The Story Behind Twitter’s ‘Accept’ Bug

Technology • Views: 3,267

Gizmodo has the story behind the strange little episode that took place today on Twitter, in which an incredibly simple trick was discovered that allowed anyone to force anyone else to follow their accounts: The Real Story Behind Twitter’s Ridiculous Follow Bug.

It’s pretty surprising (to say the least) for a bug like this to have existed without anyone encountering it before, with millions of users hammering away at the system every day for years. In fact, it’s possible that others have stumbled across it but never even knew.

The bug was discovered by accident, by a Turkish Twitter user. Here’s what happened.

Our initial tip came to us through another Turkish Twitter user, named Gntekin. His first message to us, which frankly sounded ridiculous (Preemptive [sic]:

A Turkish guy named Bora Kırca figared out accidently that if you tweet “accept username”, for example billgates, then bill gates will follow you.

it’s so stupid; but true.

Stupid, but yeah, true. It worked. We posted about it. Twitter went nuts, everyone’s follow numbers shot to zero, and Bora’s Twitter account was suspended. But how did he find this thing in the first place? Accidentally? Really? Gntekin explains:

[Bora] likes a group named “Accept” and to show his love, he tweets “accept pwnz”; but instead of seeing this post, he sees twitter user “pwnz” follows him.

He told his girlfriend, and together they started doing exactly what anyone else would have: They made famous people follow them. Then he posted about it on his blog, here, in Turkish.

I am proud to say that I only use Twitter to know when Charles is starting a new thread and nothing else.

Thus I could care less about all of this beside the obvious lulz....

Sen. Leahy on the Kagan nomination:

"We have some Republicans who would automatically oppose anybody who was nominated," Leahy said. "The President could nominate Moses the Law Giver. In fact I told the President, I said you realize if you'd nominated Moses the Law Giver, somebody would raise, 'but he doesn't have a birth certificate! Where's his birth certificate!'"

Moses, of course, would be considered an 'activist judge' as the SCOTUS is supposed to interpret the law, not give it.

My computer is moving at molasses speed there--I'm still at school--so I'll add this--the brutality of both the French and Russian revolutions reflected the brutality of the society they turned upside down. Both cultures had a longstanding understanding that the people at top were allowed, nay expected, to kill as many people as needed to make it clear that God, Reason, Communism, whatever, upheld their reign and their right.

Thank God, thank God, thank God for the British legal tradition.

U.S. Special Forces Set to Carry XM-25 Laser-Guided Smart-Bullet Weapon into Battle

U.S. Army Special Forces soldiers will deploy with the XM-25 weapon this summer, so that they can shower enemies hidden inside buildings with lethal smart rounds. Veterans of the Afghanistan conflict who tried the weapon predicted it would be a "game changing" gun capable of taking out insurgents hidden behind cover, Military.com reports.

The XM-25 resembles a highly sophisticated grenade launcher that fires laser-guided smart rounds. The laser gauges a distance to target and allows the warfighter to set where the round will detonate, adding or subtracting increments of 3 meters from the laser-spotted point. Then the scope tells a microchip inside the round how far it should travel before exploding.

My great-grand father was a Commissionaire later in his life. Quasi-official government security guard I guess? They do security everywhere from university residences to hospitals to military bases. Anyways, we still have his mag-lite. From the size of it, I'm pretty sure it's either an aluminum baseball bat with a light-bulb taped to the end of it, or designed to signal the space station.

The "cold war heating up" is only part of the reason for such a thing. Russia and China aren't canceling their cutting edge tech aircraft programs, and they have this nasty habit of building tons of weapons and selling them to anyone and everyone. Nowdays the broad spectrum antibiotics are causing some problems with a condition called C.dif for short.... it's a stomach /digestive system infection that is usually caused by the antibiotic-wipeout syndrome. If you get really weak with bad tummy stuff, see your doc right away... it's a fungal thing that needs special meds to clean up. But if you load up with the yogurt or probiotic pills it usually doesn't hit.

Sigma-x is doing his shtick again on the last thread. Flounce level approaching critical.

I wrote a little poem for him.

Someone put some smegma
In the Twitter feed of Sigma.
Sigma sensed something was wrong
And gave us all a little song.

The song became an aria
In which a certain Bagua
Got blamed for x-ing Sigma's friends.
Sigma nearly got the bends.

When Sigma's story's water broke
And all could see it was a joke,
Sigma seethed and whined and spat,
Very like a clawless cat.

The moral of the story is,
When Sigma-x is taking hits
He devolves quickly into fits
While all the Lizards take the pizz.

Not that I haven't met some perfectly lovely and gentle pet pit bulls who live with nice people. But they are the exception here. It's very sad.

I read a great article about a woman who was teaching a deaf pit bull to respond to commands in sign language.

Apparently the dog was confiscated in a drug raid. The dealer's uncle came to pick up his nephew's stuff, but brought the puppy back because it was 'stupid'. He didn't realize it was deaf, just saw that it couldn't learn verbal commands. Apparently dogs don't lip read well.

Given that his nephew was the one dealing, you'd think he'd be careful about calling a perfectly nice disabled pit bull stupid.

A pit bull that roams the neighborhood almost certainly has no training or discipline and is a definite danger to the community.
These are alpha dogs that need firm owners who love and train them. If one is roaming, it is like a loaded gun.

Dogs, even the normal hearing variety, often respond better to visual commands anyway. With my dog Penny who recently passed I tried to always accompany any verbal commands with a hand gesture. It pays off over distances when I didn't have to yell, just a whistle and a hand gesture would usually get her to do what I wanted.

Of course the method has its limitations, she got skunked twice at night, and that kind of sucked.

I'm considering it.

Great. You should give Games of Thrones a try - if you don't like it, you can confidently put away the rest fantasy genre without wondering whether you're missing anything.

It reads very much like an historical novel, very light on silliness. Don't think LOTR - think Robert Greaves with multiple narrators.

Uh-oh...looks like Meg's millions aren't buying the nomination as easily as she thought they were...

As Early Voting in California Begins, Poizner Ups the Bid Against Whitman for GOP Governor Nomination: In a Republican primary for California Governor today, 05/10/10, 1 month until votes are counted, former eBay CEO Meg Whitman is losing ground to state Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner, according to SurveyUSA's latest tracking poll, conducted exclusively for KABC-TV Los Angeles, KPIX-TV San Francisco, KGTV-TV San Diego, and KFSN-TV Fresno. Whitman gets 39% today, Poizner 37%. Compared to an identical SurveyUSA poll released 18 days ago, Poizner is up 10 points; Whitman is down 10 points. 6 other candidates on the ballot remain in single digits. Among men, Whitman had led by 23 points, now trails by 4, a swing of 27 points to Poizner. Among voters age 18 to 49, Whitman had led by 19, now trails by 8, a swing of 27 points to Poizner. Poizner leads by double digits in the Central Valley; Whitman leads by double digits in the Bay Area, Northern Coast, and Inland Empire. The contest is volatile: additional swings are possible.

Could it be Meg's resemblance to this lovely lady?

Pit bulls are one of the most awesome, incredibly affectionate, loyal, tough and tenacious breeds imaginable. I know other breeds of dogs are great too, but I don't know another one that can get shot three times, still fend off an attack on family, and live.
