John McCain’s latest campaign advertisement is one such video.

Static obstacles don’t work, except for the people who contract to build obstacles.
If we choose to use physical force along a 2000 mile border it will have to be mobile, mostly aviation. That means someone would have to be willing to shoot up families. We will find another answer.

One reason the fence is not really a good answer:
By making it possible for American farmers to sell their crops abroad for considerably less than it costs to grow them, USDA subsidies help determine the price of corn in Mexico and whether farmers in that country are forced off the land, to migrate to the cities—or to the United States. The problem is exacerbated by the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which eliminated the barriers to U.S. agricultural imports that had protected Mexican farmers.[Link: www.thesocialcontract.com…]

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) on the need to build a fence on the U.S.-Mexico border, January 2007:
I think the fence is least effective. But I’ll build the goddamned fence if they want it.
McCain again in September 2008:
What my plan was, and what our proposal was, that we secure our borders, and we can secure it, not necessarily with walls and fences. Although that is important in populated areas, in the deserts of Arizona vehicle barriers, cameras, and sensors, all of those things, can be used.

As far as tornadoes go, it will be interesting to watch the change over the decades. If the Hadley cells enlarge and move northward, and thus the jet streams move northward, the lower plains might see a decrease in tornadoes, while the upper plains might see an increase.
It’s an area of speculation, and I’ve not seen any definitive work on how US tornado distribution will change.

That’s not true. McCain was a party animal. He graduated at the bottom of his Academy class. He revels in his SNL performances. Blithering nonsense.
That bring me to another thing that bothers me: No one who earned the rank of Captain in the United States Navy should even allow himself to be associated with the phrase “the plan is perfect”. He literally can’t believe that, given all that he has seen, done and read.

As far as tornadoes go, it will be interesting to watch the change over the decades. If the Hadley cells enlarge and move northward, and thus the jet streams move northward, the lower plains might see a decrease in tornadoes, while the upper plains might see an increase.

OK, so the census people call me (I have caller ID & it was them) & tell me there has been a mistake and my paycheck is being deposited into another employees account… the problem is I am not working for the census. It seems that I am on their data base as an employee & turning in a time sheet for 40 hours a week… odd is that?
OK, so I call the cops… the Social Security, the FTC, the IRS, the State Dept. of Labor, the DA & the DOJ … funny not one agency can tell me in real time if income is being declared against my ss#… so someone in the census in a position high enough to approve time sheets is collecting a check in my name & the only people that notice are the folks at unemployment … does it seem strange that I want to report a case of fraud & 5 government agencies don’t want to take the complaint? wtf?
dude, i posted this earlier this year, but i got a second set of tax refund checks from 2005 and 2006 in January because the IRS literally lost all record of my having submitted my returns for those years. i spent nearly two years trying to get them to understand that they’d already processed those returns but i didn’t have my copies anymore…so you paid me double.
there are plenty of good folks who work for the govt but it’s not how you’d ever want to run a productive enterprise. the IRS has systems that can’t even interface with each other, for crying out loud. i almost wept in their office when i learned that…

Another neat image, from a different shooter (Verne Carlson) of the same tornado, that shows the multi-vortex nature of these large tornadoes well:
So let’s see if I can get this back on topic…
To me, the Tea Party movement is like a large wedge tornado, made up of multiple vortices all revolving around each other. One vortex is the Fed conspiracy mindset (BUY GOLD!!), another vortex is the creationist/anti-science whirlwind, and yet another is the cultural-racism vortex, not to be confused with the genetic-racism vortex that is part of the same mix. Then there is the Libertarian Fundamentalism vortex. And so on.
All combined into one large wedge tornado that is leaving a path of destruction through the GOP and the American body politic.

re: #146 austin_blue
My buddy Bruce Sterling posited in a novel (Heavy Weather) that if if surface temperatures increase enough in the spring to say, 103 degrees, that a late low pressure system, combined with a high stuck south of the Texas/Louisiana border could pump enough moisture into the core of the low system to form a 50-mile wide F-6 tornado with 300-MPH winds. Interesting thought experiment. Not a bad book.
i thought that storm intensity generally correlated with temperature differential between the equator and the poles rather than average surface temperatures per se?

Don’t get too excited about the Mullah Omar news from Brietbart. He’s spinning it as an” Obama’s clueless and Hillary’s stupid” thing. Probably not true bu we’ll see.
That would be his meme whether the story was true or false. Brack Obama could lead a raid himself that captured the entire leadership of a drug cartel and Andrew Breibart would claim he “got in the way”. If he even had to admit an unqualified success by Obama, his head would explode.

Oh more extreme events are a given… As to where they will be, it is hard to model. Free is right that there is a good chance of these weather systems moving north for the reasons he mentioned. I’m just not willing to say it strongly yet.
Agreed, but they will be moving north with the spring and south with autumn. More extreme events, on average, in both directions. Take a look at the Central Tennessee rainfall totals last weekend.

I know a guy whose dad runs the single largest poinsettia growing operation in the US, outside of Tyler, Texas. Keep in mind that Tyler is so conservative that only airplanes with two right wings are allowed to land at the airport.
This is a March to November operation, at which time all the (illegal) workers head south with a 3 1/2-month hiatus in their work schedules (which no American would tolerate) and enough money to keep their families happy and fed.
Just sayin’.

Just put a code (based on DNA/fingerprint/retinal-print data) on an RFID chip, slip it under my skin, and be done with it. Bank, store, SS office… wherever, I can then just be me and not an assortment of accounts with never ending combinations of digits.

LOL. Evening Lizards.
Just watching my comedy pet show. We have a big box of dog treats that sits on a shelf. The dogs know that when they come in from their last pee before bed they get a treat and automatically go and sit by the box. Tonight two of my cats jumped onto the shelf as well and one starts pawing the box. The dogs were sitting patiently watching as the cat slowly started pushing the box towards the edge. The other cat jumps dog and starts running figure eights in between the dogs.
They in cahoots now!

My ID card (Don’t have a DL because of seizures) has a magnetic stripe on the back that I have never used and I’ve never seen anyone else use, either. Activate that strip and there’s your national ID card.

Right. An ID card or driver’s license. All the info is on there that anyone would need other than where you were born and despite the immigration debate, I don’t see how that information is relative. If you’re a legal resident or alien, you have a green card or visa.

Why is the purchase of gold touted by ads on conservative radio stations? I mean, if there isn’t enough gold to go around anyway, what’s the point? And how much gold could one really buy and exchange for simple things like gallons of fuel and groceries? Do people not think of such things?

Gold (any commodity) has a built in ceiling. The gold bugs want to convince you that it will just keep going up, up, UP! But there comes a point where you just can’t afford it - and then it is worthless. Person A can’t buy it; Person B can’t sell it. And then the price naturally drops.

There are two large gold dealers who started, years ago, to significantly support talk radio and the “alternative” right personalities. They’ve been at it for decades. Clear Channel is one of their projects, for instance (not to say CC was purely based on the dealers, but they played an important role in being key advertisers and were pushed hard by Art Bell in his earlier days, when he kept Premier afloat and helped CC become the dominant player that it is.)
The fixation on gold is very old, and can be traced throughout the long history of the nut-o-sphere. Alex Jones et. al. just recycle the earlier paranoia that was the domain of the JBS and similar groups.
You can go all the way back to the “Free Silver” era to find the gold aficionados doing their thing.

Oh, I agree. I carry a rfid I.D. that allows me to unlock certain doors at my place of employment. But it is limited to a basic account number. If it was more than that I would probably be adverse to having it on my person. But to intentionally damage a government issued document is foolish. It at the least renders it useless and at worst leaves you open to charges of destruction of Government property. You don’t own that passport/I.D. card. The State does and they can (and if it becomes widespread) probably will, charge those who knowingly damage the rfid device with destruction/alteration of a Government document.

Let me remind you of something you may not have heard… not every single little mystery of the show is going to be explained before the finale.
The producers have stated over and over, some things are just the “world” of the show, you will have enough info to infer some answers that are not directly answered, and some thing will be outright answered, but all in all, some aspect of the show just are.
Like the Numbers. There is no further explanation of the numbers. It is fate that they keep showing up, but there is no real motive behind them reappearing over and over.

That bring me to another thing that bothers me: No one who earned the rank of Captain in the United States Navy should even allow himself to be associated with the phrase “the plan is perfect”. He literally can’t believe that, given all that he has seen, done and read.
He doesn’t care. I mean, on some level he cares, but this is not about how to stop illegal immigration. It’s about John McCain winning reelection.

Four ducks are arrested and go before the judge. Judge calls the first one up.
Judge: “What are you charged with?” Duck: “Blowing bubbles in the pond”
Next duck.. “What are you charged with?” “Blowing bubbles in the pond”
Third duck.. “What are you charged with?” “Blowing bubbles in the pond”
Fourth duck walks up.. “What are you charged with?” “Sir, I am Bubbles”

Let me go to the one state where building the fence could be associated with bigotry and racism.Sure, I could go to Texas, or New Mexico, or California; but those states are not being painted as batshit crazy. No, I’ll go to ARI-fucking-ZONA!
The One, Single, and Only state, where support for building the fence is an absolute, sure signal to every racist, bigoted, nutso separatist, xenophobic asshole. that I understand and support their psychosis!I’m John McCain, and I pander to racists.
/We need the fence, but not at this price.
Build the friggin’ fence, but do it honestly. I support tag and release immigration.
Let ‘em in. Let ‘em work. Keep track of who and how many. And don’t force them to work illegally so they work for less. Play the game honestly.

See?
Yes, I do. I read an article in which it was said that the ending will lead to many new questions, and fertile ground for the fans to come up with varying theories.
Even were they to attempt an explain it all ending, there doesn’t seem enough time left to do so. The alternative would require a deus ex machina.
I reckon some sort of extra-terrestrial connection is likely at this point.

You’re close. It was Field Marshal von Moltke the Elder who said that. He was head of Prussia’s army during the Franco Prussian War and clashed with Bismarck over the conduct of the Siege of Paris at times. Bismarck won out at length, but the idea of the primacy of the military had been planted in Germany and it would bear bitter fruit in WWI.

Hayek did write well and I have defended him before, so i’m sorry if I did not do so this time. The thing is that the Paulian crowd seems to have appropriated the “Austrian School” label, thus making it crazy. The Bad Craziness infects any institution it is allowed a foothold in.

No. You really won’t be able to stem the tide enough without resorting to tactics that would be unAmerican. And we’d need a much less random immigration law, I think, as well. The current system gives immigrants very, very poor odds.
I favor a program of working for citizenship, either in the army or in a needed service profession. I think there are lots and lots of immigrants of exactly the kind that would best fit into the fabric of America who would love to go after those opportunities.
And we need an expanded worker program as well, because we really do depend on that migrant labor. To me there’s nothing more foolish than a government trying to outlaw a market force. We can either accept the rise in the price of our food that would come from both hiring only those legally able to work but also the cost of the companies policing their employees that thoroughly.
I think we’d rather— and it’d be better for our economy— to expand a worker program and legitimize what is already a fact of life. Then improve things for the workers, and turn them into a new goddamn Mexican middle class, and send them back into Mexico to shape that country into a grand new spanking uncorrupt Mexico! Viva Mexico! Andalé!

Presumably the manager of the building will at least be able to tell you how many people live in the unit. But if they’re not on site, I guess that doesn’t help.

Let me just say that my doubts about ‘sealing the border’ have long been on record on this site, and I’ve seen a lot of ‘get tough’ ideas rise and fall.
the border will never be ‘sealed’…it will never even be monitored to any degree of security….it has become a liberal dumping ground for accusing intolerance, bigotry and even racism…the cartels know this and will use our neglect to their advantage…it’s all our fault, we are such self a centered culture

I actually got the number of the apartment manager today by randomly knocking on doors. That’ll take care of two units, at least. I’ve got to say that I don’t see what the big fricken deal it is to fill out the census form. I’m already half inclined to just prefer that the Feds begin penalizing people who refuse to partake in the Census. While I appreciate the work, I don’t appreciate the people who get pissy with me. Anyway, it’s not like I expect much from people these days anyway.

This should feed the conspiracy folk:
Soros approves RI proposal to form climate agency
UN climate adviser George Soros has agreed to a proposal made by Indonesia to establish a local agency that would manage international support for the country’s efforts to tackle climate change.
The agency would be headed by senior government official Kuntoro Mangkusubroto, Indonesia’s Forestry Minister Zulkifli Hasan said after a meeting between Soros and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the Presidential Office in Jakarta on Monday.
“The agency will manage local and international funds and monitor, report on and verify agreed projects,” Zulkifli said.In a press conference, Soros said Indonesia was justified in receiving international grants and loans in return for protecting its forests and peat land.

Nonetheless, the Austrian School of economics really, really is a very fringe school of economics that does not enjoy a very good reputation. Moreover, I think that it has a fundamental mistake, in that it doesn’t realize that any market is by nature evolutionary; that over time the most efficient market strategies will not necessarily be ones that actually produce anything of value. Any economy of sufficient complexity can, and will, be gamed— largely by the manipulation of information. Austrian economics can only make sense if people actually have a coherent knowledge of the economy, but it is it in the economic best interests of anyone selling anything in the market that consumers know as little as possible about the state of the market.
It has other fundamental flaws, too. But that’s one of its most famous.

In the early hours of Sunday 9 May, the Islamic authorities in Iran executed Farzad Kamangar and four other political prisoners. Farzad Kamangar was a teacher and a human rights activist, whose release had been the object of high profile campaigns in Iran and internationally over the past two years. The other four political activists who were executed on Sunday in Evin Prison were Ali Heydarian, Farhad Vakili, Shirin Alam-Houli and Mehdi Eslamian. All five had been sentenced to death for their political opposition to the regime. The sentences were carried out in secret, without their families or lawyers being informed.

Oy. I used to get into long, involved discussions with people who were von Mises disciples. They’d constantly natter on about praxeology and about how unless I could quote from Human Action chapter and verse, I was utterly clueless about economics and I would never understand anything about the market or about how money worked.
No surprise— they were also anarcho-capitalists that believed in privatizing everything (including the police, the courts, and all emergency services!), they reviled Lincoln as TEH WORST PREZNIT EVAR OMG and were followers of Luap Nor.
After a while, it got tedious talking to them, so I just resorted to open mockery instead.

Switching gears, but Ah-nuld got in a joke at Arizona’s expense today:
Schwarzenegger makes Arizona joke at commencement
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger joked that he was afraid of being deported in Arizona during a commencement speech he delivered Monday at Emory University in Atlanta.
Schwarzenegger’s office provided a copy of his prepared remarks and confirmed he made the Arizona joke.
“I was also going to give a graduation speech in Arizona this weekend,” Schwarzenegger said. “But with my accent I was afraid they would try to deport me.”
The Republican governor is opposed to Arizona’s new immigration law and said last month, “I would never do that in California.” Schwarzenegger has blamed the federal government for not securing the border.

Some days the jealousy was more than Sam H. Kent could handle. Every time Sam caught a glimpse of Barack H. Obama on his TV screen, he could see in his mind’s eye the gangly 9-year-old boy with the dazzling smile in the encampment outside Mombasa. Once Sam’s life was guided by the final words from the Guardians as all the boys (each with the middle initial “H”) were put on that big jet for America: “We will guide your way. You will rule the world — if you obey. Defy us — and you will decay.”
Okay, now it all sounds like a bad science-fiction movie. But the Guardians did keep up their end of the deal … for a while. There was a new family, Ma and Pa Kent. A girl friend named Lois. At the University of Iowa, Sam kept finding the answers to his exams in the freezer … the night before the tests were given. Ma and Pa Kent’s tragic car accident left him enough money to buy the Chrysler dealership as a springboard to politics. And a big-name political consultant from Chicago suddenly arrived to run his 1996 campaign for the Iowa state senate.

I believe it’s in part due to the appeal of some libertarian proposals in the post-9/11 world. No more wars, a return to balanced budgets, rejection of the Patriot Act; this stuff sounds very good to a lot of people. It’s naturally popular.

I am squishy on this issue, at least concerning Mexican Citizens already in the USA. I work and live with the Mr. & Mrs. Gonzalezes, Martinezes and Lopezes.
To an extent, I agree with former Mexican President Fox that there “is NO Border” which actually means that “There IS NO Mexico” - Only a North American Tri-Lingual Community - English, Spanish, French - in that order.
I can accept that, if/when the arrangements are made. The “Arrangements” are still in flux. SO - a “Modest Proposal” - Visas of one sort or another for Mexican Citizens in the USA - AND CANADA!
