Rand Paul Backing Out of ‘Meet The Press’

News is going around Twitter that Rand Paul is now trying to cancel a Sunday appearance on Meet The Press that he committed to doing on Wednesday.

He’s scared of … David Gregory?

The Paul camp is in full tilt damage control mode. Only two other guests have ever bailed out of Meet The Press at the last minute: Louis Farrakhan and Saudi Prince Bandar.

Apparently he was deposed by the State party chair, possibly for teapartying too much. The term used was "factional differences". Yes and he will. He will be a political martyr for the stormfront crowd, but only if the Dems rightly kill the GOP for being such pussies themselves. This is a mellon and a golden opportunity to shut this shit down in its tracks. He has gone to far and he knows it. If sane people crush it now, it will staunch the flow of the poisonous movement. If not, those that really think this way will only be further emboldened. Yes he needs to get out there. Yes, people need to see what Paul is. But, it needs wide, loud and strong condemnation. Without that, it will only make matters worse, because the message will be out there, and it will seen to be an acceptable message. He'll disappear from the national scene and concentrate on his own state. A month from now, it will be last weeks news... if he can keep his ego in tow.

10 years ago, a message like that would never have gotten air time without a host of condemnation. The fact that the climate has changes so much that this has any traction at all is the direct result of falsely assuming that someone else would naturally shut it up. The message has traction because so very many whites have been told that they are victims in their own nation and they believe it. We have to step hard now with condemnation openly and loudly. He will continue to flail. He will continue to make noise. But it has to be seen as NOT OK.

We are leading to an easily prevented disaster by not condemning this vigorously. It will be seen as encouragement.

I'm a stickler on stanch/ staunch for reasons related to orthography. The "u" in staunch is not pronounced in the variant form meaning to check or halt, nor need it be. Though derived from the same root, use has caused two words to appear in our wondrous language, and I'm all for keeping them both.

As for certain americanisms ("plowed" in place of "ploughed" - I dislike them because they conceal the root terms, even though they are somewhat simpler and more "reasonable" in terms of written expression.) I recognize the arbitrariness of our rules, and wish only that the arbitrariness be such as is to my liking. And if that seems arbitrary, well, it is.

As for the post office's idiocy with place names, well, it speaks for itself.

Man tells cops God told him to stroll in the nude

THIBODAUX, La. — A man who told police that God told him to walk the streets naked to save his soul has been arrested. Thibodaux police responded to an obscenity complaint around 2 a.m. Thursday and found Shafiq Mohamed walking nude down the street. When approached, Mohamed reportedly told officers that "America raped him" and added God told him to walk the streets naked to save his soul.

Mohamed was taken into custody and charged with obscenity. He was booked into the Lafourche Parish Detention Center where he awaited bail.

It was not immediately known whether Mohamed has an attorney.

Turns out there is a precedent for this sort of thing.

If your predictions are correct, I think famine USA is more likely to look like this, or like this, or like this, because I don't think that you can compare African famines, exacerbated by warlords who use food donations to control the population, or political famines like the Ukraine, with a natural disaster like the Dust Bowl.

It is foolish to assume that we will somehow breed miracle crops that will grow under the new conditions. You are also forgetting that crops which do better in more arid environments have much lower yields and you are forgetting loss of soil moisture and changed rainfall patterns. All you have done is complain that that somehow magically no the future can't be as bad as the science is indicating, and cherry picking things that you misunderstand to make your false hopes seem more likely.

You are not an equal in this debate.

That is an excellent point. The PNAS listed of course says that they can not predict some wonder mutation plant that has yet to be bred. However, it is foolish to assume that one will arise and then bank on it. With current crops and current patterns, massive famines in America are coming. That is a fact.

Driver Sammy Rodriguez and his brother, Danny, both said they were Pentecostal
preachers, Drouillard said.

Floydada Police Chief James Hale said he had been looking for the Rodriguez
family since Tuesday night, when relatives reported them missing. "They made
statements like the devil was after them and Floydada was going to be destroyed
if they stayed here," Hale said.

So when the temperature shifts, everything will shift. The insects, the microorganisms, everything will undergo change.

In order to get harvests of the kind we have now, we'd have to be able to adapt as well to the new conditions as we have to the old ones, or to hope agains hope that somehow the new conditions and the old ones match up perfectly, so that as an acre of good corn-growing land disappears another one becomes fertile. We'll have to pray to hell that the increased temperature hasn't expanded the range of hiterhto-unknown crop diseases and parasites-- we're not going to be able to rip up everything overnight and switch it all around, we have to keep producing food during this, and the harder we're hit the less we can change every year. So we face a danger of being overwhelmed, there-- not being able to shift any crops from their current infrastructure because we desperately need them for food.

When a scientist says that more study would be needed, you cannot point to that as a solution, and you definitely still have to account for the costs of the solution.

She offered the board’s opening prayer this morning and removed any doubt about what she and other far-right board members want students to learn: America’s laws and government should be based on the Christian Bible.

Laying out in blunt language the “Christian nation” vision of American history that the board’s powerful bloc of social conservatives espouses, Dunbar threw down the gauntlet:

“I believe no one can read the history of our country without realizing that the Good Book and the spirit of the savior have from the beginning been our guiding geniuses.”

“Whether we look to the first charter of Virginia, or the charter of New England…the same objective is present — a Christian land governed by Christian principles.”

“I like to believe we are living today in the spirit of the Christian religion. I like also to believe that as long as we do so, no great harm can come to our country.”

You will recall that Dunbar, in her 2008 book, One Nation Under God, argued that the Founders created “an emphatically Christian government” (page 18 of her book) and that government should be guided by a “biblical litmus test” (page 47). Even more damning, this State Board of Education member wrote that public education is a “subtly deceptive tool of perversion,” tyrannical and unconstitutional.

And today she will help decide what the next generation of Texas students will learn about separation of church and state in their public school classrooms.

This is wonderful, but these numbers will decline dramatically if the favourable weather changes. Also, it is really a complete unknown what effect the massive plumes of sub-sea oil caused by the dispersants will have on the ecology. First measurements are very favourable, with dissolved oxygen levels within range. But this could change as new data is collected.

Well that is because he never was a scientist. When he was here, he made a false claim about entropy once. He got something wrong that a first year physics or chemistry student would know like their own name. When I challenged him on it, surprise, surprise he could not even define entropy or the canonical ensemble. In fact he mocked the phrase cannonical ensemble.

Now, I don't expect non-scientists like LArry to know Stat Mech. But I do expect people who claim to be scientists or have valid opinions about the science to know the basics. He is rather like one who claims to be a rabbi while insisting on his non-existent authority that pork is kosher.

He also didn't know basic calculus questions when challenged. Again, it's ok to not know calculus, it doesn't make you a bad person, but it does disqualify you from opining about a calculation in a scientific paper.

No, what he is, is a failed engineer. He used to work as one. No doubt his stupidity got him fired - after all his bio does not claim he does engineering for anyone anymore, and he doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground scientifically.

He's a loser and an idiot to boot.

Influential food writers, advocates, and celebrity restaurant owners are repeating the mantra that "sustainable food" in the future must be organic, local, and slow. But guess what: Rural Africa already has such a system, and it doesn't work. Few smallholder farmers in Africa use any synthetic chemicals, so their food is de facto organic. High transportation costs force them to purchase and sell almost all of their food locally. And food preparation is painfully slow. The result is nothing to celebrate: average income levels of only $1 a day and a one-in-three chance of being malnourished.

According to the suit filed in federal court in Manhattan, the club failed to provide steps and a handrail to climb onto the dais. Bork fell backward as he was attempting to climb the dais, striking his leg on the stage and his head on a heat register, the suit says.

The 80-year-old Bork suffered a large hematoma, or swelling of blood, in his lower left leg as a result of the fall and the hematoma eventually burst, according to the lawsuit. The injury required surgery and months of physical therapy, according to the complaint. He claims to have suffered “excruciating pain” as a result of the injury and continues to walk with a limp, according to the complaint.

As to the nuclear option. It too has never been attempted at such depth, has a 20% failure rate, and has been mostly used to put out large gas leaks. BP found oil.

We would need to acquire the specialised nukes from the Russians, and drill holes where they would be detonated. I don't know what diameter hole needs to be drilled or how long this would take to implement.

Specifically, the depth at which the small nuke would be detonated would be deep into the rock below the ocean floor. This would contain the radiation. But if such an attempt failed, it would no longer be possible to do any sort of Top Kill on the well.

What if it fractured the well at depth and removed the relief well option? Then the leak wouldn't end until the reservoir was depressurised. (I am just guessing here that this is a possibility.)

About fifteen years ago, when we could really not afford it, we lost some money on an investment that my uncle assured me could not lose... was connected to a Congressman ( shoulda been our first clue/) but it was a bio technology that soaked up oil spills using microbes. ' The Bugs', we called it. It was based in Houston. The stock went way up, and then, when it was too late to sell it, the whole firm went bellyup. It still seems like it was a viable option.... I wonder what ever happened to the scientists who were working on it?

Indeed. The resevoir is something like two miles below the sea bed, but I simply don't know the deformation mechanics of sedimentary rock at that depth. I tend to think that the lithostatic pressure would prevent wholesale fracturing, but I would have to go look up a number of papers on that. I have had a class in structural geology, but absolutely no practical experience.

Actually, the reservoir is about 3 miles below the sea bed. The relief wells will try to intersect the MC252 at about 18,000 feet below the sea bed. The casing is 9 5/8" at that point, just above the resevoir, as opposed to 36" at the sea bed.

If farming technology keeps in step with food production drift, adding fertilizer to the soil will boost production on bad soils and dry farming techniques will help retain moisture.

Unfortunately, high tech farming has a limited life span if water becomes scarce, as it will when continental glaciers disappear. Even if the technology for collecting water from the air and irrigation improves considerably over the next 75 years, there is a limited supply of land and water. It would be very difficult to support 400,000,000 million people with predicted water scarcity and the growth of droughts.

I think you may be over blowing the rhetoric with your pictures, but I certainly understand your frustration and sense of urgency. Our ability to adapt, through technology, land use improvements, and expanded protein sources will have an significant impact on how well that size of population survives. On top of reducing CO2, we better start putting money into adaptive technologies now.

North America, especially northern US and Canada will do considerably better than most other countries and that understanding may be why some refuse to believe increased CO2 is a bad thing for humans.

Rand Paul's assertion that businesses should be able to violate a persons' rights certainly could have had some interesting outcomes:

"What happened to your brother-in-law?"

He was suspected of shoplifting in Macy's Dept Store, so the security guard and the cashier had a trial and shot him.

"Bummer. Pep Boys only takes a finger."

Under Ayn Randian Capitalistic Theology, the customer masses would end these atrocities by not frequenting businesses that utilize such security measures.
A harsh punishment indeed.

Agreed. We may not be able to stop AGW entirely, but we might be able to reduce its severity enough to make it survivable.

There is another option- expand the number of countries that are net exporters of food.

In the 60's and 70's great agricultural strides were made in Africa. That ground to a halt as geo-political influences rejected that kind of aid. The end result was that nations on their way to self sufficiency became even bigger importers of food aid (population growth).

RAND got caught out on Stu-Pid-Did answers regarding the 1964 Civil Rights Act. I understand that HE has issues with the Public Accommodations Parts,as DID Sen. Barry Goldwater and William F. Buckley - "BACK IN THE DAY."
Sen. Goldwater and WFB "repented" from that position at the later edge of their lives. BOTH should be enough of an Example to Rand Paul. IF They are Not, I propose "The Prayer for the Czar"
