New: Featured LGF User Pages

Technology • Views: 2,490

The new LGF feature of the day is visible in the right sidebar: “Featured Pages!”

These are LGF Pages posted by registered users, selected to appear on the front page by our crack staff. How do you get your page to show up in “Featured Pages?” Well, the best way is to post something interesting and/or unique.

The bookmarklet posting tool for LGF Pages has all the tools you need to make your page into your personal blog. Stinky Beaumont, the monitor lizards and I will be looking for pages that are more than just a link and a quote from the article; write something thoughtful about your post that expresses your opinion, and you’re more likely to catch an editor’s attention. Informative links on breaking news stories are also a good way to be featured.

“Featured Pages” will show the last 10 pages selected by the editors, within the past 24 hours so they’ll rotate off in a day or so.

In other news, the interview I went to today resulted in a job offer. I've accepted it, and I start on Wednesday. It's full time, but I'll need to supplement it a bit or else find something better. Still, it pays a good bit more than unemployment and the hourly is very good. No commission to start, though.

According to a press release, self-described “Tea Party Founder” Dale Robertson has joined the Washington Times’ “Tea Party Report” blog. Robertson, you may recall, was thrust back into the limelight in March, when he was quoted by the paper as never having seen any racial slurs at Tea Parties, despite having been photographed holding a sign that featured the N-word. He told us the photo was a fake, which our expert then disputed, before a sea of journalists came forward to point out that Robertson had already admitted to holding the sign. Update: The Times has pulled the column, but Robertson has also popped up on The Hill.

To see the tags given a post, I believe you need to be looking at the pages via the LGF Pages button on the right sidebar. Look at JeffinOhio's tags for the Gingrich book story. lol.

So will my income. It's about 36 hours a week so I'll still be able to look for something that pays what I really need. The downside is that its 6 days a week, so I won't be here much during the evenings and likely not at all during the afternoon. But it'll be worth it.

Texas board adopts new social studies curriculum

AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas State Board of Education adopted a social studies and history curriculum Friday that amends or waters down the teaching of the civil rights movement, slavery, America's relationship with the U.N. and hundreds of other items.

The ideological debate over the guidelines, which drew intense scrutiny beyond Texas, will be used to teach some 4.8 million Texas students for the next 10 years.

The standards also will be used by textbook publishers who often develop materials for other states based on those approved in Texas, although teachers in the Lone Star state have latitude in deciding which material to teach.

The board took separate votes on standards for high schools and kindergarten through eighth grades. The final vote was 9-5 on each set of standards.

Kevin, fuck you. If Sean Penn were not down in Haiti holed up in a self-financed village of relief shacks, doing actual relief work and SHUNNING The Media, he would be down on the Gulf in a little row boat with a couple of lengths of absorb-a-boom, wringing a little oil at a time into a bucket. In other news, the interview I went to today resulted in a job offer. I've accepted it, and I start on Wednesday. It's full time, but I'll need to supplement it a bit or else find something better. Still, it pays a good bit more than unemployment and the hourly is very good. No commission to start, though.

Well, I think there are a lot more of them in hiding when it gets cold. If I dig around I can find the little ones hiding in the plants and under rocks but I don't want to disturb them too much. When the weather warms up next week I should have a better idea how many survivors I have.

I've been damn proud of us since well before that. Right after 9/11 there were endless predictions of mob violence against Muslims and Arabs in the U.S. We had a few bad incidents, but as a nation sailed through with amazing calm and focus. A Phoenix news station (KPHO) is reporting that the state Senator behind Arizona’s new immigration law, Russell Pierce (R), does not intend on stopping at SB-1070. In e-mails obtained by the local CBS affiliate, Pearce said he intends to push for an “anchor baby” bill that would essentially overturn the 14th amendment by no longer granting citizenship to the children of undocumented immigrants born on U.S. soil. “Anchor babies” is a derogatory and “politically charged” term used to refer to the U.S. citizen children of undocumented parents.

From what I understand, there are wealthier countries in which the mother will fly in and overstay her visa to give birth, then go home.

The parents just want their child to have a US passport in case their own country goes nuts. As a mother, I can't really blame them. If I lived next to Kim Il Jong, I'd want a back door for my kids, too.

I think that, as lizard pages spur conversations, membership will grow. People like following a specific thread, and as the main page threads tend to disintegrate into multiple topics after 100 posts or so, this will be a good thing.

Here's the thing.... when I cite links for someone whose POV I know to be to the left of mine, I usually try extra hard not to pick from those that are associated with ultraconservative/right wing blogs, because it's an automatic suspension of disbelief. Same in reverse, when someone posts a link from a left-wing blog as ' proof ', it tends to get not as much trust. So you thread your way through the links, skip the far-one-way-or-another if possible, and look for ones from mainstream sites to use as cites.

In other news, the interview I went to today resulted in a job offer. I've accepted it, and I start on Wednesday. It's full time, but I'll need to supplement it a bit or else find something better. Still, it pays a good bit more than unemployment and the hourly is very good. No commission to start, though.

if you over cook the shrimp till they are rubbery, throw em in a seasoned but un-oiled pan. blackened shrimp :)

hahahaha oh WE KNOW BELIEVE ME :D :D

Lagunitas beers are around Portland bars and groceries so much that I swear they're like honorary Portlanders. The Lag IPA is right up there with Bridgeport's IPA for being an awesome drinkin' IPA (as opposed to the aggressive imperials I drink slow)

My favorite california brewery is North Coast, though. They're just so very very good o_o

Indeed. An in-law made German Potato Salad in addition to sausages, every Thanksgiving when I was a kid. Lessee, Grandmother Mueller is the mother of Tom, who's wife Anna Lee is my mother's younger sister by one year. Anyway, in addition to "the bird" we were also served a full array of potato salad and delicious sausages. I love food.

Mmm, recipe?

I use Alton Brown's method for the mayo. I use all olive oil (Alton just uses a little for flavoring), mustard powder, and assorted copped herbs (dill, taragon, sage, etc). I dice and steam the potatoes (you could boil them if you really want to). Once fork tender, allow them to cool. Once cooled add them to a large bowl, ad celery and mix in mayo using your hands (a fork or spatula breaks up the potatoes too much. It's really easy.

I never understood that logic even as a non-believer. If there was a God and God made man than everything that man creates is an extension of God. So in this case, God would have wanted man to engage in abiogenesis.

Yeah, I had to do a double take on that.

Venter et. al. have created a new organism, a new species or genus or whatever (depending on how the systematists decide to treat these things).

I guess we could argue whether venter really created life, or modified it (in which case we now have three types of selection: natural, artificial by breeding, artificial by directly engineered DNA).

Still, this latest development certainly should be a shot across the bow of the creationists (of any stripe.)

What I didn't mention is that they kept on calling me (at least 20 times in 5 weeks) offering me more census jobs, until I finally told them to stop after I received my full-time job offer last week. But because kids are told they'll burn in eternal hell if they don't accept Jesus, they fake it. Even to themselves.

People who truly are strong in their faith are not actually faithful at all. They know God is there because they sense it. There's really no phenomenon in the universe that makes you second-guess your religion when you experience it in this way.

Concur, this is pushed and pushed hard in certain circles (e.g., pentacostal.)

It has much to do with the idea of immediate reward, I think. It's kind of a marketing ploy, like state lotteries which have just enough $5 instant-scratch winners to whet the appetite of the gamblers. Of course the gamblers are still delusion, but they think they now are onto something.

Manipulating people by manipulating their emotions is now pretty standard in our society, a creation of the hyper-successful advertising agencies.

Downstairs I embedded a video of a health & wealth preacher, telling his audience that God wants them rich and healthy, etc.

You'll never go wrong in marketing by telling people what they want to hear.

$XX.xx and hour plus 50 cents a mile. Day starts when she leaves our garage, ends when she gets back. They don't want her to work more than 8 hours a day. They sent her to an area 90 MINUTES from our house. 3 hours of travel per day (paid for plus mileage) leaving only 5 hours to 'work"

my son was a total sports junkie....he thrived on competition, so bad grades= no sports....straight A student who went on to win the Athlete/Scholar Award from the US Army as a high school senior....it's all about priorities and parents help set them...and I'm happy for the Kid

NEW DELHI - An Air India plane with 169 aboard overshot a runway while landing in southern India Saturday. Witnesses say a few on board survived.

The aircraft was landing in the southern Indian city of Mangalore, arriving from Dubai.

"There were 163 passengers and six crew members and we fear all of them have been killed," said Rohit Katiyar, a top airport security official. However, other officials reported that there were survivors but that they didn't know how many.

It's Friday night - time for another story.

This one doesn't involve the emergency room, radiology department, or indeed anything medical. I am reminded of this story because I just told it yesterday in conversation, and I'm sure others will have similar stories in this vein. This is the story of the best practical joke I ever saw - elegant, simple, and just lowbrow enough.

I was in the final year of high school, and school camp that year was where we were put into small groups and given canoes, dropped off at one point far along the Murray River (sixth longer river in the world, I think), and given a spot downstream to meet one week later. The nights were mostly filled with the sort of juvenile stupidity teenage boys will get up to, but one guy played a prank one night that I've never seen topped.

We were seated around the campfire, and one of us got up, picked up a shovel, and went off into the bush to do his business. As soon as he was out of sight, this guy got up, picked up another shovel, motioned to us to be quiet, and snuck off after him.

Apparently, the victim found a largish bush, dug his hole, and squatted, as you would. Somehow, this guy managed to sneak up to the bush unseen, and slide his own shovel under the victim without him noticing. One massive dump later, he simply... took the shovel away. And without a word, dumped the stuff, and crept back to camp.

I only wish we had video phones back then to somehow get a video of the guy's face as he turned around and then looked about in shock, trying to find his own poop.

When the far left is crazy in America, it's crazy in different directions. It's disorganized. Chaos. Circular firing squads. There's little tribalism because the extreme left in america are extreme left in very different ways.

The extreme right? They're a threat. They're organized, they're unified, they're angry, they're paranoid, and most importantly, they're politically viable. And a real threat.

A secretary to a Department head wrote a letter on his behalf to a recently elected official, in which she congratulates the newly elected official for his "recent erection".

They're not politically viable. It's like beating up a kid. Way to go, big round of applause, you totally dismantled those old ladies in stupid costumes.

The extreme right? They're a threat. They're organized, they're unified, they're angry, they're paranoid, and most importantly, they're politically viable. And a real threat.

Ok... so I get Sunday evening off at 7:00pm, the finale of LOST starts at 8pm. Considering I am low man at work among about 20 checkers, this was a gift from my manager. Normally I work 4-5 hours in the evening on Sunday, but this Sunday, they managed to schedule me from 11:45 to 7:00pm... near next to impossible for someone as "green" as I am to get any requested time off.

For the 1 or 2 LOST fans out there... just a reminder about the schedule of LOST events on TV this weekend. Sat. even they are playing the Pilot 1 and Pilot 2 episodes, the fist two hours of the show from 6 years ago.

Then on Sunday evening, there will be a 2 hour recap of the complete series... if you want to catch up on 6 years of episodes, that's the time to do it... and then... the 2 1/2 hour series finale... after your local news there will be an hour of Jimmy Krimmel Live show with members of the LOST cast.

So... a total of 7 1/2 hours of LOST coverage this weekend. The TV event of a lifetime.
