Texas BOE Member Dunbar’s Opening Prayer: ‘A Christian Land Governed by Christian Principles’

Wingnuts • Views: 3,383

The religious fanatics who dominate the Texas State Board of Education are now debating their attempt to rewrite American history for the social studies curriculum, in one of the most appalling attempted fundamentalist power grabs I’ve ever seen.

The Texas Freedom Network is liveblogging this travesty again, and they’ve posted a video of creationist board member Cynthia Dunbar’s opening prayer, in which she makes the agenda of the fanatics perfectly clear: they intend to trash the concept of separation of church and state, and teach children that America’s laws and government should be based on the Christian Bible.

Youtube Video

“I believe no one can read the history of our country without realizing that the Good Book and the spirit of the savior have from the beginning been our guiding geniuses.”

“Whether we look to the first charter of Virginia, or the charter of New England…the same objective is present — a Christian land governed by Christian principles.”

“I like to believe we are living today in the spirit of the Christian religion. I like also to believe that as long as we do so, no great harm can come to our country.”

“I like to believe we are living today in the spirit of the Christian religion. I like also to believe that as long as we do so, no great harm can come to our country.”

Well, the fact we have idiots like you destroying both the past and the future of our country kind of exposes the lie in that statement.

She should be pleased at the progress they’re making.

We’ve had at least five killed in wingnut violence in a little over 24 hours: The two policemen and the gold-bug finance quack and his young son in Arkansas, and the census-resister kook who waved a shotgun at police in Yuba City CA.

BTW, a search of the Texas State Constitution finds no instances of the words Christ, Christian, or Jesus.

God is mentioned only 4 times. Once in the Preamble, once in the section guaranteeing freedom of worship, and twice in details on the Oaths of Office, but never specifying the Christian God.

SO GO SUCK IT.

54 Gus  Fri, May 21, 2010 12:07:21pm

Rather outrageous.

It is said that there are two kind of people in this country that honor two different founding fathers of this nation. One honors the late and true founders of this nation that brought us the Declaration of Independence, The Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.

The other honors, as is reflected in Dunbar’s words, the early founders who pledged loyalty to the British James I and those whose intent was to create a Christian nation.

The true founders are the former. They include men like George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and so on. The latter now represents the primitive or primordial stages of America’s final development as represented by the more secular or deistic nature of those intellectual on or about 1776.

Had we stopped at First Charter of Virginia and other charters pledging loyalty to God and the King this nation would never have existed and instead we would have just been another British colony.

Seconded. Even if they thought i belonged in their club, they can have it back.

Fortunately, 95% of christians i’ve met are with me on that. The other 5% i’ve met are sooo much fun to ridicule. (and i do…God help me…i don’t have the strength to stop…)

All this would still be news, but presumably less so if it wasn’t for this supposed clout that Texas has with the cost of publishing textbooks, because of volume issues.

Why is that still such a major issue in the age of Internet printing? Can not other school districts order reasonably priced books based on their own, or other more rational writers? Can not books be ordered to be custom printed for the exact needs at any given moment. Who needs fancy hardbacks that will mostly be lost, scribbled in or otherwise disposed of after a year?

137 Ning the Merciless  Fri, May 21, 2010 9:01:30pm

Dear Miss Dunbar,

Your religious beliefs are not an appropriate topic of conversation during the conduct of the State’s business. In addition to being shamefully factually challenged you exhibit a lack of respect for other people’s religious beliefs. Your credulity does not in any way constitute evidence! The founding fathers were quite acquainted with a Europe which had killed several million people in religious squabbles in the centuries immediately preceding the founding of the United States. They were not prepared to experience that stupidity all over again in America. Still there were enough devout nut-bags that they couldn’t just come off all anti-religious lest they become the next victims of a lynching. The Salem witch trials were only 80 some years before the Declaration of Independence.
