Fantastic Four #73: When Superheroes Collide

Arts • Views: 5,241

After a wacky day, here’s another photo from the Lizard Comic Collection: issue #73 of The Fantastic Four, published in April 1968 (and this copy looks like it just came off the rack), pitting all of the hottest 1968 Marvel characters against each other as the story lines from several different Marvel comics collide.

Everywhere I read there seems to be a consensus that there isn’t an enthusiasm gap, as was expected, and the dems are getting their shit together.

Today’s update on the MC252 oil well incident in the Gulf.

The “riser insertion tube tool (RITT)” is now estimated to be capturing 2,000 barrels a day of oil which is being stored on the drill ship. The methane is being burnt, a process called flaring.

That is an unknown fraction of the leak that is estimated to be spewing 85% of the gas/oil mixture. BP definitely found a lot of both.

They are apparently not even trying to capture the 15% issuing from the leak right above the BOP stack. As we know, BP, the Coast Guard, and the drilling industry in general were all caught unprepared for the impossible likely blow out and failure of the Cameron TL double BOP.

Two rigs are drilling away at the two relief wells which could kill the MC252 well. End of July is likely the earliest these could try to intersect the MC252 well. Both could run into problems and fail.

The big hope is that they will be able to top kill the gusher in the meantime. By injecting heavy enough mud to allow them to plug it with cement, which was (sans two cement plugs) where we were before they decided to take a short-cut and save a few bucks. They are also considering injecting debris into the BOP to try to clog it as part of the “top kill” operation.

Most of the equipment for the top kill is said to be on-site and the maneouvre could take place in the next week or two.

Sharia Law must never be afforded legitimacy in the domestic legal system…neither in the civil law nor in the criminal law. To do so would be to elevate religious law to a status which is repugnant to the separation of Church and State.
This is what fundamentalist Muslims are already striving for in Britain, in France, in Canada and in other Western countries.

Pretty funny song, “My Self Esteem’s Not Low Enough to Date You”

You text at 3 in the morning
And you misspell my name
You slept with half my friends on Facebook
And most of them think you are lame

You say that with me, it’s different
And you’re not that big of a dick
And if you disappear, it’s just you’re busy
Not ‘cause you’re with some chick

I know this might be uncool
But I decided to tell you the truth

My self esteem’s not low enough to date you
It’s close, but not quite there
Give me time to get a little bit more rejected
And you and I could make an awesome pair
A totally awesome pair

I seem like your perfect target
Like I’ve been lonely too long
You think that I haven’t had sex in forever
And I’ll admit that you’re not wrong

But I would rather have no one
Than this crap would let me reaffirm
I wouldn’t touch your dick if I’d been poisoned
And the antidote was in your sperm

I know this might be uncool
But I’m just telling the truth

My self esteem’s not low enough to date you
It’s close, but not quite there
Give me time to get a little bit more desperate
And you and I could make an awesome pair
A totally awesome pair

We could last forever
Just have to give me time
To learn to deal with bullshit
And blatant lies
But for now, now

My self esteem’s not low enough to date you
It’s so close, but not quite there
Give me time to get a little bit more wasted
And you and I could make an awesome pair
A totally awesome pair

Well done…when I was in college I was in a class called “The Golden Age of Satire: Pope, Swift, Gay” - after reading rhymed couplets for a semester, I decided to write my final essay in that form…the first two lines (from memory) were:
An epic poem, in medias res,
A student’s journey through this fine place…

It got a B…the teacher was an Alexander Pope expert, and while he saw the humor, he nailed me on little discrepencies in meter and rhyme.

Oh ,, we have the mammals also

Two dogs. One 12 pound mutt (part terrier) about 7 years old and one West Highland terrier, 18 pounds and about 2 years old

(don’t know the exact age of either as we got both from shelters

All of ours are rescues. 4 cats, one hand raised from approximately 3 days old, one shelter rescue, and 2 that came from the back yard, probably dumped by foreclosed owners.

Dog also came from the back yard. Called the number on her tag and got a business. No one there owned up to missing a dog. She’s absolutely the best dog in the world, even my husband who is scared of dogs fell in love with her, so we kept her.

If I were Ruler of the Universe, animal abuse would be a capital offense.

Sharia Law must never be afforded legitimacy in the domestic legal system…neither in the civil law nor in the criminal law. To do so would be to elevate religious law to a status which is repugnant to the separation of Church and State.

Hmmm.

There are, as was discussed this morning, many religious groups in the United States, my own being one of them, that have a form of religious law or stringent internal rules.

I am not opposed to opposing specific items and articles from within these codes. I myself have been known to go on a tear about the rabbinic courts mealy-mouthed handling of agunah issues, for example, both in the United States and Israel.

However, I do, in fact, think it is inappropriate to “criticize advocacy of strict adherence by all Muslims to Shariah Law”. Chabad has spent generations advocating strict adherence by all Jews to halacha. The bishops of the United States advocate the adherence of all Catholics to canon law.

I think that you are deliberately casting Sharia as a pending threat, and acting as though it is somehow a discrete entity from Islam. I don’t think this is a particularly clear or knowledgeable stance. If you have specific social or legal concerns, I’m happy to discuss them, but when you say “Sharia! What are we going to do?” my only thought is, “Huh? What do we need to do?”

And no, I don’t think a mosque telling people to adhere to the rules of their faith is wrong, although I may not like some of those rules. I also don’t think it’s wrong for a hard-shell Baptist church to tell women not to wear pants, or congregants not to dance, although I may think those rules are silly and somewhat oppressive. Not all religions are gonna be to everyone’s taste.

re: #250 Stanley Sea

here?

We failed to scream appropriately at the mere mention of Sharia.

OK, here’s an article about Ontario.

What I don’t get is this:

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty was reacting to a recommendation, by former NDP attorney general Marion Boyd, to allow Muslims to establish Shariah-based tribunals similar to Jewish and Catholic arbitration bodies

First, I don’t think the government should have anything to say about this. Religious law exists separately from, and must defer to, civil law. Secondly, I don’t understand how, if you acknowledge some religious bodies you can reject others. I come to this, clearly, from an American’s perspective. This seems to me to clearly favor Judaism and Catholicism over Islam.

Sharia law—depending on who gets to implement—includes many steps back on the treatment of women for instance. I feel it’s only appropriate to criticize. Certainly Americans have a constitutional right to criticize such, but my advocacy as a non-believer would be to ignore all authority of religion when choosing how to conduct your life.

I just listened to Miz Blanche and man, she does sound a bit shell shocked.
Halter was polling about 10 points down from where he ended up tonight which (or so Kos says) means the undecideds voted for him.
He’s a left of center Dem, not a Blue Dog like Blanche.

BUT I bet Blanche is gonna pull out all the stops in the next 3 weeks reminding voters that she is the Chairman of the Ag Committie and will be able to “get things done” for Arkansans.

I like Halter, I voted for him and I’ll vote for him in the runoff but really I just want to keep that jerk Boozman out of the Senate.

269 Spare O'Lake  Tue, May 18, 2010 9:33:02pm

re: #239 SanFranciscoZionist

Here’s the rub: many of the basic tenets of Shariah law are repugnant to our domestic civil and criminal laws. For example:
1. Requirement of women to obtain permission from husbands for daily freedoms;
2. Beating of disobedient woman and girls;
3. Execution of homosexuals;
4. Engagement of polygamy and forced child marriages;
5. Requirement of the testimony of four male witnesses to prove rape;
6. Stoning of adulteresses;
7. Lashing of adulterers;
8. Amputation of body parts for criminal offenses;
9. Female genital mutilation;
10. Capital punishment for those who slander or insult Islam;
11. Execution of apostates, or those that leave the religion of Islam
12. Inferior status for all non-Muslims, known as Dhimmitude.
13. Concept of Taquiyya: A Muslim may lie or deceive others to advance the cause of Islam.

So let’s not kid ourselves here.

I don’t even know where to begin.

First, interpreted in the style you present, I could give you a similar hellacious list from the strict halacha but that isn’t how people interpret or rule.

Clearly, Sharia cannot and will not supercede American or Canadian law. No one is going to give Muslims permission to beat their wives or execute those who leave the the faith because it might have been accepted in the old country.

In practice, it does not. What’s the last time a Muslim leader in the west told someone to amputate a thief’s hand? Seriously?

Your list shows ignorance. For example, FGM is not required by Sharia, it’s a cultural custom which is only mentioned in the Hadith in the context of Mohammed showing some reserve about endorsing it.

You’re honestly on a paranoid tear here, and I don’t know what to tell you, except that you’re letting your distaste for Islam build up into something that doesn’t strike me as realistic or informed.

Now, if you have evidence that this mosque in New York is telling people to disregard the laws of New York and the United States, and setting up a theocratic Murder Inc., give it to us, and I will be concerned. So far you’ve shown nothing except deep, deep concern.

re: #125 Bagua

As I have posted in previous threads, the “siphon” (it can’t be a siphon) can only recover 4 - 5% of the spill based on flow rate and the areal coverage of the pipe. If BP is saying that 2,000 bbls per day is what they are recovering, that means that the release is 80 - 100,000 bbls per day.

Ouch.

Obviously, BP does not want to release the extent of the release, because they have to pay royalties on every barrel of oil and every cubic foot of gas that is released.

Because it’s not practiced in the form you describe anywhere in the Western world, and it won’t be.

However, if U.S. Muslims would rather go to a Muslim legal expert to arrange religious, family or civil matters, or if U.S. Muslims attempt to closely follow the requirements of their faith in private life, I cannot imagine why the hell this is any of my business.

Not everything has to be codified in law. I agree, it won’t become the law here. My comment was more about the threat sharia law within a subculture—that is still a problem.

Could be, but if I got freaking out here about the threat posed by strict religious rulings in very devout Protestant communities here, people would call me a bigot, and they’d be right.

I think if someone is trapped by a religious community, they no longer have the freedom to conduct their own lives. Don’t know what provision in law would make that illegal—it’s not quite slavery—but it sure strips people of liberty. That should be illegal in my view.

Fair view, but we’re getting away here from anything specific to Islam.

Hi Austinblue,

I’ve seen conflicting statements about the potential of the “riser insertion tube tool”, they were previously saying that it could capture up to 85% of the leak, and elsewhere stated that the place where it is inserted is 85% of the total leak (they don’t appear to be even trying to capture from the leak at the top of the BOP stack).

This suggested to me that they thought they could capture 100% of the leak from the riser as it would equal 85% of the whole leak, with that now revised to a more realistic 50%. Of course, if they are wrong, or lying, about the volume of the leak, then that would be revised down, dramatically in the case of your estimates.

Scientologists do so.

For Jews… the chasidim don’t generally do physical harm to those who leave the community, but they do symbolically kill them. They declare them dead, the family sits shiva, and then they’re never spoken of again.

Christians… I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s factions (cough*phelps*cough) who might just do violent things to what they consider betrayers.

I think the difference organizationally is that Miss USA goes on to compete for the Miss Universe title. Also, there seems to be some consensus that Miss USA is the sluttier title, while Miss America is more Junior Miss.

I knew absolutely nothing about this until it came on the lizards’ radar, however.

Donald Trump owns the Miss USA pageant.

There was a narrative in place that there was an enthusiasm gap between Ds and Rs. Hence the coverage, and the perception that some of those elections are predictors. The enthusiasm gap didn’t materialize, Ds did quite well.

Those who want to leave the faith are often threatened with death. The potential for honor killings would certainly be a concern. Again, this would still be illegal, but hard core Jews/Christians/Scientologists/Zoroastrarians/etc don’t typically threaten physical harm to those who leave.

If a religious community ruled for instance that females in their community were not allowed to have employment in certain roles, for instance. Shouldn’t they be subject to discrimination law?

Dunno. Should churches that refuse to let women work outside the home be subject to discrimination law?

There is all kinds of potential for abuse in close-knit religious communities, but we don’t ban them on account of that.

Employment discrimination law in the United States

Under Federal law, employers generally cannot discriminate against employees on the basis of:

* Race
* Sex
* Pregnancy
* Religion
* National origin
* Disability (physical or mental, including HIV status)
* Age (for workers over 40)
* Military service or affiliation
* Anticipated deployment with the Reserves or National Guard[citation needed]
* Bankruptcy or bad debts
* Genetic information
* Citizenship status (for citizens, permanent residents, temporary residents, refugees, and asylees)

Right. But we can uphold the law. I think the practice of sharia law —and since some have a problem calling it a law, maybe I’ll just call it sharia customs :). We wouldn’t be legislating against communities, but we would be enforcing the law against illegal practices. I don’t think religious rulings should be given special consideration when deciding such things as enforcing discrimination laws.

My argument is that all such religious based quasi-law should be under the same scrutiny as anyone. Sharia law can be turned into an oppressive force. It needs to be opposed.

re: #369 Bagua

Yup, BP is saying “We are concentrating on stopping the release rather than quantifying it.” But if you don’t know how big it is, how can you engineer a fix? I think they have decided on a “suck along” PR campaign that makes it seems that they are taking action when they know, in their heart of hearts, that the only viable solution are the relief wells.

Another two months.

Thing is though, it was with 12 year olds. All to the same old dude.

One thing I thought very interesting when that all came up is that apparently the fringe polygamous Mormon groups have a pattern of throwing out teenage boys and young men from the group when they fail to measure up. If the older men are going to be awarded multiple wives, they have to do something to keep the male population proportionately low.

In the old days, I suppose, homesteading Utah was enough to do that.

Employment discrimination law in the United States

Under Federal law, employers generally cannot discriminate against employees on the basis of:

* Race
* Sex
* Pregnancy
* Religion
* National origin
* Disability (physical or mental, including HIV status)
* Age (for workers over 40)
* Military service or affiliation
* Anticipated deployment with the Reserves or National Guard[citation needed]
* Bankruptcy or bad debts
* Genetic information
* Citizenship status (for citizens, permanent residents, temporary residents, refugees, and asylees)

[Link: en.wikipedia.org…]

Right, so how many discrimination cases are brought against religious organizations who hire employees that are only of one faith? How many muslims/atheists/etc work at catholic private schools?

Or if a Catholic hospital in Arizona fires an administrator for making an ethics decision that contradicts the Bishop’s declaration of church teaching?

Most definitely. Thanx for the specific examples—the abortion case being in the news recently. Was there an employee benefits case of the sort you refer to as well?

I could only guess because I don’t think that Sharia is a creeping threat to much of anything in the United States.

Frankly, I’ve been hearing about the Christians taking over the United States since the late 70s and I’m still waiting. Sure, they’ve had some influence but nothing like the paranoia I’ve heard from back in my pseudo hippie days.

I keep hearing stories like that. I really don’t know what’s going on in Catholic communities all over this country. I spent a large part of my childhood in Portugal, where I was never taught that sort of hair-raising stuff.

The Irish have issues with sex. I say this ruefully, as the daughter of an Irish Catholic. We had an unfortunately large influence on the Church in America.

And I don’t feel comfortable opposing Sharia simply because it ‘can’ be turned into an oppressive force. I’ll oppose any oppressive behavior, certainly.

I feel comfortable opposing sharia law—and any other religious law—even if there is no legal recourse for me. I simply oppose it as my right is to hold such a view. Why do I have that view? Simply because these religious based rules restrict people’s freedom. If there is nothing I can do legally to prevent people from putting blinders on others in their community, I will certainly speak out about it.

It’s not just the BOP failure. That kick didn’t come from nowhere. The BOP failure was just the last link in a long chain of failures.

It’s like a lot of airplane crashes. If you read the final NTSB reports, you’ll find multiple failures lead to crashes. Yes.

Catholic Charities has a city contract to do soup kitchens and a reading program. Their employees used to have, like at many large employers, a health care plan that covered spouses and offspring. Then DC decided to legalize same-sex marriage, and the church started hyperventilating that that vein on their forehead bulged because they didn’t want to have to cover some gay guy’s male spouse.

They solved the problem by canceling their health care plan. Now none of the employees are covered. Just like Jesus would have done.

It’s not the easiest thing in the world to prove discriminatory hiring practices, though.

If I were going to become a Christian, I would become a Catholic. And then dabble with Coptic and Eastern Orthodox stuff.

Biblical literalists don’t do it for me.

Such an eclectic mix of religious ideas :)

It’s funny you know. After thinking about my list and you mentioning the Japanese the rest of the world is thinking, “the USA is taking over!” Meanwhile, we’re sitting here in the USA thinking, “um, no we’re not.”

The Irish have issues with sex. I say this ruefully, as the daughter of an Irish Catholic. We had an unfortunately large influence on the Church in America.

We’re great on service and social justice, and partying. Bad on sexual matter.

The Portuguese tradition - placing a (properly blessed) statue of a saint in every niche of your house and hiring people to cry at the funerals of particularly uncharismatic people.

I know you’re big on that Bagua but all I can say is that it’s barely been written in stone in Europe and there’s still a lot of loose ends. Currently there’s been a lot of rumblings about the EU after this deal with Greece. It’s all still up to a vote for each member country.

You’d be surprised how easy it actually is. Employment law—if you’re not a religious entity—is hard core about such things. All they have to do is ask questions about the beliefs of a candidate, and there would be enough of a case to get past summary judgment in most jurisdictions. Once that happens, the plaintiff has already won—either the employer gets to drop a ton on legal fees or they get to pay the bastard a settlement.

You are talking about the permanency of the EU, which I agree is in doubt and being tested now. However, there is absolutely no dispute on any side that the EU is steadily gaining in size and competences as the years go on. The EU in fact congratulates itself for this. One can argue that the EU super-state is a good thing, but one must recognise the elephant that is in fact in the room.

It probably does bother someone. What if there was a position like art teacher—which if you’re in primary ed know such positions are hard to come by and highly sought after by qualified candidates. So many public schools have cut their art programs, and perhaps some atheist hippie would love to have that job—any job—as an art teacher.

I’m pretty sure you’re a pretty cool teacher—that school’s loss that they could never have you.

Which pales in comparison to Forever Knight’s terrible, horrible, no-good very bad finale.

I loved that show, but the ending was so awful I could never watch a rerun and have zero interest in DVDs.

(wasn’t thrilled with the SG1 or SGA endings either, but at least they’re fixable in fic).

Only good thing about where the US is vis-a-vis the financial fiascoes of recent years is that compared to the US the EU is screwed.

Sad thing is, in one way or the other we’ll end up buying the bonds that float their economies—and to do that, we’ll just borrow more money. From where? We’ll print more of course .

Of course, and you are quite correct the the EU-in-progress ultimately lacks the deep reserves of the US system, both financial and political. The US would suffer from a deep recession, currency devaluation or even depression brought on by a large default event, but it is not in danger of falling apart as a union.

The EU alternatively has weak knees and should the Euro crash then it is likely going to end in tears. That is why the Eurocrats are going berserk at the moment, creating an effective state treasury out of thin air without so much as a may I.

It’s probably good that they are acting in concert to put together the equivalent of a state treasury—the alternative is they fight a lot more with each other. Really most of the EU is in a united they (possibly) stand, divided they fall moment.

There really is no cash reserve to absorb all this world debt. And who knows how long the China bubble will last. I’m thinking we’ll be lucky if we can have a decade or two of 70s style stagflation.

We will see how good it is when Germany can no longer foot the bill for Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal and the rest. The citisens of the more sensible nations, fiscally, may end up quite pissed that their treasury got pitched into the pot.

Nope. In the past the alternative was for countries such as Greece and Italy o devalue their currencies as needed, while countries such as Germany could hold off inflation. The fit was never there.

But yes, this is a potentially telling moment in the rise and fall of the EU.

There really is no cash reserve to absorb all this world debt. And who knows how long the China bubble will last. I’m thinking we’ll be lucky if we can have a decade or two of 70s style stagflation.

Right, but the US will be able to adjust its monetary policy as suits itself, as will the other independent economies. The Eurozone and largely the EU itself is finding themselves all together in the same sock, and one size does not fit all.

The rift between mainland Europe and Britain is not so different from that between the two Chinas, only that they are not fighting each other with missiles and submarines any more but now have come to the level of dueling by the means of trading taxes and infrastructure cuts. Berlin is so bitter that London decided fiscal responsibility meant hurting the feelings of the industry lobbyists that they chose virtually overnight to stick it all to the banking sector. Which is quite ridiculous since at this point the euro currency doesn´t even manage to get its growth expectations harmonized with its climate goals.
