Tom Petty’s music is timeless …. he is a fixture on my ipod

When 60 Minutes did a piece on Petty a few months ago, they did it in the location where this video was shot. I think it’s in a nondescript warehouse near Culver City ;)

Interesting…I’m listening to this while streaming the CNN feed from the Gulf Oil spill…this is definitely an appropriate tune to watch the oil leak by.

Darth - I watched for awhile.
What exactly are you expecting to see?
Or is it just the trainwreck effect, where you just can’t keep your eyes off the disaster happening right in front of you?

I’d just put it on to see the video quality, as an earlier link was spotty. I happened to start the Tom Petty song around the same time, so I used the oil spill as the video for the music…given the song’s lyrics, the two were a good match.

Well damn. Petty gets better with age. I used to not listen to any of his stuff, but I go back now and it’s all listenable, and this one is just something I think I’ll have to get.

BP: Oil gusher bigger than we estimated

Washington (CNN) — BP acknowledged Thursday that the gusher of oil pouring from its damaged Gulf of Mexico well is bigger than estimated to date, as new video showed a cloud of crude billowing around its undersea siphon.

Company spokesman Mark Proegler said Thursday that the siphon is now drawing about 5,000 barrels (210,000 gallons) a day up to a ship on the surface. That’s as much as government and company officials had estimated the spill was pouring into the Gulf every day for a month. Proegler declined to estimate how much more oil was escaping.

BP America Chairman Lamar McKay said Wednesday the figure used by the oil spill response team had a degree of uncertainty built into it. But figures by independent researchers have run up to many times higher: Steve Wereley, a professor of mechanical engineering at Purdue University, told CNN’s “American Morning” that the spill could be as big as 20,000 to 100,000 barrels a day.

And members of Congress released video from the company that showed much more oil pouring out of the damaged well than the siphon was capturing.

Now that the entire planet is looking at their video and hundreds of scientists will be making the same estimates, of course they’re admitting that it’s bigger than they had been claiming.

Breaking….

There are indications that the now-deceased suspects in this morning’s police shootings in West Memphis AR had white supremacist connections.

Wilmington News Journal, Wilmington OH:

Occupants of a van registered to the House of God’s Prayer in New Vienna were involved in a shootout Thursday afternoon in West Memphis, Ark. Two police officers were killed.

According to The Associated Press, the police officers had pulled over the van along Interstate 40. After the officers were shot, the suspects fled the scene.

A short time later, the suspects were killed in a separate shootout with a county sheriff and a deputy, both of whom were wounded.

Names and addresses of the suspects have not yet been released.

Colonel Brian Prickett, chief deputy with the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, said the van is registered to a former white supremacist church in New Vienna that has been closed for many years.

WAFF-TV

According to vehicle registration records, the 1994 Plymouth driven by the suspects is owned by an Ohio church - the House of God’s Prayer in New Vienna, Ohio.

Action News 5’s attempts to reach someone from the church were unsuccessful Thursday. A postal worker in New Vienna said the church rents property in the town, but does not hold services.

The Dow is down 10% in 3 weeks. At this point, I’m going to say it’s a bull market correction based on the too quick run-up last year and nervousness over European problems. Also, May through September tend to be bad months for the major indexes.

But much lower than this and I’m going to get nervous.

This is an interesting idea but if we go with that shouldn’t we also need higher punishments for people who kill government employees?

Does the higher punishment still apply if you kill the police officer when they’re off duty?

(Not sarcastic)

Honestly, I can’t believe anyone would ask questions like this.

So far it appears the dispersant is working, decreasing the size of the oil droplets. The probe results indicate that the dissolved oxygen readings are within the normal range. BP will have to switch to a less toxic dispersant within three days.

Of course, no leak will remain the preferred alternative. But there is a leak, a big one, and the dispersants are either blessing or a curse, or both. 100,000 barrels of oil that disperse harmlessly are quite different than 100,000 barrels which coat an estuary. Alternatively, the downside to the dispersants could be worse and affect a wider area, it is a complete unknown.

The proof is in the pudding. Now that they are “siphoning” 5,000 barrels a day from the insertion tube device we have some actual measurements to help refine the estimates.

Yes, but they were unwilling to admit they were leaking more than 5000 barrels a day until they could no longer deny it.

Lots of good folks out there. Nice horse farms too. I used to go every once in awhile to this town - forgot what it was called. On the road out there, there is a car that is smashed under a giant boulder. Literally - like something you’d see on tv. Guess the boulder came down the mountain, ended up on top of the car, and the owner said, “eh, fuck it. glad I wasn’t inside”

It is obvious from events that BP, and the oil/gas industry itself were unprepared for this and are frantically trying to create a disaster plan as they go along. I agree that they must also consider PR and legal demands to provide access for independent review of their work and all data collected.

I’m not convinced that they should devote resources to a grand-standing academic at the actual site unless they need him there at this time. There is a tremendous array of vessels, men and sub-sea robots and devises on location. The data will be poured over in great detail in the months to come.

Nobody that knows anything thinks Napa is a joke for wine making..The only reason anybody else can even make a great bottle of wine is because of Napa when we beat the holy hell out the French in the 70’s…USA! USA!

I honestly don’t see how he can, when all his opponent needs to do is pull a few honest-to-God Luap supporters’ rants off of YouTube, excerpt them in a string of five- to ten-second clips, and show them after an image of Rand Paul sitting in a Fox News studio without his pants on while a doomy voice intones, “This is what Rand Paul and his father’s supporters believe.”

Supporter Number 3: “No one has the right to tell me I have to serve n***ers in my lunchroom…”

Procedure, I suppose. You don’t want the guy you ‘think’ is dead or unconscious suddenly deciding to pop up again and continue the fight. And you follow procedure, even if it’s pretty obvious to anyone that the guy isn’t merely dead, he’s really most sincerely dead.

Napa Valley is the undisputed King in the wine world. There are Frenchmen crying.

Napa Valley, to most people, means California wines. But there are 19 different terroirs in Napa Valley, and then just over the hill is Sonoma, and beyond that Alexander Valley, the Russian River Valley, Mendocino Coast, etc. You want a great port? Head up Highway 128 towards Mendocino…they do great Cab grapes there, and have some very rich ports. Want a great Pinot? Head down the coast toward Monterey…or go to the Simi Valley in the south for great Burgundies.

Additionally, the Sierra foothills are home to a lot of good wineries now.

It was actually a fairly common point to go through on the way from Russia to the U.S. at one point. They didn’t stay more than a few months, AFAIK. Shanghai became a fairly important part of the family story, however, because on the first day they were there, my great-grandmother’s kid brother wandered off and got lost, and given the language gap and the size of the city, they were sure they’d lost him forever. Luckily, some kind soul found him and brought him back to the transit center.

There was a colony of European Jews in Shanghai during WWII—keeping out of Europe. Many of them made it to the States after the war.

a deep-dish pie shell
1 C. sugar
2 eggs, beaten
1/4 C. chocolate chips
1 stick butter, melted
1/2 C. flour
1 t. vanilla extract
1 C. pecans

Pour melted butter into a large mixing bowl. Stir in the remaining ingredients. Pour into unbaked pie shell. Bake 35 minutes at 350.

Deepak Chopra, a fairly well known vegetarian, said that when he visits people who don’t know he’s a vegetarian and serve him meat, he eats it. It doesn’t change the fact that he’s a vegetarian, he just feels it’s better to accept the culture of others rather than put them out by making them cater to his individual needs….anyway, that’s what your comment reminded me of when I read it.
