Rand Paul Backing Out of ‘Meet The Press’

Politics • Views: 4,623

News is going around Twitter that Rand Paul is now trying to cancel a Sunday appearance on Meet The Press that he committed to doing on Wednesday.

He’s scared of … David Gregory?

The Paul camp is in full tilt damage control mode. Only two other guests have ever bailed out of Meet The Press at the last minute: Louis Farrakhan and Saudi Prince Bandar.

UPDATE at 5/21/10 2:02:41 pm:

Rand Paul’s reason for backing out: he’s “exhausted.”

Adapted from the Palin playbook. Don't let the candidate go near the press. They ask too many questions.

But where is his honeymoon? He was promised a honeymoon.

Apparently.

3 freetoken  Fri, May 21, 2010 1:43:51pm

He could always ask Glenn Beck Alex Jones his father to go fill in for him.

4 recusancy  Fri, May 21, 2010 1:44:17pm

Gregory is against fact checking his shows. So you'd that would be the place for him.

5 Kragar  Fri, May 21, 2010 1:44:23pm

Over heard prior to this announcement:

"Wait...you're trying to tell me the press consists of more than Free Republic, Storm Front and Red State? Shit."

6 Cato the Elder  Fri, May 21, 2010 1:44:50pm

What, a leading GOP candidate who's afraid to talk to the media?

Inconceivable!

At least Sarah Palin could becloud the minds of Penis-Americans with a wink.

This guy is toast. A weaselly little man with a weaselly little voice who goes bawling to daddy when the bullies are mean to him.

Americans hate whiners.

Rand Paul says
Image: willy-wonka-wilder.jpg

Oh, well, then you know all about it and what a terrible country it is. Nothing but desolate wastes and fierce beasts. And the poor little Oompa Loompas were so small and helpless, they would get gobbled up right and left. A Wangdoodle would eat ten of them for breakfast and think nothing of it. And so, I said, "Come and live with me in peace and safety, away from all the Wangdoodles, and Hornswogglers, and Snozzwangers, and rotten, Vermicious Knids."

NOw where are the Dems screaming about this loudly and clearly and challenging the GOP to say something.

This should be happening everywhere, all the time, with statements like "so if you can't repudiate rolling back civil protections in businesses as per the Civil Rights act, you are a racist."

Paul knows that his message is not yet ready for prime time nationwide. We need to stake that vampiric message before it gets any more out of the crypt.

It is only a matter of time before these nuts become violent. It is already starting in small ways.

That is why it needs to be put down harshly, severely and immediately when they do get violent. If we let it spread, we have a much tougher fight down the road where even more will get killed.

Yes and he will. He will be a political martyr for the stormfront crowd, but only if the Dems rightly kill the GOP for being such pussies themselves. This is a mellon and a golden opportunity to shut this shit down in its tracks. He has gone to far and he knows it. If sane people crush it now, it will staunch the flow of the poisonous movement. If not, those that really think this way will only be further emboldened. Yes he needs to get out there. Yes, people need to see what Paul is. But, it needs wide, loud and strong condemnation. Without that, it will only make matters worse, because the message will be out there, and it will seen to be an acceptable message. The far right whacks have been getting ever more bold over the past two years. We staunch it now or we staunch it at great cost later.

He's only running in Kentucky... if he's smart, all he has to do is play this close to home and manage any damage control there... that's apparently what he has decided to do... smart move on his part... he's certainly nor ready for the national stage... this past 3 days were evidence of that.

He'll disappear from the national scene and concentrate on his own state. A month from now, it will be last weeks news... if he can keep his ego in tow.

Otherwise, he's toast if he tries to keep lashing out on a national scale.

No. Let the enemy destroy itself.

10 years ago, a message like that would never have gotten air time without a host of condemnation. The fact that the climate has changes so much that this has any traction at all is the direct result of falsely assuming that someone else would naturally shut it up. The message has traction because so very many whites have been told that they are victims in their own nation and they believe it. We have to step hard now with condemnation openly and loudly. He will continue to flail. He will continue to make noise. But it has to be seen as NOT OK.

We are leading to an easily prevented disaster by not condemning this vigorously. It will be seen as encouragement.

Ahh but which right? Make the sane RINO member of the GOP squirm for the tacit support of this from their party. You don't understand that we have already lost the far right. You will not bring reason to a teabagger since they plainly reject reason from the outset. We need to inoculate the independents.

I don't think you do that by turning this into a left-right kerfluffle. He has the attention of the media now. Let it stay firmly on him.

Good. The national level needs to hit the GOP for this. The move is let the Teabagger rift in the GOP widen. The more sane GOP people are chickening out. Force them to clean their own party or be lumped in with the racists and the asshats. Divide and conquer. And yes, while I am no Dem, they are not evil like the GOP has become and I want the GOP castrated utterly until a sane party can rise from the ashes.

I'm a stickler on stanch/ staunch for reasons related to orthography. The "u" in staunch is not pronounced in the variant form meaning to check or halt, nor need it be. Though derived from the same root, use has caused two words to appear in our wondrous language, and I'm all for keeping them both.

As for certain americanisms ("plowed" in place of "ploughed" - I dislike them because they conceal the root terms, even though they are somewhat simpler and more "reasonable" in terms of written expression.) I recognize the arbitrariness of our rules, and wish only that the arbitrariness be such as is to my liking. And if that seems arbitrary, well, it is.

As for the post office's idiocy with place names, well, it speaks for itself.

re: #163 windsagio

Oh, shit! Murray Rothbard! Fellow travelers! Rand drove him to the airport.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Rothbard was active in the Libertarian Party. He was frequently involved in the party's internal politics. From 1978 to 1983, he was associated with the Libertarian Party Radical Caucus, allying himself with Justin Raimondo, Eric Garris and Williamson Evers. He opposed the "low tax liberalism" espoused by 1980 Libertarian Party presidential candidate Ed Clark and Cato Institute president Edward H Crane III. Rothbard split with the Radical Caucus at the 1983 national convention over cultural issues, and aligned himself with what he called the "rightwing populist" wing of the party, notably Lew Rockwell and Ron Paul, who ran for President on the Libertarian Party ticket in 1988 and in the 2008 Republican Party Primaries.

In 1989, Rothbard left the Libertarian Party and began building bridges to the post-Cold War anti-interventionist right, calling himself a paleolibertarian.[62] He was the founding president of the conservative-libertarian John Randolph Club and supported the presidential campaign of Pat Buchanan in 1992, saying "with Pat Buchanan as our leader, we shall break the clock of social democracy."[63] However, later he became disillusioned and said Buchanan developed too much faith in economic planning and centralized state power.[64]

Yep, should have kept quiet.

Man tells cops God told him to stroll in the nude

THIBODAUX, La. — A man who told police that God told him to walk the streets naked to save his soul has been arrested. Thibodaux police responded to an obscenity complaint around 2 a.m. Thursday and found Shafiq Mohamed walking nude down the street. When approached, Mohamed reportedly told officers that "America raped him" and added God told him to walk the streets naked to save his soul.

Mohamed was taken into custody and charged with obscenity. He was booked into the Lafourche Parish Detention Center where he awaited bail.

It was not immediately known whether Mohamed has an attorney.

Turns out there is a precedent for this sort of thing.

Rand Paul on Deadly Mine Collapse: Sometimes Accidents Happen
Washington Independent
By Mike Lillis 5/21/10 5:34 PM

Late last month, two young coal miners were killed in western Kentucky when a roof collapsed at the Dotiki coal mine, a non-union operation owned by Tulsa, Okla.-based Alliance Resource Partners.

Today, Rand Paul, the GOP nominee to replace outgoing Kentucky Sen. Jim Bunning (R), weighed in on the disaster:

“We had a mining accident that was very tragic,” he told Good Morning America. “But then we come in and it’s always someone’s fault. Maybe sometimes accidents happen.

I recall Molly Ivins talking about a family from Texas that got a message from God to all strip naked, get into a car, and drive to Floydada. Molly mentioned this in the context of her concern about what she referred to as 'Lord impersonators', ie, whoever it is who keep giving people directions while claimin' to be the Lord that you just know the Lord would never have given.

The people impersonatin' the Lord upset Molly, and she wanted the Texas lege to look into making Lord impersonation illegal.

A bullet will make a clock stop ticking, but there is nothing that can make humans stop living for today and ignoring the far-distant future. Or even next month, for that matter.

No matter how much we bleat that "our children are our future", we don't believe it, because it's not true. Our children are and will be their own present when we're gone, and they do not and will not live for us, just as we do not and would not live for our grandparents, not even if they begged us to.

Again, America in 2100, this is what the GOP will help bring you and what we as a society are bringing on ourselves. It's just that the GOP revels in it and thinks its a good thing, because after all, profits are more important.

That is America in 2100.

If your predictions are correct, I think famine USA is more likely to look like this, or like this, or like this, because I don't think that you can compare African famines, exacerbated by warlords who use food donations to control the population, or political famines like the Ukraine, with a natural disaster like the Dust Bowl.

By 2100-2120, there will be diminished resources held onto by local warlords and it will be exactly like the African famines.

[Link: www.agcarbonmarkets.com...]

The United States produces 41% of the world’s corn and 38% of the
world’s soybeans. These crops comprise two of the four largest
sources of caloric energy produced and are thus critical for world
food supply. We pair a panel of county-level yields for these two
crops, plus cotton (a warmer-weather crop), with a new fine-scale
weather dataset that incorporates the whole distribution of temperatures
within each day and across all days in the growing
season. We find that yields increase with temperature up to 29° C
for corn, 30° C for soybeans, and 32° C for cotton but that temperatures
above these thresholds are very harmful. The slope of
the decline above the optimum is significantly steeper than the
incline below it. The same nonlinear and asymmetric relationship
is found when we isolate either time-series or cross-sectional
variations in temperatures and yields. This suggests limited historical
adaptation of seed varieties or management practices to
warmer temperatures because the cross-section includes farmers’
adaptations to warmer climates and the time-series does not.
Holding current growing regions fixed, area-weighted average
yields are predicted to decrease by 30–46% before the end of the
century under the slowest (B1) warming scenario and decrease by
63–82% under the most rapid warming scenario (A1FI) under the
Hadley III model.

speaking of not reading the paper...did you miss this paragraph

There are, of course, many other possible adaptations that this study cannot address. The simplest form of adaptation would be
to change the locations or seasons where and when crops are
grown.† Understanding the scope for this kind of change would
require more careful analysis of potential yield effects on a global
scale. Furthermore, if climate change were anticipated to induce
severe yield impacts on a global scale, then anticipated increases
in commodity prices would likely encourage greater investments
in new seed varieties, irrigation systems, and other technological
changes. Thus, although historical data show the same heat
tolerance in the first and second half of our sample, greater heat
tolerance still may be possible if greater returns for such
innovation arise. Recently, a National Science Foundationfunded
study completed a draft sequence of the corn genome,
which might make it easier to develop new corn varieties with
greater heat tolerance.

re: #215 SanFranciscoZionist

I recall Molly Ivins talking about a family from Texas that got a message from God to all strip naked, get into a car, and drive to Floydada. Molly mentioned this in the context of her concern about what she referred to as 'Lord impersonators', ie, whoever it is who keep giving people directions while claimin' to be the Lord that you just know the Lord would never have given.

The people impersonatin' the Lord upset Molly, and she wanted the Texas lege to look into making Lord impersonation illegal.

I do hope this man gets back on his meds.

I remember it well but I was surprised to find that it was so long (1993):
Naked for Christ Cops Chase Car, Find 20 Nude People

Police in Vinton, La, were surprised when a driver wearing only a towel got
out of a car they stopped, then got back in and sped off. They were dumbfounded
when the car hit a tree and disgorged 20 people wearing nothing at all.

"The Lord told them to get rid of all their belongings and go to Louisiana.
So they got rid of all their clothes and pocketbooks and wallets and
identification and the license plate off their car and came to our gorgeous
state," Vinton Police Chief Dennis Drouillard said.

All 20 were from Floydada, Texas, in the Texas Panhandle, about 550 miles from
the southwest Louisiana town of Vinton. Drouillard said he believed they all
were related.

Driver Sammy Rodriguez and his brother, Danny, both said they were Pentecostal
preachers, Drouillard said.

Floydada Police Chief James Hale said he had been looking for the Rodriguez
family since Tuesday night, when relatives reported them missing. "They made
statements like the devil was after them and Floydada was going to be destroyed
if they stayed here," Hale said.

The family left in 5 or 6 cars, abandoning 1 in Lubbock and a 2d in San
Angelo. Police found a 3d in Galveston, along with the family's clothes,
pocketbooks, wallets and other belongings.

The chase in Vinton began after a campground owner called police. A Calcasieu
Parish deputy stopped their car, and a man wearing only a towel got out.

"When the officer went to ask what was going on, he jumped back in and took
off," Drouillard said. They sped down Vinton's main street until the car hit a
tree at the baseball park at the end of town.

Fifteen adults, as old as age 63, and 5 children, piled out of the 1990
Pontiac Grand Am.

"And they were completely nude. All 20 of them. Didn't have a stitch of
clothes on. I mean, no socks, no underwear, no nothin'. Five of them [the
children] were in the trunk," Drouillard said.

The car was totaled, but the injuries all were minor, Drouillard said.

Rodriguez was booked with reckless driving, flight from an officer, property
damage and several minor traffic violations.

But we're not doing any of that, Ace. We're nowhere near doing any of that. If we were to have that sort of tech prepared, we need to start today.

And there is no market for it, since it is for an event in the future. The only possible source for those funds is collective action.

And again: Changing the places and the seasons stuff is grown requires an enormous expenditure in infrastructure. We're not only not doing that, as the author points out, we don't know where to do it. We need to study it more-- which means that we don't know if it would work.

I approve of your positive attitude, but I think it verges on the Pollyandrish on occasion, most especially with this one.

You're reading Dennet, so you know about Design Space now. You can envision that our current adaptation to the fitness landscape is not just an adaptation to the climate, but also the soil conditions, the sunlight conditions, the weather, the local microorganisms, the local insects, etc. etc. etc-- and they occupy the same Design Space. So when the temperature shifts, everything will shift. The insects, the microorganisms, everything will undergo change.

In order to get harvests of the kind we have now, we'd have to be able to adapt as well to the new conditions as we have to the old ones, or to hope agains hope that somehow the new conditions and the old ones match up perfectly, so that as an acre of good corn-growing land disappears another one becomes fertile. We'll have to pray to hell that the increased temperature hasn't expanded the range of hiterhto-unknown crop diseases and parasites-- we're not going to be able to rip up everything overnight and switch it all around, we have to keep producing food during this, and the harder we're hit the less we can change every year. So we face a danger of being overwhelmed, there-- not being able to shift any crops from their current infrastructure because we desperately need them for food.

When a scientist says that more study would be needed, you cannot point to that as a solution, and you definitely still have to account for the costs of the solution.

I got this in an email today from the Texas Freedom Network...

Even before the Texas State Board of Education took up its expected debate today over what students will learn about separation about church and state in their social studies classrooms, board member Cynthia Dunbar, R-Richmond, made her position clear. She offered the board’s opening prayer this morning and removed any doubt about what she and other far-right board members want students to learn: America’s laws and government should be based on the Christian Bible.

Laying out in blunt language the “Christian nation” vision of American history that the board’s powerful bloc of social conservatives espouses, Dunbar threw down the gauntlet:

“I believe no one can read the history of our country without realizing that the Good Book and the spirit of the savior have from the beginning been our guiding geniuses.”

“Whether we look to the first charter of Virginia, or the charter of New England…the same objective is present — a Christian land governed by Christian principles.”

“I like to believe we are living today in the spirit of the Christian religion. I like also to believe that as long as we do so, no great harm can come to our country.”

You will recall that Dunbar, in her 2008 book, One Nation Under God, argued that the Founders created “an emphatically Christian government” (page 18 of her book) and that government should be guided by a “biblical litmus test” (page 47). Even more damning, this State Board of Education member wrote that public education is a “subtly deceptive tool of perversion,” tyrannical and unconstitutional.

And today she will help decide what the next generation of Texas students will learn about separation of church and state in their public school classrooms.

You can follow the conclusion to this embarrassing saga on our liveblog at TFNInsider.org. And look for an e-mail later today with the final decision of the board -- and what we can do now to restore sanity and respectability to Texas education.

Kagan's treatment of veterans.

"During nine years of service in the Marine Corps, I have received a fair number of thanks from friends and strangers alike. I received perhaps the most thoughtful thanks of all just before graduating from Harvard Law School: The supposedly "anti-military" Elena Kagan sent me a handwritten note thanking me for my military service and wishing me luck in my new life as a judge advocate.

If Elena Kagan is "anti-military," she certainly didn't show it. She treated the veterans at Harvard like VIPs, and she was a fervent advocate of our veterans association. She was decidedly against "don't ask, don't tell," but that never affected her treatment of those who had served. I am confident she is looking forward to the upcoming confirmation hearings as an opportunity to engage in some intellectual sparring with members of Congress over her Supreme Court nomination. BP gulf oil spill update:

The top kill attempt on the MC252 could occur as early as Tuesday, not Sunday as we we had hoped.

The plan is to pump mud into the well via choke and kill lines. If it works, cement will be pumped in to seal the well and end the leak.

This has never been attempted at such depth.

Current weather is ideal, and 50-60% of the oil that hits the surface is being recovered by skimmers, burning is working well as well and the dispersants are resulting in not much oil reaching the surface. (From the Admirals press briefing)

This is wonderful, but these numbers will decline dramatically if the favourable weather changes. Also, it is really a complete unknown what effect the massive plumes of sub-sea oil caused by the dispersants will have on the ecology. First measurements are very favourable, with dissolved oxygen levels within range. But this could change as new data is collected.

As British Petroleum scrambles to affix a four-story, 70-ton dome over the massive oil geyser venting toxic sludge into the Gulf of Mexico, people everywhere are wondering what else can be done to stem the deadly tide.

Komsomoloskaya Pravda, Russia's best-selling daily publication, has an idea: Why not just nuke it?

During the Soviet years, Russia's communists had to deal with numerous oil disasters and on five different occasions they employed controlled, underground nuclear blasts to quickly solve the problem.

[The] underground explosion moves the rock, presses on it, and, in essence, squeezes the well’s channel," Pracda reported.

"It’s so simple, in fact, that the Soviet Union, a major oil exporter, used this method five times to deal with petrocalamities," added Moscow reporter Julia Ioffe, writing for True/Slant. "The first happened in Uzbekistan, on September 30, 1966 with a blast 1.5 times the strength of the Hiroshima bomb and at a depth of 1.5 kilometers. KP also notes that subterranean nuclear blasts were used as much as 169 times in the Soviet Union to accomplish fairly mundane tasks like creating underground storage spaces for gas or building canals."

All one has to do is read one of the warming denier posts at the stalker blog to see what an empty hat he is, Reisinger never has any real science to back up his lunacy.

Well that is because he never was a scientist. When he was here, he made a false claim about entropy once. He got something wrong that a first year physics or chemistry student would know like their own name. When I challenged him on it, surprise, surprise he could not even define entropy or the canonical ensemble. In fact he mocked the phrase cannonical ensemble.

Now, I don't expect non-scientists like LArry to know Stat Mech. But I do expect people who claim to be scientists or have valid opinions about the science to know the basics. He is rather like one who claims to be a rabbi while insisting on his non-existent authority that pork is kosher.

He also didn't know basic calculus questions when challenged. Again, it's ok to not know calculus, it doesn't make you a bad person, but it does disqualify you from opining about a calculation in a scientific paper.

No, what he is, is a failed engineer. He used to work as one. No doubt his stupidity got him fired - after all his bio does not claim he does engineering for anyone anymore, and he doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground scientifically.

He's a loser and an idiot to boot.

421 researchok  Fri, May 21, 2010 4:26:35pm

From Another side of global agriculture:

Poverty -- caused by the low income productivity of farmers' labor -- is the primary source of hunger in Africa, and the problem is only getting worse. The number of "food insecure" people in Africa (those consuming less than 2,100 calories a day) will increase 30 percent over the next decade without significant reforms, to 645 million, the U.S. Agriculture Department projects.

What's so tragic about this is that we know from experience how to fix the problem. Wherever the rural poor have gained access to improved roads, modern seeds, less expensive fertilizer, electrical power, and better schools and clinics, their productivity and their income have increased. But recent efforts to deliver such essentials have been undercut by deeply misguided (if sometimes well-meaning) advocacy against agricultural modernization and foreign aid.

In Europe and the United States, a new line of thinking has emerged in elite circles that opposes bringing improved seeds and fertilizers to traditional farmers and opposes linking those farmers more closely to international markets. Influential food writers, advocates, and celebrity restaurant owners are repeating the mantra that "sustainable food" in the future must be organic, local, and slow. But guess what: Rural Africa already has such a system, and it doesn't work. Few smallholder farmers in Africa use any synthetic chemicals, so their food is de facto organic. High transportation costs force them to purchase and sell almost all of their food locally. And food preparation is painfully slow. The result is nothing to celebrate: average income levels of only $1 a day and a one-in-three chance of being malnourished.

Lots more here
.

Weigel keeps digging: Defending Rand Paul, Part II

[...]

This is complicated stuff, but the Pauls are used to it. I first grappled with it in a 2008 story about racist passages in Ron Paul's newsletters, written between his departure from Congress and his 1996 return to it -- a story Joe Conason kindly links to in order to make a point about the Paul family's embrace of Pat Buchanan-style populism. (A number of people whine whenever I mention this story, and they should probably grow up already.)

But there's no comparison between the 2008 newsletter story and this story. That was about explicitly racist populism. This is about the libertarian dream of a colorblind society, faithful to the Constitution, with as little regulation of business as possible. I'm sticking up for Rand Paul here for a couple of reasons.

-- He believes this because he despises racism and believes almost all Americans agree with him.

-- This debate is more interesting and honest than the usual slippery debate we have about race, law, and regulation.

[...]

If you want to know the libertarian position from a sympathetic POV, Weigel has it. If you want my opinion, Rand P. is a pathetic POS.

The next question is: What does that do to conservatism? My hope would be that some-otherwise wingnuts find the courage to collectively do a William F. Buckley and read Ron & Rand Paul out of the conservative movement. Not sure how likely that is, but it would be helpful.

As for Rand's 'exhaustion', that's what celebrities use to hide the fact that they took drugs and had a bad trip. Find a better excuse, you far-right loon.

Rand Paul might make that easier given the high-profile exposé of his idiocy.

But all I'm hearing from party leaders so far is blah blah blah.

Anyone ever see this? It kind of dovetails with the Rand Paul, Libertarian, free market bull shit artists. It's from 2007:

Robert Bork Files Slip-and-Fall Lawsuit Against Yale Club

Robert Bork , the one-time U.S. Supreme Court nominee, has sued the Yale Club for negligence. He is seeking $1 million in damages for injuries he sustained from a fall at the club last year. Here’s a copy of the complaint

Bork was at the Yale Club last June to speak at an event sponsored by The New Criterion, a monthly review of the arts and intellectual life. According to the suit filed in federal court in Manhattan, the club failed to provide steps and a handrail to climb onto the dais. Bork fell backward as he was attempting to climb the dais, striking his leg on the stage and his head on a heat register, the suit says.

The 80-year-old Bork suffered a large hematoma, or swelling of blood, in his lower left leg as a result of the fall and the hematoma eventually burst, according to the lawsuit. The injury required surgery and months of physical therapy, according to the complaint. He claims to have suffered “excruciating pain” as a result of the injury and continues to walk with a limp, according to the complaint.

Seems like he was pretty banged up. However, you have to wonder how he would have ruled as a younger man. Or given that lawsuits such as this are typically frowned upon by the right wing. Well, of course they're frowned upon unless it's them that's been injured.

As to the nuclear option. It too has never been attempted at such depth, has a 20% failure rate, and has been mostly used to put out large gas leaks. BP found oil.

We would need to acquire the specialised nukes from the Russians, and drill holes where they would be detonated. I don't know what diameter hole needs to be drilled or how long this would take to implement.

The depths would prevent large amounts of fall-out. It wouldn't even be a big nuke.

Specifically, the depth at which the small nuke would be detonated would be deep into the rock below the ocean floor. This would contain the radiation. But if such an attempt failed, it would no longer be possible to do any sort of Top Kill on the well.

What if it fractured the well at depth and removed the relief well option? Then the leak wouldn't end until the reservoir was depressurised. (I am just guessing here that this is a possibility.)

Indeed. The resevoir is something like two miles below the sea bed, but I simply don't know the deformation mechanics of sedimentary rock at that depth. re: #469 tradewind

I've been wondering about that, too. I know that microbes are actually on the market for munching garage floor oil and the like. All I could find from a quick search are these:

An Alaskan feast for oil-eating microbes.

Although treated beaches whitened more quickly than untreated ones, suggesting that microbial cleaning occurred faster there, researchers were unable to determine exactly how much oil had disappeared. Complicating the problem was the fact that all beaches experienced changes in oil composition, including natural weathering (loss of volatile constituents) and some microbial breakdown. Differences in the initial amount of oil present and the type of beach also made the standard technique of comparing weights of treated and untreated beach material all but useless here. Finally, researchers could not tell how well the bacteria had degraded the more complex and potentially toxic compounds within crude oil, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)

Gulf Oil Spill is Testing Ground for Future Cleanup Tech

But other long-touted measures, such as oil-eating microbes, however, are not yet ready to fight large spills.

Actually, the reservoir is about 3 miles below the sea bed. The relief wells will try to intersect the MC252 at about 18,000 feet below the sea bed. The casing is 9 5/8" at that point, just above the resevoir, as opposed to 36" at the sea bed.

Farming will tend to move north and away from the prairies as the temp increases. That will work for a few decades, but as the centre of food production in North America moves to the northern Canadian prairies the arable land will give way to Shield where growing grasses like wheat will deplete the soil rather quickly.

If farming technology keeps in step with food production drift, adding fertilizer to the soil will boost production on bad soils and dry farming techniques will help retain moisture.

Unfortunately, high tech farming has a limited life span if water becomes scarce, as it will when continental glaciers disappear. Even if the technology for collecting water from the air and irrigation improves considerably over the next 75 years, there is a limited supply of land and water. It would be very difficult to support 400,000,000 million people with predicted water scarcity and the growth of droughts.

I think you may be over blowing the rhetoric with your pictures, but I certainly understand your frustration and sense of urgency. Our ability to adapt, through technology, land use improvements, and expanded protein sources will have an significant impact on how well that size of population survives. On top of reducing CO2, we better start putting money into adaptive technologies now.

North America, especially northern US and Canada will do considerably better than most other countries and that understanding may be why some refuse to believe increased CO2 is a bad thing for humans.

Luap Dnar is afraid that he (and, by extension, Papa Luap Nor) will be exposed by MTP for what they really are...and they're scared shitless.

/good news whether Luap Dnar was on MTP or not, but I'd love to have seen him get verbally and intellectually disemboweled...

I'm afraid David Gregory does not have the fire power to do that.

Aw, thanks. A cold beer after a long day slickered head to foot on a death stinking, humid, hot beach scrubbing pelicans and chasing oil slippery and really FAST terns would be even better. ;)

Other than that, good post.

Agreed. We may not be able to stop AGW entirely, but we might be able to reduce its severity enough to make it survivable.

Ace, read the paper and don't be an idiot. The reason you failed is because you apparently can not do math and have no understanding of wich areas will be affected.

Lets look to this to help you out of that pickle shall we.

[Link: www.gfdl.noaa.gov...]

Read the graph and tell me where all that new food will come from. It is true that for a while Canada will florish. But as we approach a six degree world - which we are certainly marching towards, Canada suffers too.

Don't you dare take the tone that you know shit about this or have looked at the facts.

LVQ, it may be time to step back and start teaching rather than condemning the people here. The vast majority of us are on your side and are more than willing to spread the information we get from you and other sources, but calling those most likely to support the necessary steps and to broadcast that information, idiots, will not help.

Calling an idiot an idiot is frequently called for, even here, but people like Ace, who has shown the ability to have his mind changed, are the ones we need to teach.

Rand Paul's assertion that businesses should be able to violate a persons' rights certainly could have had some interesting outcomes:

"What happened to your brother-in-law?"

He was suspected of shoplifting in Macy's Dept Store, so the security guard and the cashier had a trial and shot him.

"Bummer. Pep Boys only takes a finger."

Under Ayn Randian Capitalistic Theology, the customer masses would end these atrocities by not frequenting businesses that utilize such security measures.
A harsh punishment indeed.

When someone is so far right that I am outraged, you know you are looking at some serious nuttery.

Apparently, only two other guests have ever bailed out of MTP at the last minute: Louis Farrakhan and Saudi Prince Bandar.

Not exactly good company for ol' Rand to keep in this situation...the sly, the slick, and the wicked.

There is another option- expand the number of countries that are net exporters of food.

In the 60's and 70's great agricultural strides were made in Africa. That ground to a halt as geo-political influences rejected that kind of aid. The end result was that nations on their way to self sufficiency became even bigger importers of food aid (population growth).

Teach a man to fish and all that.

Rand's reason: he's "exhausted."

Luap Dnar is not a very convincing liar..."exhausted" must be code to the Paulian faithful that Luap Dnar is afraid of getting his ass whupped on MTP.

"Exhaustion" is a code for "the public figure doesn't want to explain what's really going on".

UTTER "B.S."

RAND got caught out on Stu-Pid-Did answers regarding the 1964 Civil Rights Act. I understand that HE has issues with the Public Accommodations Parts,as DID Sen. Barry Goldwater and William F. Buckley - "BACK IN THE DAY."
Sen. Goldwater and WFB "repented" from that position at the later edge of their lives. BOTH should be enough of an Example to Rand Paul. IF They are Not, I propose "The Prayer for the Czar"
"May G-d Bless and Keep Him - FAR AWAY FROM US!!
