five times as many diaries as they do now, and hundreds more commenters.

Now? Nothing more than whacked-out Galtian fantasies about secret code-named superheroes fighting the shadowy forces of liberal commie socialism, interspersed with conspiracy theories and calls to war. It does however give me heart that their numbers have dwindled to so few. It gives me hope that this bizarre fringe cult that Conservatives have become is really a small and insignificant movement.

Taliban cut off hands of three Pakistan tribesmen: officials

The incident took place in the remote Ghaljo village of Orakzai, which is controlled by the Taliban.

"A Taliban court ordered the cutting off of the right hands of three local tribesmen in Orakzai tribal region after finding them guilty of theft," a police official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

He said that the three men were later taken to the north western town of Kohat for medical treatment.

Hospital official Musa Khan confirmed the incident and said that doctors were trying to save the three men's lives.

Orakzai is the latest district in northwest Pakistan's semi-autonomous tribal area to have witnessed an anti-Taliban operation by the military, following US pressure to eradicate Islamist extremism.

Washington calls Pakistan's tribal belt the global headquarters of Al-Qaeda and the most dangerous region in the world. Islamist militants in the area are believed to be fuelling the nearly nine-year insurgency in Afghanistan.

San Antonio refinery on fire following explosion

An oil refinery just southeast of downtown San Antonio is on fire.

The fire started at the AGE Refinery on South Presa, following an explosion. Large black plumes of smoke can be seen spilling into the skies above San Antonio.

The plant is located near Mission San Juan on Military Dr. and Presa.

AGE Refining, Inc., is based out of San Antonio. They refine several specialized petroleum products, including jet fuel and diesel. The company was founded in 1991.

There is at least one burn victim, according to initial reports.

Our sister station, KENS 5, has a crew on the way.

I guess $2/gallon gas is off the table this summer.

Yes, your anecdotal evidence isn't really relevant. There are very large numbers of people who are anti-abortion, but pro-death penalty.

Well, of course there's something wrong with non-Kenyans trying to influence the Kenyan constitution in this manner. But furthermore, I already said I agreed with you that it was completely consistent for those people who do not believe in a woman's rights and who believe that a zygote is a person to ban abortion for women who have been raped, so I'm not sure why you're repeating that. I also pointed out that if they wanted to be truly consistent, they'd want to ban fertility clinics as well. That they don't I do believe shows an inconsistency in their worldview.

another point I would like to see made-- I hope this makes NYC lighten up on the street vendors. They ought to issue more permits, not fewer.

Street vendors, apart from a beat cop, are going to be the best equipped of all to implement "see something, say something." They work the same spot for up to 14 hours a day every day, they know better than anyone what 'normal' foot traffic and 'normal behaviour' looks like in their specific locale, and they're constantly monitoring everything going on around them (to spot potential customers AND to spot people who will rip them off by grabbing shit).
Seriously. Issue them more permits. Hell, freakin' deputize them.

Did US Army Spy Plane Snoop on Shahzad's Calls To Track Him Down?:

Investigators were able to track wannabe terrorist Faisal Shahzad through his anonymous, pre-paid cell phone — exactly how, they won’t say. But there was a tantalizing explanation posted — and then quickly yanked — from the website of WCBS TV. “In the end, it was secret Army intelligence planes that did him in. Armed with his cell phone number, they circled the skies over the New York area, intercepting a call to Emirates Airlines reservations, before scrambling to catch him at John F. Kennedy International Airport.”

Jeremy Scahill, relying on a source in U.S. Special Operations, says those planes were likely RC-12s, equipped with a Guardrail Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) system. The planes are designed to pluck all kinds of communications from the air. But from the ground, they could easily be mistaken for an executive aircraft. The RC-12 is based on the Hawker-Beechcraft King Air B200 suit-carrier. And while earlier versions of the aircraft were covered in odd-looking antennas, the latest aircraft are far less conspicuous.

Variants of the planes are at the center of “Project Liberty,” a crash project by the Air Force to send more airborne spies to Afghanistan. The first of an estimated 37 aircraft began flying there last December.

“It sucks up everything. We’ve got these things in Jalalabad [Afghanistan]. We routinely fly these things over Khandahar. When I say everything, I mean BlueTooth would be effected, even the wave length that PlayStation controllers are on. They suck up everything. That’s the point,” Scahill’s source tells him.

Bolded for emphasis.

But presumably these people aren't throwing their money into this because they think it will make no difference. They're willing to go halfway around the world and undermine the independence and sovereignty of a whole country just to avoid

a. a few women getting abortions before they die of lingering complications

b. the possibility that Kenya might someday get its act together and pass different abortion laws

My swing feels like an unfolded lawn chair..I'm slicing into the woods...I hit trees in the woods..I'm lifting my head...
And on the greens..My gawd..I can't putt any more...
The secret to putting is to putt to the ball within 3 foot of the hole..Then tap it in..( Don't go all Tiger on me )
I'm putting 20 feet past the pin walking behind the ball screaming..' Any time you want to stop bitch..Just stop!' I am so frustrated with golf..
At the turn I walked into the club house and ordered 2 shots of Crown...I played the back 9 a little better..more relaxed...

Well, a lot of the public faces of the anti-abortion groups tend to say that cases of rape and incest are different and abortion should be allowed in those cases. It's only relatively recently, I feel, that they've been being more consistent and wanting it banned in those cases as well. That's what I meant.

I have much less respect for folks who say that rape cases are different. I have never understood the reasoning behind it, although some people here have been kind enough to try to explain their thinking about it to me.

They still burn them, beat them senseless, throw them in a ditch, and then burn them.

Why not add Homosexuality to the existing witch racket? They can make even more money by pointing out the gays and burning them too, right?

I HATE GOLF!

Hi Hoops! Heh! I had to play a charity tournament last Friday after not swinging a club (or putting) for a year. Didn't have time to practice much with woods or irons, so concentrated on putting. I did the following (feel free to completely ignore me!):

1. Stood behind the ball and tried to read line/speed. Picked the best line I could see.
2. Walked up to the ball with the putter in my right hand only. Set the putter down behind the ball and lined it up with the line I'd chosen.
3. Put my left hand on the putter in my standard butter grip.
4. Looked just behind the putter blade - kept my eyes there.
5. Hit the putt, bringing the putter back as far as I thought it needed to go, then through to the same point at the end of the swing. Kept my eyes on the spot I'd picked in step 4 and just listened to hear the ball hit the cup. (That made sure my head stayed still.)

Worked for me. During the tournament I made a 36 footer and a 25 footer - along with most of the shorter putts and all the ones under three feet.

Heh. Like I said above - feel free to ignore everything I've written!

;-)

Fertile ground, very fertile ground with the extreme evangelical brand of Christianity they have there, "witch finders" (pastors) make money "casting out demons" and telling parents that their child is actually a witch. They still burn them, beat them senseless, throw them in a ditch, and then burn them.

Why not add Homosexuality to the existing witch racket? They can make even more money by pointing out the gays and burning them too, right?

*NSFW*Do not watch the video if you are sickened by people being burned alive by a crowd because they are "witches." *NSFW*

That is the most revolting thing I have ever seen, even after a year in Vietnam and 10 months in Iraq.

Barbarism like this is a big part of the reason I own guns. Don't delude yourselves that it can't happen here, either. Equally barbaric lynchings happened in this country within living memory and people like this are capable of anything when they have the mob and their dogma to hide behind.

Saudi-Funded Fox News Rejects Ad Arguing Against Middle East Oil Dependence

Last week, progressive veterans organization VoteVets.org released an ad arguing that “a clean energy climate plan would cut our dependence on foreign oil in half and cut oil profits for hostile nations.” The ad asserts that “every day, Iran gets $100 million richer selling oil around the world and peddling hate.”

While CNN and MSNBC have aired the ad, Fox News is refusing to do so. Politico reports Fox apparently found the ad “too confusing.” Watch the “confusing” ad:

re: #310 lawhawk

My "theory" to how the rest of the show plays out...

A theory… “The End.”

Some ruminations on the possible outcome of the whole series. The sideways timeline is an anomaly, it wasn’t meant to happen, but it did because of The Incident. It’s a “satisfying” timeline, certain people have what they want, others have the possibilities of obtaining what they want and the remaining characters are secure in what they already have. The most important aspect of the sideways timeline, our favorite characters are still alive.

The Island is a “harsh mistress,” and those who are chosen to “protect” it have to make decisions way beyond their own personal interests. Jack has been chosen, and before the very end, all of our beloved characters in the original timeline will be dead, sans Jack and the constant to the sideways timeline, Desmond.

Jack will have to make a decision, kill the MIB, become the new protector of The Island (protecting it for what purpose, we will find out), let the sideways timeline collapse and go “poof” out of existence, or continue, with all his “friends” still alive and well in an alternate reality. The biggest decision he will have to make is loosing his relationship with his son in the sideways timeline.

In a sense, I believe the ending will will be totally in Jack’s control… accept destiny or try to cheat fate in order to “save” his friends.

342 Shiplord Kirel  Wed, May 5, 2010 12:20:40pm

Osama bin Laden is in Washington, says Ahmadinejad

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Wednesday denied recent press reports that Osama bin Laden is in Tehran and insisted that the Al-Qaeda leader is, in fact, in the US capital of Washington.

"Rest assured that he's in Washington. I think there's a high chance he's there," the Iranian leader told ABC television in an interview.

Without backing up the claim, the Iranian leader said he had "heard" that bin Laden was in the US capital.

"Yes, I did. He's there. Because he was a previous partner of Mr. Bush," he said referring to former president George W. Bush.

"They were colleagues, in fact, in the old days. You know that. They were in the oil business together. They worked together. Mr. bin Laden never cooperated with Iran but he cooperated with Mr. Bush," Ahmadinejad said.

He added that, at any rate, US officials ought to know the extremist Islamic leaders whereabouts.

"The US government has invaded Afghanistan in order to arrest bin Laden. They probably know where bin Laden is. If they don't know he is, why did they invade? Could we know the intelligence?" he asked ABC.

"First they should have tried to find his location, then invade, those who did not know about his location first they invaded and then they tried to find out where he is, is that logical?"

Read about the orphanges where all the cast out and burned children who have survived are housed, how it is impossible to find them a home because they are "witches."

If religious fanaticism can make people burn their own children, pour acid on them, or attack them with machetes because they are "child witches" you have to wonder just what type of "Christianty" they are being taught.

The fact that they continue to give money and support to these people who absolutely pervert Christianity tells you exactly how much they care about the message of Christ.

Yeah, I must agree, I'm not one for drawing false equivalencies. The rhetoric and hypocrisy in the so-called Christian far right may be ugly and vicious, and the practice of so-called Christianity as it is in Africa may in some places be violent and murderous, but as far as mass oppression and murder in the name of religion goes, modern fundamentalist Islam can be objectively said to be worse. They may stem from the same misshapen root, but that doesn't make them equivalent.

Much as it is disingenuous to claim equivalency between the ugly rhetoric of today's Tea Party cultists and 'the left', there's no real equivalency here.

Me and a buddy were coming down one time when a clock radio went off in the other room, just playing static. We were both gripped in utter terror for a good five minutes until he asked "Do you hear it to?, then we giggled for about 10 minutes before shutting it off.

Lieutenant governor tied to GOP-paid expenses for Disney tours

The Florida Republican Party spent more than $9,500 on special Disney World tours for Lt. Gov. Jeff Kottkamp and others in the summer of 2008, according to credit card bills obtained by The Miami Herald and The St. Petersburg Times.

The outings were part of roughly $47,000 in expenses charged that year to the American Express card held by the former executive director of the state party, Jim Rimes, and tied to Kottkamp. Handwritten notes on the bills describe the amusement park costs as ``Lt. Gov. Disney trip.''

Kottkamp said he went to Disney with donors and their families. But party spokeswoman Katie Betta said Tuesday that the Disney charges were not associated with a fundraiser nor other official party business.

The party is undergoing an audit to uncover any wrongdoing by high-ranking legislators and staff who used the credit cards under former chairman Jim Greer.

``This is an example of the type of expense our forensic investigators are looking into to determine if additional documentation does exist that would confirm that the Disney expenses were in fact related to RPOF business,'' Betta said in an e-mail.

Terrifying.

To be fair, a lot of his non-answers are because he's under fire from the readers, and instead of persuading or providing factual counterargument, indulges in a little vitriol. Hard to blame him - we all know how the internet is.

My favourite money quotes:

'As soon as we vote out the Obama/Reid/Pelosi axis of fiscal evil, we will get our country back.'

Q. Do you know the difference between average and marginal tax rates? Could you answer a simple Econ 101 question regarding the impact of progressive taxation on the labour-leisure choice? A. 'No.'

'You (liberals) do not love this country. You are embarrassed by us.'

Well, that one's half right.

I LOLed at this quote:

Judson Phillips: Yes, and your heros, the liberal democrats of the 80's were spending like drunken democrats. I have problem with democrats and liberals being in control of the government. IT's sort of like leaving a convicted sex offender alone with children. It is a very bad idea.

re: #434 WindUpBird

Hee! I never had these experiences, having mostly hung out with nerds who tossed dice when I was a teenager :D

During the genesis of D&D, the big guy of dice games, toking up before, during and after was a requirement.

re: #441 WindUpBird

hahaha jesus

I got into trouble behind the wheel as a teen, but I was stone cold sober.

I was also driving a 1975 Firebird and going double the speed limit in a rural nowheresville crawling with speed traps :D

Silly man.

I mean driving a '75 Firebird. By that time they were all weight and no power.

I could push my '70 1/2 SS faster.

re: #458 WindUpBird

The best character on that show is their manager. That guy is ruthlessly efficient in all the best and worst ways.

He reminds me of Owen from Gargoyles.

In looks, yes. In temperament? Nah. In fact, the Dethklok manager would be more likely to kill Owen for muscling in on his bread and butter than working alongside him.

Seriously-- best character on Metalocalypse, hands down. That guy rules. The band are each funny in their own ways, but nothing compares to the suit behind them.

Except that it ends up that Owen had engineered the entire thing, and comes out on top in the end.

One's an immortal trickster, the other is a Badass Normal. Place your bets now...

And don't get me started on what happens if Commander Riker gets involved.

Eh, fair point. I still give the edge to the manager, just because I like Metalocalypse far more than I ever did Gargoyles. Heh.

Oh, I love Metalocalypse, but isn't the idea of MacBeth as an immortal, power-armored vigilante... metal?

It's pretty ironic that these same people from the religious right who claimed that a Kenyan has overthrown the U.S. Constitution, are ones trying overthrow Kenyan Constitution to fit their fundalmentalist agenda.
