Mark Souder: Creationist Activist on Capitol Hill

Politics • Views: 2,528

An interesting footnote to the Mark Souder scandal: he was also one of the main promoters of creationism (in its “intelligent design” disguise) on Capitol Hill.

I was going to post the following video of Souder being “interviewed” by his mistress Tracy Jackson, about the very influential role he played in trying to get creationism into science classes through the ID backdoor, but former Rep. Souder has been deleting all the videos in which he appeared with Jackson from his YouTube channel.

I watched the video before it was disappeared; Souder boasts about his connections to the creationist think tank Discovery Institute, says he was the one who introduced Rick Santorum to the “intelligent design” scam, and says he was responsible for parts of Ben Stein’s ridiculous and extremely deceptive anti-evolution film “Expelled.”

Souder wasn’t just a hypocritical “family values” guy — he was an activist working hard to push right wing anti-evolution pseudo-science into the classrooms of America, a busy little theocratic horndog implementing the Discovery Institute’s Wedge Strategy.

America is much better off today without him in Washington.

Youtube Video

UPDATE at 5/18/10 4:56:47 pm:

The Sensuous Curmudgeon has been on to Souder’s creationist hijinks for a while: Mark Souder, Creationist Fool, Resigns!

Don’t sweat it, Charles! Dylan Ratigan had some of that interview up on his show today, so I have no doubt that we won’t need the Wayback Machine to find it. It’ll get archived at Kos, I’m certain.

From the comments at Conservapedia: In Example 5, Kate starts out as a Conservative. But by the end of the example, she has an STD. Does this mean she’s no longer a Conservative, since one of the benefits that Conservatives bring to the table is “freedom from sexually transmitted diseases”? If yes, it seems like a regrettably harsh and unfair outcome. Is there some means by which Kate can appeal this decision? Cua1101 14:34, 16 June 2008 (EDT)

The philandering thing doesn’t bother me. He is a politician, ergo, a hypocrite. The family values thing just serves as a platform for that hypocrisy.

Dems who get busted are equally despicable. The ‘we’re just better people’ meme is the platform they piss on.

Cheating has a limited ‘hurt’ factor- the candidate, his family and sometimes the ‘other____’ . Creationist crap hurts a lot more people- and that starts with kid.

In my opinion, I think the only person who has a right to a negative reaction when it comes to infidelity is the one who has been infideled (wot?). In this case, Souder’s wife.

I absolutely concur with Researchok’s comment up thread. It is the forcing of creationist indoctrination that should be more damning.

Before going into yet more reasons why nutters like this ought not be allowed within 500 yards of an education board or an elected position, I had a fabulous philosophical discussion with a student that I wanted to share.

He is very bright and very earnest. I like the kid a lot.

He was arguing about how obvious it is that people are just insane all of the time and that if only people culd use logic a little more there would be no Sarah Palin, confusion over AGW or painful personal relationships.

I said I agreed with the first two, but not the third.

He went into a discourse on the power of logic even in romantic settings. All that mattered was being consistent.

I asked him to consider the following argument.

1. All Athenians are French
2. Louis XIV was Athenian
3. Therefore all Louis XIV was French.

He said that was preposterous. I said really, where is the flaw in the logic or the consistency of the argument?

He said ok fine, there was no flaw in the logic, just a flaw in the facts.

I said ok,

Consider the following argument:

1. She is the most beautiful woman in history.
2. I love her with all of my heart.
3. No woman could ever be better.

He said well if you consider beauty to be a primary value, I suppose that’s logical.

I said, no, that is not the point. A related point maybe, but not the point.

He said fine, but your French example was based on a faulty premise. I said, now we have the point. What constitutes a faulty premise if you are dealing with something that can’t be measured?

In the second argument, What if the lady in question is 75 years old and 75 pounds overweight?

Her 80 year old husband may well reason exactly like that even if you only see her as the opposite of beautiful. He does not. Human beings are not equations. Humans are much harder than physics. Perhaps we do physics because that is one subject we can nail down.

The real point is to make certain that human variability in perceptions does not alter facts of physical measurement, but to accept that it is ok to have different perceptions of non-physical assessments. It is not to make people lose their perceptions. So yes, in matters of history and science and anything that is measurable and verifiable, your emotions have no place at all in your perceptions, as much as possible. In terms of people though, who knows. I rather like people more than computers anyway, because when I think of my relative worth to the people in my life that have loved me, no logic would come out in my favor.

Vitter appealed to a “higher authority”:

This was a very serious sin in my past for which I am, of course, completely responsible. Several years ago, I asked for and received forgiveness from God and my wife in confession and marriage counseling. Out of respect for my family, I will keep my discussion of the matter there — with God and them. But I certainly offer my deep and sincere apologies to all I have disappointed and let down in any way. - David Vitter

Yep, the Paulians and Stormfront are going to be partying tonight. Rand Paul is slaughtering Trey Grayson.

Conspiracy buffs are loving it too. On my way back from an interview today I ran across a conspiracy fan I used to work with. I was polite and deferential as always but when things turned to politics I said “Well, it looks like you’re to get your man in (ie. Rand Paul) in Kentucky. He responded “Oh, yeah. The only way he won’t win is if they cheat.” (which fitted into the Paulian antics Charles has posted but about which I did not know at the time) I responded by saying that that was unlikely because Kentucky “is not as well organized for cheating as here in Illinois”. Minor tidbit I thought it worthwhile to relay.

Its a primary. Paul will face either Dan Mongiardo or Jack Conway in November. Right now I expect the general election to be close-Paul will be well funded by his father’s supporters, and Obama is not well-liked in Kentucky.

The Founding of Project Open Hand:
Project Open Hand was founded in San Francisco in 1985, by Ruth Brinker, a retired meal service manager, who began preparing meals for 7 people living with AIDS. The first grassroots response to the nutritional needs of people with AIDS in the nation, Project Open Hand continues to be a model for similar organizations around the world.

In the past year Project Open Hand has:

Prepared 365,000 meals for people living with HIV/AIDS and other illnesses;

Distributed 76,000 bags of healthful groceries to peoples living with HIV/AIDS or breast cancer;

Provided 360,000 hot lunches to 3,400 seniors at 26 sites in San Francisco and Alameda County;

re: #43 researchok

You know what I don’t understand? Why on earth are the Dems still backing Blumenthal?

GOPer or Dem, bad behavior ought to get you escorted to the door.

Isn’t bad behavior on the part of a politico a tradition? Who wants to break from tradition?

Aside from me, I mean.

I think it’s time to join the 21st century and start holding elections on Saturday. Think about it. Today’s election in Kentucky closed at 6 PM. Most working people get off work at about 5 PM and many have other things to do first.

We in Oregon have ascended. VOTE BY MAIL BABY!

Whoa! I couldn’t figure out what part of LGF the traffic was coming from. Then I realized that Charles had added a link to my humble blog. Yes, your Curmudgeon has been following the Souder saga for quite some time. It’s very good of you green folks to notice. Thanks, Charles.

OK guys picture this with me…

Imagine G-d, in a fit of extreme humor and poetic justice, teleported that party right into the middle of an Israeli military base about to deploy for maneuvers.

The joy of seeing fat tattooed ubermenschen facing Israeli commandos amuses me just a little more than Inglorious Basterds would..

Though honestly, telepoting them to the South side of Chicago also has some appeal…

Other places they may enjoy—

South Central
East LA
Bedford-Stuyvesant
East side of Cleveland
South Bronx
Hill District (Pittsburgh)
Calle Ocho

I e-mailed a college buddy in Souder’s district—very Catholic (eight kids), CPA, master’s degree, conservative with a small c. Here’s his take—

“He always seemed like a sincere guy. I’ve met him a couple times, and we had a discussion on the minimum wage and he was pretty honest - he admitted everyone knew it didn’t work, but that he was going to vote for increases anyway.

The resignation and admitted affair came as a surprise. He always seemed squeaky clean. The pro-marijuana crowd didn’t like him though, and I’m sure they are glad to see him go.

The Republicans pushed through a no-affairs-with-staffers rule (I know…) which they believe made them morally superior to Democrats. The drawback, of course, is when you get caught, there’s serious pressure to quit.

I think this opens the door for Tom Hayhurst, the Democrat candidate. However, it’s not clear who will be appointed to take Souder’s name on the November ballot, so who knows?

Souder might have still won re-election in the fall, even with a scandal. The trick seems to be to avoid resigning, but he didn’t play it that way. Then again, there’s a few governors/congressmen/senators I wish would go away after their scandals, yet they continue to hang on.”
