Fox Refuses Climate Legislation Ad

Media • Views: 3,083

Here’s the advertisement Fox News refused to run, from a liberal group making the case that America’s dependence on foreign oil has national security implications. I’m pretty sure I’ve heard Fox News commentators make similar arguments, many times.

Fox officials said the ad was “too confusing,” but the point seems crystal clear to me. (As does Fox’s reason for rejecting it.)

it looks good at first glance... what's in the bill?

Fox fears the competition in mind-space, as it is called.

If people start to accept that AGW-mitigation ↔ alternative energy development ↔ greater economic security for the US.... well, then, Fox loses the ownership of the security-meme that is part of their schtick.

Sorry for doubleposting, but I really love how the add is perfectly targeted for FOX viewers, making claims about security and fears of Iran. Beautiful. A shame if didn't air.

Well, that's the problem right there. AGW science-denial is part of Fox's marketing strategy to a segment of the US populace. Asking Fox to now all of a sudden do true "Fair and Balanced" reporting on science means they would have to go against their own strategy.

17 KingKenrod  Wed, May 5, 2010 5:40:15pm

I love the ad. People need to see that there are more immediate benefits to energy legislation than just decreasing global warming.

By "confusing", I guess Fox is worried its viewers will be tricked into supporting a Democrat-sponsored climate change bill.

It's never going to happen. Fox News is popular because it gives it's viewers the news as they want to see it. If they suddenly started to promote climate change as real, it would alienate a large percentage of the viewers.

21 worknhard  Wed, May 5, 2010 5:42:21pm

I think there should be a law passed that Fox News should have to air all adds in favor of AWG or be fined for an enormous amount of money and or jail time for their executive's.

Suspect because it has had to compete with two bigger (on the national level) stories: The oil rig disaster, and the failed terrorist bombing.

23 Charles Johnson  Wed, May 5, 2010 5:43:13pm

I've been tossing something around all day - the Linkage feature is now just one small step away from being a diary system similar to the one at Daily Kos, but much cooler.

I think I'll make the link itself optional. It's weird that by eliminating the necessity for the original focus of the whole feature, it frees it up to be an open-ended blog/diary/whatever system.

All the other tools you need to post a diary entry are already there -- you can embed links (soon images too) and videos, and edit your posts when needed.

In fact, I may eliminate the "Link URL" field in the bookmarklet entirely, and just put the link into the description field, followed by any selected text as a blockquote.

You could start to change the angle gradually. Bring the coverage into line in time. The ratings might actually go up, and its not unconservative.

31 political lunatic  Wed, May 5, 2010 5:45:30pm

Like their audience would bother trying to understand the ad anyway. If they aired it, after the 30 second ad airs, they would have 2 straight hours of people screaming that global warming is a myth, drill baby drill, and that the oil spill in the Gulf was caused by librul elite environazis, and the ad gets thrown down the memory hole of the average Fox viewer. I see no reason why Fox should reject what is essentially free money.

OT

Come to think of it, I might have a use for the atomic bomb model I linked in the last string, as a present for a certain Mr. Richey, who was one of our neighbors in Colorado Springs when I was a kid there in the late 50s and early 60s.

Mr. Richey was an insurance salesman with a horse-face wife and two annoying kids a couple of years younger than I was. He was also a very pious fellow who disapproved of violence, the military, and toy guns. He especially disapproved of my brothers and me because our dad was in the Air Force and we were southerners. Possibly he was still seething over the death of his great-uncle at Chancellorsville or something.

There was a minor war scare at the time of the U-2 incident in 1960, and we were getting quite a bit of the "duck and cover" propaganda at school. I had walked home with the Richey kids and was leaving when Mr. Richey cornered me in his backyard and started screaming at me, "I don't my kids hearing any more of this shit about the goddamned atomic bomb! We're not in the goddamned military and we don't believe in that kind of shit! Keep that fucking shit to yourself and get the fuck out of here!"

Those were his exact words. I made a point of never forgetting them.

I was TEN YEARS OLD. I didn't know anything about atomic bombs other than the nonsense from school and I had certainly never mentioned them to his brats, who were morons anyway. I was so frightened and shocked, I ran home crying and I avoided his kids like the plague from then on. My dad was out of the country and I didn't mention it to my mom for fear of starting a row with the neighbors, something she was always warning me not to do.

Mr. Richey was only about 30 at the time, so it is entirely possible that he is still alive, probably kicking back smugly in his old age and enjoying his retirement. His daughter may be a retired pole dancer and his son might have died of a heroin overdose but he has the satisfaction of knowing that he managed to protect them from the military-industrial cooties.

That is where the precision replica A-bomb comes in. I would like to find Mr. Richey and tell him about my military career, show him my medals and insignia, and give him the model bomb as a present--------- liberally covered with vaseline and applied as a suppository.

Automatic updates get a little tricky because of sorting issues -- if you're sorting "up" or you're not on the first page, for example. Been thinking about it, though.

The USA has a 90-120 year supply of natural gas which currently costs 1/3 as much as crude oil to drive ($1.40 a gallon).

Oklahoma (natural gas capital) has a bill for a $7,000 tax credit for NatGas car purchases.

NatGas burns 20% cleaner than oil and 45% cleaner than coal.

You're talking about the network that gives the world Glenn Beck.

Fox News will never risk doing anything that would alienate their core audience. There are a limited number of viewers for cable news and they're already number one. If they started reporting news from the reality based universe they might lose that position.

Something to consider is that currently, nobody comments in links. The comments thread here is the community hub, as it were, and the community is what I suspect keeps many so addicted to this place. If some diaries, for want of a better term, start to become spinoff comment threads of their own, the community may seem more fragmented. It may grow, or it may seem disjoint and impersonal to some who like the centralised chatroom feel.

71 Charles Johnson  Wed, May 5, 2010 5:55:28pm

What I think has happened in the past on occasion is people have used their spinoff for a conversation thread on a particular topic, whereas here the main topic disappears after awhile. In that way, this could be a good thing, as more controversial topics may get pushed to a spin-off thread, and off the main thread where it's aggravating everybody except the 3 or 4 or 5 people involved.

That's why I'm going to make the link field go away, and let the entire post be contained in what's now called the "Description" field, with links, etc. in there.

Are you considering a Kos-style system where highly rated "diaries" are somehow highlighted on the main page? Maybe a section like the Top/Bottom comments, where we see a list of the titles of top-rated postings, and mousing over them brings up some teaser text.

We feel miles apart inside

Was it something I said or something I did
Did my words not come out right
Though I tried not to hurt you
Though I tried
But I guess that's why they say

Every Lizard has his blog
Just like every night has it's dawn
Just like every cowboy sings his sad, sad song
Every Lizard has it's blog

Yeah it does

I listen to our favorite song
Playing on the radio
Hear the DJ say love's a game of easy come and
Easy go
But I wonder does he know
Has he ever felt like this
And I know that you'd be here right now
If I could have let you know somehow
I guess

Every Lizard has his blog
Just like every night has it's dawn
Just like every cowboy sings his sad, sad song
Every lizard has his blog

All right! The Lizard Collection's copy of X-Men #1 came back from the CGC and it got a rating of 2.5, almost exactly what I predicted. The cover was pretty beat up, and even had a couple of small pieces missing. But the CGC also annotated it as "WHITE pages," which is pretty rare for early Silver Age comics.

Still valuable, even with that relatively low rating, because there aren't many copies in better condition and the white pages add to it considerably.

Here's a quick photo:

Analogy: America's dependence on oil is like a smoker's dependence on nicotine. If the smoker has a few cases in the basement but the basement is boarded up, and the smoker is running low on cash for cigs, there are two choices: chop baby chop, or quit.

Both will alleviate the cash flow shortage. Only one is a long term solution. Drilling will in fact lessen our dependence on foreign oil, for a time.

If quitting cold turkey is too painful, we just might manage our addiction by building a slew of wind, solar, and nuclear installations while running through what's left of our domestic reserves of oil. In that context, drilling could be part of the answer. But only if we let the contracts for those other things before we open the drilling leases. The smoker has to commit himself beyond easy retreat in order to stand a chance.

The loquats I've been eyeing/eating have a couple of weeks of good harvest time. However, the past few days have been so sunny, and slightly warmer, I think the season will soon end.

re: #191 Killgore Trout

I love loquats. My local Asian market carries them, I don't think they'll grow around here.

Take consolation in that most of the varieties of apples and pears, which are related to loquats (all are part of the rose family), can't bear fruit down here because it doesn't get cold enough. There are some varieties that are grown in San Diego, but they've never impressed me. There are varieties of loquats that can tolerate freezes, I thought. Perhaps you might be surprised and find one that will work in Portland.

re: #202 lostlakehiker

Great post. You stated the case brilliantly.

re: #222 Killgore Trout

Love figs. Fresh figs in Japan are wonderful, unlike what we have here in California.

As for loquats, according to the Purdue hort folks:

The loquat is adapted to a subtropical to mild-temperate climate. In China it grows naturally at altitudes between 3,000 and 7,000 ft (914-2,100 m). In India, it grows at all levels up to 5, 000 ft (1,500 m). In Guatemala, the tree thrives and fruits well at elevations between 3,000 and 6,900 ft (900-1,200 m), but bears little or not at all at lower levels.

Well-established trees can tolerate a drop in temperature to 12º F (-11.11º C). In Japan, the killing temperature for the flower bud is 19.4º F (7º C); for the mature flower, 26.6º F (-3º C). At 25º F (-3.89º C), the seed is killed, causing the fruit to fall.

Loquats are grown on hillsides in Japan to have the benefit of good air flow. Extreme summer heat is detrimental to the crop, and dry, hot winds cause leaf scorch. Where the climate is too cool or excessively warm and moist, the tree is grown as an ornamental but will not bear fruit.

re: #23 Charles

The LGF Diaries.

I like that you can comment on links and spur discussions...I think it's a great idea. As far as the use of 'diaries' is concerned, I was put off by that term when I first started posting at dKos, but I do think it's an appropriate term...But if I had my preference, I'd use 'essays', and for the following reasons:
1. 'essay' connotes an organized discussion of a given topic, and raises the bar of expectation.
2. 'diary' connotes a personal journal...Little Green Journal Entries, if you will. It doesn't offer the same onus on the author to put together a reasoned argument...in fact, journal does a better job of that.
3. I'm funny that way, I guess. Okay, I really don't have a #3 off the top of my head, but as this is a comment and not a diary or journal and definitely not an essay, I suppose that's allowed. :)

But I do like the direction you're headed in, Charles. One thing I've wanted to have is a place where I can read more substantial posts by some of the people who contribute here, and I look forward to calling them 'writers.'

Cheers.

Fox has a stated goal (they're the FreeRepublic/RedState of the mainstream media). There's no 'justification' in their rejection of the ad, except that it goes against their principles of supporting Sarah Barracougar and "drill baby, drill"...

249 Gus  Wed, May 5, 2010 6:44:59pm

Right, confusing. Confusing to no one other than the Fox News viewers and simply to maintain the Fox News brand.

Meanwhile Fox is promoting several "green" campaigns including "Fox Green It. Mean It" campaign with rhetoric such as "Fox Broadcasting wants to partner with you to help take simple steps that will help deliver a better planet to the next generation." Including other "initiative" such as: NewsCorp GEI NewsCorp and FOX lead the green revolution with the Global Energy Initiative; FOX Green Guide Entertainment vendor guide and best practices for TV, Film, Events and Sports Production; and Environmental Capital The Wall Street Journal keeps tabs on the business of the environment.

Then you have the announcement of "0 by 2010" which includes: Dow Jones Announces Plans for 4.1 MW Solar-Power Installation;Avatar to Partner with Earth Day Network to Plant A Million Trees; and Avatar Wins Best Green Film from TreeHugger. There's nothing like playing both sides of the fence. Fox News generally pretends to be one thing by spreading anti-AGW news and generally anti environmentalist talking heads while the rest of the Fox organization does the other and all the while the devout Fox News viewers are clueless to this or refuse to acknowledge this fact.

Oh, and if you go here, FOX Broadcasting Company: Green It. Mean it, you will find a link to Green for All which has this page, Tell President Obama and Senator Reid: No New Offshore Drilling, Pass a Strong Climate & Energy Bill!

Fox News, the leader in corporate bullshit artistry.

Yes, if the conservative isn't just trolling for grins and giggles. There are a few regular posters there who are conservative, and they engage in healthy debate (despite getting flamed by some of the more intolerant liberals--yes, some liberals have a lack of tolerance). But the site is dedicated to helping elect more and better Democrats, so someone shilling for Sarah Palin isn't going to last very long.

Just asking, not snark. Does Kos allow conservatives?

I've seen dissenters get flamed pretty hard there, but Dkos is straight up about their mission. They don't claim to be bipartisan.

I looked at the same thing... at first you see the obvious, the fine print is the support of a bill... what is in the bill? I think it a fair question.

Well, the contents of the bill are pretty impossible to squeeze in a 30 second ad.

And a reduction in oil consumption in the U.S. would indirectly, in fact, hurt Iran by driving prices down.

But, as long as you're doing the ad? Why not throw in every unsympathetic international figure that has something to do with oil? Ahmadinejad! Chavez! Putin! Stephen Harper! Er...

The Daily Planet!! It will be Super!!

In the early 90s, LGF might have been a BBS (probably running RemoteAccess with FrontDoor as a mailer).

It would have been called "The Crepuscular Clutch", and nobody would ever have the slightest clue what the name meant, except for the handful of herpetologists who stumbled upon it.

true. But the rec list is a fickle beast. It's hard for a lot of people to make it there...I've only been on it three or four times (and once was my wedding pictures diary).

That doesn't change the fact that Sarah Palin is a natural disaster with lipstick. The best thing she ever did for Alaska was quit.

I don't think there's such a thing as buying oil from Iran, Canada, or Venezuela. Once the stuff hits the world market it's bought.

There's that cabel of a cartel (OPEC) that attempts to set prices, sometimes successfully. But
I think most of our crude comes from Mexico and Canada. Don't hold me to that.

That's correct. OPEC sets a common price among member nations, but sales are bilateral.

But it's a relatively ineffective cartel nowadays, because major exporters (like Canada, Mexico and Russia) aren't members.

It might come out of the ground there, but when we buy at price-lifting volumes, the profit go up for every producer.

And if she hadn't been picked for VP, she'd just be another governor under investigation for fraud and abuse of power. Funny how that happens.

Though, to be fair, what she did as governor only got her in trouble because it was Alaska. Had it been a governor of Illinois or New Jersey, it would not have even been notable.

IMHO, Fox New's business model is genius.

Polling appears to indicate that between 10% and 25% of the US populace is typically hard, right-wing on any given issue [no matter how extreme].

The aforementioned segment of the US populace appears to be predisposed to want [even demand] a news source that speaks to their world view ... if that news source is "respected"; all the better.

If any news source secures the dogmatic viewership of even 5% of the US populace, their typical rolling audience is 15 million regular viewers ...

Take the leakers into account, and Fox should have the best ratings.

Which they do.

If one is surprised or derives some level of entitlement regarding one's views owing to the fact that Fox rules ... IMHO, you, sir or madam, are delusional.

"Fox news" is a carefully articulated set of meme's designed to drive ratings and profits.

Awesome as it may be from a capitalist perspective, IMHO, it is dangerous from a populist perspective; and very dangerous to a functional democracy.
