Breaking from the UK:
Ex-minister Stephen Timms stabbed at constituency event
Former Labour minister Stephen Timms is in hospital after being stabbed.Police said Mr Timms, 54, was stabbed in the stomach at a constituency event in Newham, east London, but stressed his injuries were not life-threatening.
A 21-year old woman has been arrested after the attack at about 1500 BST but police have not given further details about what happened.
Mr Timms served at the Treasury under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown and was recently re-elected as MP for East Ham.
The MP is reported to be sitting up in Royal London Hospital and talking to staff.
I can't find any info on the woman who stabbed him.

Palin: 'Mama grizzlies' will take back US
Palin challenged Republican women — "mama grizzlies," she called them — to help the GOP "take this country back" and elect anti-abortion lawmakers. She praised female leaders of the tea party movement and invoked her 2008 acceptance speech where she compared herself to a pit bull.
"You don't want to mess with moms who are rising up," Palin said. "If you thought pit bulls were tough, you don't want to mess with mama grizzlies."
Palin also criticized the media, singling out their coverage of her daughter Bristol, whose pregnancy was announced days after Palin was named the vice presidential nominee. Bristol Palin is a single mother who works on an abstinence-only campaign.

She said some young women would see what happened to Bristol and perhaps be encouraged to seek an abortion instead of facing similar criticism.

That puts Republicans in a strange position: unable to say the legislation failed, but at pains to distance themselves from their vote nonetheless. Over the past couple days, I've asked a number of GOP senators whether, nearly two years later, they think the bailout bill was effective. Their answers were revealing.
Sen. Judd Gregg (R-NH), who's retiring at the end of the year and is therefore unencumbered by the need to defend himself from the GOP base, has nothing to run away from.
"It was extremely effective," Gregg told me. "Not only was it effective and stabilized the financial industry, it also returned to the taxpayers almost $20 billion in interest and dividends that they would have otherwise not have."

FBI files discuss Cronkite aiding Vietnam protesters
Legendary CBS News anchor Walter Cronkite allegedly collaborated with anti-Vietnam War activists in the 1960s, going so far as to offer advice on how to raise the public profile of protests and even pledging CBS News resources to help pull off events, according to FBI documents obtained by Yahoo! News.
The documents, obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, say that in November 1969, Cronkite encouraged students at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla., to invite Maine Sen. Edmund Muskie to address a protest they were planning near Cape Kennedy (now known as Cape Canaveral). Cronkite told the group's leader that Muskie would be nearby for a fundraiser on the day of the protest, and said that "CBS would rent [a] helicopter to take Muskie to and from site of rally," according to the documents.
The claims are contained in an FBI memo recounting a confidential informant's report on a November 1969 meeting of a Rollins College protest group called Youth for New America. The group was planning rallies near Cape Kennedy on Nov. 13 and 14 — the latter being day of the Apollo 12 launch from Cape Kennedy, which President Nixon would be attending — as part of a nationwide Moratorium to End the War in Vietnam. That protest action culminated in a huge march on Washington on Nov. 15.

DF, that's not true. There's an Alaska blog that analyzed the whole thingy. Very detailed, researched and documented.

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration’s decision to authorize the killing by the Central Intelligence Agency of a terrorism suspect who is an American citizen has set off a debate over the legal and political limits of drone missile strikes, a mainstay of the campaign against terrorism.
The notion that the government can, in effect, execute one of its own citizens far from a combat zone, with no judicial process and based on secret intelligence, makes some legal authorities deeply uneasy.
To eavesdrop on the terrorism suspect who was added to the target list, the American-born radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who is hiding in Yemen, intelligence agencies would have to get a court warrant. But designating him for death, as C.I.A. officials did early this year with the National Security Council’s approval, required no judicial review.
“Congress has protected Awlaki’s cellphone calls,” said Vicki Divoll, a former C.I.A. lawyer who now teaches at the United States Naval Academy. “But it has not provided any protections for his life. That makes no sense.”
Administration officials take the view that no legal or constitutional rights can protect Mr. Awlaki, a charismatic preacher who has said it is a religious duty to attack the United States and who the C.I.A. believes is actively plotting violence. The attempted bombing of Times Square on May 1 is the latest of more than a dozen terrorist plots in the West that investigators believe were inspired in part by Mr. Awlaki’s rhetoric.
“American citizenship doesn’t give you carte blanche to wage war against your own country,” said a counterterrorism official who discussed the classified program on condition of anonymity. “If you cast your lot with its enemies, you may well share their fate.”

Wall Street bigs snubbed President Obama last night at a big-bucks campaign fund-raiser at The St. Regis hotel in Midtown.The gala -- where tickets went for as much as $50,000 a couple and whose proceeds were going to Democratic candidates -- featured stars such as Sarah Jessica Parker and Democratic Party regulars but few, if any, executives from the city's leading financial institutions.
That was no accident, according to Democrats on Capitol Hill and Wall Street sources who say those in the financial industry are tired of being the punching bag for Obama and Democrats crafting legislation to tightly regulate them.
"They may support individuals, but not the party," one House Democratic lawmaker said.
"I think there's been some pushback from the [financial] community."
Other Democrats said that, indeed, Wall Street money has dried up for the party, and an official from one of the major investment firms confirmed that its people were staying away from The St. Regis.
"We won't be attending," the official said.
While the event drew executives from a number of private-equity firms, leaders from big outfits like Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, Deutsche Bank and JP Morgan were nowhere to be found.

Very poignant are the remarks where the narrator says that he counted 30 ships on ground zero and that they were cleaning the oil as if they were using tea cups (which in effect is quite a good anology.)

Whatever influence we might have played in that, bailing out Greece was probably a good idea. If a Euro nation defaults, it's going to bring down the Eurozone, which is going to have very, very bad effects on the EU.
I'm not sure that the Eurozone is a good idea, but removal through collapse is definitely not the way to end it. Not unless we want to have to worry about an extremely destabilized ally.

Though there was a protest by a bunch of far-left goons in front of the Greek consulate in Chicago yesterday. They were actually the supporting the arsonists who torched that bank and killed three people. Utterly insane. I took a picture and I'll try to upload it today.

That snow fell last night. We have a short growing season up here in the Rocky Mountains. It's nice when in the middle of summer, it's 15-20 degreed (f) cooler than down in Denver, but until the middle of summer, that difference can cause... well... snow.

Hi Thanos! Sigh, color me confused. Here's an article that talks about the IMF, the U.S. percentages, and so on. But, it appears to be a pretty complicated method IMF uses to calculate which "dollars" are considered usable and which are not.
In either case, it looks like the U.S. contribution (since we're considered "usable") is pretty small compared to the euro-zone countries.
Heh, wish I understood it all a little better, but it would seem we're not bailing Greece out, just contributing a bit through IMF lending decisions. In any case, this appears to be the key:
Will the money be wasted? That depends on whether the Greek electorate swallows the cuts in salary and pensions required by the IMF and the country's European partners and whether a new economic strategy boosts Greece's competitive position.
I hope Greece can turn itself around!

Earlier this week we learned that the Maine GOP, during its state convention, replaced its standard platform with a hilarious four-page teabagger e-mail that one local reporter could only describe as “a mix of right-wing fringe policies, libertarian buzzwords and outright conspiracy theories.” It turns out, though, that this was only the second most comical thing that the teabaggers did during the convention. Some folks, while caucusing in a rented classroom at the nearby middle school, got it in their heads that the classroom’s teacher was a commie liberal indoctrinating the children with commie liberalism, and so they just dug through all of his stuff and trashed the place.
“We allowed them to use the space and I’m appalled that they would go through a teacher’s things, let alone remove something from a classroom,” [school committee member Sarah] Thompson said Wednesday. “We want the public to use school spaces, but they need to respect that it’s a school and understand that they should leave it the way they find it.”
The Republican State Convention was held at the Portland Exposition Building, which is on Park Avenue, near the middle school. Party members from Knox County caucused in a classroom used by eighth-grade social studies teacher Paul Clifford.
When Clifford returned to school on Monday, he found that a favorite poster about the U.S. labor movement had been taken and replaced with a bumper sticker that read, “Working People Vote Republican.”
Later, Clifford learned that his classroom had been searched. Republicans who had attended the convention called Principal Mike McCarthy to complain about “anti-American” things they saw there, including a closed box containing copies of the U.S. Constitution that were published by the American Civil Liberties Union.
They called someone named McCarthy to complain about how unamerican the teacher was. Nice!

"Up" as far as I'm concerned. A lot of people thought that it was the worst show of the whole series.
A lot of people complained that the episode was trying to explain the whole "mystery" as some new age mystical stuff.
That's not the point. For these people, about 2500 years ago, coming upon that island, it WAS MYSTICAL. The episode was not trying to explain anything from a contemporary point of view.
2500 years later, when Dharma was investigating the Island, what do we find, a lot of science. They were scientifically looking into the mysteries.
And the episode told us so much. The origin of the conflict between Jacob and the MIB, how the rules work (he who is in charge makes up the rules), the origins of the two bodies in the cave, the constant black and white themes, the "game" playing nature of the characters, the fact that what is on the Island, men have and want more of (power?), the fact that Jacob can't lie, I could go on and on...
It was a very revealing episode, framed with in the mindset of the people of that time.

I must say that traveling within the Eurozone is much easier since you don't have to take a bath to change money every time you change borders.

He said a source had revealed that the suspect was an Asian woman, believed to have mental health problems.

On the bright side, it's looking more and more likely that my best friend and her husband will be able to join us on our trip this December, since it's looking like it's going to be a lot less expensive than last year's trip was.

I know..I want to take my wife back to see her family..it's almost a year now since we've visited...but the darn airfares are just way out of line for our budget right now...I can only hope oil can drop more to effect the flight prices..but with the airlines cutting back on the # of flights, I doubt even lower fuel prices will help. but if you can swing the airfare now is the time to go.

Getting a visa took about 6 weeks. We didn't travel through Russia, we just visited Moscow where my son was living at the time.
While I did the usual tourist stuff, visiting the Kremlin museums (awesome!) Zedushka preferred the Pirate Mall. He bought a bunch of software and DVD's which we could have been totally busted for bringing back to the U.S.

To these people I say now: leave us alone with your identity politics, and your condescending anti-merit attitude. As they continue to advance, individual Protestants will be given every opportunity to compete on an equal playing field with the Papists and the Yids.

Getting a visa took about 6 weeks. We didn't travel through Russia, we just visited Moscow where my son was living at the time.
While I did the usual tourist stuff, visiting the Kremlin museums (awesome!) Zedushka preferred the Pirate Mall. He bought a bunch of software and DVD's which we could have been totally busted for bringing back to the U.S.
Forgot to add: having a Russian Federation visa in our passports got us lots of extra attention from Homeland Security on other, completely unrelated trips both domestic and abroad.

Mr. Chairman, speaking for myself and myself only, it is my personal belief that allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly would be the right thing to do. No matter how I look at this issue, I cannot escape being troubled by the fact that we have in place a policy which forces young men and women to lie about who they are in order to defend their fellow citizens. For me personally, it comes down to integrity – theirs as individuals and ours as an institution. I also believe that the great young men and women of our military can and would accommodate such a change. I never underestimate their ability to adapt.

6 weeks isn't so bad. Russia and the Ukraine are very high on our list of places to go. DH's Ukrainian Jew and Polish, so he'd love to see the area. I've been warned that getting a visa for travel can be difficult and they're very, very strict on internal travel still, so you need to have your paperwork and it gets checked a lot on railways and such.

Sort of the foot-stomping personal-faith excitement of the small evangelical churches that have been siphoning Latino Catholics away from the Church, combined with traditional Catholicism.
We had a group at the parish connected to the school I used to teach at. They used the classrooms for weekend prayer gatherings and classes. They always left the desks in different places, and left trash behind, so they were not my favorite people.

One thing I love about my Church is I can go to the service that fits my mood.
My local parish is very mainstream and Vatican II, but there is at least one big old church that does it in Latin. I've never been much for guitar masses, but if I'm feeling all nostalgic for Eastern Europe I can go to the Ukrainian Catholic Church on Eastern Avenue and hear the Orthodox-style mass while still being in a Catholic Church.

This seems to be a trend. A while back I had occasion to invite an old class-mate into my study. I hadn't seen him in years and he turned out to have converted to tea-partyism in the meantime. He made a point of asking me why I had two copies of the Communist Manifesto on the shelves. I responded jokingly that they were model targets for my model Huey gunship and various other scale warplanes around the room. Then he noticed that my P-39 Airacobra model had Soviet markings (more than half of the P-39s produced were given to the Soviets under lend-lease) and that I had other models of Soviet aircraft. He pointedly asked why I had such an interest and said it could almost seem like "honoring communism." It took me a minute to realize he wasn't joking in this weird and frankly moronic attempt at an inquisition, in my study, in my home, where I had invited him as a gesture to the good old days. I confessed to being a Bolshevik and showed him the door. It was really kind of creepy.

It's evident that the crazy mom was keeping the "smoke thing" in check, just like Jacob, just like Ben, but I suspect that she also could summon it if the need warranted. She didn't destroy that village and fill in that well alone.
And when she was killed (by the same knife that Dogan had and Sayid had to kill Locke), she said "thank you."
I had the impression that when the man in black was thrown in, he transformed into Smokey, but then that does not explain how Jacob's adoptive mother was able to kill all the settlers and fill in the well.
I saw my earlier hunch confirmed though, that Smokey is not pure evil, my sympathies were with Jacob's brother, not Jacob who chose to side with that murderous "mother". I'm still rooting for Smokey to win the day.
Also interesting that Jacob's brother could see the dead whereas Jacob could not. So Hurley and the other dead whisperers have something in common with MIB. Is that why his "mother" said he was special?
Inquiring mind need to know!

I was responding to your down-ding out of nowhere, and basically for nothing. What exactly was your stake, interest or other in the original exchange? Why the knee-jerk down-dings? Was there a political, philosophical or personal issue involved?
